L Company, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, from Camp Pendleton, Calif., used military operations in urban terrain training at Kahuku Training Area to get its Marines into deployment mode, said GySgt. "It gets us up on tactical proficiency and prepares us more in ease we see combat while on float. We'll be able to deal with situations in a more timely manner because the train- ing is fresh in our heads." During their stay in KTA, the MEU Marines ran patrols, med- ical evacuation drills and tactien1 maneuver which would be used in urban jungle environments, according to Simmons. After they operated from a "tent city" in KTA, the Marines got practical application training with buildings and pop-up tar- gets here. "We had to clear hostile areas and how to negotiate the urban environment," said Simmons. More MEUs are expected to stop off in Hawaii to boot up their tactical efficiency before deploy- ment, according to Simmons. "I will be talking about where MWR stands right now, pro- gram-wise and finan- cially," said Lindsey. "I will explain how our programs are funded as well as where the money goes." Valerie Griffin Staff writer As part of a 10-day orientation trip across the Pacific theater, Dr. John B. Goodman, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Industrial Affairs and Installations, visited various military installations on Oahu last week. One of Goodman's major responsi- bilities is to manage the Department of Defenses infrastructure budget and policies which includes housing. In an effort to gauge the quality of life of Marines and their family members, he visited housing areas and barracks here. "At Kaneohe Bay the commanding general showed me the area sur- rounding Kansas Tower which is the sight of future development" Goodman explained. The potential layout of the new housing area will provide more green areas and places for kids that some older military housing areas here lack, he added. "I also saw housing that was in the process of revitalization. The prima- ry job at Kaneohe for family housing is to revitalize a lot of the older hous- ing and bring it up to the kind of standards we ought to be offering our Marine families," Goodman stressed. Goodman further explained under current budget rules additional 802 - type housing will not be undertaken. "That housing was based on promising developers long-term leases. The Department of Defense has to pay up-front for the cost of those leases, which reduced its economic attractiveness," he said. On the other hand, in 1996, Congress authorized DoD to engage in a range of ventures within the pri- vate sector on a five-year trial basis to draw on their capital to help improve existing housing. Get ready to vote this year Sgt.Wilfiam Poff Stair writer With this year's presidential election right around the corner, Marines who want to exercise their right to vote must ensure they are registered. The time limit to register to vote is quickly drawing down. "Even thoueh you don't live in your home state, exercise your right to vote," said Capt. Maureen B. Murphy, base adjutant and base voting assistance officer "Once the effort is put forth to get registered, the whole voting proce-s t- is easy." An individual must quickly register, because the Board of Elections wants all absentee ballots 30 days before the election, Murphy said. An alternative to mailing in ballots is faxing;" said Murphy. "When sending back the finished ballot a waiver must be included with the fax stating By fax- ing this ballot, I hereby waive my right to a secret ballot.' and the waiver must be signed and dating before it's sent." The best source of information for voting procedures is an individual's command voting assistance officer, Murphy said. For more information about Murphy at 257-0900. "This offers a terrific opportunity to speed up the process of housing revi- talization to improve our quality of life. In the 1997 Authorization Act we received the authority to extend this to barracks which we did not previously have," Goodman stressed. There are presently 4000 new units throughout the world in various stages of development, ranging from the request for proposal to actual ground-breaking. Improving the quality of life for military personnel is a top priority for the Secretary of Defense, accord- ing to Goodman. In a five-year period, of which DoD is in the second year, the Secretary increased the available budget for quality of life issues by $2.7 billion. This increase has been directed primarily to family housing units and barracks, Goodman said. The trip has been very useful not only in viewing buildings, but meeting those who dwell there, according to Goodman. "It's very heartening when you work on a range of policy issues to see and meet many of the folks who will benefit from that. Those of us working in Washington know what a fine job they're doing," concluded Goodman. "After all, the soldiers, sailors, air- men and Marines certainly are the reason I'm doing my job and provide me with an added reason to go back and work harder on the issues I'm responsible for."

Every Clime and Place Squad from 2/3 earns top grunt honors LCpI. Jerry Pierce 8th & I Public Affairs

The top infantry squads from each Marine division were recognized during the final parade of the season at 8th and 1.

The parade, attended by more than 4,000 spectators, was the highlight of a week-long visit for the Marines, which included tours of the Pentagon, local museums, the White House and Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

Marine Corps Rifle Squad Competitions have been taking place since 1958 with a short break during the Vietnam Conflict and the Persian Gulf War. The competition is used to recognize the best rifle squad in the Fleet Marine Force.

In a ceremony prior to the evening parade, Gen. Charles C. Krulak, commandant of the Marine Corps, and SgtMaj. Lewis G. Lee, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, awarded the Super Squad Medal to each of the squad members.

"The medal is a tangible symbol of the dis- tinguishing pride these Marines have achieved for not only themselves, but for the Marines back in their units. That's what makes not only the medal special, but the whole competition," commented Lee.

Gen. LCpI. Jerry Pierce

Charles Krulak, right, commandant of the Marine Corps, congratulates this year's winners.

Part of the success of the squads was attrib- uted to the squad leaders; seasoned infantry Marines with knowledge and skills from which the newer Marines can draw.

Led by Sgt. Christopher L. Buck, the 1st Marine Division champions were from 1st Squad, 3rd Platoon, F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The 2nd MarDiv champions, led by Sgt. John D. Reid, were from 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, E Co., 2/6, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marines of 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, G Co., 2/3, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, led by Sgt. Mark E. Mitchell, were the 3d MarDiv champions.

