A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUG FORD

I’m pleased to extend warm greetings to everyone taking part in the 11th annual SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival. One of the many things that make Ontario great is our vibrant and diverse artistic landscape. A cappella singing embraces all cultures, ages and skill levels. This festival is a chance to bring people together in celebration of the power of the human voice. I want to thank the energetic team behind this festival. This is an amazing platform for gifted singers, both amateur and professional, to showcase their talent. I’m confident the performances and workshops will inspire music lovers and re-energize our music and cultural scene. Best wishes for a successful festival.

Doug Ford Premier

Message from the Mayor It gives me great pleasure to extend greetings and a warm welcome to everyone participating in SING! The Toronto International Vocal Arts Festival. I am delighted that this festival, one of the largest a cappella festivals in the country, is once again able to offer live, in-person performances. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase talented a cappella performances and artists. Thank you to the organizers for their flexibility throughout COVID-19 in transitioning the festival to a virtual only format that gave participants a platform where they could continue to sing for an audience. Community events promote and encourage residents to connect with each other while participating in activities that contribute to community-building. I am delighted that wonderful events like yours are taking place in Toronto. On behalf of Toronto City Council, I wish everyone an enjoyable and memorable event. Please accept my best wishes for continued success. Yours truly,

John Tory Mayor of Toronto

Cordialement,

Le très hon. Justin P. J. Trudeau, C.P., député Premier ministre du Canada

May 27–June 5, 2022 Dear Friends: I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in the 2022 edition of SING! The Toronto International Vocal Arts Festival. This annual event offers a cappella singers from across Canada and around the world an opportunity to showcase their talents and to collaborate with other singers who share a passion for this artistic pursuit. They will also have a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow as musicians as they take part in a wide variety of seminars and workshops. It continues to be a challenging time for planning and hosting events. That is why I would like to commend the organizers for their hard work in putting together a festival that includes both in-person and virtual programming and for their continued commitment to promoting the enjoyment of a cappella music. I am certain that the diverse line-up of performances scheduled for the next ten days will captivate everyone in attendance. Please accept my best wishes for a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. Sincerely,

The Rt. Hon. Justin P. J. Trudeau, P.C., M.P. Prime Minister of Canada

After retiring from a 30-year run as Artistic Director of the Beaches International Jazz Festival, I received an invite from SING! to bring decades of interactions and experience to the festival as it enters a second decade. I've long been a fan of vocalese and a catalyst for bringing those in the shadows with great talent to the forefront - others in a producer's role, a good many through the recording process. Liberty Silver, Live! In Session, Sophie Milman, Shakura S'Aida Rhythm & Soul, Dust Road Blues, Stacey Kay, The Long Goodbye, Canadian Opera's Lauren Margison, Real Divas Café Society, Gavin Hope – For All We Know, John McDermott – Traditionally Yours, OKAN, Desudendo el Alma - twenty such recordings. Then there is the long list of vocalists I've performed with in concert: Emilie Claire-Barlow, Jackie Richardson, Dionne Taylor, Julian Taylor, Jay Douglas, and more...

Working as the Director of Strategy and Engagement for eight months has been exhilarating. One of the first duties was to secure a central staging arena - that we accomplished with the booking of the legendary Concert Hall at Davenport and Yonge Street. I know the history from once covering James Brown on a humid July night in 1997. The newly renovated facility has everything a festival could ask for; central seating, a spacious ground floor, a sizeable stage, and a concert hall feel. It's long been my philosophy – a festival must have a heartbeat and central hub. That we have. We have completed the vision by securing the Paradise Theatre and other satellite staging areas.

The voice has many characters in play. The crooner, the balladeer, the shouter, the rocker, the spoken word specialist, the trickster, the storyteller. The many tones, the many combinations. It's all about the voice isolated and now reciting a passage of history revisited, or the communal Sing blending harmonies and evoking patterns, places, and time.

