New Year blessings & well wishes from sunny Orchid!
2018 has been an eventful year for us. We celebrated our Silver Jubilee with the OCC 25th Anniversary Golf Friendly and closed the year with a bang with several memorable events in December, like the Christmas Light Up, Christmas Golf Game and the Countdown Party 2019. The “Share A Gift” project initiated by the Boys Brigade for their beneficiaries in the spirit of giving during the Christmas period received overwhelming response from members and OCC colleagues. We thank those who have contributed, for their generosity and kindness that have made a difference in someone’s life. As we bid 2018 farewell and welcome 2019, we promise you an equally exciting year ahead with more intriguing and fun-filled events and activities, and new improvement initiatives and upgrading projects in the pipeline to serve you better. Keep your eyes peeled for more information in the coming months so that you can register early and be part of the excitement!
I am pleased to announce that the Club newsletter has been renamed from ‘Smile’ to ‘Orchid Ripples’. Ripples are likened to positive energy and effects of what we do, the services we excel to provide and the events and activities that we customise to your needs and expectations. These ripples carry positive vibes, are impactful and we hope it will resonate well in our communications with our members. Ultimately what the Club envisages and plans to do is to create a platform for two-way communications to receive constructive feedback and valuable suggestions that would build trust and confidence, thus keeping members well informed and actively involved. You will have noticed by now we have a new design layout including new content headings outlining the various articles for ease of reference.
Another exciting announcement we have for you is the launch of a brand-new membership card. As part of our continuous efforts in this digital age, the new membership card will come with a radio-frequency-identification (RFID) feature. This will help to facilitate and expedite payment transactions, registration and access to Club facilities, leading to hand-written or manual registration a thing of the past; with stronger personal data security and in compliance with PDPA guidelines. We have also taken the opportunity to initiate a “Members’ Particulars and New Photos” updating exercise in December in view of the upcoming launch of the new membership card. Members can exchange their old card for the new card from 4 March 2019 (Monday). From 1 April 2019 onwards, the Club will accept only the new membership cards. Therefore, we strongly urge you to expedite with the one-for-one replacement of the new cards as soon as you can during the month of March so that there will not be any disruption to your use of the Club facilities and services. A sneak peak of the new membership card designs is on page 5.
On the golfing front, the practice chipping and putting greens near Aranda Hole 9 were reopened at the end of December 2018, after a temporary closure to facilitate the re-surfacing and growing-in of two new green turf species, which are Trinity Zoysia and Primo Zoysia. The golf course maintenance team will monitor the turf agronomic qualities and play performance to assess the suitability for future greens upgrading. Generally, we are delighted to report that
the greens have shown great improvements from various cultural practices resulting in better greens turf density and has become more resilient with improved playability. The golf course maintenance team is also embarking on weeds eradication programme on the fairways and immediate rough areas. Please be informed that the maintenance team will be vigilantly carrying out re-turfing work on brown patches as a result from herbicide and pesticide sprays. The end result of this exercise is a uniform surface that has good turf purity, aesthetics and improved playability on the fairways and immediate rough. Our golfing members can look forward to a more enjoyable golfing experience with certainty. I would also like to reiterate to all golfers to constantly remind your golf kakis to repair divots and ball marks; together we can make a positive impact to keep our golf courses in pristine condition. Your efforts and contribution are important in sustaining the overall playability, aesthetics and enjoyment of the golf courses. Together we can make a difference!
In celebration of Chinese New Year, we are thrilled to enclose the Club’s ‘Ang Pow’ packets together with this issue of Orchid Ripples. We hope that you and your family will enjoy the unique design of this year’s ‘Ang Pow’, including the OCC 2019 Calendar by now, which were mailed out to all members in December. On behalf of my OCC colleagues, I would like to express our sincerest and heartfelt gratitude to all members for their kind contribution to the 2019 ‘Ang Pow’ Fund. Your generosity serves as an encouragement and motivation for us all, and has warmed our hearts during this festive season.
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” – Winston S Churchill

A WARM ‘THANK YOU’ TO OUR VENDORS & SPONSORS!
The second Range Carnival of the year was a great success as we welcomed an overwhelming number of vendors that supported us with special deals and unique products at the Golf Equipment & Apparel Bazaar. Participants got to try out exciting activities such as rainbow calligraphy and chopstick calligraphy, and savour traditional candies like malt candy and dragon beard candy. The Carnival concluded with the highlight of both days – the Lucky Draw. We would like to thank all participants and vendors for helping to make this event a memorable one!

