EDlEttERI’ve never been mistaken for an engineer. I just don’t have the aptitude for it.

I’m often reminded of this when attempting advanced household im-provement and maintenance tasks. Oh, I can muddle through the simple ones, but as the complexity increases, so does my panic level.

Nevertheless, I always try. For the sake of demonstration, let’s say I’m in-stalling a ceiling fan. In short order, I become fully aware that I’m in over my head. I need help, and set out to recruit someone to fix my little science fair project. Depending on scheduling and my desperation level, I accept assis-tance wherever I can find it. Typically, one of the following scenarios occurs:

Scenario A: A good friend shows up an hour late to find me in the fetal position on the floor—sweating profusely and surrounded by tools and fan blades. His idea of “helping” is squinting at the instructions sheet, flipping it repeatedly, and scratching his head. The most support he can offer—despite claiming on the phone to be an “expert”—is to turn to me and ask “Where’s English?”

Scenario B: A casual acquaintance is recommended by a mutual friend, and offers to stop by on his way home from work to have a look at my prob-lem. As it turns out, this cat is a cross between Bob Vila and Al Borland. Within a half-hour, there’s so much air circulating in my living room I’m con-sidering contacting a consultant for a wind site feasibility study. I’m blown away by his skill set, and he immediately becomes my “ceiling fan guy.”

I’d wager we all know someone who has a “guy” for everything. You know the type: “This paint job is terrible! You shoulda’ called my guy,” or “I’m burnin’ up in here! Lemme get my A/C guy on the horn!”

I used to think that people like that were obnoxious, but I’ve since come to realize that they’re just inept in a few areas. They’re just like me, only they’ve found the solution...

They have “guys.” Choosing the right person for the job is critical. Your best buddy may talk

a big game and be more than willing to help, only to be utterly useless. It’s far more beneficial to find someone who knows their stuff, and can deliver on what they say.

Finding those kind of people requires an active search. Therein lies the beauty of this issue of Wind Systems—our 2014 Buyer’s

Guide. We’ve already done all of the leg work for you. The pages that follow are filled with “guys” who are experts within their

respective industry segments. We’ve worked hard to make sure the listed companies are either directly

involved in the wind energy industry, or provide products and services to such companies.

It’s my hope that you’ll keep this Buyer’s Guide close-at-hand through-out 2014, as you go looking for your “guys.” Keep it at your desk or in your truck. Use it as an industry phone book. Mark it up. Dog-ear the corners. Call around. Make some new contacts.

If we run into each other at Windpower 2014 in Las Vegas this Spring, maybe I’ll see this issue sticking out of your back pocket—torn, tattered, and duct-taped.

When I see that, I’ll be able to breathe a sigh of satisfaction, and say to myself: “Now THERE’S a guy who is committed to wind energy. THERE’S a guy who’s got ‘guys.’”

Thanks for reading!

SIEMENS INaUGURatES U.S. WIND SERVICE tRaINING CENtERJoined by state and local government officials, custom-ers and special guests, Siemens Energy recently formally inaugurated its state-of-the-art wind service training cen-ter in Orlando. The center that provides highly advanced technical and safety training for installation and service technicians working at wind energy projects located throughout the Americas region.

The new $7 million facility is a milestone for Sie-mens as the company’s wind service business continues to grow, and the need for skilled technicians increases. Siemens currently provides service and maintenance for more than 3,000 installed turbines in the Americas

region and 6,800 globally, with a combined generating capacity of 15GW. As more projects come online in the U.S. and across the region, highly skilled technicians will be needed to provide the long-term service and main-tenance required to help insure the turbines operate at peak production, availability and reliability levels.

The training center provides trainees with the indus-try’s highest level of safety training and equips them with the advanced technical skills needed to service and main-tain wind turbines. Siemens will also train the techni-cians who work on the installation of wind turbines in the Americas, with training specifically designed to address the installation process and related safety requirements. GE SOftWaRE UpGRaDE tO BOOSt tURBINE OUtpUt BY Up tO 5 pERCENtGE recently announced PowerUp, a customized soft-ware-enabled platform that will increase a wind farm’s output by up to 5 percent taking into account environ-mental conditions. For the average U.S. wind farm op-erator using GE’s 1.5-77 turbine, a five percent increase in energy output translates to up to a 20 percent increase in profit per turbine. PowerUp is available for turbine models across GE’s installed base.

