It was wonderful to see members at our annual Chinese New Year Lo-Hei at AA@51AMK this year. May the Year of the Dog bring you good health and fortune!

Recently, there have been reports of fatal accidents among Singaporeans driving overseas. The Association recognises the need to step up its efforts to educate members and the public on how to be better road-prepared while enjoying an incident-free holiday. As such, we will be organising the Overseas Safe Driving Forum 2018 on 17 March at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre. Do join us, especially if you plan to drive overseas. Register your interest at www.aas.com.sg/osdf2018.

Speaking of road safety, we should never forget that children are more vulnerable than adults on roads and in cars. On page 18, a child safety expert shares tips on how to encourage reluctant kids to stay still in their child restraints.

I am pleased to announce that AAS Insurance Agency (AAS-IA) will be offering a new Commercial Insurance. This initiative offers protection to business owners who run

that winners of our Holly Jolly Xmas and 110th Anniversary Grand Lucky Draw for 2017 are listed on page 12 — congratulations to the lucky members, who won themselves exciting prizes and up to $500 worth of shopping vouchers.

Our 2017 Autoventure Ambassador has returned from her 6D5N trip to Penang and Hat Yai. Besides reading on page 22 her memories of the trip, you can watch her video on our AA YouTube channel (scan the QR code on page 23).

Given the volatile changes in our weather, I advise members to exercise caution when driving on the roads.

As always, have a safe drive.

EDITOR’S NOTE

So you know the difference between a sedan and a hatchback — that’s basic stuff. Now, do you know what’s the difference between a SUV and a crossover vehicle?

As explained in this issue’s Review (page 31), crossovers are “built on a car’s unibody architecture”, while SUVs “use a body-on-frame structure that links independent pieces together”. The section

covers three impressive crossover models by Subaru, Nissan and Citroën respectively — you will be tempted to request a test drive!

While behind the wheels, do you sometimes wonder how our street names came to be? If you work in the CBD, do you wonder who Shenton Way was named after? And since when did Singapore grow enough lavender to have a thoroughfare

of featuring a location that will be visited in the future by our Autoventure tours. Turn to page 38 for some insights into the east coast of Taiwan, which features exciting drives through spectacular landscapes. Speaking of Autoventures, we recently chatted with the programme’s latest ambassador, 23-year-old undergraduate Chang Jie Lin. Flip to In Person on page 22 to check out the interview.

Common violations uncovered after investigation into these incidents include the lack of

AAS Academy’s MORRTM Review is ideal for companies

AAS ACADEMY CAN HELPHere’s where AAS Academy comes in. It runs the Managing Occupational Road Risks (MORRTM) Review, which can help companies comprehensively audit their

recommendations that can lower risks and costs. But beyond saving money, it’s about saving lives.

The process involves reviewing the company’s existing framework and practices to identify potential risks so that measures can be implemented before accidents and mistakes occur. All factors are measured against international best practices.

Companies that have undergone a MORRTM Review will be able to implement a more effective vehicle safety policy as well as a detailed action plan to reduce service disruptions while keeping employees safe.

Some of the common problems that could occur include:• The seals on the shock absorber

becoming brittle and torn,

• The shock absorber becoming bent or damaged from an impact, causing leakage

• Small parts within the shock absorber wearing out or getting damaged by impact over time

THE STAFF OF A WORKSHOP TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT LEFT SUSPENSION OF MY CAR WAS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED — HE RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACE ALL FOUR. HOW CAN THE SUSPENSION LEAK? WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND WHY DO I HAVE TO REPLACE ALL FOUR?

• Replace windshield wipers that leave streaks

• Ensure all headlights, tail lights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning

following measures to stay safe:• Drive at a lower speed as it

takes a longer time to adjust your speed in wet weather; it also reduces the chances of aquaplaning and skidding

• Do not use cruise control • To prevent hydroplaning, avoid

making hard brakes, sudden accelerations and sharp turns

Shock absorbers are usually replaced in pairs, either at the front or rear. Replacing them in pairs prevents any imbalance between the shock absorbers, which can be hazardous.

It is not necessary to replace all four at the same time unless there is a defect in the shock absorber or the vehicle’s mileage has exceeded/is approaching the mileage recommended by the car manufacturer for replacement. We suggest that you clarify why the workshop staff feels all four need to be replaced.

• Drive with your headlights on low beam, which makes it easier to see under foggy conditions

• Keep your windscreen clear of condensation by activating the demister

• Allow for ample stopping distance by doubling your usual following distance (keep your following distance to at least four seconds)

• Slow down earlier than usual when approaching intersections, turns,

HELP! MY KIDS HATE THEIR CAR SEATS!

Ensuring that kids use car seats, even when they don’t want to,

SAFETY MATTERS

CONTRIBUTED BY EL ISE M AWSON

How can we support and encourage reluctant children who — often loudly and passionately —

resist being strapped into their car seats?

is that all children will resist their car seats at some point. Strapping them into a car seat severely limits their range of movement. Because it is instinctive for children to move and explore their environment,

against their car seats. “My kid cries in her car seat” isn’t a reason not to use one.

