A Friend from A gentina
La t summer, sixt en-year-old Javier Torton
left hi par nt , hi ninet n-y r-old broth r, his
friends, and hi hometown of n Franc! co, Argen
tina, to come to th United an excb e
student. Javi r has lived ith a number of families
in the Triple Cities, and i pre ntly re idin at the
home of 1r. and 1rs. John Les o, hos son Ray is
an exch nge student from our chool to Bolivia.
Registered as a enior in our school, Javier takes
courses in chemistry, ocial studie , English, typ
in , and chorus.
Back in Argentina, Javier as also a enior in high
chool. There h took eleven ubjects and all these
were pre cribed by the chool officials-that is, h
had no choice to bat ubject b took. Becau e
high school tudent attend school only in the morning
in Argentina, Javier g n rally man eel to have only
two or three clas es of each subject per week. One
of the bi ge t difference between our daily high
Engli b very fluently now and i ble to pre nt his
id v ry well.
Perb p th bigge t difference th t Javier can di -
tinguisb n teenag lif in the t te and in Ar-
gentina is in the hours that we stay out and tb hours
tb the and his fri nd tay out. Javi r s ys that it
is cu tomary for dance to begin at around eleven
o'clock at night and to end t bout four o'clock in th
mornin at borne; here they last from about eight or
nin o'clock until midnight. He al o s y that h
prefer parties back home to partie in the United
tates bee u e kid dane t p rti in Ar entina,
whil tb y don't usually do o her . Another differ
ence Javier notices i in the rate at which we do
thing . Ev rything i don o quickly in th tate
while in his homeland things are don more slowly.
On July 29, Javi r will return hom to hi f mily
and friend . He has had a \ onderful time in our
country, and I am sure it vill b an ex rience h
chool routine and Javier's b ck home is that the will n ver for et. We, too, ' ill never be able to
teachers rather than the tudent chan e cl sse in for et Javier's rm person lity and hi friendly Argentina.
Coming to the United ates didn't pre ent to Javier
his first experience ith th Engli h languag . He
had been studying the language for over five years,
smile. We urely will mls hi fine character and
h certainly is an exc 11 nt repre entativ of our
Latin-American neighbors to th south. It ha been
a gr at honor and plea ure for our student body and
three of them s an academic cour . Javier sp aks faculty to act as host to you, Javier Torton .