The 4th MarDiv champs were the Marines of 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, E Co., 2/25, from New Orleans, led by Cpl. Fredrick S. Gonzalez. For four months the squads have competed

in battlefield skills competitions at the divi- sion level. Events for the annual competition included patrolling, attack and defense, land navigation, supporting arms coordination, marksmanship and physical fitness.

"In all my life I never thought I would be the recipient of an award like this. It's through the support and motivation of the Marines around me that we were able to succeed at such a difficult task," said Gonzalez, of Lebanon, Pa.

"Infantry Marines are the heart and soul of the Corps and to have them be recognized as the guests of honor at the Evening Parade was probably the biggest thrill of their career," said Lee. "To be saluted by the com- mandant and the Secretary of the Navy is one of the greatest non-combat honors they can receive."

Impact Area Why aren't we freq-hopping? Sgt. Luke Putman 3rd Marine Regiment

y are we not frequency-hopping? That's the question on the minds of communicators in 3d Marine Division.

Most of the units in 3d MarDiv have fielded the Marine Corps' newest communications gear, the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System. This communications gear is capable of freq-hopping on 100 fre- quencies a second while in cypher mode - which con- verts scrambled transmis- sions. The other two divi- sions have been freq -hop- ping ping for almost two years with great success.

We here at 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines have recently fielded this new gear, but Putman will we ever be able to use this gear for what it was intended? The amount of training required to get all units to be as proficient as the 1st and 2d MarDivs is astounding. I was a SINCGARS instructor when 5th Marine Regiment was being

S fielded with SENCGARS. l'1'1' (the makers of the SINCGARS radio) sent out quotas to the units of 1st MarDiv to assist their own instructors with teaching the division how to use this new gear. NI am not allowed to pass on the knowledge that the Marine Corps has taught me, I stand a

a

chance of losing this very valuable lmowledge. Marines coming to 3d MarDiv from the

Communications and Electronics School in Twentynine Palms, Calif., are being trained in the art of freq-hopping. They come to this divi- sion thinking the whole Marine Corps is using the SINCGARS radio to its fullest potential. However, that is not the case. Their valuable knowledge Will soon be lost because they will not be able to use the gear the way they were taught at school. .

Soon, 3/3 will be deploying to Okinawa. There, we will not be able to freq-hop because host nation regulations restrict the U.S. military from the use of frequencies not in their opefational spectrum. What good is it to have this new gear if it not going to be used to its fullest potential?

If we are going to be effective in combat, we need to be effective with our communications equipment. Every Marine knows the key to suc- cess in battle is effective communications. We need to get on the ball and get our Marines in 3d MarDiv trained in the art of freq-hopping.

The Marine Corps is famous for being able to adapt and overcome. We finally make a leap into high-tech with the SINCGARS radio, yet we are using it in the same manner as the old AN/PRC-77s. Effective command and control is dependent on communication. SINCGARS, with its freq-hopping capability, is undeniably a force multiplier. We need to incorporate freq-hopping into all training exercises at home and aboard.

Strong solicitation gets results in CFC Drive Maj. John Manley CFC Public Affairs

After three weeks, donors have contributed almost $1.7 million to eligible charities par- ticipating in the 1996 Combined Federal Campaign. Although reports reflect less total participa-

tion than for the same period in 1995, more people are responding to the solicitation effort by CFC Key Persons and volunteers, said Col. Gale Heaivilin, campaign project officer.

So far, 31 percent of the 73,000 employees in the federal work force have been contacted,

with 22 percent contributing. during the first three weeks of 1995's campaign, 47 percent of the work force was contacted with 27 percent donating.

"The solicitation to donation ratio is very encouraging so far," said Heaivilin. "It is evi- dent in this year's numbers that the 'quality ask' is taking place."

CFC training officers have encouraged CFC workers to use guest speakers and a CFC video during presentations, and to make sure every potential donor is personally con- tacted, said Major Richard Edgington, train- ing officer.

Just enough is enough energy SSgt. Donavon Ubben Bose locilit;es

The last five U.S. presidents have given the same message concerning energy consump- tion - reduction on federal installations is a must. Not only it is a must but former President Bush signed into law a bill requiring federal installations reduce energy consumption by 20 percent by the year 2000. President Clinton

increasing this reduction amount to 30 percent by the year 2005.

With DoD budgets decreasing and Utilities cost increas- ing, we can not afford to keep feeding the Energy

money could be better spent on maintenance of existing facilities and quality of life projects here.

With October being slated as Energy Awareness. Month, take a look at your energy con- sumption habits and do what you can to help achieve the 30 percent reduction goal. One example is to abide by the base watering hours, which

are setup for conserving water and also for proper care

lawns,accord- ing to profes- sional land- scapers.

Another example is to use lighting. air condition- ing, and appli- ances when needed and to shut them off when areas are not occupied. There is a lot everyone can do energy use. You

Hogs. Energy Hogs consume an estimated $1 million per year in unneces- sary energy consumption.

Who are these energy hogs? They are everyone who does not use water and electricity conservatively. It is estimated that 1 0 percent of the Base utility Bills could be saved annually just through using energy conservatively. This

to help reduce just need to be aware of the wasteful acts and correct them. Your cooperation will not

only be greatly appreciated, but will net substantial sav- ings. If you have any energy conservation questions refer to Base Order 11300.13 or call SSgt. Donavan Ubben at 257- 21 7 1 , ext 286.

