No, it was not a return of the famous "Hole in the Wall Gang," but new construction for "The Bank Machine." The walk-up teller service is scheduled to be in operation June 1. (Photo by SSgt W.S. Corps begins "houseclean, irtg"efforts by GySgt C.D. Gilbert

As the Marine Corps tAkes another turn on the quality-screw, the majority of Marines are beginning to sing, "Put another discharge in the typewriter ... and take a closer look at his S-R-13- if you find that he can't cut it . . .

make sure he hits the streets within a week . . . "

A few Marines, who have not measured up to the expected standards of character and self discipline, are finding the tune distasteful. And, ALMAR 097-83 made it clear that no water would he provided to make it more palatable or easier to swallow. It stated: " ... there are some individ- uals who are not fit to serve. They tarnish our hard-earned reputation and divert the attention of their leaders from the principal objective of establishing and maintaining unit effective- ness."

"We weren't the first to land but ie're certainly the last to leave,"

said Gunnery Sergeant Larry 'fartin, one of two Marine air iffic controllers working at inolulu International Airport.

,Since November 1981, Martin and Staff Sergeant Steve Swanson have been helping to fill he void caused by the 'ofessional Air Traffic Control 'ganization strike in August of

Lat year. Five Navy air traffic ontrollers arrived there three

nonths before the Marines but have since left. Martin and Swanson will return to their positions with Station Operations and Maintenance Squadron in June.

"It's been a real experience," ;aid Swanson, a Marine air traffic .on troller for nearly 11 years.

The two Marines were selected by SOMS to assist during the critical period following the historic strike. Forty-four of the 48 air traffic controllers working at Honolulu International walked out on their jobs durng the strike. Military air traffic controllers :tore called in to help for periods of

ap to a year, however, the contract on Martin and Swanson was extended to June 30, due to the critical shortage still experienced at the Honolulu airport.

"I'm looking forward to going back to Kaneohe," said Martin, a Marine air traffic controller for 11 years. "But it's going to be hard to readjust. Going from here ,Honolulu) to there is going to be almost boring," he continued. 'Working in a place like this is

what air traffic controlling is all about."

Martin and Swanson, along with 28 civilian air traffic controllers, are responsible for more than 1,000 take-offs and landings at Honolulu Interna- tional every day. The commercial, military and priVate airplanes use four runways there; compared to only one runway at the air station.

"We were skeptical at first about the quality and caliber of the air traffic controllers we would be getting from the military," said Honolulu International's assistant air traffic manager, John Olsen. "But I believe we received the cream of the crop with Larry and Steve. They have established themselves as real professionals."

When the military air traffic controllers arrived to replace the striking controllers, there was some concern about crossing the picket lines. But according to Martin and Swanson, they had very little trouble. "There was no animosity from the other air traffic controllers," said Swanson. "We've had a really good rapport since day one," added Martin.

Having worked with only military aircraft since enlisting in the Marine Corps, both Marines found working at one of the busiest airports in the country quite a challenge. "This is a difficult airport to work," said Martin. Swanson added, "There's a big mix of commerical, military and private aircraft here and it's hard to thread the slower moving traffic in with the faster jets."

USS Bolster says Aloha PEARL HARBOR - An institution among

Pearl Harbor-based ships will leave behind a little more than its wake as it sails from Hawaii tomorrow to join the Naval Reserve Fleet in Long Beach, Calif.

The salvage ship USS Bolster (ARS-38) :arries the distinction of being homeported in .lawaii longer than any other Pearl Harbor ship and will leave a proud mark on the islands after its 36 years of faithful service.

Commissioned in May 1945, the Bolster served in Japanese and Philippine waters before making Pearl Harbor its permanent bomeport in September 1947.

During the many years at Pearl Harbor, the Bolster participated in the Korean War and Vietnam conflict, earning numerous awards and decorations for the ship's outstanding efforts.

During the ship's tenure at Pearl Harbor, the Bolster has provided the Pacific Fleet with rescue, salvage and towing services worthy of the ship's name which means `hold up and maintain.'

Crime doesn't Pay

L

"It was really scary at first," said Martin. "When I came here I thought to myself, can I really do this? But there's a great satisfaction knowing that I can."

While serving at the civilian airport the military air traffic controllers were provided with as many benefits as possible, according to Olson, including time off and leave. In addition, several times a year, they were offered the opportunity to ride in the cockpit of commercial airlines. These flight familiariations allowed the controllers to observe pilot techniques and gain a better understanding of both the pilots' and the air traffic controllers' jobs.

