By Michael Orser The SDCOS is having an auction (more to follow) instead of either of our regular meetings, so get ready for something new this month! We'll get things back to normal in January 2004. Now what's happened to December, you ask? Don't forget to check your SDCOS Board Meeting Reports from Romy Reyes near the back of this issue, for the Christmas Dinner. That's right! I said it and now I'll burn in politically correct hell, for not saying holiday instead of Christmas. Don't forget, December is the time of the year we get to be with our family and loved ones, so put on your smiles and have faith!. This will prove to be a warm and happy occasion for all! Notice from Lynn Ford There will not be a Novice meeting in November! The San Diego County Orchid Society will be holding their First Ever Orchid Auction. The Auction is slated to begin during our usual Novice meeting time – and we want you at the auction instead. This will be an excellent opportunity to buy some really fine orchid plants at minimum prices and to attend a fun event, even if you don’t want or need to purchase new plants. Call me if you want to help out. I will be collecting names (and phone numbers) of any member who would like to help by plant numbering, bidder registration, being runners and movers, and general go-for’s. My phone is 619.283.4172 / e-mail: [email protected] I want to thank our September speaker, David Brown, for an excellent and professional presentation on Miniature Orchids, and why he loves them. Although I was on vacation, David held the audience spellbound with his presentation and the beautifully colored orchid pictures. Then we had another outstanding presenter for our October meeting. Cora Ramborger showed us how to prepare our orchids for judging. And, I was happy to see several of our Novice Group members did bring their plants into the San Diego International Orchid Fair for judging and won ribbons! Please don’t forget the SDCOS Mini-Show on October 25 & 26. It costs nothing to enter – and it’s a great joy to win a ribbon for your Orchid. See you there. ORCHID AUCTION Tuesday, November 4th, 2003 By Ivan Harrison, Vice President As I hope all of you already know, the meeting will be replaced by our First Annual Orchid Auction, the proceeds from which will all go to benefit the Society. There are a number of things that we need everyone to know: ...continued on page 6

RumphiusOrchidsOrchid Texts from TheAmbonese Herbalby Georgius EverhardusRumphiusTranslation by E M BeekmanSubmitted by Rita Cietanno

Rumphius one of the greatest naturalists of the seventeenthcentury was the first to describe tropical orchids in a Westernlanguage This lovely book gathers and translates from Dutchinto English for the first time all the sections of Rumphiusrsquomonumental Ambonese Herbal that were devoted to orchidsThe volume includes illustrations notes and an informativeintroduction on the life of Rumphius

Rumphius (1627ndash1702) founder of Indonesian botanicalexploration and one of the greatest naturalists of the seventeenthcentury was the first to describe tropical orchids in a Westernlanguage Within the pages of his monumental seven-volumeAmbonese Herbal written in Dutch he included descriptionsof thirty-six species of orchids found on the island of Ambonin eastern Indonesia plus twelve uncertified ones His detaileddescriptions reflect both the accuracy of a scientist and thesensibility of a poet This lovely book is the first to gather andtranslate into English all the sections of Rumphiusrsquo TheAmbonese Herbal devoted to orchids

For each entry Rumphius describes the plant names it accordingto a pre-Linnaean system of nomenclature gives its localityand details its medicinal and non-medicinal uses More thantwenty beautiful line drawings accompany the entries

The detailed information Rumphius accumulated was of greatinterest to the Western world of his time which had scantknowledge of orchids His work continues to be of value andinterest today not only to botanists and orchid enthusiasts butalso to historians ethnobotanists and those who areinvestigating the value of biological diversity This volumeincludes ample notes to illuminate Rumphiusrsquo text and aninformative introduction that tells his storymdasha remarkablecollectornaturalist who overcame fire shipwreck and blindnessto produce his masterwork

Cattleya Growers of just about every level of expertise willhave begun to notice autumn conditions by now Days arebecoming shorter hence cooler the sunlight has less intensityas a result of the suns lowering angle nights are longer andgenerally cooler Plants are responding by slowing and ripeningtheir growth in preparation for winter

The first cultural change noticed should be a reduced frequencyof watering as the plants dry out more slowly This is afunction of both the reduced day length and lowertemperatures as well as the plants slowing growth rateReduced water needs signal a reduced need for fertilizationNote that the key word is reduced not eliminated Feed lessfrequently and at lower dosage but feed Growths madeduring summers heat and relatively soft and green will beripening -- hardening -- in preparation for a brief period of rest(in many cases)

Many of these ripening growths will have a sheath presagingthe coming winter or spring flowering season In some casesthese sheaths will have been evident since as early as July (Earlysheath development does not mean early flowering on plantswith winter-spring seasons) You may notice that some of thesesheaths are showing signs of yellowing This is not abnormalAutumns more pronounced temperature fluctuation can leadto water condensation inside the sheath hastening the normalprocess of senescence so yellowing sheaths can be left on theplant only so long before they must be carefully removed topreserve the bud primordia within Water condensation leftunchecked can rot the bud primordia The sheaths can besafely removed by slitting open and peeling down toward thepseudobulb

Cool-Growing Orchids One can almost hear a sigh of relieffrom all of the cool-growers from masdevallias toodontoglossums As day temperatures decline one can see anoticable improvement in these plants Shorter days and lowerlight levels do not seem to bother them Repot before winterarrives

Cymbidium Finally we begin in earnest the main cycmbidiumseason Cymbidium ensifolium can give some early andfragrant hybrids but it is now that the bulk of the crop will beflowering The season lasts for about seven months addingcolor to any collection Miniature varieties will peak for thenext three to four months There are three important thingsto do stake inflorescences ramrod straight for bestpresentation watch for slugs and snails (especially just after arain) and fertilize with a mild balanced formula regularly

