Editor-in-chief - Peter M cHugh

As we, the youth of America, make ready to take up tl1e reins of the world's destiny , we ,·o,,· that by our deeds we shall be kno\\'n. The eyes of all our elders are now upon us in \\'atchful antic ipation of the fruition of their labors. i\ luch work and training has been expended by many se!Aess people to de,·elop to the uttermost our minds and bodies. In us they see the future of a better world through our intelligent appli· cat ion of our knowledge and wisdom. In us they see the realization of tl1ose ideas and goals which they haYe failed to accomplish. We must fulfill the trust and confidence tha t our parents, teachers, and friends haYe placed in us. The task before us demands that we continually stri,·e to utilize e,·ery talent poss ible-our experiences. our education . our latent capabilities-in the best service of our fello"· man .

Let our deeds express only the highest moral aspirat ions in all our future endeavors.

l e t our deeds exemplify honest striYing for indi,·idual success as preparation for greater triumphs.

Let our deeds illustrate the ,·irtues of life- lm·e. 5acrifice. service, integri ty-qualities which ,~·ill lead us to participate in

the building of a better world. To those who sometimes fear that thev do not understand

us, and to all others who question our sincerity, we say: " 1 OSCITATE NOS ACTIS-By our deeds you shall know us."

debate

The Debating T eam, although one of our least knmn 1 organizations, is one of the best. Fe,v people realize the qualificat ions of a debator. In the fi rst pl ace. debators must he a special breed to derive sa tisfaction from a day of debating, ll'h ich may require participation in fn·e intense mental battl es. Dehators \\'ork for ll'eeks p reparing for these da~·s: ,niting letters and speeches, selecting evidence, and mentalh- condit ion ing themseh-es for any t~·pe of case.

As the basic e lement of Debate is speech, a terrif~·ing topic, debate is mnlooked by the studen t bod y.

I n the past three years, the group of senior debators has produced unobtrusi,-cl~ a remarkable series of successes. These accompli~hments arc amazing, considering that only four to six debarors ,,·ere ,·arsit~ at any one time. ln our freshman year, although our debators ,1ere green as g rass, some ,,·ere alread,· \'arsit~· a lternates. The old , ·arsity, g radu ating in our sophomore year, left our debators \\'ith varsit~· responsibil ities. It ,1·as th is year that our school ,1·as ;'\lorrheastern i\ lassachusetts Champions and that the Negati,·e \\·on four out of fi ve in the State Semi -11nals. The t\' egative al so posted a fine 32--+ season record in varsi t)' competition. Our junior year team placed second in the Suburban League. ln the last round of competition , although Chelmsford defeated Keith , perhaps the finest team in N ew England, ,1-c lost in total point score. ,\!though less ::icti,·e, the i'\egative also produ ced a fine 21-3 record defeating Keith t,1·0 out of three times.

T his year, four, four-yea r, cage,· debators sight on the Suburban League championship. W e lea,·e a group of line ,·arsity debators, and hope that the~· ll'ill keep Chclmsford's debating future secure.

student council

U nder the able and energetic leadership of President Brian Popolizio and Mr. George J. Betses, advisor, the Student Council has completed another successful year.

As al\\'ays, the Student Council has been acci ,·e in many projects within the school. Among these " ·ere sponsorship of the paid assembly programs, ushering at the Christmas Concert, and assisting \\'ith the faculty play. The Council managed the refreshment stand during football games and, with the Booster Club, operated the loudspeaker system. The Annual Talent Sho\\' and P ost-Valentine Dance, the biggest social undertaking of the year, "·ere both verv successful. The Student Council contributed to the United Fund on behalf of the student bocl~· and at C hristmas time adopted a needy familv.

The Student Council again sponsored the major a thletic awards. This vea r the awards were presented, so that the jackets, sweaters, and letters cou ld be enjoyed at ·c. H . S., a t the end of each sport's season.

The Council is especially proud of Richard i\ lolloy who was elected State President for 1963-64. He has presided over many meetings and in Febniar~· attended the I louse of Burgesses a t vVill iamsburg, Virg inia. The Council members acti,-cly supported "Rich" in his duties and attended the Eastern Division Winter Conference in Canton and the State Con,·ention in Springfield.

The Student Council \\·as also proud to have Hannelore Andrae, our exchange student, as a guest at many meetings.

The Council l\ !embers are looking forn·ard to the annual picnic, their re,rnrd for a job \\·ell done. Again, the Student Council is to be commended for high standards of performance and for active contributions to the \\·ell-being of the student body at C. H. S.

The 1963-1964 basketball season, having been successfully completed, followed many others into histor~·- Let's look back to a typical afternoon on the court. Before the game began, co-captains Joan Crane and Carol Enis met and shook hands with the opponents' captains. The buzzer rang and the game began. One of the opponents' forwards started \Yith the ball. As she dribbled toward the basket, our guards Pat Vincent, Donna Batts and Janet Batts were alert and ready. A shot \\·as attempted, blocked and rebounded by C helmsford. Our roving forward dribbled down the court, passed the ball to Captain Enis. From Carol it went to Captain Crane, Joan ie hook passed it to Janet Coflin, Janet fa ked fi rst and then, SWISH!

H alftime came and the team disappeared into the locker room for oranges and a "pep" talk from i\Irs. Nancy Ed\rnrdsen. During the second half Coach Edwardsen requently substin1ted from ou r strong second string includ ing Faith Woodward, Nancy Phillips, Carol Guilmette, Mary Der\ngclis and Janice l\lcKittrick. 'vVe were only a few poi nts ahead when the buzzer sounded, the game \ l"aS o\·er and \\·e had won! Going into the locker room the sound of g irls' tal king and laughing echoed through the gym as they traditionally laughed at their mistakes and complained about the referees.

The gym is quiet 110\1, the court is em pty, the gi rl s have 11nished their last game ending a good season. To next year's team we \1·ish al l the friendliness, sportsmanship, and spirit which has made this year's team a successful one. T o i\ lrs.
