Growing Power Demand in India –Solar or Coal?

Copyright of Havells India Limited

• India’s electricity requirement seen soaring 37% in 5 years

• Expected peak demand is to reach 226GW by FY 22 from expected 199.5GW in FY17

•Existing dependence on scarce fossil fuels poses challenge to our power generation demand

Growing power demand

•Land degradation , waste disposal , dumping of fly ash, destruction of soil

•Challenges associated with coal have led to reduction in output and plant load factor of coal fired power plants from 80% in 2007-08 to 69% in 2012-13

•This has affected industries as there is dependence on diesel generators further degrading the environment and increasing energy charges

Concerns with coal based power infrastructure

•India receives good sunshine for 300 days

•The solar equipment costs is declining substantially in last few years

•The cost multiple between coal and solar has reduced from 1:7 in 2011 to 1:1.8 in 2013, a drop of about 70% and is further going down by 201-16

Global Solar Revolution – India Key Market

Copyright of Havells India Limited

Average cost of electricity in India has been on rise YOY for Industries and commercial

On the other hand the price of Solar panels and subsequently project costs have dropped drastically over the years globally

This has helped India to reach installation base of approx. 5.8 GW by end of 2016 with 3GW under installation

The trend mirrors global trends where drop in solar panels and subsequent drop in price of solar projects have increased the installation based over the years

Solar In India – A Growing Industry

LCOE for solar power roof top plant comes under INR 2/ unit

Its calculated by dividing the net present value of all costs associated + initial investment by units of electricity generated over 25 years

Assumptions : 1500 units per Kw per year Cost of capital -11% 1% annual decline in solar energy generation

due to panel degradation Annual Maintenance cost at 1.5 % of initial

investment with 3% annual escalation

Government Focus on Solar Roof Top

Net Metering is followed in most States - Billing system that allows rooftop owners having solar system installed at their rooftop to sell any excess electricity generated from solar system to local electricity utility. This is settled either half yearly or annually.

Haryana has mandated solar roof top for commercial / industrial establishments -3% of power from Solar for connected load 50Kw or above Other states are expected to follow the mechanism In Punjab and Rajasthan industrial / commercial establishment are exempted from Wheeling and Cross subsidy surcharges

Why Roof Top Solar ?

Proven and Safe Technology

• Proven technology for over 25 yrs to work under all environmental conditions

• Functions only when there is constant electricity

• Safe-When the electricity is cut off the inverter switches off , a feature called anti islanding

• Solar panels are backed by manufacturer warranty for 25 yr. System warranty is about 5 yrs

• Compatibility - The system can be synced with diesel generator also with automatic programming to ensure the roof top generation doesn’t exceed DG capacity

Easy to install and Maintain

• 1KW system occupies 100sqt of space

• Time line required- for 100KW system can be installed in 15 days time period

• The accessories –Inverters & DBs can be mounted on walls. No dedicated room required

• All accessories are IP rated to protect from external environment

• Galvanized structure or non corrosive aluminum structures are used

• Easy to maintain the system with existing labor and systems

Utilization of Any Type of Existing Roof

• Utilization of idle roof for saving electricity and money

• Solar installations provide good heat insulation to roofs especially for tin sheds in industries

• All type of roofs can be used – Flat / Slant-Tin shed / Parking area –Carport

• Proper safety measures like walkway, hand rails can be installed along with structures

• The load on roof- tin shed is around 25kgs/ sq mtr and flat roof is 40 kgs/ sq mtr

Roof Top Solar – The Process

Copyright of Havells India Limited

•Industries can apply net metering application to their local Discom

•In most states the allowance for solar roof top capacity is 80-90% of connected load

•The sanction letter process time is typically between one to two months

•The process can be parallel to procurement process for On grid supply and installation

Net Metering Application

•The service provider takes complete site survey of the roof

•Direction of roof , type of roof , location of LT panel , place to keep inverters and site orientation is noted

• Detailed array layout is made by service provider , placing all panels on roof

•Detailed cabling is designed to ensure optimum size and length of cables are used

•PVSYST report- a 3D modelling is done using historical data from the specific geography using climatic data coefficients to determine generation of plant

•Detailed offer along with supply and installation charges is submitted

Procurement Process

•Material delivery at customer site typically takes about 3-4 weeks from date of order

•First the structures are installed, then the panels are placed , wiring and cabling is connected to LT to power up the system

•The entire process typically for 100KW system takes about 15 days

Installation

•Once the installation is done the local department for renewable energy along with discom checks the system

•The sign off letter from renewable department to discom is given

•Post which the net metering sanction is given

•The entire process typically takes about two months of time

at INR 20/unit

Increase in cesson power trading

+ Renewable energy certificate

cost at INR 1.5/unit

Financial Benefits

Challenges with Solar Power

Copyright of Havells India Limited

Orientation

• The sun irradiation is maximum in south direction , the installation is specifically done in southern direction to generate maximum energy

• Roof orientation is not always in southern side

Efficiency

• The efficiency of solar panels drops significantly even when a small portion is blocked by dust / shadow/ soiling

• The voltage drop in one solar panel effects a series of 20-25 solar panels reducing the energy generation for entire system

Maintenance

• The information regarding each and every solar panel is not available

• In larger installations system down time is higher since the fault is identified at site using physical processes and systems . This leads to loss of revenue

Assurance

• No technology to track performance of solar panels for 25 years

• Solar installations with current technology cannot be upgraded with future panel technologies