Oncidium crispum Complex This is the season for plants inOncidium section crispum from Brazil to shine Extremelyvigorous hybrids come in wide varieties of markings dominated

Paphiopedilum The flowering season for the toads orbulldog paphs is just getting underway These cannot begrown everywhere but where cooler summer nights allowtheir growth there is no longer-lasting or more exotic displaythan these Paphiopedilums are in general not heavy feedersand it is especially important with this type to reduce nitrogenlevels now for best flowering and spike length Be watchfulfor water accumulating in the growth around the sheath orfor the late-season warm spell either of which can lead tothe sheaths rotting As the spikes emerge do not changethe orientation of the plant toward the light as this can leadto a crooked or twisted spikeWhile paphiopedilums rarely like to dry out entirely waterneeds are significantly reduced beginning now Overwateringat this time of year can quickly lead to root rot or erwiniaproblems Now is the time to practice good sanitary practicesin your greenhouse or growing areas as pest and diseaseproblems have a way of multiplying rapidly in the darkerand more crowded conditions that generally mark the wintergrowing area With paphiopedilums especially cleanlinessis next to godliness and if the growing area is littered withold foliage weeds and dying flowers keeping the plantsalive and flowering will be next to impossible

Phalaenopsis Shortening days and cooler nights are the signalsfor inflorescence initiation in phalaenopsis In more northernclimates or on the west coast growers have already begun tosee the early inflorescences that may be ready for ChristmasIn the eastern areas nights in the greenhouse will now be inthe low to mid 60s depending on the thermostat setting sothe first of our phalaenopsis will not begin to bloom untilValentines Day at the earliestA reduction in nitrogen levels will go a long way to giving thebest possible spiking as will a boost in potassium andphosphorus In other words a bloom booster-type fertilizeris definitely indicated in the next few months Disease andpest problems are best dealt with now especially as mealybugshide in the bracts and flower buds Once they have establishedthemselves they are difficult to eradicate and flower damageor crippling results Potential disease problems can be dealtwith by the application of a copper-based compound tocontrolalleviate rot problems before they start There isnothing more frustrating than to have shepherded your plantsthrough a growing season only to have them decline beforeyour eyes

Vandaceous Genera Whereas the general decline intemperatures is beneficial to cool-growing orchids it is notfor vandaceous plants The only cold-hardy member isNeofinetia falcata Orient your plants in such a way as to takeadvantage of as much light as possible This can be a problemin northern latitudes Reduce watering and feeding schedules

Oncidium crispum Complex This is the season for plants inOncidium section crispum from Brazil to shine Extremelyvigorous hybrids come in wide varieties of markings dominated

with chestnut and brown and butter yellow Give plantshigh light to produce strong upright inflorescences Thepseudobulbs should be plump so do not let the plants dryout while they are in bloom Later plants will enter a dormantperiod

Oncidium crispum Complex This is the season for plants inOncidium section crispum from Brazil to shine Extremelyvigorous hybrids come in wide varieties of markings dominated

with chestnut and brown and butter yellow Give plantshigh light to produce strong upright inflorescences Thepseudobulbs should be plump so do not let the plants dryout while they are in bloom Later plants will enter a dormantperiod

Vice Presidentrsquos Reportby Ivan Harrison

It was encouraging to see so many SDCOS members atthe Show Committee meeting in October We had a longbut fruitful meeting and made significant progress in severalareas However since the Show meeting ran so long therewas insufficient time to consider the submissions fordepiction of the Show Theme ldquoOrchids California StylerdquoIt was therefore decided to extend the timeframe for entriesfor another month Please contact any Board member withyour photograph sketch or painting as soon as possible toarrange receipt of the artwork

Otherwise you can bring them to the November GeneralMeeting (Auction) on Tuesday the fourth or to the nextShow Committee meeting at 700 pm on TuesdayNovember 11th That meeting will be held in the SeniorCenter next to Room 104 in Casa Del Prado BalboaPark A decision will be made at that time as artwork hasto be readied immediately for advertising purposes All thosepresent can partake in the selection process so you areencouraged to attend even if you do not have a submission

Cymbidium Finally we begin in earnest the main cycmbidiumseason Cymbidium ensifolium can give some early andfragrant hybrids but it is now that the bulk of the crop will beflowering The season lasts for about seven months addingcolor to any collection Miniature varieties will peak for thenext three to four months There are three important thingsto do stake inflorescences ramrod straight for bestpresentation watch for slugs and snails (especially just after arain) and fertilize with a mild balanced formula regularly

with chestnut and brown and butter yellow Give plantshigh light to produce strong upright inflorescences Thepseudobulbs should be plump so do not let the plants dryout while they are in bloom Later plants will enter a dormantperiod

Cymbidium Finally we begin in earnest the main cycmbidiumseason Cymbidium ensifolium can give some early andfragrant hybrids but it is now that the bulk of the crop will beflowering The season lasts for about seven months addingcolor to any collection Miniature varieties will peak for thenext three to four months There are three important thingsto do stake inflorescences ramrod straight for bestpresentation watch for slugs and snails (especially just after arain) and fertilize with a mild balanced formula regularly

with chestnut and brown and butter yellow Give plantshigh light to produce strong upright inflorescences Thepseudobulbs should be plump so do not let the plants dryout while they are in bloom Later plants will enter a dormantperiod
