CELEBRATE LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW

Having fun on the beach while learning to surf might be a rare – or even a once in a lifetime – opportunity for children living

in an orphanage. However, in the spirit of sharing the joy of christmas, odysseys Surf School invited some 15 orphans from KPP Yafma to learn to ride the waves on the famed Kuta beach last Thursday.

cheers and laughter filled the air as the participants had fun under the sun, struggling to paddle their boards and traverse the waves under the guidance of the instructors clad in Santa claus outfits.

First on the agenda was a visit to the badung balawista lifeguard station for a short lesson on safety in the water, followed by cleaning the beach.

“at this time of the year, there is always plastic and trash in the ocean that washes up onto the beach, so it was a great opportunity to show them what really happens when people throw trash onto the streets and into the rivers,” said odysseys manager lentera lenjaya.

before the surf lesson started, the children

were given sunglasses and took part in fun games with the event supporters, including the instructors and staff from oakley bali.

The smiles on the children’s faces were all the team needed as a reward for their efforts and every child was finally able to stand on their board and ride a wave back to the beach.

a delicious lunch provided by Hard rock café awaited the children after all the activities.

This annual “Surfing with Santa” event shares the happiness of this holiday season and gives less-fortunate children a memorable experience. It also serves as a fun way to educate children about taking care of the environment.

“We love to surf and we want to protect our precious ocean. We hope this program will help perpetuate this mindset and encourage others to learn about the importance of keeping our beaches clean. Together we can help our children, and their children, to have a safe and happy future,” lentera noted.

“PrecIouS GIFTS For Poor FamIlIeS”

In the spirit of christmas, footwear producer Indosole llc partnered with the non-profit charity Yayasan Solemen Indonesia to bring shoes and much-

needed goods to a small community of underprivileged people living in Waribang, denpasar.

The beneficiaries, some of whom making a living collecting trash, received the surprise gifts when the team visited them to donate shoes, towels and bed sheets.

The warmly welcomed team brought 50 pairs of adult footwear and rice donated by Indosole, as well as 111 towels and 50 bed sheets donated by bali dynasty resort, which is well known for its years of outstanding philanthropy.

collected and transported to the village by mark Tuck – founder and principal at Paradise Property Group, the donations were accepted with happy faces all around and every item snapped up by the excited villagers.

many of the hard working but low-income families make their living collecting plastic bottles to trade for cash, with one kilogram of plastic yielding rp 3,000 (22 uS cents).

Yayasan Solemen Indonesia, whose work helps the disadvantaged in bali, hoped that the kindness shown by companies like Indosole would help spur others to donate.

“We rely on donations to support families and communities. The small things in life can really make a difference, especially to those less fortunate,” said founder robert epstone.

Solemen invites supporters to donate unwanted goods, clothes and shoes that can be used to clothe the underprivileged.

The foundation regularly distributes food and clothing to needy villages on the island, in addition to its ongoing work encompassing medical assessment and aid, the provision of physiotherapy and nutrition, as well as a host of their other humanitarian services.

The rapid growth of tourism and multitude of development projects being constructed on the island of bali have dramatically changed the landscape and impacted hugely on the

centuries-old agrarian society.Farming is no longer appealing to most, especially the

younger generation, and the multi-tiered rice fields and fertile land are rapidly being concreted over for residences and businesses.

many, however, especially in rural areas, still work in agriculture, including 48-year-old Ketut darta in Jatiluwih in Tabanan, around 60 kilometers northwest of denpasar.

like other farmers in the area, Ketut still uses matekap, a traditional rice cultivating method that employs cows

to plow the soil of their rice fields rather than tractors. The cows work in pairs, pulling long wooden

equipment called uga through the rice fields to turn the soil. other traditional wooden plowing implements used in the matekap method are tengala, singkal and lampit.

“using matekap, farmers can easily work their rice fields. modern tractors are impossible to use on the narrow layers of terraced rice fields,” said Ketut.

most balinese farmers have learned all about farming skills and techniques from their ancestors, along with irreplaceable traditional wisdom that suits the island’s condition where modern farming methods would not. They are very familiar with their own environment, rice fields, water and cattle, all of which have supported their agricultural endeavors for hundreds of years.

Cover Story

monsoon rains, strong winds and cool weather are the order of late december in bali. The rainy season, however, will not be able

to dampen the festive season’s spirit that burns joyfully inside each and every one of us.

It is also the time when the island’s top tourist establishments wage an all-out, spare-no-expense battle to outdo each other in presenting the most gorgeous christmas dinners and the liveliest new Year’s eve parties.