“To put things in perspective, today our customers have more than 9,000 GE 1.5-77 turbines running in the United States,” Anne McEntee, president and CEO of GE’s renewable energy business, said at the announce-ment. “Even a 1 percent energy output increase on this installed base would generate more than 420,000 mega-watt hours of additional energy each year, which would provide the equivalent power used by 33,000 average U.S. homes.”

When PowerUp is activated, a GE software program performs a complete before-and-after wind farm power performance analysis, validating the performance im-provement. By adjusting performance dials that include speed, torque, pitch, aerodynamics and turbine controls, PowerUp seeks to maximize the power output of a wind farm.

The Baffin wind project is still under develop-ment, and the decision to proceed is contingent upon local government approval. Iberdrola is well positioned to utilize the 202MW of turbines at other possible U.S. sites.

The wind farm project is the last phase of Iber-drola’s Peñascal complex which, once commis-sioned, will have capacity of 606MW, generating enough power to supply 210,000 households and prevent the emission of 850,000 tons of greenhouse gases every year.

pOWER SERVICE COMpaNY Of OklaHOMa tO pURCHaSE NEaRlY 600MW Of WIND PSO has signed agreements for the long-term pur-chase of nearly 600MW of wind energy from facili-ties currently under development in northwestern Oklahoma and the Oklahoma panhandle.

Long-term Renewable Energy Purchase Agreements (REPAs) totaling 598.7 megawatts will provide PSO customers with energy from wind farms near Seiling, Balko, and Goodwell beginning in 2016. The agreements are for 20 years and are subject to approval by the Okla-homa Corporation Commission.

The new REPAs are a result of a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued June 10, 2013, in which PSO sought long-term purchases of up to 200MW of new wind energy resources.

The decision to contract for an additional 400MW was based on pricing opportunities that are expected to lower costs for PSO’s customers by an estimated $53 million in the first year of the contracts. Annual savings are expected to grow each year over the lives of the contracts.

The new series of 20-year agreements in-cludes: 199.8MW from Balko Wind, LLC, owned by Apex Clean Energy Holdings, LLC; 198.9MW from Seiling Wind, LLC, owned by NextEra Energy Resources, LLC; and 200MW from the Goodwell Wind Project, LLC, owned by TradeWind Energy.

EVERpOWER SElECtED aS fINalISt tO pROVIDE DOD WItH RENEWaBlE ENERGYEverPower Wind Holdings, Inc. has been selected to compete for contracts to provide renewable en-

ergy to U.S. Army and potentially other Department of Defense facilities. The company has been deemed qualified to develop, finance, design, build and own wind energy plants that will power facilities with a clean, renewable source of domestic power. Ever-Power Wind Holdings partnered with GE’s wind tur-bine business and the Tennessee Valley Infrastructure Group (TVIG) to provide a strong team to develop, construct and operate best- -in- -class wind projects.

The largest single consumer of energy in the world, the Department of Defense is mandated to meet at least 25 percent of its facilities’ energy needs with re-newable energy by 2025.

In total, the Department of Defense has commit-ted to invest more than $7 billion to deploy three gigawatts of renewable energy in Army, Navy and Air Force installations by 2025, the equivalent of powering 583,000 homes.

“EverPower is pleased to have been chosen to sup-port the Army Corp and the Department of Defense in their efforts to add renewable energy to their energy supply,” said Jim Spencer, EverPower Wind Holdings CEO. “We believe our company; along with our part-ners, is uniquely qualified to help the Army and DOD achieve their goal of energy security and long- -term power savings from locally sited wind turbines.”