PFC C.P. Smith, food services specialist, Anderson Hall, prepares the new buffet line for incoming Marines. Sgt. William Poff

Buffet line result of troop input Sgt. William Poff StaH writer

Anderson Hall's new buffet line is a product of making opinions known.

The messhall started the buffet breakfast through a request - the first of several programs scheduled for trial use.

"We are here to satisfy the troops," said MSgt. David A. Smith, opera- tions chief, Installation and Logistics. "We will try any reasonable request that is brought forward.

"By the same token, we want feed- back," Smith added. "Without feed- back from the Marines we are trying to support, there is no way to deter- mine a program's viability"

The mess hall adopted the buffet line with some trepidation, said

Smith. "Marines can take all they want, but

should eat all they take," Smith said. "Also if a certain item is running low, don't be greedy and take a lot of it. Once it's noticed the pan is nearly empty, a new pan of food will be brought out to replace it. Then the individual is welcome to get seconds.

"Since the Marines can serve them- selves, they need to ensure their hands are clean before coming into the mess hall," added Smith. "Sanitation and personal hygiene is always a mess hall's chief concern. This is no place to be spreading germs when hundreds of Marines are served here everyday."

The mess hall is currently working on the installation of a restroom so patrons will have proper facilities and

be able to cleanse their hands before eating, said Smith.

A test for take-out meals will be ran for three months starting Monday Marines will be capable of taking food from any of the mess hall's food lines in take-out boxes, Smith said.

"The three-month test will deter- mine if this is a viable program," Smith said. "Again what the mess hall needs is a `yay or nay' from the troops on whether they like it."

With the exception of having waiters and waitresses, Anderson Hall is ful- filling recommendations to emulate a restaurant-style atmosphere and attract the hungry chow-time masses.

For more information or recommen- dations about any of the programs offered in Anderson Hall, call Smith at 257-1621.

3/3 tests * prowess durin MCCRE CpI. Michael Wiener Staff writer

MOLOKAI'I - Marines from 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment recently put their mettle to the test during the Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluation on Molokai'i.

The battalion flew to the island for a three-day exercise to test their skills and find their weaknesses. In order to deploy to Okinawa in January, the unit must pass the MCCRE. "The Marine Corps has a checklist to

evaluate a unit's combat readiness," said LtCol. Gerold Flotte, senior evalua- tor, "but there are so many parts to it."

After touching down on Molokai'i, the battalion hiked approximately six miles to the training area. Once there, they quickly set into a defensive position and got down to business, much to the liking of the evaluators. "The deployment here was good," said

Flotte. "They came in, consolidated and set up their communications. They also sent out their patrols immediately to search for the enemy." For almost two days, patrols were sent

out to probe enemy lines and attain as much information about them as possi- ble. The enemy, F Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, played an important role throughout the exer- cise. "Through our aggression, we show

them their strengths and weaknesses," said Lt. Jodie Lynch, commander of "enemy" forces. "Once they know what they need work on, they will improve and be more prepared for combat." F Co. also played the aggressor in

Puhokaloa Training Area in October, adding a little fuel to the fire. "After aggressing them in PTA, we

know they're are out for us," said Lynch. "It makes Marines work harder and improves training for everyone." After a final patrol, a warning order

for a night attack was given. The bat- talion prepared to take the hill occupied by enemy forces. Moving at night to remain undetected, the Marines headed for the final objective of the operation, all the while being observed by evalua- tors.

"My job is to evaluate the squad leader and the squads," said Cpl. Jason Barnes, evaluator. "I watch them and see how well they operate and perform the mission. Movement to an objective is a pret- ty big thing."

Once at the objective, the Marines attacked. Neither enemy fire nor steep rocky terrain slowed their progress. The enemy was overrun as the mission was accomplished almost flawlessly. However, the victory was- n't just in the taking of a hill, but the experience gained from the entire exercise.

3/3 passed the MCCRE with a "mis- sion capable" rating and returned home to Marine Corps Base Hawaii Friday.

Judge lends weapons for Uniform Pageant ht:yr1Nrilliom Poff

HONOLULU - Being a district judge in farni- , ly court probably leaves little to the imagination,

but Darryl Y. C. Choy has a character as unique as any.

Once inside the District Courthouse building, and past security is a massive lobby with columns, plants and a large staircase leading to the second floor courtrooms where Choy conducts business.

Choy's office would disappoint people who believe judge's chambers should all manners of legal works, papers and the dusky smell of old wood. The office looked more-like a stockbrock- er's, rather than a judge's.

Choy holds special pride in family, as pictures on his wall show And his interest in militaria abounds throughout the office as well, with minia- ture toy soldiers in skirmishing formations and his scale replicas of black powder cannons. Choy's interests have a special tie with the Marine Corps Balls Pageant of uniforms. Each year he loans an authentic World War II M-1 Garand rifle to corn-

- plete the Marine uniform representing that peri- od.

"I gained interest in WWII weapons after finding out I had two uncles who survived the Dec. 7

attack at Schofield Barracks," Choy said. "I have almost completed recreating my uncles uniforms. They were in the 24th and 25th Divisions at the time.

"I acquired the M-1 from the Division of Civilian Marksmanship 15 years ago," Choy added. "I pri- marily collect Axis weapons from WWII, but have pieces in my collection from as far back as the

Sgt. William PofF

Judge Darryl Choy, district judge, Family Circuit Court, regularly lends weapons for the Uniform Pageant.

