TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 6 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
1. INTRODUCTION
In my bachelor’s thesis, I chose to tackle the translation of a book, even though I have never
considered doing translations. I read the book without thinking how much time the translator
must have spent looking for appropriate sentences. Every country is different thus a translator
has to be acquainted with it’s culture and habits.
The second reason why I chose this topic was because I was really keen on doing translations
correctly. For this reason, I chose the optional course of translating at our faculty which was
taught by Mgr. Martin Němec. We translated a book called Adrian Mole - the Wilderness
Years by Sue Townsend. I liked the book a lot because it is not compounded by serious
themes.
The third reason why I decided to handle this topic is because I read the version of the book,
which was translated by Helena Hartlová and I did not agree to her translation in some cases.
In the story, Adrian thinks he is one of the cleverest people, but he just a comical figure. In
her translation, Helena Hartlová uses the passive voice which is not so typical in Czech. In my
opinion, Adrian would not express himself in this way were he Czech. Czech usually uses the
passive voice in formal language but Adrian does not speak or write formally. Another point
is the fact that the translator does not make any asides for words which are typical for English,
but would not necessarily be understood by a Czech.

2. SUE TOWNSAND – THE AUTHOR OF ADRIAN MOLE: THE
CAPUCCINNO YEARS
Sue Townsend was born in Leicester in 1946. She left school at the age of 15 and worked in a
variety of jobs including factory worker and shop assistant. She got married when she was 18
and had three children. In 1999, she was diagnosed with diabetes and she slowly began losing
her sight. Today she is almost blind.
Her writing career started when she was 35. Her most famous and best known book is The
Secret Diary of Adrian Mole - a diary kept by a 13 year old boy. The book made her the best-
selling novelist of the 1980s. It has been followed by several more in the same series
including The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole, The True Confessions of Adrian Mole, Adrian
Mole: The Wilderness Years, Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years and Adrian Mole and the
Weapons of Mass Destruction. Due to her blindness, Townsend has confirmed that Adrian
Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction is the final book in the series. The books have
been adapted for radio, television and theatre. Sue Townsend also wrote the screenplays for
television adaptations of the first and second books.
The series has two main themes. The first books concentrate on Adrian's desires and
ambitions in life and his complete failure to achieve them. The second theme is depiction of
the social and political situation in Britain The two final books move in slightly new
directions, showing Adrian as an adult in different environments. They are more focused on
political satire, mainly examining the New Labour Party.

2.1 Adrian Mole – The Main Character
Adrian Albert Mole was born in 1967 and grew up with his parents in Leicester. Over several
books, he developed the script for a white van comedy serial killer programme, which the
BBC was reluctant to produce.
As a young man he moves to London and takes a job in a Soho restaurant working as a cook.
Adrian is persuaded to feature in a television cookery programme called The Fry-Up,
supposedly to be a celebrity chef.
Adrian it the father of three children: Glenn Bott-Mole, his son by Sharon Bott, whom Adrian
fancied at school and with who he had an affair as a young man, William Mole, his son by
his first wife JoJo, a Nigerian princess who later divorces Adrian and moves back home and
Gracie Mole, his daughter by his current wife Daisy, a smart, good-looking woman with
whom he enjoys great mutual attraction.
Pandora Braithwaite, the love of Adrian's life, plays a major role throughout the books. She is
beautiful and intelligent, and as teenagers they are happy together. Adrian tends to devote a
lot of his diary space to her, describing whichever of her current lovers and his flaws and he
pines for their lost love. Pandora becomes a rising star in the New Labour Party under Tony
Blair. 2)

Friday May 2nd Pátek, 2. května
At 6.14 a.m. I heard Ivan Braithwaite’s faulty
exhaust pipe turn into Wisteria Walk and
stop outside our house. (Together with the
rest of his car, obviously. I mean, obviously!)
I dragged myself off the sofa, peered through
a chink in the curtains and saw my mother
and Braithwaite in passionate conversation in
the front seats of the car. My mother was
drawing heavily on a cigarette. Braithwaite´s
eyes were half closed against the smoke.
Suddenly my mother yanked the car door
open. Braithwaite leaned across the gear
stick with an anguished look on his unshaven
chops. My mother ran round the back of the
car, then up the path without looking back. I
herd her keys scraping around the keyhole in
the front door. She has never, ever managed
to unlock a door in under three minutes, so I
put her out of her misery and opened it for
her. She looked shocked to see me.
V 6:14 jsem slyšel rachot děravýho výfuku
Ivana Braithwaita, kterej zatočil do Wisteria
Walk a zastavil před naším domem.
(Společně se zbytkem auta, samozřejmě.
Vždyť říkám, že je to samozřejmý!)
Vysoukal jsem se z pohovky, mrkl ze skuliny
mezi závěsy a viděl jsem matku, jak na
sedačkách v autě bouřlivě diskutuje
s Braithwaitem. Matka silně potahovala
z cigarety. Braithwait měl kvůli kouři napůl
zavřený oči. Matka jedním trhnutím otevřela
dveře. Braithwait se s úzkostným pohledem
na neoholené tváři naklonil přes řadící páku.
Matka oběhla zadek auta, běžela nahoru po
chodníku a zpátky se už nepodívala. Slyšel
jsem šramocení klíče kolem dírky u
vchodových dveří. Nikdy v životě se jí
nepodařilo odemknout dveře do tří minut.
Ukončil jsem její trápení a otevřel dveře.
Vyplašeně se na mě podívala.
I said, ‘What was gong on in the car?’ „O co v tom autě šlo?“ zeptal jsem se.
She took off her red jacket and hung it
over the back of a kitchen chair. The tops of
her arms looked pasty and saggy, as though
they’d been injected with a lumpy white
sauce. She said, ‘I’ve just had an argument
with Ivan…about, er…which Dimbleby gave
the best election coverage!’
Sundala si červený sako a pověsila ho
přes kuchyňskou židli. Její paže vypadaly
jako svěšený těsto s vstříknutým bílým
roztokem s hrudkama. „Jenom jsem měla
s Ivanem spor… o, hmm… který z Dimbleyů
měl nejlepší volební reportáž!“
It was an obvious lie. I said, ‘And which
Dimbleby did you favour?’ with some
sarcasm.
Byla to jasná lež. „A ke kterýmu
Dimblebyu ses klonila?“ řekl jsem
sarkasticky.
‘David!’ she answered, but she couldn’t „K Davidovi!“ odpověděla, ale