GE aND GDf SUEZ ENERGY ROMaNIa fUEl WIND GROWtH IN ROMaNIaGE finalized the installation and started the testing of 20 GE 2.5-103 wind turbines for a 50MW wind en-ergy project under construction by GDF SUEZ Energy Romania in the town of Baleni, located in Romania’s southeastern Moldavian region. When it begins oper-ating, the wind farm will generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of 50,000 houses in Romania. GE will support the Baleni wind farm’s long-term availability through a 10-year, full-service maintenance agreement.

“We selected GE’s wind technology for its proven reliability, excellent references from the grid opera-tor and high availability track record,” said Eric Stab, chairman and CEO of GDF SUEZ Energy Romania. “We are glad to power this wind energy project in Ro-mania with GE turbines.”

In addition to supplying, erecting and commis-sioning the wind turbines, GE has signed a 10-year, full-service agreement to support the operation of the Baleni wind farm. The service contract includes GE’s condition monitoring system. GE will have permanent on-site support and work with local GE service and parts distribution centers to maximize availability and customer production.

Romania’s energy demand is expected to grow 400 MW annually until 2016, and the new wind farm could meet 12.5 percent of that anticipated growth.

COMpaNY pROfIlE

founded by an industry pioneer 35 years ago, Juhl Energy, Inc. focuses on community wind development, while laying the groundwork for growing its ownership and operation division.

JUHl ENERGY, INC.By Stephen Sisk

windsystemsmag.com 13

WHEN It COMES tO COMMUNItY wind development, Dan Juhl is nothing less than a legend. He wrote the book... well, co-wrote it anyway. He is a Vietnam War veteran. In a former life, he was a rock star—playing lead guitar alongside his front-woman wife Mary, in the band Renegade (not to be confused with the mid-80s California-based Hispanic rock trio of the same name).

But Juhl’s career didn’t really take off until he arrived on the scene at Woodstock... Minnesota.

It was there in 1983—just five years into his wind energy career—that Dan Juhl began consulting work for wind farm developers in the U.S. and abroad. Based on this consulting experience, Juhl formed a wind energy development strategy geared toward shifting ownership of wind farm projects—wholly or partially—to the community or other entity the project would service.

Adopting this concept as an operating philosophy, Juhl was highly instrumental in developing the commonly accepted business model for community wind farms. The model remains largely unchanged today.

In 1988, Dan and Mary founded DanMar—the company that would eventually evolve into Juhl Energy, Inc. Using the community wind model, DanMar developed a wind farm for the city of Marshall, Minnesota—the first of its kind in the U.S.

DanMar developed 13 community wind projects totaling 118MW of installed capacity during the years leading up to 2008, when the company went public and changed its name to Juhl Wind, Inc.

Today, the company has offices in Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Madison, Wisconsin. The main office, however, is located in Pipestone—a small town in the wind-centric southwest corner of Minnesota. It’s about 10 miles west of the company’s first office in Woodstock. One could even say it’s in the same community.

Since inception, the company has built a sizable portfolio of business segments and assets covering all areas of community wind development and its associated services and industries.

In recent efforts toward diversification, the company is now also involved in solar, biomass, and natural gas energy generation.

“We always had the view to take Dan’s community wind concept and expand upon it for community energy, and to kind of break the logjam of capital,” said John Mitola, president of Juhl Energy, Inc. “Most wind power development companies have

some tie to the large, institutional investment community.”

According to Mitola, survival in that market climate means that a development company has to prove to investors that it is committed to long-term operations, and has the resources to carry out that plan.

“To remain independent and attract all forms of capital, you’ve got to be able to show people that you’ve got engineers and technicians that can respond to a complex problem on a moment’s notice anywhere in North America,” he said. “Diversification is important to make us sustainable, but it is also really important to provide confidence to investors.”

Reflecting that diversification, the company altered its name to Juhl Energy, Inc. earlier this year.

The company structure now consists of five subsidiary companies, each representing a dedicated segment of the energy industry—project development, operations and maintenance services, engineering and consulting, small-scale renewable systems, and IPP/asset ownership.