Civil War. I also have other types of weapons car- ried by Marines. Another rifle carried by Marines was the M-1 carbine, a smaller rifle similar to the Garand. Plus, I have a M1903 Springfield, a bolt- action rifle very popular with Marines earlier in this century"

Not only does Choy collect martial weapons, he also enjoys shooting and participates in competi- tive matches, most are run through the Puuloa Rifle and Pistol Club, who are affiliated with

Morale Welfare and Recreation at MOB Hawaii. "Shooting is my relaxation, and believe me, you

need something as an outlet after sitting on a bench all week long," he said, sitting behind a massive Koa-wood desk.

When he's not smiling, Choy radiates the pres- ence of a "hangin-judge." When displayed howev- er, his gleaming smile and easy going manner betray his hardened appearance. Despite cases with unscrupulous individuals, Choy's positive

attitude and unwavering commitment to make the best decision possible define his character.

"After dealing with families and their problems every day, I've learned to appreciate my family more," said Choy, who has a wife and three chil- dren. "It really puts a positive perspective on all the minor crisis a normal family endures. I'm very happy with how good I have it." Although he does not have previous military

experience, Choy was a conscript in his high school's ROTC program.

"In my high school days, being in ROTC was mandatory," Choy said. "I believe ROTC put disci- pline and character into youth back then. It would not hurt to see a program like that brought back."

Choy's cure for modern society is simple, empha- sizing ideals in line with the Marine Corps' Core Values to develop family and youth.

"I like what the Marines are doing at Kaneohe," the 1972 graduate of Santa Clara University said. "The Family Services Center makes K-Bay the most responsive, family-oriented base in Hawaii. I believe the civilian community would gain much from institutionalizing the same system.

"My advice to Marines is 'Take your attitude off with your shirt," added Choy. "Marines are like our guards. They have a stressful job and some of them don't know how to leave their work at work.

"Once I get home, I let my wife make all the fam- ily decisions; I've made enough all day long," the 15- year judge continued.

"All of my colleagues are like family judges also, right down to how we debate with each other," Choy said. "We are like the Marines, we complain a lot, then dig in and accomplish the mission."

HRO community braces for change during regionalization Sgt. Valerie Griffin St l4 writer

The Human Resources Office here, which takes care of civil service person- nel, has entered a regionalization process and, for everyone within the HRO community, major changes will

The concept of regionalization, com- bining offices with the same objective, has been in the planning process locally for nearly two years.

'The Depai iment of the Navy has decided it can best perform civilian per- sonnel management out of a small number of large regional service centers geographically dispersed," explained Pat L. Brown, Satellite Human Resources Office Manager.

The initial concept was to put the back-room operations in the large regional service centers, because our business is so paper-intensive, and leave the customer interface at the local level," said Carol M. Chostner, Human Resources Director, Marine Corps, Civilian Human Resource Office West. Though HRO personnel will witness a

difference first-hand, to the MCB Hawaii customer, nothing should

appear to change. `We're doing everything we can to

make this transparent to the customer. We still have an office here with a knowledgeable staff so most of the per- sonnel processes winch involve the employees and managers here will con- tinue through this office," Brown said.

'The concept is to have large region- al service centers then at some activ- ities to also have Human Resource Offices like this one.'

Pat Brown manager, Satellite HRO

Eight service centers, including Europe, will service Department of the Navy civil service members.

`The concept is to have these large regional service centers then at some activities to also have Human Resources Offices like this one," Brown said.

Two components drove the push for regionalization, Brown explained.

"One is the economies of scale achieved by having large centralized processing offices. The other is there's some pretty high-powered, impressive technology for doing personnel work the Department of Defense has devel- oped over the last five years and it is still developing."

Quality and timeliness of service should not be interrupted and with upcoming technological advances, may become even quicker and more effi- cient.

"While I'm fairly impressed with some of the technology they've devel- oped, the Navy personnel community will be significantly downsized over the next few years and it takes an awful lot of technology to make up for what the people do," said Brown.

The hook-up with regional centers will be primarily electronic but there is a courier service.

Chostner explained the aim is to eventually reach a paper-free work environment.

"What nn hearing is technology will help up so much cuts won't hurt us as bad," Chostner stressed.

you've seen my summer movies. Nov,; check out. my fall selection of movies, with,

shall we say slightly adjusted plots. Escape from LAX - Starring

Kurt Russell as an aggressive, gun- toting Hare Krishna Who returns from a sabbatical to find Los Angeles International Airport a gaudy imposter of what it used to be. He enlists the help of a young Marine (on his way to Oldnal,va3 to sell dead flowers to passersby "Sir, you're going to buy a flower, and you will do so NOW!" the Leatherneck barks. Sales go through the roof. When a rival Hare Krishna group gets perturbed at Russell's disco-Lint

prices, havoc breaks loose. Rated MSP for More Snake Plissken in movies. That Thing You Do! (in the

bathroom) -Starring four unknowns and Torn Hanks as a bad touring band whose best ideas come when they're using bus station bath- rooms. Songs include When my Wind Blows" and "Your Smell or Mine?" Rated AF for use air freshen- er. The First Wives Club - Starring

Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton as divorced women who get the last laugh on their first husbands when they invent a device designed to leek ste,Ting .wheels. Now rich, they go out and flaunt iro- phy boyfriends 20 years younger than themselves and use the club in -

a variety of comic situations. None of this would be so bad if they didn't still make their ex-husbands pay alimony. Rated .R for Revenge.

