New Mexicans are in the right spot ll>!f DIANNE STAWNGS Ruidoso News Slaif Wrlier

New Mexicans in the Sacramento Mountains and Alarnegordo will claim a rlogaide seal for an annular eclipse set to roll aeross tho sky May 10.

An annular eclipse i~ dilferent :&om a toto1 solar eclipSe, in which the moon's cbadow paesaa over tho center of the IIWl and blacks the solar disk completely, leaving a ring of sunligbt streaming armmd the circumfarence.

During an annular eclipse, the moon passes across the center of the sun, but it appeare smaller than the sun because at that mo. ment, the moon happens to be slightly further from tho Earth than usual. , According to a oewe releaoe :&om the National Solar Oboarvetory at Sacramento Peak, since tbe moon does not complettly block the sun, the sky appears blue and the faint ~ona is invisible.

"A partial solar eclipse is seen by observers who are not located on the eclipse centerline," aceording to infoT'Uation in the release. "In this case, the moon passes to one side of the center of the sun, and only a piece of the sun in blotked."

The eclipse in May will be visible from much of North America. The centerline stretches :&om 'San Ignacio in Baja, California, Mexico, through El Paso and Amarillo, Texas; south of Kansas City, Missouri; south of Chicago, Dlinois; through Detroit, Michigan, Buffalo New York, most of Vennont, New Hampshire and southern Maine and through Halifax, Nova Scotia.

For Sunspot, New Mexico, near Cloudcron, the eclipse will begin before 9 B.m. and will end just before noon. Maximum eclipse will occur at 10:12 a.m., when 87 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon and only a thin ring of sunlight will be visible.

Factoring in the probability of good weather, the Space Center in Alamogordo will become one of the

bast loeatioos in the world ~ whioh to view this eclipse. The celltar io l!enriog up for the event and the pubUc is invited to Bti>P and view tho apectaeulor phonomiioun.

The Space Center will be selling oelipee glaaoos (contact Micbael Turner or Keno Hitoheoek at 1-900-545-4021 for more information). The glaooee cootein mylar filters that prevent damaging suoHgbt from reaching retinas.

Another method of viewing is to punch a hole in a piece of paper and tape the paper over the mirror so that the hole Is llueh with the 11111'

The night before the eclipse, the center plans two free presentations in the planetarium to discuBS the science of the eclipse and give demonstrations on how to view it. Times are 5:30 and 7 p.m, Monday, May9.

The day of the eclipse. the center and the Alamogordo Amateur Astronomare will set up teleseopea in the planetarium parking lot to allow for eyepieee proteetion viewing. Several local anchor companies contributed between $500 and $2,500 last year, and EDC is count· ing on their repeated generosity. EDC must also double its member· ship to collect enough money for operating expenses.

Executive director Karen Kopp reported that the corporation currently has enough money to survive through September.

"If we don't get the support from our members, we'll have to close shop," said Mound.

"I've been on this board for three years, and I joined EDC because I believe we need a third economy to consistently employ people," said director Glen Crane.

He stressed the importance Df infonning the community of EDC's goals and accomplishments. Nunley said it's a1so important to explain to