It is not always easy for Marines to work exclusively with civilians and still maintain their identity as Marines. Martin and Swanson continued to wear their uniforms while storking with the civilians at the airport. "You know, for being away from the Marine Corps for so long, we have still maintained our Marine Corps image," said Martin with obvious pride.

"I was excited about coming here and I was glad that I was one of the few picked to represent the Marine Corps," said Swanson, "but I'm glad to be going'back to Kaneohe."

After more than a year and a half, the two Marines will leave behind the civilian 747s and DC- 10s and return to the air station to control the take-offs and landings of Marine Corps helicopters and fighter/attack aircraft.

The ALMAR is designed to rid the Corps of substandard performers by placing a special one-time emphasis on existing policies. It is directed primarily toward those with less than six years of service and more than 60 days at their present unit.

It calls on commanders to screen the records of all Marines in that category "to identify those whose records 'reveal substandard performance" and process them for discharge. "Particularly close attention should be given to incidents of disrespect for military or civil authority, disobedience of orders and assault," the ALMAR states.

"Additionally, repeated offenses of any nature should be weighed heavily in determining whether or not to permit the individual to continue as a Marine."

Poor performers, however, aren't being railroaded out of the Corps. The basis for discharge

requires specific counseling for Marines before initiation of discharge proceedings. Counsel- ing must be documented in the individual's service record book and includes the following: written notification of deficien- cies; specific recommendations for corrective actions, including assistance available; explanation of the consequences of the Marine's failure to take corrective action; and reasonable oppor- tunity to take recommended corrective action. Once counseled, individuals who fail to demon- strate improvement after 30 days will be processed for separation.

Although the ALMAR is directed primarily at those with less than six years service, no stone will be left unturned during the Corps' present "house cleaning" efforts, according to First Lieutenant Mark Burger, Joint Career Planning Officer here.

"The Corps is cleaning house

AT THE CONTROLS - Staff Sergeant Steve Swanson, and Gunnery Sergeant Larry Martin work the controls at the air traffic control tower, Honolulu International Airport. The Marines began working at the airport following the august 1981 Professional Air Traffic Control Organization strike.

from bottom to top," Burger said, "from private to high ranking officers. It used to be that we had to beg, borrow or steal for Marines, but now people are heating down the door."

And Chief of Staff for Recruiting, Colonel Earl Piper is more optimistic about the recruitment of the brightest of America's young. "We are anticipating that as of Sept. 30, we will have more than 90 percent high school graduates," he said.

Today's recruits ,are fast learners according to the Commandant.; "The average GT for a 74-man platoon is 112," General Barrow said during his visit here. "When they come to you, what are you going to do with them?" he challenged.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Robert H. Barrow, had an answer. "Don't reenlist the people who can't handle it."

"We need smart people in the infantry, too," he said. "Dummies can get you killed."

Admin school opens tomorrow

An administrative school is scheduled to open here tomorrow. it will be located in the Administrative Assistance Unit of building 224.

All brigade, station and Camp Smith personnel currently filling an administrative billet and who are sergeants and below are eligible to attend.

"There is a lot of personnel turnover in the units, and -because of that the continuity of knowledge is sometimes lost," said Staff Sergeant Will Compton, AAU's unit diary inspector. "By having a formal school we hope to bring the administrative sections to a more efficient level."

Two courses will initially be offered at the school, according to Master Sergeant Anthony Kanzic, AAU noncommissioned officer-in- charge.

A One Thousand Files and Directive course with eight subcourses and a visual Audit Course will be offered. The courses will be held four hours a week for three weeks.

"The Files and Directives Course was organized because, as unit administrative inspectors, we find wide discrepancies in files, and although we see that it's corrected, we often find the same errors when we inspect again," said Kanzic. "We felt that it would be beneficial to the personnel in administrative billets to attend a formal course."

The school has been on the drawing board for a few months. "A lesson plan was first organized by the AAU staff and submitted to Fleet Marine Force Pacific for approval. After approval was received, a class schedule was arranged and everything was set for the school to open," said Compton.

AAU presently has a list of people to attend the school. Hut because lass size is limited to 12, not everyone will be able to attend the first session, Kenzie said.

"Although the school is primarily fur sergeants and below, if staff noncommissioned officers and officers display interest, a course could he organized for them, said Kanzic.

For more information contact the AAU offie,! at 257-2844 or 2538.