Last Man Standing Is Out -, Starring Bruce Willis as a demented hem-type who forces people he does- n't like to play musical chairs, and if you're out, he's going to use his .45 to make sure you're out. Willis uses full -Volume acid rock for his music, and by the time he turns it of every- one wants to be shot Rated PG for pardctilarly galling Maximum Risk - Stoning me as

a movie mogul, who listens to ideas from idiots like, well, me. "Gude! Tye got this great concept for an action movie! Check it out -you get some dinosaurs, Joey Buttafuoco, Heidi Fleiss as his girlfriend, OJ as his sidekick and Don Rickles as the villain, you turn 'ern all loose in a theme park and badabing, bad- aboom! We're grossna' $50 million! Hey, it worked for Spielberg! Whaddava think?' Rated DL for don't listen to anyone who doesn't have an original idea.

Long Kiss Goodnight - Starring Samuel L. JackSon as a sewer main- tenance man and Geena Davis as a lovestruck sewer :groupie in an action epic about trying to escape the clutches of someone who doesn't want you to leave. Some of the catchy but smelly dialogue: "Honey I've got to go," Samuel L. -

says. "I've got to get to the sewers.." Geena bearlaws him. "One mare

kifs'S " They ldss. Suddenly, BOOM! "Was that the sewer exploding?

Jeez, :rye got to go!" Samuel L. yells. "Yeah, yeah, but one more kiss."

She hOlds her sin -lock. The sewer explodes up and down the street, and because Samuel L. couldn't get away from his possessive girlfriend, the -

city is denuded with fdth, muck and raw stench. Rated B for Release me. The Ghost in the Darkness of

the Lion's stomach -Another movie about the exploitation of Africa Starring me as a lion who eats the exploiters and saves Africa. Why do studios keep making these stupid movies? We'll never See one about how the Moors ran amok in Spain in the 8th century; I'll bet. I hope this film goes down the tubes quickly. Rated E for Exploitation.

Star of Honolulu is sea-going mainstay off Honololu shores

Sunsets provide entertainment during the evening cruises.

LCpI. Steven Williams Staff writer

NOLULU - Popular reasons peo-

le visit Hawaii are dinner cruises, its crystal blue waters and the islands' colorful sunsets. The Star of Honolulu has all three.

While photo opportunities of a Hawaiian sunset highlight the cruise, the Star also offers a full-course dinner, dancing and live entertainment. "It's beautiful, something

like the Love Boat," said Sally A. Battista, tourist from Gardnerville, Nev. "They've got great food, fantastic entertainment and the crew is so nice. I would definitely recommend military come see it at least once."

"I like the view the best," said Gale Rowbotham, a Kaowa, Colo., native. "We're

visiting my daughter, who's in the Navy at Pearl Harbor. This is a nice, relaxing trip for all of us."

Swinging their hips and let- ting Hawaiian words fly from their lips, eight Star of Honolulu dancers performed a Polynesian show called "Legend of the Ocean" com- plete with Pu Ili (bamboo sticks) and a ukelele. Later, the performers

returned to the stage in showboat costumes for Diamond Head Theatre's "Spirit of Boat Days" show. They relived tunes from the old days like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and San Francisco showboat favorites. By the end of the show, they had audience members danc- ing with them.

"I think a lot of these people come here just for the shows," said Alison Maldonado, a

LCpI. Steven Williams

Star of Honolulu dancer and foimer Marine. "I like being an entertainer for the boat and I think that shows in our performances.

Don't plan on staying seat- ed. The show doesn't stop with the performers. From creating a dance train which weaves throughout the entire boat to doing the Hoky Poky, the Star's crew keeps the entertainment hopping all the way into port.

This boat has a good repu- tation for showing everyone a good time and I think all my fellow Marines at Kaneohe should come see it," she added. "I think military members would be surprised at how much fun they can have with something like this."

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK,

wain -As the car moved along Highway 11 toward Kilauea Military Camp, there was a quality to the air rd not noticed since my arrival on Oahu nearly a year ago. I pulled my- jacket up around my neck to escape a chill which intensified as the car climbed higher.

Earlier in the evening, a convertible seemed like an appropriate choice for my visit to the Big Island of Hawaii Now however, with the top down and Jack Frost nipping at more than just my nose, I was having my doubts.

, As my three- vehicle entourage pulled in the front gate of KMC I was glad to have arrived and have the chance to treat what felt like hypothermia. By the time I dragged my bag- gage into the small, but quaint and economi- cal (rates depending on rank) apartment we reserved prior to the trip, I was glad to see heaters in each room and a central fire place.

'Ibo late for the Friday night hula show in the Lava Lounge, we decided to turn in.

At what could be considered a civilized hour to start a vacation, another Marine and I headed for Kona to snorkel. A two-hour drive

e Grif6.,

getting sun-burned, too many novelty shops to count and a bite to eat later, we never quite made it into the water.

Later in the evening, we gathered by the fireplace in the lounge at IOW to swap sto- ries and found out the other group's diving experience had indeed been memorable, com- plete with a moray eel and blood. Luckily, none of our party was injured, though they didn't bother lending assistance to the poor chap who got attacked.

As we made our Sunday schedule we pon- dered a 1-a1C Daily Tour but realized they're offered only on weekdays. The activity lodge does rent equipment from backpacks to vol- leyballs and offers reduced rates on many island activities.

The group explored Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, stopping at every attraction imaginable and then some. I went through four rolls of film.

Monday we stopped at the gift shop and post office to buy post cards and stamps before leaving KMC.

As the plane took off and the Big Island grew smaller, I thought how sad it was I had to leave Oahu to have the best weekend since my arrival in Hawaii.

