RussiaPolyplastic to acquire a polyethylene pipe maker

One of Russia’s leading pipe systems producer and com-pounder Polyplastic Group is set to acquire the leading western Siberia polyethylene pipe maker, Omsk Pipe Insu-lation Plant (OZTI), in a bid to expand its capacity. The deal, in which Polyplastic is buying 100% stake in OZTI, received the go-ahead from the Rus-sian competition authority FAS, in April. Under the proposed business plan output at OZTI is expected to more than dou-ble and Omsk-based OZTI’s present owner will be taking a stake in the buyer group, with a seat on its board of directors. Currently, the Omsk business, is one of Russia’s five top pipe

producers, and operates 10 ex-trusion lines at its plant. It proc-esses up to 15,000 tonnes per annum of polyethylene every year. The business, formed in 1998, is a major supplier of pipe in Siberia and the Russian far east. Meanwhile, Moscow-based Polyplastic currently operates 11 plants and 9 com-mercial offices across Russia and CIS countries. Its produc-tion facilities are in Moscow, Engels, Klimovsk, Novochebok-sarsk, Dinskaya and Angarsk; at Kalush and Rubezhnove in the Ukraine; in the Belarus city of Kokhanovo and at Step-nogorsk in Kazakhstan. The Group’s annual sales last year were €593 million.

Russia Sibur to import for easing PP shortage in Russia

Russian petrochemicals giant Sibur has announced its deci-sion to import polypropylene (PP) from China, India and the Middle East starting with an initial shipment of 500 tonnes. It will be followed by subse-quent increases in imports up to 2,000 tonnes per month. The company is doing this to offset a shortfall in domestic supply after several Russian plants were forced to halt produc-tion during a high seasonal demand. However, the Mos-cow-based company said, its a temporay measure and it will

sell the imported PP at market prices with a “minimal com-mission” charge. The move will also help in easing the price pressure on its key refin-ing customers. Sibur’s Tobolsk-Polymer project, destined to be Europe’s biggest PP complex to date, will be commissioned early next year. It will have a capacity of 500,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). Last year, Sibur offshoot Tomskneftekhim produced 128,800 tpa of PP while the Sibur/Gazprom neft joint venture SPE Neftekhimiya turned out 114,400 tpa.

INEOS Technologies has l i-censed its Innovene PP process to China Shenhua, a coal to liquid and chemical company based in Beijing, for the manu-facture of polypropylene resins including homopolymers, ran-dom copolymers and impact copolymers. The 300kta plant, located in Yulin, Shaanxi, will serve the rapidly growing Chi-nese PP market.

China Shenhua is a ma-jor coal chemical producer in China. They were the first company to commercialize

the MTO (Methanol to Olefins) process. This Innovene PP plant will be part of their 2nd MTO complex. Peter Williams, CEO of INEOS Technologies, com-mented: “INEOS is very proud to be selected for this project in the growing Chinese coal chemical industry. We appre-ciate the very good relation-ship developed with China Shenhua Group and we look forward to further cooperation with China Shenhua as they expand their business in the coal chemical industry.”

Russia Plastic Logic to embark on ‘Plastic Inside’ strategy

Saudi ArabiaSabic to upgrade Dutch olefins cracker

Plastic Logic, one of the lead-ers in the field of plastic eletro-nics, has dropped its e-reader product line and is going for a ‘Plastic Inside’ strategy. This means selling its plastic back-planes, sensors and tags for customers to incorporate into end products. Following the investment in the company by the Russian VC firm, Rusnano, Plastic Logic will be opening a centre of excellence in Mos-cow. Since being founded by researchers from the Cavend-ish Laboratory at Cambridge University, Plastic Logic has been at the forefront of re-search and investment into plastic electronics.

The company claims that it will kick-start a real electronic paper revolution by manufac-turing print circuits on a mass scale from organic materials. The company is selling bend-

able displays based on their own backplane and an e-ink display which can be overlaid by a capacitive touch layer. And the yields are compara-ble to the LCD industry. Current products are bendable but, in the works, is an ultra-thin dis-

fins cracker in Geleen, Nether-lands. The company said this is

being done to ensure a safer, more competitive and more en-ergy efficient and environment-frindely cracker, which makes plastics feedstocks ethylene and propylene. A “substantial maintenance turnaround” also is scheduled for the site begin-ning in September 2013. How-ever, Sabic maintained that customers will not be affected by the improvement project, which aims to reduce the crack-er’s energy consumption by eight percent. The project was launched April 11 and is expect-ed to improve the company’s cracker in terms of safety, dura-bility and cost efficiency. Sabic is majority owned by the Saudi government, and ranks as one of the world’s largest producers of polyethylene, polypropylene and several specialty plastics.