Crime Prevention Week designated aboard air station Cpl Lorraine Copeland

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." An old cliche? Yes, but it's a philosophy worth thinking about during Crime Prevention Week here, according to Sergeant David Watson of the Provost Marshal's Office.

May 16-20 has been designated as Crime Prevention Week aboard the air station by Colonel C.D. Robinson, station commanding officer.

"The week is basically to make the community aware of steps they can take to avoid becoming a victime of crime, said Watson.

The Crime Prevention Section of PMO is encouraging everyone to lock up their valuables, report

Larceny can be prevented by removing the opportunity for a

would-be thief, according to Watson.

"Keep an honest person honest by marking your valuables and maintaining a list describing them. Include serial numbers, model numbers and any other distinguishing characteristics," said WAtson.

To help with the task, engraving equipment is available through- out the year at PMO.

During Crime Prevention Week, military police will he at designated areas throughout the air station to mark valuables. This is in conjunction with the Operation Identification Pro- gram, which encourages residents to bring mobile toys, bicycles and mopeds to be marked and registered by PMO.

Also during the week, PMO is sponsoring a Law Enforcement

Explorer Program which is designed to provide law enforcement-minded teenagers with a background in their chosen field through hands-on education.

In addition, the "youth and adult ride along" program, aimed at familiarizing the community with law enforcement procedures through active participation with the military police, is accepting interested people, according to PMO. Call PMO for an appointment or information.

"Each year during Crime Prevention Week, we learn a little more about how to attack the problems of crime," Watson said. "This is accomplished mainly through the input of residents and exchanging ideas and informa- tion."

Statistics compiled by PMO for the first three months of 1983 indicate an 11 percent decrease in

reported properly crimes compared with t lie same.period in 1982.

Further statistics show that 68 percent of reported thefts involved property that was unlocked. Of the total number of reported thefts, 30 percent occurred in the barracks areas, accordin gto PMO.

"Crimes have shown a continued downward trend reflective of the community's awareness and involvement. We should be proud of this trend, but we can't become complacent," said WAtson.

During Crime Prevention Week and throughout the remainder of the year, the public is encouraged to call PMO's Crime Prevention Section at 257-2103 or 2104, to set up an appointment for home security inspections and to obtain more information on crime prevention.

STARTS FRIDAY! 70MMOD I DOLBY STEREO'

TM

by Sgt Inez J. Stoner

4t.

I :1

It's been 75 years since the Navy Nurse Corps was established with only 20 nurses. Today, more than 2,500 trained professionals grace the ranks of the Navy Nurse Corps, celebrating its 75th anniversary Friday.

Flying the most lethal weapon ever made... The Blue Thunder Special.

At his fingertips, an infrared camera that can see right through your bedroom walls.

A microphone that can record your most intimate conversations.

And a 20mm electric cannon with six barrels that can turn your neighborhood into a raging inferno.

But he's not headed for a war-torn country.

He'll be cruising the skies of America.

And only one man can stop him from using it on you.

There are currently 14 Navy nurses stationed in Hawaii, four of them working at the Kaneohe Branch Clinic. They are Lieutenant Commanders Carolyn Warren, Nancy Means, Sandra Waskowski and Lieutenant William Aiken.

Originally called the "Sacred Twenty;" the Navy nurses have seen action near the battlefields of both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. They have served on the high seas and in the Navy hospitals around the world.

In 1965, four Navy nurses received the Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam. They were the first servicewomen to receive the medal, awarded for wounds received in combat. The four nurses were injured when terrorist bombs hit the Naval Hospital in Saigon where they were working at the time.

It was not the first time that

Navy nurses suffered the hardships of war. During World War II, Navy nurses captured in the South Pacific spent 37 months in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps and survived in spite of starvation and disease.

In 1965, in an act as revolutionary as the first female nurses joining the Navy ranks, five males joined the Navy Nurse Corps. Today, male nurses make up 25 percent of the nurse corps strength.

As for the future of the Navy Nurse Corps, according to LtCdr Means, nurse in charge of the Pediatric Clinic here, that depends a lot on the people in charge. "I think in the future, we'll see at least male nurses on the ships and possibly females, too," said Means. "I think it's great. If I wasn't married, I'd be one of the first to go." Means, who joined the Navy Nurse Corps at the suggestion of a friend, has served 11 years in the nurse corps and plans to make it her career.