A simple weekend trip to KNIC made me realize it's possible to have the best of both cli- mates - Oahu and Hawaii.

ple, there is a quiet place of refuge. Near Waikiki in Kapiolani Park, the Honolulu Zoo is an escape from the crazyness of the city to the wilderness, with animals of every size, shape and color. The zoo covers 42 acres of land

and is home to more than 1,250 animals of 265 different species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. The animals are kept in a "natural" setting - places similar to the animals' natural habitat.

"We are still in the process of of modernizing the zoo," said Joe Kimmins, educational depart- ment. "Our newest attraction is the African Savannah."

The ten-acre exhibit is home to animals found in Africa, and con- tinues the natural theme. Two more ecological exhibits are planned for the zoo, the Tropical

Forest and the Pacific Island habitats.

"Being one of the only zoos in the tropics," added Kimmins, "management thought it would be good to specialize in animals of our climate." Hands-on experiences make vis-

iting the zoo fun and interesting. The Petting Zoo is a favorite with kids, where barnyard animals roam around the pen for children to pet. The elephant encounter allows visitors to get up close and personal with two Asian ele- phants. After a short class on earth's largest land animals, the crowd feeds the elephants car-

rots, a treat for both feeder and feedee.

"We want to make the zoo more of an educational place instead of somewhere to just look at ani- mals," said Kimmins. "The Elephant Encounter, as with the other programs, teaches people about animals and nature."

Some other programs offered by the zoo are After School and Zoo Explorers, designed to give kids something to do in the afternoon if both parents are working. Also, three nights a month, dur- ing the full moon, visitors can tour the zoo at night, or come to Snooze at the Zoo, a program which allows visitors to sleep inside the zoo, said Kimmins.

"It is really a different place at night," said Kimmins. "The moon comes up over Diamond Head and lights this place up. It's wild!"

The zoo is open every day except Jan. 1 and Dec. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Several snack bars are available around the zoo to grab a bite to eat and picnics are allowed on the zoo lawns. For more information call 971-7195.

Varsity hoops suffers preseason loss to Army, 72-61

SSgt Stephen Gude

The Marine Varsity's James Speights drives to the basket on an Army defender during one of the Leathernecks' rare fast-break opportunities in a 72-61 loss at the Main Gym here Oct. 17.

SSgt. Stephen Gude Press Chief

"

n old adage in basketball goes He who controls the bdards, con- rols the game."

Well, it's not an old adage, but if might as well have been for the Marine varsity squad Oct. 17 as they lost the battle of the boards and ultimately, the game to the Army varsity team, 72-61. This was a game of "ifs" for the

Leathernecks. "If' they had controlled the boards...

"Getting rebounds was our problem tonight," said Marine center Derek Sangster. "It's not that they were physi- cal - they were trying to be - it's more us not grabbing the ball and putting it away."

The Marines began the game the right way. On the first Marine possession, Curtis Brooks went directly to the rim, drawing a foul. The Marines bolted to a quick 3-0 lead. An indication of things to come for the Army defense?

No. The Marines relaxed into an out- side game, settling for jumpers and rushed shots. Mistakes didn't help either, although obvious travelling by the Army was overlooked by the refer- ees several times.

But Marine coach Michael Terrell was- n't using the refs, or the fact he was missing two of his starters, as an excuse for his team's performance.

"We were just getting outhustled," Terrell said. "We didn't do what we set out to do."

Despite Brooks' five rebounds in the first two minutes of the game, the Army attacked inside, getting second and third shot opportunities almost at will and going on an 11-2 run to take control of the game.

The Army's attack was by design, as head coach Donald Craig put it.

"We came out to play some hard-nosed ball," Craig said. "And that's just what we did."

But the Marines weren't out of the game. Spurred by Wayne Bryant and Sangster getting tough rebounds and Lawrence Harper hitting a three-point- er, the Marines were down only 21-17 with 0:7:30 left in the first half. Peculiarly, the Army tried to take the Corps out of its rhythm with a modified "four:corners" offense, a la North Carolina in the 1970s.

The refs called the soldiers for holding the ball, but if their plan was to break the Marines' rhythm, it worked. The Army defense clamped down, the refs missed another couple of travels by the soldiers, and Army guard Cordell Calviness' three-pointer helped extend the Army lead to 34-23 at the half. It was obvious what the leathernecks

had to do to get back in the game, said Robert Clarke, assistant coach.

"We've got to box out in the middle,"

he said. "They're just getting too many offensive boards."

"If I get three or four chances to make a shot, there's a pretty good chance I'll hit one of them," Terrell said, his irrita- tion with the Army's board work appar- ent. -

"We've got to start playing our game," Brooks said. "We're letting them dictate the game."

Brooks did his part to turn the tide, sky-walking for several blocks, but the Army was able to extend their lead to 52-38 with 0:11:10 to go. Terrell insert- ed a three-guard lineup of Walter Moore, Lawrence Harper and Kiano Black, and the Marines went on a five- point spurt to pull to within nine, 52-43.

But then began the wonderful world of fouls, and the Leatherneeks' effort seemed to dwindle, especially under the boards, where on missed shots, three soldiers went for the ball, usually against only one Marine.

Calviness hit three straight three- pointers in the closing minutes to stave off a late rally by the Marine reserves, highlighted by a high-rising slam from Black.

Terrell was succinct in defeat. "I'm glad we had a game like this in

the preseason," he said. "It gives us a chance to work out our mistakes.