AustraliaCardia launches worlds 1st bio-container for nutritional supplement and cosmetics market

Australia-based Cardia Bio-plastics has launched the world’s first food contact com-pliant and fully recyclable Bio-hybrid container for the global nutritional supplement market and cosmetics industries. The company is implementing a marketing strategy to launch the Bio-Containers globally. In the first step of this strategy.

Cardia is currently working with both a US manufacturer of plastic containers and a major nutritional supplement company to launch the new Bio-Containers into the US

market. Cardia estimates that the packaging (including con-tainers) for this industry alone represents a multi-million dol-lar business opportunity. This is further supported by “Re-search and Markets” report on the US Nutritional Supplement industry which is estimated to be worth US$22.5 billion per annum.

The company has pro-duced “Bio-Containers” for packaging tablets and cos-metics using its new food contact approved Biohybrid resins. The Cardia Biohybrid

UAEGlobal plastics industry converge at inaugural Plastivision Arabia

IndiaIndia to partner GCC countries in polymers and plastics

The emergence of the Middle East region as a key player in the global plastics industry at-tracted a record visitor turnout at the inaugural Plastivision Arabia and ArabiaMold trade fairs. The shows, which were held at Expo Centre Sharjah from May 14 to 17, received 4,763 visitors from 66 countries during their four-day run. The resurgence in the fundamen-tal growth drivers in UAE and the excitement it has created in the packaging and con-struction industry were the rea-sons for such a huge response,

said the organisers. The packaging sector in

the UAE was valued at $1.84 billion in 2011, and is projected to reach $2.3 billion in 2016. While the construction sector will see nearly $15 billion worth of contracts awarded in 2012, with the total value of current projects standing at $2.2 tril-lion, according to Ventures Middle East. Meanwhile, an-nual consumer expenditure on food, another key end-user segment, reached $23.3 billion last year and is expected to touch $33.7 billion in 2016.

India is aiming to support Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries on value addition, from oil economy to polymers and plastic products, said Jayesh Rambhia, president of All India Plastics Manufac-turers Association (AIPMA), recently.

AIPMA is the co-organiser of Plastivision Arabia which is being held from May 14 to 17 featuring 150 exhibitors from 20 countries. The $25-billion Indian plastics industry has the largest number of exhibitors - nearly half of the total par-

ticipation - while the rest are from China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tai-wan, Turkey, the UAE and the UK.

The packaging sector - a key driver of the plastics in-dustry - in the UAE is valued at $1.84 billion in 2011, register-ing a growth of 4.27 per cent, according to Global Industry Analysts. It is projected to grow at 4.68 per cent to reach $2.3 billion in 2016.

SingaporeSunningdale anticipates difficult conditions for business

Singapore-based injection moulder and toolmaker Sun-ningdale Tech Ltd recorded a 16.6 percent increase in quar-terly sales, compared to the same period a year ago, to US$88.64 million. It also record-ed 63.7 percent increase in the net profit to US$2.64 million.

resins are fully recyclable and comply with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and EU regulatory requirements on materials and articles in-tended to come into contact with food. Cardia’s Bio-Con-tainers have been independ-ently tested and validated to comply with the stringent per-formance requirements of the nutritional supplement and cosmet ics indust r ies . The Bio-Containers are well-suited to store vitamins, medical tablets, food and nutritional supplements, and cosmetic

products. Bio-Containers of-fer excellent physical proper-ties and shelf life for the stored products. In addition to their excellent performance, Bio-Containers require less oil to produce and have a more favourable environmental pro-file and carbon footprint than conventional plastic contain-ers. Cardia Biohybrid propri-etary technology combines renewable thermoplastics with polyolefin material to reduce dependence on finite oil re-sources and to reduce carbon footprint.

The company’s automo-tive and mould fabrication business remains stable and its health-care business con-tinues to grow steadily with new orders coming in. Also, an initiative to expand into other automotive plastic parts is in progress. However, the

company expects the busi-ness environment to continue to remain challenging for the rest of the year due to the o n g o i n g d e b t c r i s i s i n Europe, slower global eco-nomic growth and volatil-ity in foreign exchange rates, which presents addit ional

complexity, the Singapore-based company said in its first quarter report. “Pricing pres-sure from customers, coupled with rising raw material prices and significant labor costs in-crease in China continue to squeeze margins,” the report added.