nedokázala se mi podívat do očí. Když šla do
postele, slyšel jsem zavrzání rámu. Potom už
bylo ticho.
I lay awake on the sofa and wondered if I
should intervene before my mother brought
yet another tragedy to our family. Trust her
to spoil my enjoyment of Labour’s victory.
What should have been a glorious new dawn
of optimism and a celebration of the
transcendence of all that is best in
humankind had been tainted by the potential
threat to the Moles’ and the Braithwates’
family units. And all because two late-
middle-aged-people have restless genitals.
Ležel jsem na pohovce a přemýšlel, jestli
bych měl zasáhnout ještě předtím, než začne
kvůli matce další rodinný neštěstí. Věřím, že
zničí mou radost z vítězství labouristů. Měl
to být začátek úžasnýho optimismu a oslava
veškerý dokonalosti lidstva. Všechno bylo
zničený Molovou a Braithwaitovou rodinou.
A to jenom kvůli tomu, že dva lidé středního
věku mají neklidný genitálie.
1 p.m. 13:00
The household slept late. It was Tania
Braithwaite who woke us by phoning and
asking if Ivan was at our house. Apparently
he hadn’t been home and his mobile was
switched off. My mother overheard my
feigned concern and snatched the phone off
me. While she cross-questioned Tania, I fed
the New Dog and William, and took a cup of
Nescafé up to my father. He was lying on his
side, facing the wall. His bald patch was still
decorated with black felt-tip scrawlings. As I
put the mug down on the bedside table, he
begged me to close the curtains against the
sunlight, which was flooding into the room.
Spali jsme dlouho. To Tania Braithwaitová
nás vzbudila telefonem. Ptala se, jestli je u
nás Ivan. Asi nebyl doma a měl vypnutej
mobil. Matka viděla můj předstíranej zájem a
vytrhla mi telefon. Vyptávala se Tanie jako
by byla u křížovýho výslechu. Já jsem zatím
nakrmil jsem Novýho psa, Williama a donesl
jsem otci hrníček s kávou. Ležel na svý
straně a díval se do zdi. Jeho pleš pořád
zdobila čmáranice od černé fixy. Položil
jsem hrneček na stůl vedle postele. Prosil mě,
abych zatáhl závěsy, aby sluneční paprsky
nepronikaly do pokoje.
I said, ‘You ought to fell happy today,
Dad. Tony could transform your life.’
„Tati, dnes bys měl být šťastnej,“ řekl
jsem, „Tony by mohl změnit tvůj život.“
He gave a harsh laugh as he sat up in bed
and reached for his Rothman’s. ‘Listen, son,’
Posadil se, sáhl po cigaretách a trpce se
zasmál. „Poslouchej synu,“ řekl, „za

