Starting from last September, XCHANGE has collaborated with various artists and art groups to launch its first module — “A Page A Wish”, with an aim to encourage the public to get back to basics through exploring the relationship with food. Our second module, “Fair Food”, will probe into food justice with the community through a series of public participation activities. Together we learn to eat right, pick wisely, and share joy.

XCHANGE originates from life, but also integrates with our surroundings. To impart different solving skills to the community, we have specially designed a series of programmes that helps repair and enrich our lives with our own hands. Soupday Tuesday (Every Tuesday)

Homemade soup can invigorate our bodies and minds, and it delivers the message of care and comfort without words. We partner with our host Lili Ho to make a variety of nutritious soups with simple ingredients, which fills the people around us with love and devotion. Workout Wednesday (Every Wednesday)

We will demonstrate at-home workout with “Spartant”, from which we can learn stimulating and stretching muscle groups. By being active and focused on muscle training, we communicate with our own body and retrace our instincts and vitality. In-season Thursday (Every Thursday)

Devoted to promoting urban planning, Oi! encourages green eating lifestyle and food upcycling in the community. We partner with our farmer to introduce the tips and tricks of planting as well as cooking of seasonal vegetables, revealing their values and nutrition. Green eating is just a simple step to life. medialogue aims to spark a dialogue between art and media technology, to explore the potential and capability for applying technology in the creation of art, and to consider and extend the boundaries of contemporary art practices. Through joining hands with different artists, it is hoped to stimulate a discussion about those practices by asking questions — about ideologies in media and art in a constantly changing sociocultural environment, about how media relates to contemporary art practices and how they cultivate aesthetic values and manifest cultural content, about the possibilities and capacity of media art, and about what kind of impact media will have on art practices of today and future. Artist Jes Fan will create a work of media art at vA!

Xenophoria Xenophoria is a new single channel video. Referencing the aesthetics of both microscopic imagery and ASMR videos, the work depicts such actions as dissecting squids and bursting their ink sacs, tracing the discolored tumours within Lam Qua’s medical paintings, harvesting funghi, and locating bodily moles, in an absurdist investigation of the substance of racial othering.

What if printmaking is not considered as a kind of painting but a way of thinking? What kind of inspiration will my work of art take? May imprint be an anticipation, and traces the outcome of the process. What do they mean to the creative journey? It may be the most effective way to trace the spiritual trajectory of artists.

Residence and Exhibition Programme @ Suomenlinna

The Art Promotion Office joins hands with the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP) to bring five outstanding Hong Kong artists to Finland, ranked as the happiest country in the world, for art creation. Their works will be staged at Suomenlinna this summer.

Situated on a group of islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique maritime nature and fortress architecture. No matter how far the distance is between Hong Kong and Suomenlinna, we share the common geographical characteristic that both of us are islands in the globe under the same sky sharing the same sea. Responding to the theme “The Same Sea” of the Helsinki Biennial, Dr. Yeewan Koon is invited as the guest curator for the exhibition “So long, thanks for all the fish!”. Architects Betty Ng, Juan Minguez and Eugene Tse will transform the site of Finland’s first military airplane factory in 1920s into an exhibition space, showcasing multimedia works and installations by Luke Ching, Christopher K. Ho, Lam Tung-pang, Cédric Maridet and Angela Su in August and September 2020. In addition, Luke Ching will present his work created in the residence programme at Suomenlinna in the Helsinki Biennale from August 2020.

Taken from the title of the fourth book of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a world-renowned humorous science fiction series as our exhibition title, participating artists are inspired by the storyline of the novel and explore the issues of globalization, identity, authenticity and communication. For a long time, we have been driven by the established living pattern and core values. Under the grand narratives of High Modernism and significant events in history, hidden scripts such as diaries, folktales and metaphors provide alternative ways of thinking and subjective values in complexities. Perhaps these texts and scripts can arouse memories that empower people to continue to live in the new Earth.

Oku-Noto Triennale 2020“Station by the Sea” Residence and Exhibition Programme

Artist’s impression of the work

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services DepartmentOrganised by the Art Promotion OfficeSupported by the Oku-Noto Triennale Executive Committee

The Oku-Noto Triennale is set in Suzu City, the tip of the Noto Peninsula on the northern coast of Japan. This coastal area was a prosperous centre of commerce and cultural exchange during the golden age of maritime trade. The Noto Railway connecting the central to the northern Noto Peninsula exceeded 100km in its heyday. Surrounded by the sea and woods, Suzu has a rich ecosystem of satoyama and satoumi, which is listed as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage. The gift from nature nurtures its traditional industries, namely wine and pottery making, as well as its unique cultures, such as agehama-style salt making, the Kiriko giant lantern parade and hospitality rituals. This humble way of living with nature is inherited from generation to generation. Ever since the urbanisation and depopulation, Suzu has gradually become the most remote area in the Noto Peninsula dotted with abandoned railway tracks and empty platforms.

The Triennale is to use art to revitalise the “furthest edge of the world”, while the “Station by the Sea” Residence and Exhibition Programme is set in the Former Ukai Station, on which artists will explore the nature, history, culture and human relations during their stay, and embark on a quest for inner self and cultural journey through art. The call for proposals ended and was well-received with a total of 77 entries. The proposal “ ”, by the local artist Dylan Kwok, was selected by the adjudication panels from Hong Kong and Japan. The work addresses the norm that people are addicted to mobile devices to receive endless messages on the internet and social media platforms in this digital technology and social media-driven era. Human relationships seem attached, yet is more distant than before. During his stay in Suzu, the artist will mimic as a shopkeeper on the station. He will introduce a novel way of communication, which is different from the current popular ones. The audience will handwrite their genuine experiences and post the warmth and joy with their love ones.