Bayer MaterialScience introduces “Tango 12”The official soccer ball of Euro 2012

The European Soccer Champi-onship this year or as it is known popularly, Euro 2012, will be played with a cutting-edge synthetic ball that is fast, robust and precise, known as “Tango 12”. Designed and based on the materials developed by Bayer MaterialScience, one of the world’s largest polymer companies, the adidas ball has a surface texture like den-im, allowing players a better ball control and accuracy. Be-sides some interesting optical and haptical effects, it is also responsible for the particularly good flight properties of the ball. The weight of the ball is also optimal and its shell is made up of five layers with a total thick-ness of 1.1 millimetres. The mid-dle layer – an Impranil foam containing millions of gas-filled microcells – is responsible for the optimal contact, whereas the upper layers protect the foam from external influences and help keep the ball looking new longer. The innermost layer is an adhesion coating that con-nects the textile substrate to the layers above. On top of this is

a syntactic foam layer, roughly one millimetre thick, made up of millions of gas-filled cells. The ball therefore quickly regains its spherical shape after being kicked, ensuring optimal flight. “These layers provide for optimal contact with the player’s foot and for very good control in all weather conditions,” explained Thomas Michaelis, project man-ager for ball development at Bayer MaterialScience. The ball is finished off with three compact polyurethane layers of various thickness. They make the surface highly resistant to external factors and abrasion, but also highly elastic, ensuring the ball retains its unique ap-pearance over the long term. The individual panels of the ball shell are bonded together us-ing Bayer’s patented thermal bonding technology and thus absorb essentially no moisture. As a result, the ball is no more than 0.1 percent heavier even in heavy rain and is almost completely waterproof. A raw material development from Bayer MaterialScience is used here, too – the thermo-activat-ed adhesive based on a water

borne polyurethane dis-persion from the Disper-coll U product line. This makes play possible even in heavy rain. The ball, un-like its predecessors, does not have a glossy surface. Rather it is matte, which is the today’s norm. The new ball has the classic black and white design up-dated with host nations col-ours embedded in triangles. Red and white for Poland, and yellow and blue for Ukraine. Tango 12 has undergone com-prehensive laboratory tests, and also impressed both ama-teurs and professionals in eight countries who played with it during a year long test phase. It is also being used in the Ger-man Bundesliga, the Cham-pions League, Major League Soccer in the United States and the Primera División in Ar-gentina. Though the outside design is modifies for each, the structure and properties of the ball remain the same.Meanwhile, Tango 12’s fewer cut edges and greater curva-ture mean fewer seams and edges in the outer shell. Meas-

urements of the diameter at sixteen different points for each ball show that the devia-tion between the largest and smallest diameters is no more than one percent. The ball’s name “Tango” de-buted at the 1978 world cham-pionship in Argentina, and its successors provided for plenty of goals at subsequent champi-onships in the 1980s. Bayer Ma-terialScience and adidas want to continue their successful collaboration and are currently working on the next advance-ment in sports goods.

In fact, QR6711K offers haze levels that are five times lower than the PP671K when processed at low temperatures. This will lead to a cycle-time reduction and energy savings on top of the high clarity – both are important drivers in key markets such as Turkey and China. Other product on display was Sabic’s new PP random copolymer grade, PP651H. The product has a high molecular weight with specially designed properties required for high demanding pressure pipes. It is highly heat stabilized and formulated for extraction resistance. This grade, with a long service life, is used for the manufacturing of PPR pipes and in fittings for the transport of cold and hot water.

A shley Jones – Profile

Vision, strategy and empowerment equals success…

be on refurbishment, re-organisation and skill development as the capital and human assets had largely been run down.

“We have an excellent track record of success,” said Mr Jones but not without some necessary restructuring during the initial years. Two factories in China were consolidated into one closing the Jiangmen plant and moving business to Shanghai to create the critical mass necessary to sustain business. Malaysia too was necessary to close and dividing the remaining business and assets between plants in Philippines and Thailand proved to be essential for long-term success.

Following this opening initial salvo, Jones then developed a two-pronged growth strategy for Asian markets. First, the utilisa-tion of unused European/US technologies to grow organically in existing markets and products. Secondly, development of new business opportunities through identification of narrower more specific market segments using new technology and automation. He sees it as essential to have a strong vision but also to be flexible always ready to move to attack early market trends.

The hard work laid a solid platform for growth. In the Philip-pines, GCS had the dominant market share in their personal care closures market segment and needed. Zeller Plastik is the inventor of the hinged closure, or the butterfly hinge, that many of us are familiar with. Jones identified a major opportunity as a large Bev-erage company broke up with its joint venture bottling partner.

GCS also benefited from Thailand’s strong economic platform and despite political difficulties it’s increasingly chosen as a hub for filling of personal care products for South-East Asia. This in ad-dition to the strong beverage industry, GCS decided to invest in a new factory in 2009 doubling the capacity potential.

Asia has changed since Mr Jones took over GCS Asia Pacific seven years ago. “There was huge diversity among the cities and each country was fiercely independent in identity,” he recalled. He then added that he now compares Asia to Europe before the European Union. Back then each country had the same product but with its own subtle difference. The winds of globalisation have now blown to Asia, and increasing harmonisation means that one can buy products with similar specifications whether in Indonesia, Thailand or China. For example take an everyday product like shampoo, Mr. Jones relates that Asians have a desire to enjoy the best brands and products. When they see advertising and use the products they rightly develop strong faith in the major interna-tional brands. Multi-national brand owners are investing heavily in Asia for their brands and new design packaging with global reach. As a result, many parts of Asia are moving up the technol-ogy ladder.