he said, ‘under Mrs Thatcher I was a three-
times-a-week man, and if the sun was shining
I was bloody sex machine.’
Margaret Thatcherové jsem byl třikrát týdně
muž a když svítilo slunce, byl jsem zatracená
sexuální mašina.“
I said, ‘I was referring to the socio-
economic aspects of the new government.’
„Měl jsem namysli sociálně
ekonomickou stránku nový vlády,“ řekl jsem.
‘Yeah, well,’ he said, sucking on his
cigarette, ‘all I’m saying is that when Maggie
was in power I had lead in my pencil.’
„Aha,“ řekl a potahoval z cigarety,
„jenom říkám, že když byla Margaret u moci,
zasouval jsem tehdy svý pero.“
I left the room. As I saw it, there was no
point in reasoning with a man who could see
no further than the end of his pencil.
Odešel jsem z pokoje. Pochopil jsem, že
nemělo smysl bavit se s mužem, kterej
neviděl dál než na konec hrotu svýho pera.
Before I left for London, I tried to get up the
courage to talk to my mother about the
disastrous consequences certain to ensue if
she were to embark on an affair with her
local MP’s father. MI5 would follow her
around Asda. Her phone would be tapped
and, more importantly, was she really
prepared to put my father through a divorce
for a second time?
Než jsem odjel do Londýna, pokusil jsem se
dodat si odvahu a promluvit si s matkou o
katastrofálních následcích, který určitě
nastanou, pokud bude mít poměr s otcem
místní poslankyně. Sledovala by ji
bezpečnostní agentura až do supermarketu.
Odposlouchávali by její telefon, ale nejvíc
důležitý bylo, jestli byla fakt připravená
vláčet mýho otce rozvodem už podruhý?
I went to tackle her and found her in the
living room, deliriously happy, watching a
video loop of the expression on Michael
Portollio’s face as the realization dawned that
he had been kicked from office by his former
constituents. She shouted at the screen, ‘Yes,
you arrogant bastard, how does it feel to be
on the scarp-heap, like George Mole?’ I
didn’t want to prick her balloon of happiness.
And, anyway, I couldn’t risk us having an
argument that ended with her refusing to
look after her grandson.
Šel jsem si s ní promluvit a našel jsem ji
v obýváku. Byla neskutečně šťasná. Dívala
se na videu na výraz ve tváři Michaela
Portoilla když zjistil, že ho jeho bývalí voliči
potopili. „Jo, ty arogantní blbče, jaký to je,
být odpadek, stejně jako George Mole?“
řvala na obrazovku. Nechtěl jsem zničit její
příliv štěstí. A taky jsem nemohl riskovat, že
bysme se pohádali. To by skončilo tak, že by
se odmítla postarat o svýho vnuka.

before I could get into the Montego.
Eventually he was persuaded to let me go by
the promise that he could watch a video of
Jeremy Clarkson test-driving a Lamborghini.
The kid waved until I turned the corner of the
avenue. I was almost tempted to reverse and
pick him up, take him back to London with
me. But reason prevailed. What would I do
with him all day when I was working?
museli jsme odstrčit Williama od mých noh.
Nakonec jsme ho přesvědčili, že když mě
nechá jít, bude se moct dívat na zkušebního
řidiče Lamborghini Jeremyho Clarksona.
Prcek mával, dokud jsem nezahnul za roh
ulice. Málem jsem to otočil a vzal ho s sebou
do Londýna. Ale rozum zvítězil. Co bych
s ním dělal celej den, když budu v práci?
It was a gloriously warm day, and I
wound the window down and enjoyed the
breeze on my face. Unfortunately just before
I joined the motorway, an insect of some
kind flew up my left nostril, causing my eyes
to run all the way to London.
Byl příjemně teplej den, stáhnul jsem
okýnko a užíval jsem si vánek ve tváři.
Bohužel mi chvilku předtím, než jsem sjel na
dálnici, vlítl do levé nosní dírky nějakej druh
hmyzu a díky tomu mi celou cestu do
Londýna slzely oči.
Saw eleven Eddie Stobart lorries. Only
received nine salutes, though. Perhaps the
other two drivers didn’t see my greetings.
Otherwise the journey was without incident.
Viděl jsem jedenáct dodávek Eddyho
Stobarta, ale pozdravilo mě jenom devět
řidičů. Další dva asi neviděli moje zamávání.
Jinak to byla klidná cesta.

I didn’t have to start work until seven-
thirty so I bought a Guardian and sat outside
the Bar Italia in Greek Street. I was hoping to
read that Frank Bruno, Paul Daniels and
Bruce Forsyth had been spotted at Heathrow,
fleeing a Labour victory as promised, but
there were no reported sightings of them. I
suppose it is early days yet. They’ve got
mock-Tudor mansions to sell, and financial
advisers to consult.
Do půl osmé jsem nemusel pracovat,
takže jsem si koupil noviny Guardian a sedl
před Bar Itálie v Řecké ulici. Doufal jsem, že
si přečtu, že někdo viděl Franka Bruna, Paula
Danielse a Bruce Forsytha na Heathrow, jak
prchají před vítězstvím labouristů. Slíbili to,
ale i tak tam o nich nebylo nic. Asi je ještě
brzo. Mají na prodej falešný sídlo a finanční
poradce.
My friend Justine, who lap-dances at
Secrets, joined me for an espresso and said
that business had been excellent last night.
‘You couldn’t have got another bloke in the
place if you’d cut their dicks off,’ she said,
causing me to wince at her graphic account
of the crush. She went on, in her Gateshead
accent, ‘And they was mostly Labour
supporters.’ She told me that her boss, Large
Alan, had been `worrying his bollocks off`
about a possible change of government. He
had forecast massive redundancies for
Soho’s sex-industry workers should Labour
win. ‘It’s the Conservative MPs who kept the
“discipline” side of the business going,’
Justine explained. ‘Large Alan always gives
them a good discount – on production of a
Commons pass.’
Kamarádka Justine, která předvádí
erotický tance v Tajemství, se mnou šla na
espreso a říkala, že měla včera večer výborný
kšefty. „Nedostali bysme dovnitř další
chlapy, i kdybysme jim uřízli ptáky,“ řekla a
já jsem sebou při jejím živým vysvětlování
tlačenice trhl. Pokračovala svým
severovýchodním přízvukem: „A většinou
podporovali labouristy.“ Řekla mi, že její šéf,
Velkej Alan, byl „posranej strachy“, že by se
mohla změnit vláda. Předvídal nadbytek
pracovníků v sexuálním průmyslu v Soho,
pokud labouristé zvítězí. „To konzervativci
udržovali „ukázněnou“ část obchodu,“
vysvětlila Justine. „Velkej Alan jim vždycky
dává dobrý slevy – za vstup do Dolní
sněmovny.“
‚So, what special services do Labour
MPs request?’ I asked.
„A jaký zvláštní služby labouristé
požadujou?“ zeptal jsem se.
‘Well,’ she said, bringing her sunbed-
tanned face next to mine, ‘I’ve got one old