We all love to sing! And we all admire and listen to those who have chosen the voice as a profession.

Please visit our website – singtoronto.com and take time to listen, read and choose a specific concert that matches your inspiration, or book a festival pass and attend as many events as possible.

Bill King, Director of Strategy and Engagement

2022

We love to SING! Demonstrating that the human voice has no limits, knows no constraints of genre, language or cultural background, SING! The Toronto International Vocal Arts Festival celebrates our 11th year with a return to both in-person and virtual events. This year’s theme of SINGing! Apart/Together With Diverse Voices reflects our breadth of programming and outreach. Hello everyone!

This is our first year as Artistic Directors of SING! and we hope you enjoy what we and our incredible team have put together. Our challenge has been twofold: first, to combine live and online content, as we welcome artists back to the stage while also connecting with a new global audience; second, to take new steps toward a more diverse, accessible, and inclusive experience for everyone. It's an exciting time to join the SING! family, and we're thrilled to have you along for the ride! As the world continues to make music together - and apart - we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for purchasing tickets, passes, volunteering, performing and participating in this year's festival. Thank you to our many sponsors and donors without whom none of this would be possible. Thanks also to all the original caretakers of this land, both recorded and unrecorded on whose territory we are able to live, thrive, and create art. Miigwetch, nya:weh, merci and thank you. We wish to acknowledge this land on which we work. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

SLAIGHT MUSIC SING!TORONTO LEGACY AWARDHONOUREE 2022

The SING! Legacy Award statue was designed and sculpted by Saskatchewan artist Jack Jensen.

Each year SING! Toronto honours a person or ensemble who has made a significant contribution to the vocal arts in Canada and internationally. This year’s recognition goes to MusicFest Canada.

MusicFest Canada has been a registered charity since 1972. It is the umbrella organization for 104 volunteer organized local music festivals from PEI to Vancouver Island. Annually, over 400,000 young musicians singing in choirs and playing in bands and orchestras attend these Festivals with their school music teachers. MusicFest Nationals brings together 7000 of Canada's top student musicians each year who perform for recognition as the country’s foremost musical ensembles.

Past vocalists and vocal groups have included the Swingles, Gold Company, That Choir, Sixth Wave, Vertical Voices, the New York Voices, and the HI-LO’S. In addition to these professional groups, hundreds of outstanding high school ensembles have had the opportunity to share their music with students from across the entire country. Each year the festival features the Ellison Canadian Honour Choir, a group of 50 auditioned singers from all provinces under the direction of Scott Leithead.

Next year's Nationals will be MusicFest's 51st, held in Niagara Falls from May 15-20, 2023. Featured performing guests will include the Ellison Canadian Honour Choir, FreePlay, The Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces, and a special concert by the Denny Christianson Tribute Big Band in honour of our departed MusicFest President.

John Chalmers, Chair, Choral/Vocal Jazz Division for MusicFest Canada is accepting the award on behalf of MusicFest Canada.

Ori Shalva & co. Ori Shalva, the Makharashvili singing family, don’t just perform Georgian polyphony. When they sing exploding counterpoint, harmonized rolling melismas enveloped in a velvety drone, or archaic thick sonorities accompanied by rustic folk instruments, they transcend space and time, and take you on a far-off musical journey of Sakartvelo (aka Georgia), a small and ancient mountainous country located on the borders of Asia and Europe.Georgian polyphony is a millennia old tradition known for its distinctive and visceral harmonies and recognized by UNESCO as an intangible masterpiece of humanity. The singing family unit has played an important role in the preservation of Georgian polyphony. Singing for Ori Shalva, like most Georgian singing families, is natural, instinctive, and was originally framed by family celebrations, not staged performances. Unlike other Georgian singing families, however, they are based in Toronto, halfway around the world from the source. Ori Shalva have sung in venues around Toronto, parts of the States, and all over Georgia. The pandemic raised their grassroots beginnings and they were featured in numerous online showcases (SING!, Community Folk Art Council, Labyrinth Ontario, BLOKMUSIC, etc). Sing With Ukraine Sing with Ukraine is a grassroots effort by Toronto-based Eastern European artists, started after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24th. What began as a gathering of friends processing grief together through song, has now become a journey and resistance effort through Toronto’s bars and music venues. We interrupt the pre-scheduled programming to celebrate Ukrainian identity, to show the humanity and culture of those affected, and to awaken ourselves and our city from indifference. www.withukraine.cahttps://www.instagram.com/artists_with/