The first woman in the Navy to be promoted to flag rank was Rear Adm. Alene Duerk, director of the Navy Nurse Corps. Rear Adm. Francis Shea is the present director, but will be relieved soon by recently selected Commodore Mary Nielubowicz.

American Indian Day

proclaimed for Friday May 13 has been designated by President Reagan as American

Indian Day. "The story of the Indian of America is a record of endurance, of survival, of adaptation and creativity in the face of overwhelming obstacles. It is a record of enormous contributions to' this country, to its art and culture, its strength and spirit, its sense: of history and its sense of purpose," stated the President. Of the Indians who entered the service, about 30 percent chose to join the: Marine Corps, according to Tom Gamboa a former Marine and the, organizer of the Indian Marine Reunion held recently at Del Mar, Calif. One of the curious footnotes of World War II was the success, of Navajo Marine "code talkers" who baffled Japanese monitors bi-r,

relaying battle plans using their native language.

in the Tug of War contest. Traditional events and skill- sharpening contests gave regimental leathernecks an action- packed day Friday.

Company G, 2d Battalion wins Friday field meet Photos by Cpl Pat Lewandowski

Competition was fierce as elements of the 3d Marine Regiment met at Platt Field for a regimental field meet, Friday.

Events such as the Combat Stamina Run, Disabled Vehicle Relay and Grenade Throwing Competition pitted unit against

unit for the bragging rights of being the best company or battery in 3d Marines.

When the day ended and th,e smoke cleared, Company G, 24 Battalion emerged as the victors. Company F, 2d Battalion, finished a close second, but wde unable to out-last the Devil-Dogs of "Golf' Company.

000-RAH - The Obstacle Course proves a grueling challenge to the balance, coordination and endurance

of the Marines from Battery K, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines.

UP AND OVER - Marines of Battery K, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines watch intently as

fellow "cannon-cockers" attempt to clear the high bar on the Obstacle Course.

PULL PIN AND THROW -A gas-masked Marine of Company G displays his grenade throwing form during competition at the 3d Marines' field meet.

The target for the grenades was a four foot wide pit, 25 yards from the throwing point. Such events fine-tune a Marine's combat skills.

FREE FOR ALL - What looks like pandemoniuin is actually the controlled chaos of the Bull-In- The-Ring event. Ma- rines from Company, G and Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, try to expel each other from a circle marked on the ground. The company with the last man remaining is the winner.

Club chef carves cool sculptures by Cp1 Peggy Young

The stately swan slowly emerged from the ice that held it captive and lifted its proud head to the sky.

The icy beauty was created by the experienced ice carving hands of Eddie Acoba, the senior chef at the enlisted club here.

Acoha started carving when he was a small boy . .. not on ice, but on wood.

"It seemed natural for me to switch from carving wood to carving ice when I started cooking," said Acoha. "Using ice statues is one of the best ways to compliment a well set-up buffet."

The ice statues he carves begin as a 300 pound block of ice. The tools used to carve the ice are almost identical to wood carving tools.

C C

. . . together we can create anything."

"The first thing I do before I

begin carving," said Acoba, "is to sketch the object I want to sculpt. Then I scrape a rough outline into the ice before I begin carving."

According to Acoha the temperature of ice used for sculpting is important.

"If the ice is too cold, it will shatter when you begin chipping it. If the ice is too warm, it will get cracks all the way through it."

Acoha starts his carving with a tool that looks like a fork with sharp edges. He chips away the ice until he gets a basic outline of his object. A large chisel is then used to smooth the lines and define the details. Various other tools are used for more intricate work.

Acoha sculpts ice for most ofthe special occasions on the air station. A very intricate reproduction of the Marine Corps emblem was carved when the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps visited the air station.

Acoha also carves a traditional heart and connecting hearts for the Sweethearts' Dance on Valentine's Day. These hearts are carved out of red ice.

-"We can buy ice in practically any color of the rainbow," said Staff Sergeant Keith Ward, Enlisted Club Manager.

"I think Eddie is one of the most talented ice sculptors I've ever met," continued Ward. "He has really made this club an attractive place to visit."

Acoba does not like to take credit for his talented work.

"I couldn't do very much if it wasn't for the people I work with," Acoha said. "We all fit together like a team, and that's how we do our best work. We might all be best at making one thing, but together we can create anything."

Acoba's carving talents are not just limited to wood and ice, he is also a creative vegetable and fruit carver.

"Eddie has carved a bird from a cantaloupe and can turn vegetables into just about any design or object you can imagine. All the buffets he sets up are spectacular," Ward said.