‘Such as what?’ I pressed, urgently. „Jaký?“ přitlačil jsem na ni.

her breasts inside her Wonderbra to show
them to better advantage. ‘I have to shout,

předvedla svoje přednosti. „Musím křičet

course, understood the references, because I
was founder and leader of a political

Asi neměla ani zdání o historii

proč to má křičet znám, protože jsem byl

zbrklých radikálních teenagerů.

After she’d hurried off to work I
pondered on the nature of our Soho village

such worldly things in any of the villages in
Leicestershire, apart from Frisby-on-the

paganism is practised on a large scale.

An angry crowd had gathered outside the
restaurant. A fat woman carrying a handbag
with a bamboo handle was saying in a lilting
Welsh accent, ‘I was born in Liverpool and
my partner is a lesbian comedian. It’s
disgraceful.’
Rozzuřenej dav se shromáždil před
restaurací. Tlustá ženská s kabelkou
s bambusovým uchem říkala rytmickým
welšským přízvukem: „Narodila jsem se
v Liverpoolu a moje přítelkyně je lesbická
komička. To je hanebné.“
Savage could be seen inside smoking a
fag, toasting the crowd in champagne. I let
myself in and passed through the restaurant
on my way to the kitchen.
Savageho jsem viděl vevnitř, kouřil
cigáro a připíjel davu šampaňským. Vešel
jsem dovnitř a cestou do kuchyně jsem prošel
přes restauraci.

Savage. Savage.
‘Better a pedant than a bigot,’ I replied.
‘That notice disqualifies most of our regular
customers. You’ll be bankrupt in a month
and we’ll all be on the street.’
„Je lepší být detailista než fanatik,“
odpověděl jsem. „To oznámení vyřazuje
většinu tvých pravidelných zákazníků. Do
měsíce zkrachuješ a všichni budeme na
dlažbě.“
‘That’s the idea,’ he slurred. ‘If I’m
bankrupt, I can’t pay Kim her allowance, can
I?’
„To je nápad,“ zažvatlal. „Pokud
zkrachuju, nebudu moct platit Kim přídavky,
že jo?“
I took advantage of his drukenness to
continue. ‘It’s your fault that Kim is
financially dependent on you. You refused to
let her work during your marriage, didn’t
you?’
Využil jsem jeho opilosti a pokračoval
jsem. „To je tvoje chyba, že je na tobě Kim
finančně závislá. Když jste byli manželé,
zakázals ji pracovat, pamatuješ?“
‘Work!’ shouted Savage. ‘You call

„Co? Pracovat!“ zakřičel Savage. „Ty
nazýváš uspořádávání pár posraných
větviček ve svazek nějakou prací?“

him, `with three shops and a contract with
Conran.’
„Byla ve společenství květinářů,“
připomněl jsem mu, „se třema obchodama a
smlouvou s Conranem.“
Savage laughed his horrible almost silent
laugh, as I went upstairs to the ‘flat’ above
the restaurant. I use ironic quote marks
around ‘flat’ because it is actually a
storeroom. I share my quarters with catering
packs of gravy mix and huge tins of
vegetables. Two gigantic freezers full of
offal and cheap cuts of meat crowd my
‘living room’. However, there is just room

I was annoyed to find that no one had
remembered to defrost the ox liver, so I had
to put the frozen lumps into the oven on a
low heat. The vegetables had been prepared,
so I made up five litres of gravy. While that
was boiling, I mixed the Bird’s custard
powder, milk and sugar together in a large
bowl, being careful not to blend the mixture
too carefully as this destroys the lumps when
the hot milk is added.
Byl jsem naštvanej, že si nikdo
nevzpomněl a nerozmrazil hovězí játra.
Musel jsem dát játra do trouby na pár stupňů.
Zelenina už byla připravená, tak jsem udělal
pět litrů omáčky. Když se omáčka vařila,
smíchal jsem ve velké míse dohromady
pudinkovej prášek, mlíko a cukr. Byl jsem
opatrnej, abych nemíchal směs moc pomalu,
jinak se při přidání teplýho mlíka hrudky
zničí.