When kids resist their car seats, even as babies, their reactions can be extreme, from blood-curdling screams to violent outbursts. As parents, we need to expect these reactions; more importantly, we need to respect these reactions. Once you’ve checked that the harness isn’t actually pinching your child (more on that later), his screams and cries don’t necessarily mean he is in pain, or even that he’s uncomfortable. More often than not, their extreme reactions are because they don’t want to be strapped into the car seat at that moment. They’re vehemently disagreeing with your decision to strap them into their car seat right here, right now. It’s healthy for children to be allowed, even encouraged, to express their feelings and voice their objections — car seat objections are no exception.

19H I G H W A Y

After we’ve expected, respected and acknowledged their feelings, there is a lot that we can do to help our kids when they resist their car seats.

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECTGive your kids fair warning: in 15 minutes, they’ll need to hop in their car seat. When it comes to actually buckling them in, give them a play-by-play: “It’s time to sit in your car seat”, “I’m going to pick you up and put you in your car seat”. Even if your child isn’t able to talk yet, he understands a huge amount of what you say and can respond to it. When a child predicts an event that comes true, their brains respond positively. So it helps when they ‘predict’ the buckle closing, then hear or see it close.

MAKE SURE THE CAR SEAT FITS THEM PROPERLYSome kids are genuinely uncomfortable in car seats, particularly if there is a lot of padding, especially around the face; this can make them feel hot or trigger sensory discomfort. Sometimes, they feel uncomfortable if the seat is severely reclined and they prefer to sit more upright. In this case, consider moving up to the next-stage child restraint — if it’s safe and appropriate to do so.

Regardless of the product used, it’s important to ensure that the harness is properly tightened — too tight can cause discomfort and too loose is both unsafe and unsettling for children who don’t like the ambiguity of being able to move a bit, but not as much as they want to. Harnesses should be as snug as a hug. If you can pinch the strap of the harness onto itself, then it’s too loose; if you can’t comfortably

shoulder and the harness, then it’s too tight. More often than not, our kids’ harnesses are too loose.

Another consideration is whether the child restraint is appropriate for your child’s nature.

If you have a very active, wriggly child, then a car seat with an in-built harness that can be tightened may be easier for both of you to manage than a booster seat, which relies solely on the movable adult seat belt.

SET FIRM LIMITS AND STICK TO THEMIt’s important that, from here on out, our kids use their car seats for every single journey. Our insistence helps them know their boundaries; even if they resist and test those boundaries, they feel safe and secure when we reinforce them.

If you’re going back to using a car seat after a period without

one, then expect that both you and your child will have a period of adjustment to the new way of the world. We often underestimate the impact our change in mindset will have on ourselves.

AS A LAST RESORT, DISTRACT DISTRACT DISTRACTDistraction often has some immediately soothing results. Consider directing your child’s attention to soft toys or cartoons on your mobile phone. Keep in mind, though, that any item in a vehicle that is not secured can become a dangerous projectile in a car accident, so soft toys are a safer choice than plastic or wooden ones.

SPICK & SPAN

Cleaning your car regularly keeps it in excellent condition and protects its resale value. Basic washing

For my recent trip to Penang and Hat Yai, we faced the weekend crowd after crossing the Thai border on the way to Makro. So our expedition leader took us down side streets, avoiding the main roads and, before we knew it, we had arrived. I felt well taken care of — thanks to the group personal accident insurance, walkie talkies to communicate between cars, and the presence of a recovery team in case of breakdowns — and was not worried about getting lost at all.

With the launch of BlueSG, it seems like Singapore is ready to embrace the use of electric vehicles. But is the local infrastructure ready to accept EVs as a way of life? What else needs to be done?

WOR DS J O N W H I T E

Petrol-reliant cars may soon disappear.

Australia is constructing a superhighway that offers

free charging stations to boost the use of electric vehicles (EVs). Both France and the United Kingdom will ban the sale of fuel-reliant cars by 2040. By the middle of this century, it is estimated that half the cars in the world will be battery-powered.

In Singapore, the number of electric cars has increased from

F E A T U R E

12 at the end of 2016 to 93 by November 2017 — that’s roughly an eight-fold jump within the span of a year. As of December last year, electric cars have turned the corner from being a curious product to an available car-sharing option for Singapore families. However, how ready is Singapore for EVs?

INFRASTRUCTURE PREPAREDNESSAs you can imagine, drivers worry a lot about charging: where are the

available charging points, and how long will it take? What should they do if the car dies midway? A new phrase — range anxiety — has been coined to describe the fear that an EV will run out of juice before it reaches a charging station.

This fear isn’t unfounded. According to BlueSG, the operator behind Singapore’s electric car sharing scheme, their electric cars can run for about 200km between charges. This is a third of what regular cars can do on a full tank.

IS SINGAPORE EV-READY?

Times. “Getting this right is crucial if we are to rev up the number of EVs in use because of the ‘chicken or egg’ problem — while car growth drives infrastructure deployment,

in stunted growth.” A wider distribution of fast chargers, Kuttan insists, will go a long way to encourage people to switch to EVs.

