REDEEMER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
LINCOLN SQUARE
Vision
To joyfully live as reflections of God’s love together in the city
Mission
• To be a church not for ourselves, but for others
• To value questions and the people who ask them
• To be a place where members of our community are known, loved and cared for
Following the service
Question and Response: We hold a time of Q&R after service each week with Pastor Michael. If you have any questions about the elements of our service or faith in general, you can text them anonymously to 657-777-2754.
Prayer: If you would like to pray with a church leader, men and women, who serve as elders, deacons and deaconesses, will be standing next to “Pray” signs in both corners of the Auditorium (behind the orchestra section). You can walk up to request prayer after the Benediction. If you would like to submit prayer requests online instead, visit lincolnsquare.redeemer.com/prayer.

Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
September 11, 2022
10:30 a.m.
Lay down your weary tune, lay down,Lay down the song you strum. And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings,No voice can hope to hum.
— Bob Dylan
All shall work together for good. Everything which he sends is needful; nothing can be needful which he withholds.
— John Newton
Preparation — Dr. Vanessa Hawkins
Call to Worship — from Psalm 63 (NIV)
Leader: You, God, are my God; earnestly I seek you.
All: Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
Leader: I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
All: I will be fully satisfied as with the riches of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
Preparing for worship With so many distractions vying for our attention, this is a time to listen to the prelude music, read the reflection quotes, and prepare for the service.
Call to Worship If worship is offering all that we are to all that God is, this is a proclamation of our intention. It is also a challenge to ourselves about what we worship daily.

Prayer of Adoration
(Concluded by the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Doxology
All ye who are of tender heart, Forgiving others take your part, Sing his praises, alleluiaYe who long pain and sorrow bear, Praise God and on him cast your careO praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Let all things their creator bless And worship him with humbleness, O praise him, alleluiaPraise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit three in oneO praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Prayer of Confession
God of love, it is your will that we should love you with heart, soul, mind, strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, but we are not sufficient for these things. We confess that our affections continually turn away from you: from purity to lust, from freedom to slavery, from compassion to indifference, from fullness to emptiness. Have mercy on us. Order our lives by your holy Word, and make your commandments the joy of our hearts. Conform us to the image of your loving Son, Jesus, so that we may shine before the world to your glory. Amen.
Private Confession
Prayer We pray because we know we can bring our concerns for ourselves and for others, for the world and for the church, to God. The Prayer of Adoration is a time to thank God for bringing us into his presence and to get a glimpse of his beauty.
The Lord’s Prayer Jesus gave this example in the New Testament (Matthew 6:9-13) to show us how to pray. We use this prayer corporately each week as a reminder.
RENEWAL
Confession Confession is when we are honest about ourselves, each other, and with God. As we admit our misplaced affections, we are called to reorder our lives. Only by being honest with our needs will the good news of grace be significant.

Words of Encouragement — Matthew 12:20-21 (NIV)
A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. In his name the nations will put their hope.
Song of Renewal — 10,000 Reasons
Chorus:Bless the Lord oh my soul, oh my soulWorship his holy nameSing like never before, oh my soulI’ll worship your holy name
The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawningIt’s time to sing your song againWhatever may pass and whatever lies before meLet me be singing when the evening comes
(Chorus)
You’re rich in love and you’re slow to angerYour name is great and your heart is kindFor all your goodness I will keep on singingTen thousand reasons for my heart to find
(Chorus)
And on that day when my strength is failingThe end draws near and my time has comeStill my soul will sing your praise unendingTen thousand years and then forevermore
(Chorus)

Song of Praise — In Christ Alone
In Christ alone, my hope is foundHe is my light, my strength, my songThis cornerstone, this solid groundFirm through the fiercest drought and stormWhat heights of love, what depths of peaceWhen fears are stilled, when strivings ceaseMy comforter, my all in allHere in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone, who took on fleshFullness of God in helpless babeThis gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones he came to save‘Til on that cross as Jesus diedThe wrath of God was satisfiedFor ev’ry sin on him was laidHere in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground his body layLight of the world by darkness slainThen bursting forth in glorious dayUp from the grave he rose againAnd as he stands in victorySin’s curse has lost its grip on meFor I am his and he is mineBought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in deathThis is the pow’r of Christ in meFrom life’s first cry to final breathJesus commands my destinyNo pow’r of hell, no scheme of manCan ever pluck me from his hand‘Til he returns or calls me homeHere in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand

Community Testimony
The Peace of Christ
In the ancient church, members of the congregation greeted one another with a sign of friendship. In the same way, let us welcome one another.
At this time, LSQ Kids (kindergarten through 6th grade) are dismissed to their classes.
Announcements
For today’s highlighted announcements and updates, see Pages 12 and 13.
Passing of the Peace A long-standing tradition of the church, this is a time when we have the chance to greet one another, regardless of our relationship, as individuals made in God’s image. It is more than a mere greeting — it is an acknowledgement of one’s innate humanity that deserves to be addressed as well as a call to be united despite our differences.

Scripture Reading — Jeremiah 29:1, 4-9 (NIV)1 This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from
Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
4 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the LORD.
Sermon — “A Church that Loves the City”
First sermon in series: LSQ DNA
Dr. Michael Keller
HEAR
Sermon The sermon is teaching based on Scripture. This is not just an intellectual function. The role of the sermon is to make real the truths of the gospel. As we see who God is and what he is doing, our hearts are to be affected.