dřezu,“ řekl, když se soukal na odkapávací
desku. „Mám tu blbou, jakej je ten název?“
řekl, když dával nohy pod studenej kohoutek.
„Plíseň!“ Vyslovil to vítězně, jako by si
vzpomněl na ordinaci, kde to slyšel poprvé.
„Svědí to jak blázen,“ řekl a škrabal se mezi
prstama.
I glanced at the notice on the staff toilet
door: ‚Please wash your hands,’ it said.
There was no mention of feet. Savage
lurched into the kitchen and staggered into
the toilet. He didn’t bother closing the door
and a sound like the Zambezi in spate was
clearly heard.
Mrkl jsem na nápis na dveřích k záchodu
pro zaměstnance. Je tam napsaný: „Prosíme,
umývejte si ruce.“ Nebyla tam ani zmínka o
nohách. Savage se připotácel do kuchyně a
dokolíbal na záchod. Neobtěžoval se zavřít
dveře a byl zřetelně slyšet zvuk, jako
rozvodněné Zambezi.
I rushed down the passageway, and
slammed the door shut. I came back to see
Malcolm, the washer-upper, unzipping his
blouson jacket. He was visibly upset. I asked
him what was wrong.
Vyřítil jsem se uličkou dolů a zabouchl
jsem dveře. Vrátil jsem se a viděl Malcolma,
umývače nádobí, jak si rozepíná kabátek.
Bylo na něm vidět, že je rozrušenej. Zeptal
jsem se, co se stalo.
‘Tha’s out of order,’ he said, nodding
towards Luigi’s feet in the sink. ‘Tha’s my
territory, that sink, an’ whadif the
ealth inspect us, eh?’
„To není dobrý,“ řekl, a kývl hlavou
směrem k Luigovým nohám ve dřezu. „To je
mý území, ten dřez a co když nás přijde
zkontrolovat zdravotní inspekce, hm?“
Luigi screamed, ‘I been working in
restaurants for twenty-seven year. I served
Princess Margaret and Tony, an’ Cassius

I busied myself with defrosting the ox
liver. I don’t involve myself with the
constant kitchen rows. I am called Head Chef
but this means nothing: I am low down in the
pecking order at Hoi Polloi. I am employed
solely for my pure English genes, and my
authentic working-class food background.
Zabavil jsem se rozmrazováním hovězích
jater. Nezasahuju do každodenních hádek
v kuchyni. I když jsem šéfkuchař, nic to
neznamená: Jsem v restauraci HoPo na
nejnižším stupni ve žracím pořadí. Jsem tady
zaměstnanej jenom proto, že jsem
čistokrevnej Angličan a díky mýmu
vykrmení na opravdovým dělnickým jídle.
Savage emerged from the lavatory after
ten minutes, looking bright-eyed and happy. I
pointed out to him that he’d got talcum
powder on the end of his nose. He laughed
and said, ‘Missed a bit, eh?’ and went into
the restaurant to unlock the front door. The
waiters, Kenneth and Sean, were half an hour
late, and where were my assistant cooks,
Sasha and Aziz?
Po deseti minutách Savage vyšel ze
záchodu, leskly se mu oči a byl veselej.
Upozornil jsem ho, že má na špičce nosu
pudr. Zasmál se a řekl: „Trošku jsem minul,
co?“ a šel odemčít vchodový dveře do
restaurace. Číšníci Kenneth a Sean měli
půlhodiny zpoždění, ale kde jsou moji
pomocní kuchaři Saša a Azíz?
It was fifteen minutes to ‘dishing-up time’
when Jimmy the Greek came into the kitchen
from the taverna next door. He said that the
Greek community in Britain voted Labour
because of a promise made by Neil Kinnock
twelve years ago that the Elgin marbles
would be returned to the Parthenon as soon
as the Labour Party gained power. Jimmy
had come round in the hope of seeing a
famous Labour Party face… one that he
could petition.
Patnáct minut před „podáváním jídla“ přišel
z vedlejší hospody do kuchyně Řek Jimmy.
Řekl, že řecká komunita v Británii volila
labouristy, protože před dvanácti lety Leil
Kinnosck slíbil, že jakmile se labouristé
dostanou k moci, mramorovej Elgin bude
vrácenej do Pathenonu. Jimmy se stavil,
protože doufal, že uvidí nějakou známou
labouristickou osobnost… někoho, komu by
mohl předat petici.

As I turned the spitting slices of ox liver
in the roasting tin, I said, ‘I didn’t know you
were interested in historical artifacts,