A global standard by MNCs means that products made any-where in the world, have to be of similar quality. GCS takes ad-vantage of its experience and connections in other parts of the world to serve customers in Asia. Last year, GCS won the Innova-tion Category at Unilever’s “Partner to Win” awards ceremony in London for their “speed of light” development of moulding and closures that allowed Unilever to re-launch the Axe/Lynx men’s shower gel and Clear Anti-Dandruff shampoo simultaneously in

From humble beginnings as an apprentice in a metal packaging factory in the UK, Ashley Jones is now the vice president of GCS Asia Pacific, running the company’s interest in Asia. He shares with APN his journey…

GCS Asia Pacific was a small dormant business before Mr. Jones was appointed in 2006, he arrived with a vision of creating a bigger and modern packaging business with customer serv-

ice at the forefront. In only 5 years, he’s doubled the sales turno-ver, improved profitability and drastically reduced working capital and in doing so has made GCS AP one of the most respected and sustainable closure manufacturers in this competitive Asian market.

Through in-depth market segment analysis he identified and developed many new businesses. For instance, he has grown the Philippines CSD market from zero to a 30% market share in just 2 years. In 2011 he announced the award of business by a lead-ing MNC of a complex 6-part multi-component assembly for the deodorant market. Introduced new leading edge technologies, built new factories and restructured the sales and management organisations to support the growth and complex technologies.

Let’s go back to September 5th 1977 as that was Ashley Jones’s first day of work. As a young Apprentice at Metal Box, his work was largely menial. Located in Neath, South Wales, Metal Box was a part of the town’s bustling engineering and food industries. After a series of mergers and acquisitions Metal Box, through CMB and Crown eventually led to the international group Global Closures Systems (GCS).

GCS consists of 5 geographical regions and six brands, which were previously individual companies: Zeller Plastik, Obrist, Astra Plastique, Bender, Massmould and UCP. “It’s been 35 years since I first joined the company and 28 years of service,” Mr Jones re-counted, with more than a tinge of pride.

Tough, resilient, independent and a loyal company man clearly these are some of his strongest qualities. “I feel like a strong staff of the company, having started from the bottom,” he relat-ed, “this brings a unique view in the Executive Boardroom.”

When Mr Jones took over GCS’s Asia Pacific operations in 2006, the company had five factories spread over four countries: China, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. The initial focus had to

亚洲 u 塑料 u 资讯Asian Plastics News 05/06 2012 22

A shley Jones – Profile

record time. Obrist Thailand played a significant role in winning the award with being the first global producer of the new Clear closure.

Despite its successes in Asia, GCS is not resting on its laurels and has pushed forward with further growth plans. A brand-new bi-injected, in-mould assembled closure has been awarded in China by a major MNC. The closure is GCS AP’s first bi-colour/ma-terial closure using bi-injection moulding technology for the per-sonal care/hair care segment. While the initial outlay will be high, Mr. Jones believes the technology drives down cost and waste enabling the more complex closure to be made at a competitive price which adds significant value to the brand.

Other major new technologies introduced include producing for the developing Chinese oral care market. A 128-cavity mould for closures is already fully loaded in the Shanghai plant. Light-weighting continues to be a major market demand in the plastics industry. GCS has invested in R&D, especially in the beverage sec-tor. “The first couple of months were hard because we need to

build a reliable technology platform” said Mr. Jones, “but now we are selling out and benefitting from the latest technology.”

“Asian employees work very hard, in fact (I would argue) much harder than their Western compatriots” he observed. “They have a strong ambition to do well but often underplay their achieve-ments which are significant. A weakness is that whilst they want to be the best but they settle for being seen as second or third best. There’s little basis for this humility and our people need to be proud of what they achieve.”

“None of GCS success could have happened without the hard work and diligence of our employees. They are very loyal, professional and they work so hard. They deserve to be recog-nized and my regret is that I can’t name them all in this article.”

Mr. Jones is eager to see the plastics industry grows in Asia to-gether and that we need to learn from one another. As Chairman since 2009, is a regular face at the APN’s Packaging Conference. He is chairing the event again this year and is committed to the development of the Packaging industry in the Asian region.

