INTRODUCTION
Electricity was generated for the first time in Aizawl in December 1962 using
a 75 kW DG set. The State’s generation capacity was 145 kW prior to the formation
of Union Territory in 1972.Power & Electricity Department became a full-fledged
Department in 1983 headed by a Chief Engineer and subsequently in 2008,the post
of Engineer-in-Chief was created to head the Department.
The Department is now functioning as an integrated utility unit for generation,
transmission and distribution of power within the state of Mizoram. The Department
is also responsible for maintenance of power distribution network to cater quality
power supply to its consumers. The administrative head of the Department is the
Secretary(Power) to the Govt. of Mizoram whereas the Engineer-in-Chief is the
head of the Department in running its affairs. The Engineer-in Chief is assisted by
Chief Engineer(RE) and Chief Engineer(Civil) in his office, 2(two) field Chief
Engineers supported by 19(nineteen) Superintending Engineers in 9(nine) working
Circles, 21(twenty one) Executive Engineers and 52 (fifty-two) Sub-Divisional
Officers and associated staff working round the clock to ensure 24x7 power supply
to the 259961 consumers.
The Department also has given priority for generation of power from the
State’s available huge potential and shifted the headquarters of the Executive Engineer,
Serlui’B’Project Division and its associated Sub-Divisions to Ngopa and renamed
as the Executive Engineer, Hydel Division and 2(two) Sub-Divisions execute
construction of Kawlbem Small Hydro Project(2x2 MW).
The State’s requirement of power is 201MW (as per 18th Electric Power
Survey) whereas the allocated share is 152.89 MW against a Peak demand of 110MW.
This is excluding State owned Hydel Stations (29.35MW) and Tuirial HEP (60MW)
which was not reflected in e-Book 2019-20.
The State is dependent on the outside sources for its energy requirement and
mainly through Central Sector Generating Stations (CSGS) from North Eastern
Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation
Limited (NHPC), National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), ONGC

Tripura Power Company Limited (ONGC) and a combined project from Baramura
IV&V (Tripura, Manipur & Mizoram). The daily drawal power requirement of 24
hrs in 15 minutes block based on actual demand of State is sent daily by State Load
Dispatch Centre (SLDC), Mizoram to North Eastern Regional Load Dispatch Centre
(NERLDC), Shillong.
The Department looks after the following assets as on 31st March, 2020 and

POWER SOURCES FOR MIZORAM
A. CENTRAL GENERATING STATIONS
Mizoram power generation is not sufficient to meet her needs and
the State’s power deficit is supplemented from various Central Sector
Generating Stations. Table below shows the percentage and MW sharing
of Mizoram from Central Generating Stations as on April 2020 :-

B. STATE OWN GENERATION
Mizoram has 11 nos Hydel Generation Stations with installed capacity
of 29.35MW and these stations generate arround 40MU annually. Table
below shows the Generating Station in Mizoram with their installed
capacity.

Table below shows the peak and off-peak demand and power drawal during 2019-20.
TABLE : Abstract of Local Generation during 2019-20
Mizoram generates 51.118 MU of energy during 2019-20 from its owned Generating
Stations which is 27% higher than the previous year. Table below shows the total monthly
local generation of electricity in Mizoram during 2019-20.

POWER PURCHASE
Mizoram has purchased about 95% of her total power requirement from different
generating stations. During 2019-20 the total power purchase bill to be borne by Mizoram
is Rs 329.87 crore. Monthly power purchase cost from all Central Generating Stations
including transmission charges, etc. is shown in the table below:-