Otočil jsem prskající kus hovězích jater
v plechu a řekl jsem: „Nevěděl jsem, že se
zajímáš o historii, Jimmy.“
‚We was stitched up by Lord Elgin and
the Turks,’ said Jimmy, flicking cigarette ash
into the sink. ‘I want justice for my country. I
would die for Greece!’ he added,
melodramatically.
„Spojili nás Lord Elgin a Turkové,“ řekl
Jimmy a odklepal popel do dřezu. „Chci pro
svou zemi spravedlnost. Pro Řecko bych
klidně zemřel!“ dodal dramaticky.
‚I wouldn’t die for England,’ said
Malcolm. ‘It’s never done me no favours.’
„Já bych pro Anglii nezemřel,“ řekl
Malcolm, „nikdy mi neprokázala nějakou
laskavost.“
‘Well, thanks to Nato and the nuclear
deterrent, neither of you will be asked to lay
down your lives,’ I said. ‘Now, if you don’t
mind, I’ve got sixty-two people waiting to be
fed, and no staff!’ I threw a fish-slice across
the kitchen. I occasionally indulge in fits of
bad temper. People expect it of a Head Chef,
and it reduces my stress levels, according to
my ex-stress counsellor, Sky Lupin.
„No, díky NATO a nukleárnímu
zastrašování nebudou ani po jednom z vás
chtít, abyste zemřeli,“ řekl jsem. „Teď,
pokud vám to nevadí, mám šedesát dva lidí,
kteří chtěj jídlo a nemám žádnej personál!“
Hodil jsem kus ryby přes kuchyň. Sem tam
dávám volnej průchod návalům špatný
nálady. Lidi to od šéfkuchaře očekávají a
podle mýho bývalýho poradce na stres, Sky
Lupina, to můj stres uvolňuje.
Malcolm said, ‘I’ll help you out with the
waitering, but I ain’t doin’ it for three quid an
hour.’
„Pomůžu ti roznášet,“ řekl Malcolm, „ale
nemakám za tři babky na hodinu.“
I said, ‘Malcolm, look at yourself. You
are seriously unkempt. You were born to live
behind the scenes.’
„Malcolme, podívej se na sebe, seš úplně
rozcuchanej. Narodil ses, abys žil mezi
kulisama,“ řekl jsem.
To my amazement his eyes filled with
tears. ‘Yeah, well, that’s what you think,
Mole. Tony Blair’s gonna look after me from
now on. I’m workin’ class, an’ Labour ‘as
always looked after the workin’ class.’
Divil jsem se, že se jeho oči zaplnily
slzama. „Jo, dobře, to si myslíš ty, Mole. Teď

THE WHITE VAN – A SYNOPSIS BÍLÁ DODÁVKA – OBSAH
The White Van is a television comedy drama
in twelve half-hours.
Bílá dodávka je dvanáct a půlhodinová
televizní dramatická komedie.
The hero is Godfrey Hetherington (Harry
Enfield), who by day is a BBC accountant
and by night is a serial killer who drives
around the Home Counties in a white van,
murdering women.
Hlavním hrdinou je Godfrey Heherington
(Harry Enfiled), který je ve dne účetní BBC a
v noci masový vrah. Jezdí kolem Home
Counties v bílé dodávce a vraždí ženy.
The comedy arises from the fact that
Godfrey‘s wife Gloria (Pauline Quirke)
knows nothing of her husband’s nocturnal
activities. She thinks he’s on a charity soup-
run for the homeless.
Komedie vychází ze skutečnosti, že
Godfreyova manželka Gloria (Pauline
Quirke) nemá tušení o manželových nočních
aktivitách. Myslí, že pro charitu rozváží
polévky bezdomocům.
The laughs come thick and fast as a
blundering police inspector (David Jason)
comes close to catching Godfrey, only to see
him make his escape yet again.
Sranda začíná, když se chybující
policejní inspektor (David Jason) dostane
blízko polapení Godfreyho, ale znovu ho

Kenneth and Sean turned up just in time
to help garnish the prawn cocktails with
sprigs of not-so-fresh parsley. They claimed
they were late because they’d been stuck at
Morningtom Crescent on the Northern Line
for an hour and half in the dark. I asked the
reason for the delay. Sean said, ‘Rats had
chewed through the electrical cables and
stopped the train.’ I asked him how he knew.
He said, ‘I looked out of the carriage window
and there was this rat, as big as a dog, it was,
staring back at me, and, I swear on my
mother’s life, it had a piece of cable hanging
there in its fat chops.’
Kenneth a Sean se objevili zrovna včas,
aby mi pomohli ozdobit krevety ne moc
čerstvou petrželí. Tvrdili, že se opozdili,
protože se na hodinu a půl zasekli ve tmě
v Mornington Crescent na severní lince.
Zeptal jsem se na důvod zpoždění. „Krysy
přežvýkaly elektrický kabely a to zastavilo
vlak,“ řekl Sean. Zeptal jsem se ho, jak to ví.
„Podíval jsem se z okna vagónu a byla tam ta
krysa, obrovská jako pes, fakt, podívala se na
mě a přísahám na matčin život, kousek
kabelu ji visel z tlustý tlamy.“

We discussed possible reasons for the no-

that they’d been rounded up by the
immigration authorities, which is a constant
hazard in the catering industry. It makes
long-term planning impossible, and certainly
screws up holiday rotas, etc.

My father’s gangrenous bonce is better,
according to the latest medical report.
Podle posledního doktorova sdělení je otcova
sněťová palice lepší.
After a restless night, he was persuaded
to lie in a warm bath that had been infused
with an essential oil (marigold). He
massaged his scalp with seaweed and
conditioned the little hair left on his head
with a purée manufactured from an Irish bog
plant. When he emerged from the bathroom,
his scalp, according to my mother, was ‘it’s
usual nice pink’.
Po neklidný noci ho matka přesvědčila,
aby si lehl do teplý vany, která byla
napuštěná éterickým olejem (měsíček).
Mořskýma řasama si masíroval kůži hlavy a
s pomocí pyré, který se vyrábí z irské
rašeliny si upravil těch pár chloupků na levé
straně hlavy. Když vyšel z koupelny, jeho
pokožka hlavy měla podle matky svou
„hezkou, přirozenou růžovou barvu“.
My mother sees this episode as a glorious

hope she never finds out about the felt-tip

times in her life.