I njection Moulding

Innovations set to change the injection moulding businessInjection Moulding is one of the prime processes for producing plastics products, as it is fast and can be used in mass production of high precision engineering components and dispos-able consumer goods. APN looks at some of the latest innovations in this field

Locally produced injection molding ma-chines from the MX SeriesAt the recently concluded Chinaplas 2012, KraussMaffei showed industry pro-fessionals the MX 850-6100, from the suc-cessful large machine series produced in China. In future, machines in the clamp-ing force range from 8500 to 40000 kN will also be produced at the plant in Haiyan for the Chinese and Asian market. The MX Series is specially designed for hard con-tinuous operation and represents a very compact and powerful production system which combines short machine times with quick cycles and high molding output. The Series has a modular design and can be flexibly adapted for special production requirements. “Our special solutions in in-jection moulding machinery and high ef-ficiency with innovative strength were the main factors in the last few years that al-lowed us to successfully establish ourselves on the Chinese market“, said Michael Müller, General Sales Manager for injec-tion moulding machinery at KraussMaffei. The MX Series from KraussMaffei is now successfully positioned in many industries throughout the world and has set stand-ards, especially in the automotive industry. MX swivel plate and compression mould-ing machines for multicolour television

frames and wind shields are just as suc-cessful as standard machines or produc-tion cells for combined processes using in-jection moulding machinery and reaction process machinery, for example SkinForm or ColorForm. Injection moulding machin-ery is the largest of KraussMaffei’s business units. The company offers four injection moulding machine ranges, the CX, MX, AX and EX, which cover not only standard ap-plications, but also the whole bandwidth of process variants and special processes. Big machines (the MX series) are one area in which the company excels. Another core competence is solutions for the auto-motive industry. Other areas where Krauss-Maffei has intensive expertise are packag-ing, electrical/electronics and medical technology applications. In recent years, the business unit has expanded its special-ized knowledge base in robotic systems and automation The company is rapidly strengthening its position as a partner with the resources and know-how to supply complete manufacturing cells.

World’s fastest injection moulding closure system introducedHusky Injection Moulding Systems has an-nounced the introduction of its new HyCAP high performance package (HPP) system

for high output beverage closure manu-facturing. It is the world’s fastest system for the production of injection moulded beverage closures and represents a signif-icant advancement in beverage closure manufacturing. The system incorporates a new mould concept that eliminates wasted processes and movements within the mold, resulting in the highest levels of productivity for beverage closures. Husky claims that the new system offers up to 20% faster cycle times and up to 20% less energy consumption over its previous gen-eration product. By maximizing efficiencies through the further integration of machine and mould technologies, Husky is able to provide customers with industry-leading productivity without sacrificing part quali-ty. HyCAP HPP also incorporates a number of features that focus on improving ease-of-use and embedding more intelligence into the system itself. Its SmartStart and SmartStop features provide faster and easier startup and shutdown, and with the latest generation of Polari control, offer the highest level of precision and repeat-ability thereby enabling a greater degree of fine tuning, particularly benefiting faster cycling lightweight applications. The new HyCAP HPP system also features a single interface for central control of the entire system, including hot runner temperature control and auxiliary equipment. “Our goal with HyCAP HPP is to grow our lead-ership in beverage packaging by offering a completely integrated solution that is focused on maximizing output and ef-ficiency,” said Jeff MacDonald, Husky’s Vice President, Marketing. “HyCAP HPP provides exactly what customers have been seeking — a closure manufacturing solution that combines the advantages of injection moulding with part cost econom-ics comparable to compression mould-ing.” Husky provides complete injection molding systems including machine, mould, hot runner, temperature controller and process and productivity software. By supplying the entire system Husky is able to provide complete melt stream control, resulting in increased productivity, less waste and improved part quality.

Special software to ease mould designDassault Systèmes (DS) SolidWorks, the 3D Computer-aided design (CAD) graphics company’s has unveiled the new Solid-Works plastics software, which is a user-friendly software tool enabling users to predict and avoid manufacturing defects during the earliest stages of plastics part and injection mould design. This boosts productivity and results in quicker product delivery. The ability to make design chang-es early helps ensure that the mould works right the first time, reducing or eliminating the need for rework and improving part quality. In addition, it provides users with valuable knowledge so they can deter-mine whether changes to the part geom-etry, mould design, material selection or processing conditions, will have a positive impact on the ability to easily manufac-ture their products. This software is based on technology from SIMPOE SAS (SIMPOE), one of the leading providers of plastics in-jection moulding simulation software. As a SolidWorks Gold Partner, SIMPOE currently provides fully integrated, fully will be of-fered under the SolidWorks brand and in two packages — SolidWorks Plastics Pro-fessional for part designers, and SolidWorks Plastics Premium for mould designers and mould makers. The first release of Solid-Works Plastics 2012 is available in North America since April, with other regions and countries to follow later this year.

A new oil cooled servo motor for injection moulding machinesXantop Industries from Taiwan exhibited a new customized oil cooled high torque servo motor especially designed for Injec-tion moulding machine at Chinaplas 2012. By infusing the oil from the hydraulic system of the machine into the interior of the mo-tor, Xantop motor has achieved consider-ably high cooling efficiency with such oil circulation that eliminates the notorious overheating problem as a result of persist-ent heavy loading and frequent downtime in the summer. In addition to the power saving to an extreme, such motor satis-

fies various moulding requirements and prolongs the life cycle of its own. Without the cooling fan to dissipate heat and puff

dust, it is environment friendly. It is the ideal energy saving motor for mid to big injec-tion moulding machine.