It means that holiday-goers and party lovers have a long list of attractive options, none of which will disappoint.

below are brief reviews of the offerings from some of the island’s upscale establishments.

LODgINgSWith a sweeping view of the Indian ocean,

banyan Tree in ungasan has become a favorite sanctuary among well-to-do travelers. Perched 70 meters above sea level, the resort’s estate and service has distinctive balinese touches that blend flawlessly with the ethereal charm of the island.

It offers a special festive season package, valid for bookings until dec. 31, that includes three consecutive nights stay, daily buffet breakfast, new Year’s eve dinner, and complimentary return airport transfers.

CHRISTMASWhether you want an intimate by-the-beach

dinner with your other half to reflect on love and companionship, or a warm family feast to celebrate filial love and sibling rivalry, the island’s hotels and restaurants are well set to give you a christmas dinner you will still remember for many years to come.

The posh resort of W retreat and Spa bali – Seminyak has christmas culinary celebrations well covered at its three dining venues: Fire, Starfish bloo and Woobar. on christmas eve, Fire’s director of cuisine, Jack Yoss, will recreate the comforts of home delights for you with stations and stations of the finest of meats and classics with a twist. meanwhile, Starfish bloo chef de cuisine matthew mccool will create a Pan-asian holiday degustation menu for the more discerning palate, with an à la carte menu also available.

There is nothing wrong with having a musical party on christmas eve and Woobar has dJ Silky

ready with the beats and melodies. originally mentored by “Godfather of House” Frankie Knuckles, uK talent Silky is a vinyl loving dJ with rare old-school mixing techniques and deep crate selections that only serve to amplify his roots in early house and techno.

The christmas celebrations continue on Sunday, when Fire holds its Hawker House street feast brunch, during which the restaurant is transformed into a bustling Southeast asian marketplace offering favorite street food classics.

meanwhile, nusa dua beach Hotel and Spa has organized a special christmas eve dinner that includes christmas carols performed by children from alas Kasih orphanage in its Keraton ballroom while its Wedang Jahe restaurant will present a seafood barbeque dinner on christmas day.

The newly opened, super luxurious mandapa, a ritz-carlton reserve, in ubud, features special christmas menus that are inspired by the abundance of fresh local produce and healthy ingredients with its assorted selection of Indonesian, Pan-asian, mediterranean and international flavors.

christmas celebrations at mandapa comprise dulang afternoon Tea in the library on dec. 24 and 25, christmas eve dinner buffet at Sawah Terrace, a festive five-course menu with Indonesian and Pan-asian cuisine at Sawah Terrace on dec. 25 and a five-course degustation menu with mediterranean and international cuisine at Kubu on dec. 24 and 25.

nusa dua’s Grand nikko offers an exciting twist to the traditional christmas eve dinner with a christmas fire dance to entertain its patrons during a hearty five-course dinner at its beachfront venue, The Shore restaurant and bar.

The restaurant also presents a carvery

night buffet for christmas. Patrons can enjoy a fine selection of carved meats and traditional accompaniments, as well as live music performances.

NEw YEARParty vibes reach their peak during new

Year’s eve and the ladies will surely want to look their best that night. no worries, Ioco, the bali-based boutique fashion house, has a huge surprise for fashion-conscious party animals.

House of Ioco boutique at Sunset road 88x and SooK Kuta Square are holding their annual christmas bazaar, open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Jan. 15. during the bazaar, the two stores offer a world-class fashion shopping experience at unbelievable prices. more than 6,000 premium quality fashion garments are available with prices starting from rp 20,000 (uS$1.46). Santa is definitely ahead of schedule just for you at House of Ioco boutique and SooK Kuta Square.

Partying on an empty stomach is always a bad idea. Fortunately, Grand nikko has a unique new Year’s eve dining event at its benkay Japanese restaurant. called Toshikoshi Soba (year-crossing soba), from the à la carte menu patrons can choose their favorite soba dish, a symbol of good luck and longevity for the year ahead.

after that, they can head to the hotel’s mPF ballroom to celebrate the arrival of 2016 at a gala dinner and night party inspired by box-office animation musical Frozen. Guests will be transported to an ice-covered reception that opens up to the festivities of a buffet-style gala dinner featuring multiple live stations. a succession of stilt walkers, a magician, fortune teller, live band, fluoro-dance, aerial dance, tron dance and exciting flash mob will keep patrons

entertained throughout the night. The young at heart, however, should brave

the likely traffic congestion and heavy rain to reach W retreat and Spa bali. The awaiting reward will make the arduous journey, well, much less arduous.