Presently, Singapore’s plan is to combine new business models with infrastructure deployment. While this mode of distribution of charging stations makes sense for businesses, this is also likely to limit the growth of the network of chargers.

EASE OF FINDING CHARGING STATIONS To help drivers locate and get to charging stations quickly, Kuttan suggests leveraging on a smart system to easily locate

All over the world, including here in Singapore, the barriers that are hampering the electric car’s popularity include the availability of charging stations, the right car-to-charger ratio and good driver etiquette.

A WIDER NETWORK OF CHARGING POINTSTo encourage wider adoption of EVs, Sanjay Kuttan, programme director of Nanyang Technological University’s Energy Research Institute and chairman of the Sustainable Infrastructure Committee, urges the authorities to look into the right ratio of charging stations per EV. For instance, it’s 2.99 in Germany and 14.10 in Norway.

balance, taking into account local conditions,” he opines to The Straits

charging stations. The system would also enable drivers to check for available slots and make reservations. This, he believes, will optimise the utilisation of the charging infrastructure and make electric cars more attractive.

Another proposal was to co-locate charging points at petrol stations, which are already strategically sited along popular routes. This would naturally provide the highest level of accessibility to charging stations. In countries such as Russia, for instance, it is mandatory for petrol stations to install EV-charging points.

SMART BILLING SYSTEMSAnother challenge highlighted is the availability of parking spots for EVs. How can we encourage car park owners to set aside lots for

30 H I G H W A Y

EVs, which aren’t quite prevalent at the moment? He suggests possible solutions such as charging for the sale of electricity on top of the usual parking charges through a smart billing system. Besides car parks, these fees could also apply to roadside parking. London, for example, is experimenting with providing low-cost kerbside charging by enabling streetlights to double up as charging points.

USER ETIQUETTE Considering the limited charging facilities at the moment, user etiquette naturally becomes critical. It was suggested that each time EVs are charged, drivers can be alerted of the estimated charge time remaining through the smart system. This would prompt the driver to vacate the charging space in a timely manner and thus prevent overstaying. A tiered pricing system could also be implemented to optimise the use of these facilities by ensuring that drivers pay more for their overstay.

SUPPORTIVE POLICIESThe EV Association of Singapore, which grew out of a Facebook interest group, has been active in providing the government with perspectives on how policies

affect electro-mobility. In an interview with The Straits Times, the group’s president, Mr Terence Siew, considers the Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) a small step in the right direction. Electric cars are expected to qualify for a $20,000 rebate under the scheme, which provides rebates or surcharges based on a vehicle’s emissions. Members of the association, however, remain hopeful that the buying process would continue to be eased, especially when consumers are beginning to want EVs.

LOOKING AHEAD Getting Singaporeans to make the switch will not be a walk in the

park, especially when governments around the world are facing the classic chicken-or-egg problem in the electric car market: do cars or

Singapore’s push for greener transport, however, remains clear. The Land Transport Authority, for instance, will be rolling out 50 diesel-electric hybrid buses in 2018 as part of its efforts to make public buses here more environmentally friendly. A separate tender has been called for electric buses, which may hit the roads as soon as 2019.

By pushing ahead, planning well and leveraging smart technology, range anxiety may become a thing of the past sooner than expected.

DID YOU KNOW? to hit Singapore’s roads was a Tesla imported by Joe Nguyen in July 2015. When he found out that he would be slapped with a tax surcharge of $15,000 (for the car’s carbon emission), he naturally protested. Despite the red tape, Nguyen believes the trouble he went through was worth it when he was given the green light in February 2016.

Since October 2016, two more Teslas (an S P90 and an S P85D) have made their way to our sunny shores. The American automaker has also started taking orders for Tesla 3, a new model designed for the masses. These hotly anticipated wheels are expected to hit our streets in 2018.

Engine technology is the key focus in the new Citroën C4 Cactus. The PureTech petrol engine, named 2017 Engine of the Year in its category for the third consecutive year, now comes with six-speed automatic transmission. With 120 patents to its name, the three-cylinder Turbo PureTech petrol engine cuts fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 18% compared with its four-cylinder petrol predecessor.

Recognising that driver experience is just as important as performance, the new C4 features a range of driving aids selected to make life easier. The reverse camera makes parking manoeuvres a breeze with the image displayed on a touchscreen. Hill Start Assist ensures smooth and safe starts on slopes every time. Furthermore, front fog lights with cornering function improve visibility and safety at corners and junctions.

The cockpit has also received a makeover. The low dashboard’s horizontal lines create more space for the front passenger, with generous, easily accessible storage obtained by adopting a fully digital interface and optimising the driving position layout. The passenger airbag has been transferred to the roof and deployed over the length of the windscreen, rather than in the dashboard. Ergonomic improvement comes from replacing control buttons with a seven-inch touchscreen that groups all vehicle functions (air conditioning, media, navigation, parameters, telephone, connected services and driving aids).
