Comments from INAP Members

The good:

• Conference was well organized.

• Strong proponent of communications. Attendees had access to mobile app to view the program,

network with other attendees and receive the latest notifications and changes to program during the event.

• CSIR conference centre facilities excellent.

• Breakfast, breaks, lunches and Banquet – Food was excellent.

• Good networking opportunities when at CSIR.

Comments from INAP Members

The not so great:• Review process of papers. Availability of information/co-Chair prior

to conference. Refered to as Glorified Annual IMWA Conference.

• Absence of industry participants and presentations by industry/regulators

• Limited “new” information (Mine Closure previous week?)

• Few case studies, lots of geochemistry

• Surprising number of fairly basic papers

• Abundance of student papers (an IMWA thing)

• Less social than other ICARDs due to the all the hotels being located some distance from the conference venue. Delegates were hesitant to walk/travel around at night between the different hotels due to safety concerns.

2018 ICARD Survey

• Overall Conference 89%• Keynote Sessions 84%

• Technical Sessions 85%

• Short Courses 85%

• Logistical/Registration 90%

• Location (Pretoria) 80%

• Shuttle Service 66%Interesting that the survey did not include such items as opening ceremony, posters, exhibit area and Taste of Africa Banquet. A final summary report is expected.

What did you like most about the ICARD 2018?

Comments from the ICARD Survey:

Networking, networking, networking. Amazing food, Gala Dinner, entertainment and science Fantastic conference, very well organized. Great talks and opportunity to share ideas and experiences Diverse topics presented from a variety of mine water related aspects Technical contents, venue and opportunity to meet others in similar field

and share ideas Great location, great host and balanced technical presentation Post-Conference Tour was fantastic - a real highlight

Nkomati Nickel Mine and Kruger National Park

And some of the negatives from survey for ICARD 2018?

Surprised by the low attendance of people from mining companies. More case studies. Make an appeal to attract more mine operators and not

only consultants and university researchers The room sizes were sometimes not proportional to the audience. Sponsorship and exhibition costs were very expensive for the exposure

returns. Mid-term excursions as in “normal“ IMWA Conferences omitted. Time for activities outside Conference very limited. 17:30 back in Hotel.

18:00 sunset. Suggest holding IMWA in a country where people can freely walk without

feeling scared all the time. For this reason, unfortunately this IMWA was not as good as all the other ones I have been to.
