    Performance Management

A set of functions that evaluate and report

    the behavior of telecommunications equipment

the effectiveness of the network or network element

    Performance management includes all activities

necessary to maintain the short term customer

    view of quality of service

    Goal

The goal ofperformance managementis tomeasure and make available various aspects ofnetwork performance so that internetworkperformance can be maintained at an acceptablelevel.

    Examples of performance variables include

    network throughput,

    user response times,

    line utilization

StepsPerformance management involves three main steps

    Performance Management

    Gathering data

Performance data is gathered on variables of interest to networkadministrators.

    Analyzing data

The data is analyzed to determine normal (baseline) levels.

Determining threshold Appropriate performance thresholds are determined for each important

    variable

Exceeding these thresholds indicates a network problem worthy of attention

    Performance Monitoring

Performance monitoring (PM) involves the collection ofdata relating the performance of the network elements, designed

to measure the overall quality using monitored parameters to detect characteristic pattern before the quality of signal drops

    below an acceptable level.

The common function NE sends current PM data to telecommunication management

    network (TMN) on its request.

It may be generated periodically by the NE and sent to TMNwhenever it demands or by parameter threshold triggering.

TMN directs the NE to start/stop the collection and to reset storageregisters for PM data.

    Performance Controlling

TMN makes NE to set up a schedule for reporting of PM data, to sendthe PM data report schedule and to assign designated values to PMattributes.

NE sends current PM attributes to TMN on its request.

    TMN directs NE

to change or to set the PM parameter threshold,

to set up a schedule for the execution of QoS test calls

to change or to set the attributes of QoS test calls,

to start/stop sending test calls and sends the current QoS test call attributes. NE reports the result of QoS test to TMN whenever it demands or on a

    schedule basis.

    Performance Projection

    Performance management also permits proactive

    methods

For example, network simulation can be used toproject how network growth will affect

    performance metrics.

Such simulation can alert administrators toimpending problems so that counteractive

    measures can be taken

    Goal

    The goal offault managementis

to detect, log, notify users of network problems

automatically fix (to the extent possible) networkproblems to keep the network running effectively.

Because faults can cause downtime orunacceptable network degradation, fault

management is perhaps the most widelyimplemented of the network managementelements

    Procedures

    Fault Management includes all

    procedures necessary

    to handle system alarm,

to correct and test falling equipment,

    to respond intelligently to customers

    complaints

    Alarm Handling

TMN is able to monitor NE failures in near real time.

Indication is made by the NE when a failure occurs.

TMN determines the nature and severity of the fault basing on theindication.

It may determine the effect of the fault on the services supported

by the fault equipment in two ways

a data base within a TMN may interpret binary alarm indication from the

    NE, or

it may transmit self- explanatory messages to a TMN if the NE has

    sufficient intelligence,