"We can beat the Army," added Terrell. "We just need to be on our game, and we'll get there."

Madman's Football Challenge Again, I have vanquished my foes. Cpl. Matt Miller and I were tied after Sunday with 10-2 records, and even though Oakland defeated San Diego (we both selected Oakland), I won because I was clos- est on points. No one was under 8- 5 this week, so it was a pretty good week for everyone. Even in losing, Miller took over first place overall. I gained two more games on SSgt. Michael Balmer. My cars are already shiny, pool members! You'd better learn to wash yours...

Carolina at Philadelphia -A tough game, but I think Philly's playing better right now. Indianapolis at Washington - The Skins are playing very well, and the Colts are still banged up. Don't count Jim Harbaugh out, though.

Madman

Jacksonville at Cincinnati - For some strange reason, I'm going with the Bengals. NY Giants at Detroit - Easy pick. Pittsburgh at Atlanta - The Steelers should romp, but is the breakout week for the Falcons? St. Louis at Baltimore - The Ravens are a decent team, really. Testaverde's okay. San Francisco at Houston - Oilers in an upset. San Fran's got quarterback problems. Tampa Bay at Green Bay - Mail this one in. Dallas at Miami - Jimmy in the upset, although I wouldn't be surprised if the 'Boys are motivated. Kansas City at Denver - At Mile High, go with Elway. NY Jets at Arizona - Not a lock - the Jets can upset the Cardinals. San Diego at Seattle - Seattle doesn't score much, but San Diego can and will. Buffalo at New England - I'm still not impressed

with Jim Kelly's performance this year. Tie Breaker: Chicago at Minnesota - Minnesota should win, but you never know when Warren Moon's going to be stricken with such maladies as "fumble-itis" or "interception eye." 40 points.

Madman's picks in bold.

Russian Citizens Hail New Lennon and Marx! Emerging Republic Inadvertently Creates Hot New Collectible

IA...All! 1E 111101i

NBC Dateline report has collectors scrambling for these new stamps.

Abkhazia, Soviet Union - Even as UN peacekeeping forces are attempt- ing to broker a cease fire in this emerg- ing Soviet Republic, the tiny province has found a way to poke fun at their former Russian occupiers, and has cre- ated what many collectors consider to be the most clever commemorative postage stamps ever issued.

As their first official stamp release, Abkhazian postal authorities have just issued two legal tender stamps honor- ing a "Lenin and Marx" not generally associated with Russian history, but rather with peace and laughter - John Lennon and Groucho Marx!

"The Russians are obviously sending a message to the world to `Give Peace A Chance'," remarked Jeffrey Franz, of the International Collectors Society in Owings Mills, MD, the worldwide distributor of the stamps. "Little did they know that they've created one of the hottest col- lectibles around!"

The very colorful stamps, which depict a smiling John Lennon and Groucho Marx surrounded by icons of peace and love, are legal for postage in Abkhazia and have been issued in a Limited Edition of just a few thousand sets.

"When you compare that to U.S. commemorative stamps such as Elvis and Marilyn Monroe where hundreds of millions are issued, you can see the irresistible appeal that these stamps will have to Lennon fans, Marx fans and stamp collectors," Franz added.

Each of the stamps is about four times the size of a regular U.S. stamp, and is set within a large and colorful souvenir sheet. Each stamp has a face value of 500 rubles.

"The stamps are really quite stun- ning, in fact NBC Dateline featured them as their Picture of The Week," reported Franz. "Collectors are now seeking them out because of the clever subject matter, their rarity, and because they are the first issue from this emerging nation."

Gotta have'em? They are available for a short time at $9.72 (plus $3 p&h) for the set accompanied by a num- bered Certificate of Authenticity and a free pocket guide containing little known facts about John Lennon and Groucho Marx. The most you can buy is 6 sets. Send your check or money order to ICS, 3600 Crondall Lane, Suite 100SRAB, Owings Mills, MD, 21117, To order by credit card, call toll free 1-800-844-4216.

Bike the Base

More than 400 cyclists participated in the Kailua Mayor's Sunday on Wheels. The path took them from Kailua District Park through the H-3 Gate of MCB Hawaii and down Mokapu Road to the back gate. "The purpose of the event is to promote the need for more bikeways," said Jeremy Harris, mayor of Honolulu. "It also encourages both motorists and bicyclists in sharing the road with each other."

MCB Hawaii takes Regional Team Match Sgt. William Poff Stali writer

The MCBH High Power Rifle and Pistol Team

again made its mark on the marksmanship community in Oahu by winning the Regionals Team Match Sept. 29 with a score of 1110- 13x. The four-man team

beat its closest oppo- nent by over 66 points, giving the Marines their second victory after a four-year dry streak.

"I knew my shooters and felt very confident going into the match," said CWO -2 Eric B. Garcia, base training and operations officer. "The whole team has shot together before, either in matches or practice and everyone had the same confi- dence in each other I had."

During the day of the match, the wind was a major factor in Ulupau crater where the rifle range sits, with gusts blowing up to 20 mph, Garcia said.

"Although the winds were bad, the condi- tions were the same across the line," said Garcia. "Everybody had to fire in the same conditions." The Marine team did

not let the weather get the best of them and fired through the con- ditions. The team gained the lead in the first and sometimes most challenging stage of fire - standing, said Garcia.

"In team matches, rapid fire is easy," said

Garcia. "The team coach watches the round's vapor trail and calls out whether or not the round is hit- ting the target's cen- ter."

