CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the StudyLearning about English has been directly involved four English skills, they are listening
comprehension skill, speaking skill, writing skill and the last one is reading skill. Those skills are
really important for the learners to study and master. At first, the writer needs to classify two
classifications of these skills into two parts; first, is speaking and writing skills are classified as
productive skill and second, reading and listening skills are classified as receptive skill. At this
writing the writer will focus talking about reading comprehension.
There are some problems students have appeared while learning about reading
comprehension. The problem is not only for the beginner, but also for intermediate and advance
learners, just like how learners can understand about the English reading text. Like getting the
main idea, main problem of the text, topic sentences and many more. This problem might be
easy for learners to solve or getting solution. But at some reasons also, this can be common
problems have been done by all aspect of learners.
The second problem is how the learners comprehend their understanding about one text.
The learners often do this common mistake very often. It could be seen from some reading test
like national examination or even in English test for international standard. For the learners who
take English as their foreign language is getting difficult to understand the English text easily
and broaden their mind to see meaning behind the text itself.
Another case of how students or learners cannot broaden their comprehension is because
the English reading text needs to read for many times. We dont just analysis the construction

and grammatical or the system of its language, but learners insist to understand broaden their
mind and to see the real meaning behind the reading text provided.
For some problems above actually it has been detected in daily English learning whether
at school, private school, and even at university level. Actually it is really important for the
teacher have good strategy in how they provide step of teaching reading comprehension. And
students also will understand about how to broaden their mind about what they learn.
For those problems above, actually there will be one item problem for the writer need to
give solution; it is about the students improvement in reading comprehension by using
skimming method, include how the learners get the main idea of the text and how they broaden
their knowledgment from the text of what they read
.
Improving students reading comprehension by using skimming method at the second
grade students of Mts .. in academic year 2011/2012.
The problem of mastering In this thesis writing, the writer focuses talking about reading
comprehension. Where this
B. Statement of the ProblemBased on the problem stated above, the writer formulates statement of the problem which is
formulated into question. Is skimming method effective to improve students reading

D. Significance of the StudyThe writer formulates two classifications of significance of the study in this investigation they
are:
Theoretical significance
The result of the study is expected to be English teacher guidance to design materials of the
study or and as reference for the learner in improving their reading comprehension.
Practical significance
The result of this investigation on the following day can be an alternative way for theteacher to be applied for teaching reading skill, so the students or learners can understand
easily while learning about English language, especially at reading comprehension.
The result also is expected to help the learner of English more attractive in learning aboutreading comprehension.
E. Scope of the StudyBased on the problem appeared in this study, the scope of its study will talk about the
effectiveness of skimming method tin improving students reading comprehension and the
subject of this investigation will be at the second grade students of MTs (junior high
school) in academic year 2011/2012.

RESEARCH METHOD
A. Research DesignThis study is designed as quantitative research where experimental study which involves
experimental and control group. At first the writer manipulates the condition of the research for
experimental group as the main investigation toward learning process about speaking. Then, the
treatment reveals to English debate technique as (independent variable) in the process of learning
and teaching about speaking to know about the students speaking ability (dependent variable).
The element shown the significance technique used to improve learners understanding. The
second, the writer also deliberately controlled group through the event and teaching in what they
were interested in or by applying the other instrument and material through dialogue technique
used while teaching English for speaking skill.
B. Population and Sample TechniquesBefore the writer goes to the field for investigating the problem which could be
important for writer to know at first is about the technique which makes easily while doing
the investigation in the field.
1. Population
Population is the whole subject in this research area. In the encylopedia of
educational evaluation, population was defined as a set or a collection of all elements
prosesing one or more atributes of interest (Searvia B inderson, 1975 : 339). The

population of this study was student at 2nd
grade of SMAN 1 Keruak in academic year
2011/2012. The number of whole students at this level or grade are 218 students which
are devided into 6 Classes. They are: XI IPA 1: 34, XI IPA 2: 34, XI IPS 1: 36, XI IPS 2:
41, XI IPS 3: 40, and XI BAHASA: 33. Then, the numbers of population are 218
students. But the writer classifies and takes two classes of students as the populations.
They are students of XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2. So the number of populations are 68
students.
2. SampleSample is the part or representative subject from the population. In this study, the
sampling technique used by writer is called classes sampling. It is called classes sampling
because the writer takes two classes as sample of this research, they are: XI IPA 1: which
the number of students in each classes are 34 students, and XI IPA 2 are 34 students. So
the whole samples are 68 students.
If the number of subject is less than 100 of the students, then, all will be taken as
sample but, if the major subject is more than 100, the researcher can get 10% till 15% or
25 or 25% (Arikunto, 2006).
Based on the explanation above, Then, the writer would take all students as sample,
which consist of 68 students that was devided into two class, there are 34 students of XI
IPA 1 class as experimental group and 34 students of XI IPA 2 as control group.