How do we pursue peace of mind? After identifying three senior citizens, Mr Chow, Ms Lee and Ms Tong, who have made their life calm and still, Hong Kong artist collective L sub has reinterpreted some inspiring concepts from their objects like bed sheet, colour paper and lullaby, and construct their beliefs and routines into a set of practices. A series of remote workshops aiming at younger senior citizens are developed to focus on how we can spread contentment. It is hoped that parts of the workshops can be extended to both Hong Kong and Japanese communities in the form of a public campaign. Three public campaigns will be launched in June, including ‘Paper Tearing Pen-pal Therapy, ‘Fold a Banknote. Twice as Good’ and ‘1-hour Before Sleep Audio Exchange’. Everyone is welcome to participate in search for the peace of mind.

To give new art inspiration to the vibrant development of Tuen Mun, a district with long history and significant local characteristics, the Art Promotion Office has launched “Viva! River”, a public art project under the Signature Project Scheme “Revitalisation of Tuen Mun River and Surrounding Areas” featuring 6 local artist groups. Over the past year, they have made efforts in learning more about the district and initiating dialogues with community groups by visiting different places, such as schools, malls, parks and housing estates. Various kinds of collaboration have also taken place in the communities, where the public and artists exchange ideas to envision a more vital public space from the perspective of art and design. Inspired by the history and culture of Tuen Mun, as well as the connections and imaginations embraced by the residents, our participating artists have created 6 sets of artwork along the Tuen Mun River, including sculptures, urban furniture, a community weaving project and even an interactive installation with music elements. The artworks have been successively installed, and it is expected to complete by July 2020. In addition to giving the riverside a new look, we will highlight it as a new platform for innovation. We cordially invite you to embark on an artistic journey along the river, and take part in our ongoing community events — as many a little makes a mickle, we believe that your interesting ideas and stories will make a difference!

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is the largest international outdoor art festival in the world and is held once every three years in the Echigo-Tsumari region since 2000. Using art as a catalyst, the Triennale provides a platform to present projects and initiatives which aims to reveal existing assets of the region and rebuilds the relationship between human and nature through artistic creation, appreciation and participation. The Hong Kong House, a new art hub set up by the Art Promotion Office and collaborated with the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in 2018, serves as a showcase of Hong Kong art talents and a sustainable platform for arts and cultural exchanges. In the past two years, Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong (2018) and Annie Wan (2019) leveraged the Hong Kong House as a platform to stage their artworks while L sub (2020) will take visitors on a journey away from the hustle and bustle of city and being delighted in a thought-provoking experience in the Hong Kong House.

With the approach of the 8th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in 2021 and preparation for this 3-year mega art event, we are inviting local artists to submit artwork proposals from April to June 2020. Riding on the recognition and support by the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and art circle in Hong Kong, we are looking for outstanding local artists to showcase their works through this international arts platform and to bring exceptional works to the global audiences. Museums for Equality : Diversity and Inclusion 2020

In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has been responding to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.

The theme of IMD 2020 is “Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion 2020”. The potential of museums to create meaningful experiences for peoples of all origins and backgrounds is central to their social value. As agents of change and trusted institutions, there is no time like the present for museums to demonstrate their relevance by engaging constructively in the political, social, and cultural realities of modern society.

The challenges of inclusion and diversity and the difficulty of navigating complex social issues in increasingly polarised environments, while not unique to museums and cultural institutions, are important ones, due to the high regard in which museums are held by society.

An increasing public expectation for social change has catalysed a conversation around museums’ potential for social good in the form of exhibitions, conferences, performances, education programmes, and initiatives created. However, there remains much to do to overcome conscious and subconscious power dynamics that can create disparities within museums, and between museums and their visitors.

These disparities can relate to many topics, including ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and identity, socioeconomic background, education level, physical ability, political affiliation and religious beliefs.

With the theme “Museums for Equality : Diversity and Inclusion”, International Museum Day 2020 aims at becoming a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities and personnel of museums, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.

Participating UnitsThis year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 16-17 May 2020 (Saturday and Sunday), and over those two days, visitors will be admitted free (except for special exhibitions and programmes with an admission fee) to LCSD museums, as well as most of the other participating venues, where a wide range of public programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!

的空間裝置內,參與猶如無聲的士高 (silent disco) 的身體律動體驗,從而感受公共與私人空間的微妙關係;

Wondering what will be the best way to spend your bright summer day outdoors enjoying fresh air? Join us for “Take PARK in Art II”! We have launched a series of events at outdoor venues in collaboration with KACAMA SOCIAL and various community organisations, offering a creative experience that sparks new ideas of art, green life and sharing economy.

Our upcoming summer events include the “Moving Playground : Spatial Experience Workshop”, which will transform a plaza into an experimental stage for participants to move their bodies in a special installation setting, like a silent disco, in order to explore the nuances between private and public spaces; and the “City BioBlitz”, which we will invite participants to observe, draw and make records of the birds, butterflies and flowering plants found in a park — selected drawings could even be exhibited as temporary displays in the park! For updates and online registration details, please follow our Facebook page “Seats.Together” (www.facebook.com/apo.seatstogether) and Instagram (@ apo.seatstogether), and visit our website (www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/Museum/APO/en_US/web/apo/take_park_in_art.html).