Theo Tams Theo Tams is rediscovering his identity as an artist. The Canadian singer/songwriter demonstrates a remarkable command of R&B-laced pop music, his silky tenor the unwavering guiding light. Since his last record, 2018’s Call the Doctor, what is most evident is his fearlessness to cannonball right into fresh sonic waves. The music drowns the senses, oozing with intimate lyrics and style. Growing up in a fairly strict reformed Christian household in Coaldale, Alberta, Tams discovered a natural inclination towards music while attending church. Towards the end of the 2000s, Tams’ life changed, first through coming out to his parents and then by winning Canadian Idol. Having released his debut album in 2009, as well as several EPs in recent years, Tams struggled navigating a post-Idol image and harboured a desire to branch out in his work. Now, Tams is unapologetically himself and it would seem that he has finally found his place in the world. www.theotamsmusic.com

In Memoriam: Tyrone Gabriel

The Nylons had the great good fortune to have worked with singer/musician/performer/recording artist of Tyrone's caliber. He was a friend who brought to the stage a skill set of such variety that he elevated the Nylons with his keen ear and broad vocal range. He

had a work ethic that demanded that we continue to progress in forward motion. We will remain forever in his debt, and proud and grateful to have had him in our family for 10+ years. Shine on, dear

brother, we love you, we miss you, and we owe you, now and always.

Claude Morrison, Founding Member of The Nylons

I loved the uncompromising quality and devotion that Tyrone injected into The Nylons In the storied history of the group he was a brilliant star, a man of faith, a devoted family man and a friend and musical collaborator who I, among many others, will miss dearly. Sing on!

Garth Mosbaugh, Nylons Member

Tyrone was a force in the Nylons. He epitomized passion for the music, the vocals, work ethic, love for performing, and the respect for the Nylons legacy. Talented and intuitive, he fit the group like a glove

and honoured us with how much work and enthusiasm he put into performing. I'm glad to have known him, and the Nylons was blessed

to have him.Gavin Hope, Nylons Member

Tyrone brought a breath of fresh air when he joined the Nylons family. He was not only a great performer/songwriter he was a

stabilizing force that pushed the other Nylons through the last stages of the group's career. He brought his vitality to The Nylons when they needed it most and he made my job easier. He was pleasure to work

with... a big man with a big heart. I miss him.Paul Ryan, Manager The Nylons

Rik Emmett "Rik Emmett gained international recognition as the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist with Triumph from 1975 to 1988. Five gold & platinum decades in the music biz provided entry into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame, the Music Industry Hall of Fame, the Junos Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Walk of Fame. Rik was a popular columnist for Guitar Player magazine (his 13 years of Back to Basics resulting in his published educational series, For The Love of Guitar), and an innovative music educator of long standing with Humber College in Toronto, and is the Artistic Director Emeritus of the annual Songstudio Songwriting Workshop. A guitar magazine once wrote that Rik Emmett was “… his own worst enemy … one of the only guitarists out there who may be too talented for his own damn good”. In a digital sound bite world, this offers insight on a music biz lifer, recognizing a unique artist, still going strong. For 49 years, as his own worst enemy, Rik has made choices as a loyal friend to his gifts: never a slave to fashion, offering his best to every audience, of every stripe, in every piece of music that he performs, holding true to the magic power of the music." https://www.rikemmett.com/