In 2009, more than 4000 medical devic-es went through the 510(k) notification process as compared to only 30 PMA

applications for new devices and 1550 additions to existing PMAs. Hence, the popularity of 510(k) in helping fast-track the FDA clearance process is self evident. It requires demonstration of substantial equivalence to another legally US mar-keted device, which means that the new device is at least as safe and effective as the predicate, though not necessarily identical. The equivalence is established with respect to intended use, design, ener-gy used or delivered, materials, chemical composition, manufacturing process, per-formance, safety, effectiveness, labelling, bio-compatibility, standards, and other characteristics, as applicable.

However concerns by FDA that the 510(k) process may have opened up the market to more risk, means that it now demands stricter information on materials used from medical device manufacturers while demonstrating substantial equiva-lency between devices. This is important because in medical and pharmaceuti-cal applications, a change in material composition can impact the mechanical performance and reliability of a device. It could also impact the bio-compatibil-ity assessments performed during various stages of development.

Particularly in packaging applications, the potential effect of material changes on extractables (a substance that comes

FDA gets stricter with 510K Each person who wants to market a Class I, II, and III device intended for human use in the US, for which a Premarket Approval (PMA) is not required, must submit a 510(k) to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is considering stricter norms in granting such approvals. APN reports

facturers of devices and pharmaceuti-cals need to understand that in industrial production of polymer compounds and masterbatches, the normal operational parameters are open to the possibility of cross contamination. For example, normal cleaning procedures may simply involve purging at the end of one run, before the start of another,” said Steve Duckworth, head of global market segment, medical and pharmaceutical, masterbatches busi-ness unit at Clariant, a global speciality chemicals company.

Therefore, for a successful 510(k) sub-mission, the device manufacturer must have information on the materials used, risk of changes to these materials and options to control them in the future. Secondly, they must also have the entire history of material

changes from the launch of the existing device until today for demonstrating substan-tial equivalency. This is pos-sible only if the manufacturer receives supporting data from the supplier profiling the ingredients used for a formu-lation, the process controls, and updates on any defined changes.

“That’s why at Clariant, we have set-up a dedicated healthcare and medical team, and a dedicated range of colour and performance mas-terbatches and compounds known as MEVOPUR. These are produced within the controlled environment of three dedicat-ed ISO13485 accredited global facilities to avoid potential cross-contamination during produc-tion. Our MEVOPUR range con-tains ingredients that have been biologically evaluated using the test protocols of USP 23 part 87, 88 for “Class VI” devices, or ISO10933 parts 4,5,10, 11 and 18,” concludes Duckworth.

out of the material using laboratory extrac-tion under defined conditions and solvents) and leachables (a substance that comes out of the actual package in contact with an actual drug under storage conditions) should not be underestimated. Even if there is no drug contact, and bio-compat-ibility is not required, changes in materials can cause a variation in shrinkage of the plastic moulding, in-built stress or in the physical properties, with a potential risk on device performance and reliability. Worse case scenarios include mechanical failure or jamming of the often tight-tolerance device components.

Though the industry uses a visual qual-ity standard, it should be kept in mind that while the colour appears the same when comparing two different suppliers or batches, the formula may be different. There may be several ways to achieve a similar colour by blending pigments or se-lecting different pigments. Therefore what appears to be the same colour may not be the same recipe.

Take Titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an example. Although sharing the same chemical ‘CAS’ number, the basic TiO2 white pigment may have several dif-ferent types of coatings applied to im-prove dispersion in plastics. If the TiO2 supplier or grade is changed between batches of compound or masterbatch, the difference in coatings and other differences may be observed in the final product. This difference could be significant for a pharma-packag-ing application where leachables is a concern.

Key areas for change occur on the formulation side, but produc-tion methods also play a role in the consistency of a polymeric material. “Normally, medical and pharma-ceutical companies are operating under GMP. In polymer and com-pound manufacturing, this level of GMP is difficult, and in most cases without a green-field site, impossible to implement. So a practical view must be taken. However, manu-

Lab and Test zone at ProPak Asia 2011

Reaffirms its reputation as the leading trade exhibition for the said industries, ProPak Asia 2012 has confirmed par-

ticipation till date of 9 national pavilions with 27 country/regional groups including China, France, Germany, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom and US. The show is Asia’s must-attend event presenting large buying and selling oppor-tunities for industry stakeholders as Thailand rebounds from floods last year, Myanmar opens up, regional consumption surges, and preparations are made for ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015.