Join the Stop the clock 2016 Party at W lounge featuring dJ claptone, known for his dazzling golden bird mask and shamanistic sonic powers. claptone will launch his new album Charmer that night. a special occasion for a dJ means one thing: said dJ will spin like there is no tomorrow. So go gold, don a mask and stop the clock at W lounge. The W fireworks and lightshow are surely a blazing way to say goodbye to 2015.

Since 1900, the population of the bornean orangutan has declined by 75 percent, and currently there are only an estimated 54,000 living in the wild.

With continually declining numbers and immediate threats to their habitat such as hunting and illegal trade, this asian creature native to the island of borneo is listed as an endangered species.

recent devastating fires across Kalimantan have caused many orangutans on the island to suffer and their future survival depends on urgent conservation action.

In response to this pressing environmental concern, Swiss-belhotel International and the borneo orangutan Survival (boS) Foundation, supported by Quiksilver Indonesia and coca-cola amatil Indonesia (ccaI), have taken bold action to help prevent orangutan extinction.

The companies initiated the campaign #SaVedodo as a channel for all stakeholders to support the conservation of this species.

The campaign bears the name dodo as this is one of the orangutan survivors, who has subsequently become the face of the initiative.

Swiss-belhotel International initially started the campaign to take a stand on environmental concerns in borneo, one of the areas where the company operates.

“However, we realize that this is not a journey to be taken alone. Having Quiksilver and ccaI on board will enable us to amplify this campaign and create a bigger impact,” said chairman and president of Swiss-belhotel International Gavin m. Faull.

The #SaVedodo campaign will raise funds through specially designed Quiksilver T-shirts, which are on sale at selected Swiss-belhotel International and Quiksilver outlets across Indonesia starting this month.

The proceeds will be used for the rehabilitation of dodo and other orangutans at the boS Foundation facilities.

“Through the purchase of the Quiksilver #SaVedodo T-shirt, everyone can help to ensure the orangutans receive proper care and rehabilitation and the opportunity to be returned safely to the wild. now more than ever, we need people to join hands and support orangutan conservation efforts,” Jacqui

Sunderland-Groves, deputy ceo of the boS Foundation said.

For only between rp 145,000 and rp 245,000 (uS$10.64 - $17.97) for a T-shirt, the public can contribute and ensure that dodo and his friends continue to survive for generations to come.

Sammy Gosling, marketing executive for Quiksilver Southeast asia, commented, “We are proud to be partnering with like-minded organizations to help support the bornean

orangutans as they face the difficulties of a changing world, and we hope to make a difference.”

“being a part of this #SaVedodo campaign is an important step that all of us can take for the conservation of our natural forests. We understand the importance of participating and leading change for a more sustainable future,” Kristy nelwan, ccaI head of corporate communications added.

“butterfly… butterfly,” called out nandhya, a little girl who was chasing dozens of colorful butterflies flying freely around Taman Kupu-Kupu, a butterfly park in banjar Sandan lebah, Wanasari in Tabanan regency.

nandhya had visited the park over the weekend with her family, who were keen to introduce her to the beauty of the nature and the world of butterflies.

located around 7 kilometers from downtown Tabanan and 31 kilometers from denpasar, the 1-hectare butterfly park is a conservation area for more than 25 species of Indonesian butterfly, as well as serving as a family park for local people.

lucky visitors have the rare opportunity to see various protected and endangered butterfly species, such as the giant barong, birdwing and bali peacock butterflies.

Putu, a caretaker at the park’s breeding center, explained the butterfly’s life cycle, saying, “It takes two months for a caterpillar to transform into a butterfly.”

The adult butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves of food plants and these hatch to

become caterpillars within four days. one month later, they would form cocoons and undergo metamorphosis. eventually the pupal skin splits and the young butterflies emerge and fly off.

The breeding center is home to butterflies from all over Indonesia.

“We usually bring in butterfly pupae, as butterflies themselves have a very short life span,” Putu said.

once, they tried to bring in living butterflies from outside bali, but they could only survive for one day because of the different living conditions.

“a butterfly hardly has time to adapt to a new living environment,” he said.

There are hundreds of dried butterflies and other insects on display in the small museum there.

The park opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and charges an entrance fee of rp 15,000 (uS$1.10) for children and rp 30,000 for adults. Foreign visitors are charged a higher fee.