Though the ice sculptures that Acoha creates will only last a short time before melting, their beauty will last in the memory of the people that see them.

Protein vital for baby's growth by Carol Siepel, Home Economist

Protein is needed by all people for growth, repairing and replacing cells, making enzymes and antibodies, and maintaining normal body functions such as water balance. Protein is also used for energy production if carbohydrates and fats are not available, Protein eaten in excess of the body's needs will he converted into fat and stored for future energy use.

A pregnant woman needs additional protein for both herself and her unborn baby.

Protein is needed by the mother for the normal growth of' her uterus (womb), breasts, placenta (afterbirth), and for making additional blood cells. The mother's blood volume increases by 50 percent during pregnancy, so many new blood cells must he made. All of the new tissues made by the mother during pregnancy are basically built of protein,

and therefore a supply of protein from the'd let is needed to build these tissues.

Protein is needed by the baby for his/her growth. Each cell in the baby's body contains protein, and therefore a supply of protein must he readily available if the baby is to continue his/her growth throughout the nine months of pregnancy.

In general, good food sources of protein are a]] foods from animal sources, as well as foods made from dry peas and beans.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein for women older than 19 years of age is 44 grams per day. Pregnant women are recom- mended to eat an additional 30 grams, or a total of 74 grams a day. Many women already eat this much protein in their regular diet and would not need any additional protein to meet their increased needs, or the baby's while they are pregnant.

ston and Private First Class Kevin Dressel, knocked down trees and cleared brush while mechanic PFC Ria Foshay kept the equipment running.

Foshay was kept busy replacing worn and broken parts, and when the parts or the tools weren't available - jurry-rigging. In one instance, Foshay used a rope and steel wire to keep the bulldozer's radiator guard in place after the welds on the hinges had snapped.

According to Al Rogers, senior district executive for the Boy Scouts, the old range was demolished by Hurricane Iwa in November. The camp had planned to enlarge its rifle range, but it was at a location unsuitable for expansion. A new area was chosen on the 65-acre camp for the project, enabling an archery range to be built next to the rifle range.

To start, the Marines had to widen the access road to bring in their heavy equipment. One tree was so big that the dozer couldn't lift it.

After a week of enduring broken machinery, rain which left up to a foot of mud in areas and 'back to basics' living, Schnorrenberg predicted the project would be completed three days earlier than anticipated.

"We've been here since Thursday (April 21) and it has rained every day," said Schnorrenberg. "Other than that and the equipment breaking down, everything here is great."

, Marines mourn for ANZAC dead Story and photo

by SSgt Moses Reynolds

NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY OF THE PACIFIC (PUNCHBOWL) - ANZAC and Pouwaina are two different words

It to two different peoples. But, to the :300 who attended the wreath- laying ceremony at Punchbowl cemetery April 25, these words have special meaning.

The Australians and New Zealanders recognize ANZAC as an acronym for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC is also a day of remembrance in their homelands fOr their war dead. The Hawaiians

1 named this burial place the 'hill of sacrifice', or Pouwaina.

. It is fitting that these two words Wet here each year. The consul generals of

Australia and New Zealand, j4ined by representatives of other cDuntries, military, state and community leaders, gathered at the National Memorial to commemorate the anniversary of the 1915 landing on the Gallipoli peninsula by the Australian and blew Zealand Army Corps.

The landing was an attempt to 1 capture Istanbul, then called

qonstantinople, from the Turks p during World War I. The attempt

fiiled. In military terms, it was a Major defeat.

In Australia and New Zealand, the observance takes place in the form of a dawn service at war memorials followed by a march of veterans. Since 1973, Australians and New Zealanders in Hawaii have observed ANZAC Day at this cemetery. However, this year, the ceremony was a bit different. More than 150 leathernecks of the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific participated in the colorful, yet solemn ceremony.

The Marines represented the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific Honor Platoon, Color Guards, Saluting Battery and Band. The wreath orderlies were from Marine Barracks, Hawaii.

The clean-shaven leathernecks standing behind their rifles, cannons, musical instruments and wreaths were not yet born when ANZAC troops attempted to advance against the hail of machine-gun fire on Gallipoli.

One four-man color guard carried the Australian and New Zealand flags. "I felt honored in being a part of this ceremony," said 22-year-old Corporal Thomas D. Rohr of Tampa, Fla. "Even though members of the Australian and New Zealand forces were not here, I felt a sense of camaraderie during the ceremony." Rohr

Dentists Story and photo

by Sgt Greg Berry

Twelve sailors compared last year's two week visit to the desert at Twentynine Palms, Calif. to this year's vacation in paradise.