“As the largest international process-ing and packaging event in Asia, ProPak continues to highlight the topical issues that are affecting the industry, and brings together the leading manufacturers and suppliers to showcase a wide range of cut-ting-edge solutions to an international au-dience,” said Justin Pau, general manager of Bangkok Exhibition Services (BES), which is a member of the Allworld Exhibition Alli-ance and organiser of ProPak Asia.

Last year’s exhibition attracted 33,376 trade buyers from 61 countries, with ma-jor representations from Malaysia, India, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, China, Myanmar and Bang-ladesh. “With its high annual visitor-ship, ProPak Asia is the perfect platform for Singaporean companies to present their

products and solutions to the industry at large, and to keep abreast of the trends in the market,” added Albert Lim, chairman of the Packaging Council of Singapore. “ProPak Asia 2012’s emphasis on food, drink and pharmaceuticals brings aware-ness to high-performing materials and processes for these sectors. By nature of their perishability and compositions, food, drink and pharmaceuticals put very high demands on processes and packaging materials.”

This year, the show will focus on five spe-cialized zones: drink tech Asia - 11th inter-national beverage and brewing process-ing and packaging technology exhibition; pharma tech Asia – 19th international pharmaceutical & cosmetics packaging and processing technology exhibition; lab & test Asia - 6th international labora-tory equipment, instrumentation, test and measurement and quality control exhibi-tion; and plas tech Asia – 7th international plastic for processing and packaging tech-nology exhibition. In addition, print tech Asia - international printing for processing and packaging technology exhibition, will mark its début at this year’s show.

Meanwhile, ProPak will also feature a series of high-level conferences, seminars, workshops and competitions, with special segments highlighting food, beverage and pharmaceutical solutions. These include

food innovation Asia conference by food science and technology association of Thailand, packaging conference by Asian plastics news, food innovation contest, technology promotion association confer-ence, pharmatech seminar, Thai star and Asia star packaging awards, FoSTAT-Nestle bowl quiz, and green packaging confer-ence.

Emphasising on the total support pro-vided to ProPak Asia by the government of Thailand was Salanraj Sutaschuto, di-rector of board of coordinating depart-ment at the Thailand Convention & Exhi-bition Bureau, and Marut Jitpatima, Thai-land’s ambassador in Singapore. ”ProPak will continue to bring together the ‘Better of the Best‘ in the sectors of food process-ing and packaging, incorporating brew-ing and beverage technology, as well as pharmaceutical technology. Other side events such as conferences and semi-nars will add immense value to the entire show,” said Sutaschuto.

“The processing and packaging indus-tries are growing at an exponential rate in ASEAN and the ProPak 2012 exhibition and conference is designed to equip industry practitioners with perspectives that drive the next level of growth. Building on last year’s theme of going green, we aim to make great strides forward in every sec-tor.” concludes Pau.

Visitor registration at ProPak Asia 2011 Machinery for the drink industry

APN caught up with Justin Pau, general manger of Bangkok Exhibition Services – the organiser of ProPak Asia, on his visit to Singapore recently. Here are some excerpts from the conversation:APN: In the past 20 years, ProPak has grown to become Asia’s one-stop international

processing and packaging event. What’s your vision for this event over the next five years or so?

Pau: My vision for ProPak Asia is to continue to meet the needs of the region’s grow-ing food, drink and pharmaceutical processing and packaging industries, exceed the expectations of our exhibitors and visitors, deliver a high quality international trade event, and strengthen our strong name and position in the region. That’s why we keep adding some new initiatives every year. For example, PrintTech Asia at ProPAk Asia 2012, which is a dedicated zone for printing, labeling, marking, coding and scanning, which are all important elements in the processing and packaging of food, drink and pharmaceuticals.

APN: Please share with us the growth story of processing and packaging industry in Asia? What role can Thailand play in this, particularly, when surrounded by major emerging economic powerhouses like China and India?

Pau: Asia, China and India are all growing fast. Thailand is also growing fast and has a lot of scope for growing more. Thailand has a significant advantage in Asia be-cause it acts as a gateway to Asia. This advantage is even more pronounced with the forthcoming AEC2015, which will connect a combined population of over 580 million.

APN: The floods of 2011 in Thailand affected the processing and packaging industry as well. How will ProPAk Asia help in their revival?

Pau: Unfortunately, the floods effected many industries in Thailand. Many processing and packaging factories were badly effected, machines and lines damaged or destroyed. Many of these factories need to replace and upgrade machines and they will be able to source the latest innovation and technologies at ProPak Asia 2012, kick-starting the revival process.

APN: You are from UK and had also worked in Shanghai, before joining BES. Are there some lessons to be learned by the West, which is reeling under the threat of debt crisis and double-dip recession?

