WELCOME MESSAGEWELCOME MESSAGE
President of The Royal College of Surgeons of EdinburghIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Conjoint Scientific
Congress in Hong Kong. 2018 marks the 9th year of our partnership with
The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong flagship Annual Meeting. “Towards
Safer Surgery”, this year’s theme, brings together expertise across the
surgical disciplines and there will be much to learn from each specialty in
quest of a common goal to make surgery safer and to improve outcomes
for our patients. Prof. Kent-man CHU and Prof. S Michael GRIFFIN are to be
congratulated in assembling such an excellent programme with contributions
from many leaders in the field of their respective practice.
In Hong Kong and in the United Kingdom we grapple with the issues surrounding delivery of
good surgical training in the face of ever increasing pressures in the surgical workplace. This year’s
conference will provide the opportunity to share the challenges and the experiences from both
training systems during our plenary “Training Forum” on Saturday lunchtime. This new session
plus our annual Surgical Grand Round on Sunday morning are just two examples in this year’s
programme of how we value the importance of supporting education and training for the next
generation of surgeons – a shared commitment from both our Colleges.
This year will be the last year that I attend this Joint Congress as President of the Edinburgh College.
Over the years, I have seen the event grow from strength to strength and with it has grown the
collaboration between The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and our own College. In November,
I pass on the baton to my colleague Prof. S Michael GRIFFIN – no stranger to Hong Kong nor to this
conference! I know that with his stewardship over the coming years that the partnership between
our Colleges will continue to flourish.
I am sure that we will all benefit from the shared debate over the next few days. I wish you all a
most successful and enjoyable conference as we refresh old friendships and build new ones.

WELCOME MESSAGEWELCOME MESSAGE
President of The College of Surgeons of Hong KongI am honored and delighted to welcome you to the Conjoint Scientific
Congress 2018 co-organized by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
and The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. This Congress not only
represents an invaluable opportunity to colleagues greeting old friends
and fostering new friendship, it is also a great occasion for everyone to
reinvigorate latest cross-specialties surgical knowledge.
In line with this year’s theme “Towards Safer Surgery”, this Congress will
offer us a wide spectrum of scientific programmes addressing the needs for a heightened attention
to patients’ safety as well as the well-being of medical practitioners in the ever-challenging surgical
environment nowadays. We are greatly honoured to have Prof. Christopher CHAPPLE to stimulate
valuable discussions at the GB Ong Lecture titled “Evidence Based Urology in 2018: Is This a
Reality?” on Saturday.
Participating in this Congress would undoubtedly provide us new perspectives for excelling in our
current discipline. And without the contributions of our vital backing, this salient event would not
be convened successfully. Once again, we would like to acknowledge the tremendous effort of
Prof. S Michael GRIFFIN & Prof. Kent-man CHU and the organizing committee of the two Colleges.
We are also thankful for all the local and overseas faculty members who come a long way to create
this inspiring scientific congress.
I believe this Congress will bring us a fruitful and enjoyable experience. I look forward to meeting
you all at the Congress.
Prof. Paul Bo-san LAIPresident of The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong

Prof. Kent-man CHUCo-ChairmanScientific CommitteeCSC 2018
We are pleased to welcome you to the Conjoint Scientific Congress 2018 of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.
In industrialized countries, nearly half of all medical errors in inpatients are related to surgical care and nearly half of these are preventable. While surgery is meant to save lives or improve the quality of life, unsafe surgical care could cause considerable harm or even mortality. It is therefore important to practice safe surgery. With the theme of “Towards Safer Surgery”, experts from various specialties are invited to contribute to a diversified and informative programme. We are particularly honoured to have experts from the local, mainland, and overseas institutions contributing to this Congress. Apart from attending the sessions, you are encouraged to participate actively during the discussion period. By the end of the Congress, we hope the practice of safe surgery is in the mind of all attendees.
We are delighted to have received about 130 quality abstracts this year. They had been marked by our local and Edinburgh adjudicators. Selected abstracts would be presented at the oral free paper, motion picture, and E-poster sessions. A new plenary Poster Round is introduced this year and the best presentation will be awarded the Best Poster Award. Please support your colleagues at these exciting sessions.
The College is revising the training curriculum, starting with the basic surgical training. A major highlight of the Congress this year is the Training Forum in which colleagues from the Edinburgh College and our College would share thoughts on surgical training. Both trainers and trainees are strongly invited to participate in this Forum and share their ideas on surgical training.
Blood is both friend and foe for a surgeon. We are grateful to have Dr Cheuk-kwong LEE delivering a keynote lecture on blood management, a very important topic for surgeons.
We would like to thank our local and overseas faculty members for their contributions and our industrial partners for their generous support. We are also indebted to the dedications contributed by the Scientific Committee and the Secretariat. We hope all of you will have a wonderful and rewarding time during the Congress.