unsettling. I asked Large Alan how he

Pokud bych měl popsat výzdobu, řekl

Some of the noise was caused by a loud

MASARYK UNIVERSITY IN BRNO – THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION Brno 2008 DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Written by: Zuzana Novotná
TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 45 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
4.1 TRADITIONAL METHODS OF TRANSLATING
In this section of my thesis I would like to mention traditional methods of translating
according to Dagmar Knittlová 2)
There are various manners of handling the translation process making use of successions as
well as different choices of these methods, even though all these methods respond to the same
problem. Earlier translation theorists such as Fjodorov, Levý, Catford and others did not
always use precise designations for the various translation operations they carried out, rather
referring to them mostly changes or progressions. Contemporary Russian, German and our
linguists who dealt with the question of translating (Poldauf, Bareš and others) were
influenced by the Canadian authors, Vinaye and Darbelnet. They made use of seven basic
processes, thanks to which all translators solve the lack of direct equivalents in the target
language. These seven basic processes are: transcription, substitution, transposition,
modulation, equivalence and adaptation. I have found that the most important thing is to find
the proper equivalent. I would like to make a comparison of my own translation with that
done by Helena Hartlová.
4.2 LEXICAL EQUIVALENCE
The translator must be able to distinguish literary language from non-literary, ordinary
language from specialized, the centre from the periphery and he should be able to use the
proper style of language. There are three types of equivalents: the absolute equivalent, the
partial equivalent and the zero equivalent [3.33].
4.2.1 Absolute Equivalent
In the absolute equivalent the translated word has the exact meaning as the original word.
Some words, mainly basic vocabulary that are substantives, can be used for the absolute
equivalent.

4.2.2. Partial Equivalent
4.2.2.1 More words in English – Less words in Czech
English is an analytical language thus more words are used to describe a particular thing or
situation whereas Czech as a synthetic language can use just one word for the same purpose.
In English the focal point of a nominal phrase is usually a classifying noun such as man, thing
or time. [3.36]

4.2.2.2 Explicitness – Implicitness
English sometimes adds more information whereas in Czech one word is usually sufficient.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
car park parkoviště parkoviště
There is no need to add a discriminating descriptive word because the meaning is
unambiguous.
4.2.2.3 Prepositional Phrase
The Czech translation often includes at least a preposition which indicates the relation
between the determinate and the determinant. In English the indicator does not necessarily
have to exist. The position of nouns is important as for example club discussion has a
different meaning from discussion club. [3.39]

4.2.2.4 Differences in Denotation
Diversities in denotation result from differences in both languages, from different levels of
abstraction, from a dissonant point of view to reality and from the emphasis on different
signs. The marked reality is the same or fulfils the same function in the text so the information
remainly practically unchanged. [3.41]
4.2.2.4.1 Specification
The most frequent semantic difference between a lexical item in English and in Czech is
caused by the fact that the Czech equivalent contains an extra semantic unit. It is called
specification or substitution with a hyponym where a hyponym means a word or phrase
whose semantic range is included within that of another word. [3.41-42] For example fly is a
hyponym of insect. In translating from English to Czech the verbs are usually specified.

Pitomě se řehtali. Smáli se jako pitomí.
4.2.2.4.2 Generalisation
Generalisation is the reduction of semantic units. It produces an increase of abstraction and
substitution by a hyperonymum, where a hyperonymum is a word that defines a group of
objects or things. For example table or chair comes under the group of furniture.
Generalization is less frequent than specification. Generalization is often used with nouns
usually if the word is unknown in the Czech language [3.53].

4.2.2.4.3 Semantic Connection – Contiguity
The basic semantic parts are not changed but semantic items are different. A substitution by a
lexical item of the same sort is very frequent [3.53-55].
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
she couldn’t look me in the

do očí se mi podívat nemohla
4.2.2.5 Differences in Connotation
Connotation is a subjective cultural or emotional coloration in addition to the explicit
meaning of any specific word or phrase in a language, i.e. emotional association with a word.
Most words are neutral but they can become a connotation in the translated text. It is possible
to distinguish an expressive and a stylistic connotation. The expressivity is the reinforcing of
a statement. Emotivity is a part of the expressivity. In case that the text should stay unchanged
the right connotation is as important as the denotation. [3.55-3.57]
4.2.2.5.1 Expressive Connotation
The expressive connotation means that a neutral expression is translated by an emotive word
in the diminutive form. The choice of which word should be used is mostly up to the
translator’s conception of the work. [3.58]
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
As I put the mug down Položil jsem hrneček zanesl hrnek
The kid waved Prcek mával Dítko mi mávalo
4.2.2.5.1.1 Interjection
Interjections are symbols of human emotions. They are words with strong emotional sense. In
Primary interjections there is no equivalent in Czech thus they are usually translated as
particles. Secondary interjections are words with an interjectional function. [3.63-65]

think, Mole’
„Jo, dobře, to si myslíš ty,
Mole.“
„Jo, jasně, to si myslíš ty,
Moulíku.“
4.2.2.5.2 Intensification
Intensifications are usually used in spoken language. They signify a high degree or high
intensity of feelings, attitudes or valuation without further specification. [3.65-77]
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
was drawing heavily on
cigarette
silně potahovala z cigarety usilovně tahala z cigarety
deliriously happy neskutečně šťastná šíleně šťastnou
The effect was horribly
unsettling.
Výsledek byl strašně rušivej. Účinek byl hrozně
zneklidňující.
4.2.2.5.3 Stylistic Connotation
A neutral English lexical unit sometimes corresponds to a word which is expressive,
colloquial, dialectal, slang or from student speech. [3.77]
* colloquial:
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
The woman is obsessed with
herself!
Ta ženská je posedlá sama
sebou!
Ta žena je posedlá sama
sebou!
English slang corresponds to the Czech neutral, expressive, colloquial, unassumed, slang,
vulgar or argotic lexical unit. [3.79]
* unmannered:
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s translation
Yes, you arogant bastard Jo, ty arogantní blbče Tak co, ty arogantní zmetku