Pau: I first moved to Asia in 1999 because I saw Asia’s potential. Asia has grown un-recognisably since I first arrived and still has the potential to grow significantly. I believe everyone can learn from each other and grow. Asia has learnt from the West and continues to do so to its advantage. The West is learning how best to work with Asia to its advantage too.

APN: Finally, how hopeful are you in regards to the future of Asian processing and pack-aging industry?

Pau: I am very confident about the future of Asia’s food, drink and pharmaceutical processing and packaging industries as I can see a lot more growth. More growth through the demands of meeting both domestic and export consumption. Asian businesses are very sophisticated and buy on specifications and not just on price. Both domestic and international companies are growing their businesses in Asia as Asian countries are consuming many products and services produced by Western companies, and this will help all businesses.

ICS gathers the widest range of techni-cal papers, composites experts and qualified industry delegates in a single

event. It is an educational program that offers forums and technical conferences about the latest innovations in the various application sectors of the composites in-dustry and fosters dialogue between the academic, industrial and final-user sectors. The forums and conferences are based on case studies and lectures by international-ly-renowned specialists in research, design, development and production, specifically mass production.

Last year’s JEC Asia attracted over 7,000 professional visitors from 51 countries, 76% of them from the Asia-Pacific region. “The high attendance of professionals and decision-makers from Asia demonstrated that JEC Asia helps bring in everybody in the regional composites value chain”, said Frédérique Mutel, JEC President and CEO. “This year we aim to highlight latest technologies, technical content and in-novative approaches. The show will also offer a unique platform for exchanges of information and exploiting new commer-cial niches.”

Boosted by sharp economic growth and rapid urbanisation, the increase in demand for advanced composite materi-als has remained strong in the entire Asia-Pacific. In 2010 world production of com-posites increased by almost 5% to reach

5th JEC Asia coming up in JuneThe 5th JEC Asia composites show and conferences, is being organised in Singapore from June 26 to June 28, 2012, at the Suntec international convention and exhibition centre. With biocomposites, automotive and automation as the three main themes, there will also be a In-novative Composites Summit (ICS) on the sidelines of the show

8 million tonnes, of which nearly 38% was represented by the Asia-Pacific region. Ac-cording to an annual survey of the com-posites market carried out by JEC, Asian production should reach 43% of global production of composites by 2015. “We be-lieve composites will see sustained growth in the construction, aeronautics, automo-tive, wind-power and EEE [electrical and electronic equipment] sectors in Asia over the next five years,” added Mutel.

Among new initiatives this year, a iPhone app for JEC Asia has been launched. It will contribute to optimize meetings, schedule conferences and facilitate consultations among exhibitors during JEC Asia and af-ter. There will also be a new area called lab & innovation showcase, which will function as a composites trends observa-tory showcasing innovations and growth in the composites industry sector by sector. A networking and business meetings area will be dedicated to meetings and exchanges to facilitate the flow of business on the ex-hibit floor.

At this year’s JEC Asia, Malaysia has been chosen as the country of honour. Also for the first time, JEC Asia will host a huge Singapore pavilion, with Japan, Republic of Korea, India, Germany and France, also hosting their respective pavilions.

JEC Asia organisers said that Malaysia has been selected based on the rapid growth potential of the local composites

market, and the solid network established between the worlds of science, technol-ogy, R&D, teaching and industry. “The Asian composites industry is increasingly concerned about the environmental im-pact of its production, and this year, JEC Asia has set itself the target of analysing the market for biocomposites, which is an environmentally friendly solution. In this field Malaysia is making a large contribu-tion,” explained Mutel.

The show exhibitors will be presenting a range of innovations in biocomposites, es-pecially the rapid commercial expansion of natural fibres used to replace tradition-al glass and carbon fibres. Natural fibres can improve the environmental compat-ibility of composite materials, especially biocomposites, at a reasonable cost. One such example in Asia is the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, which is speeding up the incorporation of biocomposites in its production vehicles. JEC annual survey shows that composite materials today represent almost 6% of the weight of ve-hicles. This penetration level is likely to rise since advanced composites can help car manufacturers to significantly reduce the weight of their vehicles, thereby reducing manufacturing costs.

Another area with huge demand is of process automation solutions that will help the improvement of manufacture, especially high added-value applications in the aerospace and wind-power sec-tors. JEC Asia 2012 will showcase the lat-est process automation solutions that can help the industry in Asia to optimize costs, enhance productivity and improve the quality of their products. In the wind-pow-er sector, for example, manufacturers of wind-turbines worldwide are increasingly using robots to reduce the costs of blades by up to 40%, so that wind-powered en-ergy can, in the end, become more com-petitive than hydroelectric energy.

“Automation is a powerful engine for technological progress in the composites industry, and JEC Asia 2012 will be offer-ing Asian visitors a platform for finding out about the latest solutions for incorporat-ing automation in composite production processes,” concluded Mutel.