Their conclusion: there's no comparison.

The vacation these sailors were enjoying wasn't actually a vacation, but compared to the weather they left behind on the mainland, it seemed that way. The 12-member reserve dental detachment arrived here April 16 from Atlanta, where spring was battling winter for a foothold.

Dentists and technicians, members of the 24th ,. Dental Company, 4th Force Service Support Group, spent their annual training here preparing 1st

Reservists conduct training; ready Marines for deployment

Marine Brigade leathernecks for an upcoming deployment. "We support Marine exercises each year," explained Senior Chief Petty Officer Billy Darling. Last year they supported a combined arms exercise in the California desert. "Everybody loves it here," he said about the change in locale.

The five dental teams performed about 3,500 procedures in nine working days - an average of 78 per day for each team. Procedures, such as exams, cleaning, fillings, and (of course) shots, turned about 375 leathernecks into Class I dental patients.

The final tally showed 583 teeth filled.

Navy Captain Hal Raper, the company's commanding officer, praised the 21st Dental Company for their support during the reservists' 15-day stay, and

OPEN WIDE - Dental Technician First Class Kathie Whiting :and Commander James Wollwend practice their trade.

ANZAC Con't from Page A-9 carried the Australian flag.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant Barry D. Laubsxher, of Williamsport, Pa.. was the commander of troops for the ceremony. "This was a fantastic opportunity for Marines the learn of the Gallipoli campaign," said the 38-year-old former drill instructor. -

According to Counsel General William Fisher of the Australian Consul in Hawaii, the ANZAC landing anniversary is not a glorification of victory or war. "We are here to commemorate the valor and sacrifice of those who died in all wars."

The ANZAC landing was made at dawn April 25, 1915. In the preceeding two months that had elapsed since the first naval bombardment, the Turks, well

warned, had vastly improved their defenses and positions. They increased their force to five divisions and was placed under the leadership of General Liman von Sanders, a German general.

The ANZAC casualties at Gallipoli were 33,532 killed, 78,518 wounded and more than 7,500 missing in action. The name ANZAC has been prepetuated by setting aside a day each April as a Day of Remembrance.

When American forces were in Australia during WWII, it was suggested that the word "ANZAC" might also mean Australian, New Zealand and American Comrades. On ANZAC Day 1942, in Melbourne, General Douglas McArthur placed a wreath bearing the inscription, "To the ANZAC forces from their American comrades-in-arms of yesterday, today and tomorrow."

appreciation went both ways. The Georgia reservists lightened the overall load on the dentists here, and one of their technicians lent a hand with the local bridge work.

Dental Technician Second Class Hughie Black, a prostho- dontic lab technician, spent several days making bridges and plates, filling in for a dental technician who was on emergency leave.

In civilian life, Black does a different type of building - he owns a remodeling firm.

DT-1 Kathie Whiting works as a dental hygienist in a Veterans Administration hospital in Florida, and thoroughly enjoyed the change in pace. . .of her customers. "It:s refreshing to watch a patient jump into a chair

all prepared for an examination,- she said. Her patients at the VA aren't nearly as enthusiastic.

"The Marines here are very aware of exercise and nutrition," Whiting said. "They want to know what's going on with their teeth." Unfortunately, many of them don't take advantage of the tropical fruit here, she said, "It's like they're washing their teeth in a sugar bath." Sugar-laced coffee and sodas are the two bigest culprits in the battle of tooth decay, she added.

The reservists ended their stay here Saturday, leaving the Marines better off in their fight against cavities, and arrived home to find sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s. Spring was winning its battle too.

B SPORTS HAWAII MARINE

Marines lose at Interservice Volleyball by Cpl Christopher Wood

Spirit contributes to victory. But not even mountains of motivation could help the Marines in the 1983 Interservice Volleyball Championships, conducted May 1-6 at Fort Shafter gymnasium.

Both women's and men's teams participated in the competition, with play alternating nightly. The Air Force captured first, while the two Marine teams emerged with win-loss records of 1 and 5, each point resulting from a best of three series. Motivation was there for the Marines, but fate wasn't . . .

