Sri Lanka
• Survey in Aug 2020 among 2,800 households.
• Severe impacts on the poor, >50% respondents reporting primary income-earning member had lost their job, and 90% reporting that their July 2020 income was less than their pre-pandemic income.
• Households were forced to resort to a variety of coping strategies to meet basic needs, including reducing expenditures on health (62%) and non-food items like clothes and education (90%), and spending from their savings (76%).
• Food transfer programs more important than ever as a source for meeting basic food needs. But FFP program fell short: 64% of respondents receiving their full entitlement of 60 kg of rice in March-April.
• Factors: supply disruptions, movement restrictions, lack of proper info about eligibility conditions.

Sri Lanka
• Employment: • To address the sudden job losses, the government launched a new rural public works scheme in 116
districts across six states in the country. In 2020-21, the government also increased the allocation under National Rural Employment Scheme by S$7.3 billion.
• It is the primary anti-poverty vehicle of the government that ensures up to 100 days of paid work per year for adults.
• Nutrition:• The COVID-19 Rural Shock Survey across six states showed that 1/3 rural households had to
compromise on its food intake since the lockdown. To address the situation, the government has introduced a variety of relief packages, including the distribution of free rations and LPG cylinders, among others.