Next, the most demanding stage of fire is the 500-yard line. All the shooter has to do is shoot and hold elevation, while the coach has the ardu- ous task of accurately calling the wind, said Garcia.

matches provides the commands tangible evidence to support the shooting program," Garcia added. "As a range officer with 15 years in the Marine Corps, I have noticed less emphasis on marksmanship from commands. Hopefully, getting commands more involved in the program can turn the tide in a positive direc- tion." The Hawaii Marine

team is peaking right now with CWO-3 Malsbury as the offi- cer-in-charge of the team. Through many hours of practice and support, his team has a good infrastructure of solid shooters. Ultimately these Marines can go back to their units and pass on this knowledge to Marines who are try- ing to qualify, Garcia said.

Mark Youdell, Regimental Aid Station, MCB Hawaii, cooks dinner for his family at one of the many campsites.

Relaxation is just a Sgt. William Poff StoR wr'er

AIR. FORCE STATION, WATIVIANA-

0, Oahu - Ironwood trees shade a campsite's pine nee- dle-covered ground. Tents are pitched and a permeating smell of bacon and eggs cooking over a small camp stove fills your nos- trils. Your growling stomach quickens your work, and your mind starts to fantasize about eating breakfast. Bellows not only offers camping,

but also many other activities for the discerning outdoor enthusi- ast. Military members do not need to get an Oahu camping permit, like their civilian counter- parts do.

"This is the only spot on the windward side that military members can camp without a permit," said Dawn Nuuanu, recreation aid, Bellows MWR.

"Bellows is the perfect place for families to get away on a week- end," Nuuanu said. 'The camp- sites are very close to the beach and base exchange, and there are

ew minutes away

Sgt. William Poff

Whether sitting oceanside, or playing in the water, Bellows AFS has it all.

many recreational activities offered here. "Everything from boogie boards,

bicycles and horseshoes to snor- keling equipment and one-or two- person kayaks are available."

The base also has a miniature golf course and driving range for those who like to "hit the green," Nuuanu said

"We can also arrange for larger occasions, such as birthday par- ties," said Nuuanu. 'We can cater a birthday party for $7 a

person. The money covers two hours of miniature golf and hot dogs with juice served in a cool sand pail."

Neither bad weather nor bad camping food can prevent campers fi-om enjoying a good meal at the Bellows Beach Club. The dub serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for dine-in or take-out, Nuuanu said

"Besides the strong currents in the ocean between the beach and Mokulua islands, the only other

thing to be cautious of is cen- tipedes and scorpions," said Nuuanu. 'Though not a signifi- cant threat to campers, they need to be aware the centipedes tend to favor trees and the scorpions sometimes live in sand."

"Bellows is an excellent place to camp," said Petty Officer 1st Class Mark E. Bjornson, leading petty officer, Regimental Aid Station, MCB Hawaii. 'This is probably the best beach on the island. The waves are small and the beach doesn't have rocks. Plus, there is always a comfortable breeze com- ing in from the ocean.

`This is a good place to have a weekend away," Bjornson said. "Even though your still on the island, you feel you have gotten away"

If planning for a weekend camp- ing trip it's best to make reserva- tions one month ahead of time, especially for the summer months and holiday weekends, said Nuuanu.

For more information about the camping and recreational activi- ties available at Bellows, call 259- 4121.

New facilities, events usher SMP into holiday season Renee Valdov SMP Coordinator

Ihope all of you are ready - the Single Marine Program/Recreation Center will be re-opening before you know it!

The doors to the facility will be open 8 a.m. Wednesday. The first event in our new center will be our Halloween movie night Oct. 31. The Marine Message Center and MWR K-Bay Video have donated pizza and movies for this free of charge and should be enjoyed by all, If this movie night is a success, it could become a regular event. If you have any suggestions for movies, be sure and stop by and see everything that's been happening.

The holidays are quickly approaching and the plans are in motion for events here. However, as I have said, the SMP belongs to you, the single Marines and Sailors

of MCBH and I want to be sure the events we offer are what you want. Each unit has a rep- resentative to the SMP Council and these are the people for you to get in touch with to ensure your voice is being heard. If you do not know who your representative

is, feel free to contact the SMP office and we will direct you to them. Or, if you would like to become involved in the council, just let us know. As always, your other option is to con- tact the SMP directly with your issues and concerns and we will be sure they are addressed. You can do this by calling the office at 254-7592 or by E-Mail to GS07 VAL- DOV.

There will be a Base Action Committee meet- ing tonight at the Pacific Hideaway at 7 pm. The topic this month will be MWR. If you have any questions or concerns, this is the time to bring them forward. Remember, if you do not use the opportunities presented to you they may not happen again. The SMP council members will represent the single Marines and Sailors of MCBH at the meeting, so if you

have any particular issues that you want addressed, please get them to your representa- tive or the SMP Coordinator by phone or Ian by 6 p.m. Thursday.

For more information, call 254-7592.

Classified Ad 1. Identify - begin with the item for sale, service you are

offering, or job title of the person you're looking to hire.

2. Describe - the more information you provide to the reader the better the responses. Put yourself in the buyer's place. What would you want to know?

3. Don't Exaggerate - list the features and the

condition. Make your description attractive but believable!

4. Include Price - research shows that people are more interested when they know the price. If the price is negotiable, say so.

5. Be Home ,. when you run your ad, be home or specify the hours that buyers can call. Most people won't call back.

These are tips to help you get started. For additional assistance, call us today. One of our sales representatives will be happy to help you write your ad.