WOMEN'S PLAY First-game jitters and butterflies spelled

doom for the women's team, as they initiated tournament play, May 1. Suffering humiliating defeats of 15-5 and 15-0 at the hands of the

Navy, the lady leathernecks couldn't get it together in the first round. "They had first- game jitters," said First Lieutenant Bruce Knippel, women's coach. "They were so scared that they couldn't think about volleyball. For most of them, this is the first time that they've been this high in competition."

"We had the talent but didn't show it," admitted Sergeant Julie Boozer, team captain. "We weren't clicking. When we click, we play better than any of these teams," she said. "Everything that's needed is there. It just needs to be put into operation."

Boozer acknowledges that the team was nervous but says that it's a poor excuse. "You can't use that as an excuse when the other team was in their first game, too," she said.

Second series play against the Air Force went slightly better, with the Marines managing

eight points in the first game and nine in the second.

"We didn't stick with our basic strategy," Knippel said. "We changed it as we went along, but the girls just couldn't get it together."

As female play resumed May 3, the Marines lost two games to the Navy, both by 15-6. Later play against the Army gave the Marines their only series victory, with scores of 15-13 and 15-6.

Revenge was the name of the game, May 5, as the Army defeated the Marines 15-11 and 15-7. The Air Force got their licks in too, handing the leathernecks 15-1 and 15-4 defeats. The lady leathernecks finished the tournament with a record of 1 and 5.

While Boozer obviously would have liked the tournament to end differently, satisfaction was evident. "I'm satisfied with the effort that we put into it," she commented. "It wasn't like we didn't try.

"I have a lot of respect for.the other girls on the team," she added. "They give more for the Corps than the Corps asks of them. They're true Marines."

Part of being a Marine is seeking self - improvement, which is what the women's team has done over the past several years. "The Marines came in this tournament with the strongest women's team I've ever seen," said Sgt Nancy Seidl, an interservice player for three years. "This was. an exceptional team, compared. to the caliber it's been in the past years."

Corporal June Palomo, Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron-24, agrees. "This is my

second year on the team, and I think it's the best team we've had," she said. "We're as good or better than they are."

MEN'S PLAY Men's play commenced May 2, with the

Marines losing to the Navy, 15-12 and 15-10 and to the Air Force 15-6 and 15-9. "We had to get the momentum going," said Chief Warrant Officer- 4 Larry Lariosa, coach for the men's team. "All we had to do was jell and work together."

Inconsistency was characteristic May 4. Although the Marines lost the first game of the series to the Army, 15-4, they bounced back and took the second game 15-10. But the momentum was lost. Army took the tie-breaker, 15-7, leaving the Marines still without a match win.

"We made a lot of mental errors and were left playing catch-up ball," Lariosa said. "We can't make any excuses for the team. The experience is there."

Later play against the Navy saw the Marines explode in all their glory. In two thrilling games, the leathernecks defeated the sailors 16- 14 and 17-15.

But ambition's light was doused on the Marines, Friday, when the Air Force defeated them 15-5 and 15-9. Later, the soldiers handed the leathernecks their final series loss, heating them 15-7 and 16-14.

"We gave it our utmost effort," Lariosa said. "I'm very proud of this team. We held our

character and composure on the court, and we represented the Marine Corps in a professional manner."

According to the Marine of 29 years, interservice sports are excellent for drawing out service pride. "We had a lot of pride in ourselves and in the Marine Corps," he said. "Interservice sports brings out the pride of each branch of the service. All in all, it's been a rewarding experience."

'LIBERTY HOUSE

Major J.B. Egan, Marine Corps Sports Officer, commended both Marine teams for their efforts. "They reflect great credit upon themselves and the Marine Corps," he said. "Anyone of these Marines would be a credit to any unit."

That statement was supported throughout the championships, as the teams exemplified what it means to hold the title "Marine." As members of Fort Shafter's Army Chorus marked the tournament's start with renditions of each service's theme song, the audience remained in respectful silence. But as the Marine hymn began, every leatherneck in the gymnasium stood at attention and sang along.

That love of Corps was carried over into tournament action, as throats went hoarse with shouts of "MARINE CORPS!!! MARINE CORPS!!! MARINE CORPS!!!"

Dependent softball season off to a running start

"It's for dependent women to have a little recreation," said Mindy Long, outfielder for the Retreads. "We can get out and do something

The 1983 women's dependent softball season besides the normal hum-drum things and take is off and running. "This season the league has out all of our aggressions."