Juhl Energy Development, Inc. is the energy project development arm of the company, focused on large-scale wind, solar, and cogeneration projects. This segment performs a full-range of development services, including siting and feasibility, finance, design, construction, and operations for customers seeking to develop wind or solar projects for industrial sites, municipal utilities, universities, farmers, and large commercial properties.

“We are focused on wind development, but we’ve been changing our focus from medium-scale utility PPA-driven projects to on-site projects, and to real community-based projects where we would be serving municipal electric companies,” Mitola said.

To date, the company has completed development on 22 wind farms totaling more than 195MW of installed capacity. Juhl Energy is currently involved in the development of more than 25 wind farm projects that will comprise over 405MW of capacity upon completion.

The company’s asset ownership and operations subsidiary—Juhl Renewable Assets, Inc.—currently owns three wind farms totaling 21.7MW of capacity, and is focused on expanding that portfolio through the acquisition of existing wind, solar, and other renewable energy generation plants.

“Our biggest thrust in renewable assets is to acquire existing wind farms. We believe we are the

only viable buyer of existing wind farms under 50MW,” Mitola said. “The big utility companies, they don’t want assets of that size. There are very few out there who are very serious about owning and operating wind power in the long term.”

By the company’s estimate, growth opportunities are significant, with more than 500 small (50MW or less) wind farms currently online in the U.S. Examples of projects Juhl is seeking to acquire would be those in which the current owner is seeking liquidity, as well as projects that are nearing the end of their PTC benefit.

In raising capital for future acquisition and development, the company again took a cue from its founder’s guiding philosophy of community and private ownership.

“We believe we are the only wind company in the U.S. that has allowed individual investors to come into these wind projects alongside us,” Mitola said.

The capital campaign includes the issuance of Juhl Renewable Assets preferred stock, which to date has raised $5.5 million through private offering. The company expects to offer the stock publicly in 2014, Mitola said.

The company’s services division, consisting of Juhl Energy Services and Juhl Tower Services, contracts with wind farm operators to provide administrative and on-site operations support, full-time plant monitoring, and a comprehensive portfolio of maintenance functions. Tower Services personnel provide support for wind turbine towers, and—in a break from its renewable energy focus—cellular communications towers.

With the acquisition of Power Engineers Collaborative in 2012, Juhl expanded its consulting services arm. Working primarily with utilities, municipalities, industrial sites, and independent power producers, PEC provides a full range of engineering services (power, mechanical, electrical, and process), as well as comprehensive project development—from planning and design through construction.

In the small-scale market, Juhl Renewable Energy Systems designs and sells systems targeted to customers with smaller, on-site generation and backup needs—small businesses, homeowners, school buildings, and landowners, among others. Products include:

• Solarbank—an on-site, pre-packaged solar power system designed to reduce utility dependence and ensure power availability.

• Windharvester—a 30kW distributed wind turbine, utilizing unique controls normally reserved for utility-scale WTGs.

• Powerbank—an on-site backup power system, providing an on-demand energy source when grid power is unavailable.

Although Juhl’s development and ownership projects have been concentrated in the Midwest thus far, the company is currently expanding that reach to include the Eastern and Western U.S., as well as parts of Canada.

for Gear Machinery

Gould & Eberhardt is a pioneer in high-speed gear gashing with large diameter carbide-inserted cutters. Our new line of machines has a rigid design and heads engineered with state of the art gear gashing cutter technology. Gear gashing technology has opened many gear cutting applications in wind energy, mining, off-highway construction and other coarse pitch gearing.

Our gasher/hobbers are equipped with the new G&E interchangeable cutter head design. This design provides the option for both internal and external heads on a single column machine with capacities up to 5.5 meters.

Custom Fit Covers for Shipping/TransportationTranshield custom fit covers are a superior alternative to heavy, expensive tarps or conventional hand wrapping. Transhield is aunique combination of shrink wrap and fabric that provides premium protection for wrapping products for transportation orstorage. This material is made into custom fit covers, tailored tofit your application.

