ost-World War II, 1948 was a good year in the United States. One of the most memorable events was the surprise reelection of Harry S. Truman; against the predictions of the press, he beat the odds. Also in that year,
Ed & Mary Ellen Hallock founded Construction Specialties in Newark, NJ, as a manufacturer’s representative firm. They
also defied the odds. The business they started has become a global leader in architectural and engineered products.

étente isn’t just for politicians. Ed Hallock, the founder of Construction Specialties, was on the first commercial flight from the US to China after
Richard Nixon’s historic trip to open the Bamboo Curtain. As a gesture of
goodwill, Mr. Hallock brought the first set of Sweets Architectural Files ever on
that continent and made a gift of them to the University of Beijing’s School of
Architecture. Today, a C/S operation can be found in most industrialized nations.

hose words, penned over one hundred years ago by the famous American naturalist John J. Audubon, have never been more true. They
capture the spirit of our environmental policy at C/S—a policy that drives our
profound commitment to create products that will contribute to lowering the
environmental impact on every building they become a part of. But that’s
only the beginning; that mindset drives every decision we make about how we
run our business. We understand that we are only temporary stewards of this
planet. Our future generations will have to live with decisions we make today.

efore Thomas Edison, the process of inventing was a solitary pursuit. Edison, the world’s most prolific inventor, also invented the modern process
for inventing. He brought together the best minds he could find to work as a team
to help develop and refine each other’s ideas. They would work diligently, never
letting failure stop them from achieving their goals. That spirit lives on at C/S. Our
talented designers and engineers not only work together, but also with architects
and builders to help refine their good ideas. This culture of collaboration™ has
led to many breakthroughs. Construction Specialties holds over 350 patents
worldwide. Let’s work together to make buildings better.

ike all great chief executives, Ronald Reagan knew thatthe most effective way to run the country was to find people
in each individual discipline who knew more than he did. He also
gave them the support they needed to succeed. Our philosophy
at C/S is to find the best and brightest and let them soar. Our culture
of collaboration™ encourages not only working together and learning
from our customers, but also from our coworkers. It has developed
into a powerful mentoring program that fuels each employee’s
personal growth and is grooming our next generation of leaders.