; seven teams vice the six we had last season and the competition is great," said Dan Long, commissioner of the women's dependent league.

by SSgt W.S. Saunders

The league began in 1978 and with the exception of the 1981 seasop, the interest in the

; league is on the rise. The league was estblished to give women a means of having fun, physical

. activity and an opportunity to experience a ; team sport, said Long.

"I like to play softball and I'm glad we have a ; league," said Lorine Parris, outfielder for Good

Quality. "The league gives women something to do and builds morale."

4

"I joined the league to meet people," said Jean Mausser, outfielder for Bad Company. "I enjoy the playing, competition, and the fun. It keeps everyone busy to a certain point. It's a good learning experience as far as comraderie among a group of women. Sometimes, I feel sorry for the coaches because they devote all their time to mold a group of women, from all walks of life, into a team. That's a job in itself." 19," said Long.

"I'd really like to see more women come out for the next season which starts in mid-July. We'd like to have at least eight teams with 13-15 players. The present season will conclude June

No diet pills, no injections Professionally supervised No starvation or food decisions Wide choice of Nutri/System meals No constant calorie-counting, mistake-proof food plan Nutri/System guarantee: Follow the Nutri/System Program and lose weight quickly, often up to a pound a day. HAWAII MARINE CIRCULATION

POLICY Each week, the HAWAII MARINE is

delivered to all homes and apartments. Your carrier delivers the HAWAII MARINE and will call on you every few weeks.

If delivery service is satisfactory, and you enjoy the HAWAII MARINE, your voluntary payment will be a

reward to our young businessman for a job well done. It's an incentive to work hard, and it's a way of letting our circulation department know which boys and girls are giving the best service.

The young carrier pictured above is a local businessman . . . a HAWAII MARINE carrier. Most likely, this is his first business venture, and it is an important educational experience. As one of his customers, you can make his route a way to genuine personal achievement and growth.

If you have any complaint about your HAWAII MARINE or the delivery service, please call 247-8755.

CARRIER APPLICATION

Marines down Flyers Story and photo

by Cpl Christopher Wood It looked easy, Saturday, as the

Hawaii Marines soccer team kicked past the Air Force Flyers, 3 to 1, at station training field.

"I wouldn't say we played superbly, but we played OK," said Captain Johnny Charles, leatherneck coach.

Lance Corporal Tony Yepes put the Marines on the board first, booting one past the goalee. "I put myself forward and took that extra step," Yepes said. "It's all a matter of running in front of the ball."

Later, Sergeant Jose Garcia dribbled one past the Flyers, giving the Marines a 2 to 0 lead at the half.

FLEET FEET -A Hawaii Marines player moves the ball down field during play against the Air Force, Saturday.

A penalty kick by Airman First Class Alberto Saravia got rid of the Flyers' goose egg after LCpI John Vargas, Marine goalee, tripped an Air Force player.

New blood started flowing towards the end of the game, when LCpI Frank Arzillo, a new addition to the team, got his long - sought goal.

"It was a cheap goal," Arzillo said. "But I had worked hard for it."

Nonetheless, most of the Hawaii Marines didn't have to overwork themselves, as they battled a less than sluggish Air Force.

"They're playing better thAn they used to," Charles said. "Last time, we beat them 5 to O."

Since the next deployment will cause Charles to lose Yepes and Private First Class Raul Toledo, two of his star players, new recruits are being sought. Interested players should contact Charles at 477-6352 as soon as possible, since time is important.

"It takes a long time to mature a soccer team," the captain said, "especially when only 2 of 18 players are native-born Ameri- cans."

The Hawaii Marines' next game is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Brigham Young University.

Volksmarching The 50th State Wanderers Volksmarch Club will sponsor the "Diamond Head

Walk" Volksmarch May 28 from 7 a.m. to noon. This will be a 10 and 20 Kilometer march and a 42 Kilometer marathon through

Honolulu starting at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel in Waikiki. Bronze and Silver medals and a patch for the marathon will be awarded to

registered participants who complete the walk. Pre-registrants (now through May 23 - $4 fee) are given priority for the award. For those who register after May 23, the cost will be $5 and medals and patches will be mailed to them at no extra cost.

For additional information, phone 423-1416 or 625-0652. The term "Volksmarching" literally means "people's march" or "sport of the

people." Volksmarches are organized hikes covering distances of ten and twenty kilometers (6 and 12 miles).

Participants set their own pace (walking, jogging, or running) and every finisher is a winner. Colorful medals are provided to all who negotiate the route and obtain required stamps on their Volksmarch start cards.