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCEThe greens are making steady progress and continue to improve despite the year-end monsoon season. The greens are of better turf coverage on the putting surface, with higher turf density and better turf vigour. The improvement made on our green turf quality translates to better putting quality with truer line of putt, faster green speed and higher consistency.
The Club works closely with the golf course maintenance contractor to ensure our maintenance programmes enhance the playability of the golf course in all play areas; this also ensures long-term sustainability of turf growth and turf performance.
The Club is still working on the weak greens to achieve full recovery after the heavy hollow-tining in June 2018. These greens are Dendro green #1, #7, #8, #9 and Vanda green #9. Special maintenance programmes are tailored for these greens to expedite their recovery. We are seeing encouraging positive response from the turf after carrying out the programmes.
All greens undergo regular needle-tine aeration to promote water percolation and air exchange for deeper root system and higher shoot density. The needle-tine process is fine-tuned to leave minimal disruption to the playing surface.
Tee boxes were maintained at high standards to continue to provide golfers with good foot stance, levelled surface, uniform turf free from weed, and firm tee ground.
The Club is also embarking on a weed control programme to prevent the spread of weeds such as cow grass, nut sedges and spurges on the fairways. Herbicide spraying was carried out on all fairways. Golfers may notice brown patches on the fairways as the herbicide takes effect. The surrounding Zoysia grass will progressively take over the dying cow grass which has been weakened. Re-turfing work will be carried out on the large brown patches. We seek golfers’ understanding to bear with us during this process of weed eradication.
In the pipe line, the golf course accessories will progressively be replaced with new sets. These include distance markers, bunker
Improvement work was carried out on green collars in particular those with a high percentage of weed invasion. The old mixed turf was stripped off and replaced with new sod of pure Paspalum grass from the nursery. Once the new turf is established, it will provide a uniformed surface that is visually pleasing with better playability.
rakes, flagsticks, pin cups and pin flags. Golfers can look forward to a fresh feel.
The practice chipping greens and practice putting greens near Aranda 9 were stripped off and resurfaced with new species of green turf as trial plots. Two new species of turf were planted; they are Trinity Zoysia and Primo Zoysia. Both species are the latest in the turf market with high potential.
The plots were set up to evaluate the performance of the new turf species for future upgrade of the greens. The Club will monitor the agronomic qualities and also gather feedback from golfers on play perspective. The new resurfaced greens are expected to be open by year-end.Various cultural practices were carried out on the greens to improve playability.

GET THE MAXIMUM SPIN ANDSTOP FROM YOUR WEDGESDo you want to golf like a pro and get your golf ball to stop as fast as possible? The condition of your golf wedge is very important. To achieve the maximum spin and stop in your golf game, follow these simple guidelines and you are on your way to a better game!

You will not have much chance of stopping the ball if the faces of your golf wedges look like this. Grooves are not there for creating spin. Their job is to
clear incidental grass that can interfere with the quality of grip (friction) created when the club face meets the golf ball. The grooves on your wedge have a similar purpose as the grooves on your car’s tyres.
Your club should look dry and clean like this!To maximise the spin created by your club, keep the club face dry and clean as the surface between the grooves is what comes in contact with the golf ball. Always keep a brush and a dry cloth handy.
Follow the tips above and watch as your golf balls FIZZ and STOP with ease on the greens!
Clearing grass and dirt from the grooves may help a little.

OCC JUNIOR DRIVE CHIP AND PUTT CHALLENGE
Saturday,10 November 2018
To engage and motivate our junior golfers, Golf Performance 360 (GP360) organised a Junior Drive Chip and Putt Challenge at the Driving Range in November 2018. Forty-two participants between ages 6 to 13 years old had their try at the drive, chip and putt stations. It was a fruitful day for the junior golfers as they honed their golfing skills and gained new knowledge in the game. It was heartening to see a good turnout, especially since it was the first of such events hosted by GP360. OCC will continue to work with our Golf Academy to provide a great learning platform and build an exciting junior programme for our junior golfers. A big Thank You to all for your support!
Guided by the golf professionals, participants gave their all during the challenges.

CHRISTMASLIGHT-UP
Christmas came early at OCC this year, with festivities getting into full swing at the Golf Clubhouse outside Vanda Terrace. Close to 100 members and guests came together for the Christmas celebration to join in exciting activities such as face painting, caricature drawing, photo booth, popcorn and candy floss giveaway, Christmas trivia quiz, as well as the launch of OCC Share-A-Gift project.
The night reached a frenzied peak with the appearance of Santa Claus and Santarina, who joined in for the Christmas tree light-up with Head of S&R / F&B, Cristo Fong, Head of Golf, Dennis Ee, and Head of Hotel, Gopal. Concluding the night with a heartwarming finale was a lively carolling performance by nEbO and U Live, who got the crowd singing along to Christmas songs and soaking in the joy of the season!

