RK International Machine Tools has added the Perfect range of surface
grinders to its portfolio. Table sizes range from 150 x 450 mm, to 1600 x 6000 mm, available as saddle, column, cantilever, double column type and CNC configurations. The initial focus of RK will be on the X-series of grinders, which is headed by the flagship Perfect X25 PLC controlled surface grinder.
With a 250 x 500 mm table and 500 mm clearance between spindle centreline and table top, the Perfect X25 will appeal to many subcontractors and toolroom customers. It has been designed with the operator in mind and features a touch screen interface that simplifies machine operation. RK unveils surface grinder range

Asia’s largest exhibition for used machinery. The eighth edition of this highly popular event will take place at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India on 4-6 September 2014, with the organiser promising it to be the perfect platform for business transactions and networking. Port-based plate valve specialist, Cook Compression, has seen a number of benefits following the installation of Wogaard Coolant Saver units on its CNC machine tools. Unusually, the unit proved its worth on a bandsaw before being installed across the shop floor.
“The saw was consuming a significant amount of coolant due to the small chips dragging it out on the swarf conveyor,” says plant manager David Wain. “We had seen the Wogaard Coolant Saver when business manager Jason Hutt came to explain the benefits of it to us. He allowed us to have one on trial, although there was no previous case of the unit being used on a CNC saw. The only question mark was the size of the

Nederman acquisition
Sweden-headquartered Nederman has acquired
the design and technology for the production of downdraught benches from Air Cleaning Systems Ltd (ACS), the Wales-based manufacturer which went into administration in June. Nederman has in fact been providing downdraught benches manufactured by ACS for some years. Navy patrol ships deal worth £348m
Details of a deal which will see three
new Royal Navy offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) built on the Clyde have been confirmed by the Ministry of Defence. Plans for the vessels to be built at BAE Systems' Govan and Scotstoun yards were announced last year. The MoD has now said the deal is worth £348m and will help safeguard more than 800 jobs. The new patrol vessels will be used to support counter-terrorism, counter-piracy and anti-smuggling operations in UK waters, with the first OPV expected in 2017.

Turned parts subcontractor, Precision
Products (Brighton) Ltd, is reporting a significant upturn in business in the first half of 2014, its 40th year of trading, which has given the company the confidence to increase investment in its plant and workforce. In January this year, a Miyano ABX 64 TH3 10-axis CNC turn-mill centre was installed at the firm’s main factory in Rustington. In addition, three extra setters have been employed, bringing the headcount to 39.

CNC with OPC UA interface
It is now possible to record the latest
machine and process data from a plant using Siemens’ Sinumerik OPC UA option. OPC UA is a platform independent, service-oriented architecture that integrates the functionality of individual OPC Classic specifications into one extensible framework. In short, the option allows the integration of Sinumerik 828D/828D Basic and Sinumerik 840D sl CNC systems into the corporate network via the OPC UA software interface. Achieving minimum downtime is key in any plant, and if machines are being monitored for factors such as heat, vibration and power consumption, then a breakdown can be predicted and ultimately, prevented. Traditionally, when monitoring production in this way, plants were required to add PCs with sensors to existing machines, meaning all of the data captured was second hand. The OPC UA option on the Sinumerik system eliminates the need for additional PC sensors as the facilities are already integrated.For further information www.siemens.com

Delcam’s Vortex speeds Bloodhound
Delcam’s PowerMill CAM software is being used by
the University of Sheffield’s AMRC (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre) to produce a series of components for the Bloodhound SuperSonic Car project. Bloodhound SSC aims to set a new world land speed record of 1000 mph in South Africa in 2016.
One particularly challenging part machined at the AMRC was for the front suspension sub-assembly. On first looking at the model, it appeared that the part would be extremely difficult and complex to machine because it included deep pockets with small internal corners. However, these problems were overcome easily by using the Vortex area-clearance strategy in PowerMill to rough out the pockets. As a
result, the AMRC was able to produce the finished part within tight time constraints.
“We like Delcam’s ability to give us rapid programming, thus reducing the time it takes to deliver the cutter paths we require,” says Matt Farnsworth,

The University of Nottingham’s Faculty
of Engineering has updated its machining workshop with the installation of 12 Colchester Student two-axis lathes fitted with Acu-Rite two/three-axis VUE DROs. This substantial investment – the latest evidence of the close co-operation between machine supplier 600 UK and Heidenhain GB – has replaced a batch of ageing training lathes.
“Our collection of existing centre lathes had seen better days, so we went out to tender to three potential suppliers,” says Kevin Padgett, the faculty’s senior technical manager. “All came back with machines of similar ability. However, the main selection criteria were quality, service, warranty and price, and 600 UK won the deal with its solution based on Colchester Student

Exquisite bikes made better
The award-winning custom bike
manufacturer, Thunderbike, now produces a large number of its individually machined parts using HyperMill CAM from Open Mind Technologies. Deploying the five-axis machining strategies from HyperMill, the number of operations in many instances has been halved at the company‘s facility in Hamminkeln, Germany, while machining times have reduced significantly. This is particularly the case for complex components such as fully milled wheels. A wheel here resembles a turbine blade with its many internal free-form surfaces. In this instance, the HyperMill stock roughing and rest material roughing strategies are used to improve cycle times and tool life. Programming is crucial for the quality of machined parts. It is here that the post-processor from Open Mind and the graphical simulation of machining processes is supporting the production process. Furthermore, turn-mill jobs based on five-axis technology require reliable collision checks in order for the operator to be sure that the planned processes are actually possible. Radbend software goes with the grain
Crop processing machine manufacturer,
Alvan Blanch, has eradicated a production bottleneck by driving four press brakes with Radbend software from Radan. Before the investment, the operators needed time when working on new components to look at engineering drawings, deciding on tooling and calculating bend sequences.
“We put mini PCs on the press brake controllers, and with Radbend Viewer linked to the server the operators can interrogate the 3D model, rotate the part and query anything at the machine,” says Graham Robbins, CADCAM engineer at Alvan Blanch. “They also see a full animation of how the part should be fed in, along with its orientation and a step-by-step
breakdown of each fold.” With Radbend calculating
everything automatically, engineering drawings are only used as back-up now, rather than being
a necessity. All the information is readily available in 3D by pulling up the program on the mini PCs. For further information www.radan.com
Purdue University’s College of Engineering in
the USA has chosen to equip one of its key educational laboratories with NUM's open-architecture CNC systems and 3D simulation software. The equipment will provide students with hands-on CNC programming experience and help to familiarise them with advanced machine tool operation and control techniques using a combination of virtual machines and high performance CNC demonstrator systems. The facility is currently equipped with several two-axis CNC demonstrator machines based on NUM 760 and 10xx series CNC systems, together with a NUM 2D simulator.
“When we set up the mechanical engineering lab, most of the systems were like black boxes, so their operation was difficult to understand, which was far from ideal when we wanted to teach the basics of CNC,” says Professor Yung Shin. “We therefore decided to base our