Transhield covers are easy to install and the added ability to shrink the cover allows for a tight fit, resulting in quality protection from the factory to the field for nacelles, tower sections, root ends, hubs, gearboxes, blades and other products. This results in a smoother transition from factory to field.

Quick like a cover. Tight like a shrink wrap.

Wind farms are springing up across Iowa.Iowa’s huge open fi elds and relatively steady 18-mph wind make it an ideal location for wind turbines, and business is booming:› Iowa generates the most kilowatts per square kilometer of any state and had

nearly 3,000 turbines installed as of 2013.

› As of 2012, Iowa was generating 25% of its total electricity requirements from wind, the highest percentage of any state in the U.S.

› Iowa ranks third behind only Texas and California in total megawatts of wind energy produced.

› Between 2009 and 2012, Iowa generation capacity nearly doubled, while national capacity grew by more than 350%.

All of this has created exciting new job opportunities in the wind turbine industry. Wind energy companies continue to invest heavily in Iowa and have a crucial need for workers who know how to build, operate, repair and maintain huge wind turbines.

Q&a

CaN YOU tEll US a lIttlE aBOUt laUfERS WIND’S OBStRUCtION lIGHtING SYStEM fOR WIND faRMS? HOW DOES It WORk?The Aircraft Detection Sight Solution (ADSS) is a radar-activated obstruction lighting system for wind farms. When there are no aircraft in the vicinity of a farm, the obstruction lights are off. When the radar detects one or more aircraft in the vicinity, the lights are turned on until all aircraft have left.

HOW DID tHE IDEa fOR tHIS altERNatIVE appROaCH tO OBStRUCtION lIGHtING COME aBOUt?Many small airports have pilot-con-trolled lighting on their runways. The bright runway lights are off until need-ed, and can be controlled via a pilot’s radio when coming in for a landing. The ADSS is essentially an automated, radar-controlled version of that system for obstructions. It’s important that sta-tionary obstructions be lit in order to warn aircraft pilots against possible col-lisions, but the lights don’t need to be on when there are no aircraft around.

(70/7460-1k) DOES NOt MENtION RaDaR-CONtROl. WHat IS tHE CURRENt StatUS REGaRDING tHE SYStEM WItH tHE faa?We believe the FAA is doing a fine job of balancing the needs of the wind industry with their principal mandate for aviation safety. They are reviewing draft language now. I hope the updated FAA Advisory Circular, which contains a new section on radar activated lighting called Aircraft Detection Systems, comes out by the end of 2013.

tEll US aBOUt YOUR COMpaNY’S RElatIONSHIp WItH tHE WIND ENERGY INDUStRY IN tHE DEVElOpMENt Of tHIS SYStEM?We are in communication with various obstruction light vendors so that the proper interfaces between their technologies and ours can be worked out to maximize safety and performance. We also speak with various turbine manufacturers to understand the best methods for in-tegration for wind farm deployments. Finally, we work with developers to let them know that they have a new arrow in their quiver in dealing with objections from local communities and in mitigating impact on the avian population.

laUfER plaCES a GOOD DEal Of EMpHaSIS ON IMpROV-ING NIGHttIME aEStHEtICS DUE tO tHE aDSS. CaN YOU talk aBOUt tHat a lIttlE?With an ADSS system deployed on a wind farm, the nighttime aes-thetic impact is near zero. There are not that many low-flying general aviation aircraft flying at all hours of the night in areas where wind farms are located. When the lights do come on, nearby residents can be confident that there is a specific safety purpose for that action.

laUfER StatES It BElIEVES tHE aDSS IS tHE SafESt OBStRUCtION lIGHtING SYStEM COMING tO MaRkEt. HOW SO?The Laufer Wind ADSS is the only radar-activated lighting system that has been engineered from the ground up for the specific application of controlling obstruction lights on wind farms. We also believe that we have the most robust systems engineering which will activate the lights in the event of component failure, which will be a requirement from the FAA.

We believe that deploying the Laufer Wind ADSS on a wind farm pro-vides the best solution for addressing NIMBY concerns about obstruc-tion lighting, while still meeting the marking requirements from the FAA.