Eighty budding swimmers, from as young as four to as old as 11 years old, put on their swimming attire and participated in the 26th Super Sprint Series - Kids' Challenge. These promising young swimmers from five swim clubs kickstarted the race with the 20 metres Freestyle Kick and Breaststroke Kick as they dived into the pool with their kickboards. Proud parents clapped and cheered their children on from the sidelines as they raced across the pool with great determination. Despite the inclement weather that resulted in the swim meet being cancelled halfway through, the kids did not let the rain dampen their moods as they joined in with elation for the fun fringe activities at the annual Christmas Light-Up. Look out and sign up early for the 27th Super Sprint Series on 30 March 2019!

Then, members tried their hand at using seashells, pebbles, casuarina pines, and tree branches picked up at Singapore beaches to make exquisite crafts such as flowers, animals and unique cards. It was a really fun session as everyone had the chance to pick up a new skill and bring home their handmade nature treasures. Many thanks to Endre for sharing his creative ideas with everyone!

BOUQUETS
Bouquets ~ Our service compliments ~
Dear OCC Management team,
After all the event activities and excitement have died down,
on hindsight, they were successful and well planned out. We
are glad that we chose your venue.
On behalf of our church, I want to express our appreciation
to OCC for helping us make our church’s (Tabernacle of
Christ) 25th Anniversary memorable.
It was the good co-operation from Serene and her team that
made a difference. From the beginning of our liaison with
Serene, she was such a friendly and easy “go-to” person.
From her suggestions and experienced guidance, I was able
to plan the event smoothly and efficiently. For example,
even though it was the last two days before the event,
Serene helped us to arrange the “buggy” entrance without
difficulty. It helped make the event exciting like “icing on
the cake”.
On 15 Sept 2018, we booked our wedding dinner with OCC at its Sapphire Suite. We would like to specially compliment the Club for a few things and a few persons. Firstly, we are very grateful to Mr. Fabian (Sales Manager) for handling our wedding event. He is so committed to his job and we had so many last-minute changes that I had to keep disturbing him. He tried his best to accommodate every request we made and made sure our event went smoothly. To be honest, my wife and I were very happy with his service. I think OCC must be happy to have him as your sales manager. As the wedding is a big event that is once in our lifetime, we are very sure Mr. Fabian will handle every wedding event well. Once again, we would like to thank him so much and I hope OCC will be able to reward him as his service was excellent.
We would also like to thank another person – her name is Li Kim. She was really very helpful and ensured our wedding dinner guests were well taken care of.
My family and friends have given us very good reviews of OCC and also the banquet dinner was relatively good (Please help us to thank Peach Garden for their wonderful food).
We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped us during our wedding event.
Best Regards,Benny & Jerlves
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude to your hotel staff. I
stayed at the Orchid Lodge from 5 to 7 November 2018, taking up
seven rooms for my guests as well. The rooms are spacious, well-
furnished and clean. But the thing that made our stay even more
pleasant was the efficiency and attentiveness of your front office
staff.
I single out a lady named "Wawa". I'm sorry I did not get to ask
her full name. There is also another gentleman on duty at the
front office on the afternoons of 5 and 6 November whose name
I did not get. They were both very helpful. I was a little worried
about the administration of checking in for seven rooms, as I am
not a seasoned traveller. "Wawa" helped make the whole process
smooth and not chaotic as I had feared it would be. She helped to
manage my guests who came in at different times, and ensured that
they got to their rooms with little delay or fuss. She displayed good
temperament throughout and was very professional in approaching
her tasks.
On the evening of 7 November, after I had checked out, one of my
guests called me to say that she may have left her tablet PC behind
in the room. I called the front office and was attended to by a
gentleman named Edison. He was very reassuring and immediately
checked with the housekeeping staff. He called me back within
minutes with an update. It all ended well as my guest
eventually found the tablet in another bag.
I am most impressed by your team at Orchid
Lodge. They are a credit to your organisation.
Please convey my heartfelt gratitude to them.
Thank you.
Mr. Mohamed Fuad Abdul RahmanGuest
Thanks again, Serene, for your help, partnership and warm
friendship.
During the event’s lunch, we were served by banquet
manager, Miss Stephanie. Being attentive and with great
serving attitude, she was smiling and joyful all the time!
When one of our guests requested for two bowls of rice,
she ensured it was quickly served. Personally, I have been
to other restaurant’s lunches or dinners when they couldn’t
serve rice because it was simply unavailable. We really
appreciate her “no problem” attitude to go the extra mile.
So, thanks Stephanie, to you and your serving staff during
cocktail and lunch. Your willing and helpful service is what
we applaud and appreciate.
On the whole, we pray that God will continue to bless OCC
with more successful events and wonderful staff.
Thanks again with appreciation,
Christine CheaMember of TOC, Event Organiser