4.2.2.6 Differences in Pragmatics
Differences arise from the translator’s experience and as a result of country-bias according to
where the author and the translator live. [3.81]
A translator sometimes has to add an explicative word or phrase because the Czech reader
does not always have to understand the word if there is no further clarification:
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
I bought a Guardian koupil noviny Guardian koupil Guardian
by readers of Floristy Today čtenáři časopisu Floristy

od čtenářů Květinářství dnes
designer of The 165 navrhovatel baru The 165 architect interiéru „165”
No Groucho members Členům uměleckýho klubu
Groucho
členy klubu Groucho
Most frequently, there is a substitution by analogy caused by different units of measure in
every language:
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
Weight – 10 stone, 8 pounds Váha – 67 kilo váha – 67 kg
4.2.2.6.1 Zero Equivalent
The zero equivalent is used in the case that there is no equivalent for the word or phrase in the
target language.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
I arrived at the Brent Cross
shopping centre car park
Přijel jsem na parkoviště
nákupního centra Brent

Přijel jsem na parkoviště u

předměstí Brent Cross
4.3 GRAMMATICAL EQUIVALENCE
A translator must deal with many differences in both languages. Here is a synopsis of a
number of the problems which may arise [3.92-95].
In Czech it is difficult to decide which grammatical gender should be used: the question of
third person masculine/feminine singular gender arises.

As a cook Jako kuchař Jako kuchař

TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 51 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
When deciding which aspect should be used, regard must be taken to the basis of the context.
Every verb is completive or imperfective in Czech. It is easier to decide when an adverbial
particle or prefix is used.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
slammed the door shut zabouchl jsem dveře s prásknutím dveře zavřel
There is also a considerable problem when the person in question is the second person
singular and plural personal pronoun you.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
Yes, you arrogant bastard Jo, ty arogantní blbče Tak co, ty arogantní zmetku
Forgive me for addressing
you as ‘Ms’ if you are in fact
a married woman
pokud jste ve skutečnosti
vdaná, odpusťe mi, že vás
oslovuji „slečno“
odpusťte mi, že Vás oslovuji
„slečno“, pakliže jste ve
skutečnosti vdanou paní
The translator can make a lot of mistakes when he or she is interpreting tenses which do not
exist in the Czech language.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
I had lead in my pencil zasouval jsem tehdy svý
pero
měl jsem v kanónu munici
I have just finished work Právě jsem skončil v práci Zrovna jsem skončil v práci
Although the translator very often takes the passive voice from the original text, this is not
usually used in works of fiction in Czech. It is quite common to use the passive voice in
English whereas this tense is used in Czech mostly in professional literature or speeches. That
is the reason why I did not use the passive voice while translating Adrian’s diary.
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
Savage was forced to help
me out
Savage mi musel pomoct byl Savage nucen mi pomoct
4.4 TEXTUAL EQUIVALENCE
The textual equivalence is just as important as the lexical and the grammatical equivalence. It
deals with the organization of the text, its structure of information, coherence and cohesion.

TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 52 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
4.4.1 Structure of Information in a Text
The question of Functional Sentence Perspective can be placed under text organization, where
a sentence is divided into two basic parts – a theme and a rhyme. The rhyme carries the
highest degree of communicative dynamism and the theme is a given part of a sentence.
[5.45-48 It is very important for a translator to distinguish a piece of new information and to
stress it.
English has a fixed word order thus if a writer wants to put the stress on something it has to be
different from the common standard. [3.96] One method of stressing is fronting – moving the
theme into initial position where it is uncommon. It gives the fronted element a prominence
[5.143].
Another method is using cleft structures – a sentence is divided into two clauses: the first
part of the cleft construction consists of the formal subject it followed by the form of the verb
to be; the second part takes the form of a relative clause. [5.139]
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
It was Tania Braithwaite who
woke us by phoning and
asking if Ivan was at our
house.
To Tania Braithwaitová nás
vzbudila telefonem.
Probudil nás telefon. Tania
Braithwaitová…
The other possible method of stressing is using italic. Czech language uses lexical units in this
case. [3.98]
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
I would die for Greece! Pro Řecko bych klidně
zemřel!
Pro Řecko bych umřel!
4.4.2 Coherence
Coherence is the unity of meaning and communicative purpose perceived in discourse in a
particular context. [5.139] Coherence creates and organizes the text. It is subjective because it
can be understood by different readers in different ways.
4.4.3 Cohesion
Cohesion is the semantic and formal relation between elements of a discourse which are
expressed so that the interpretation of the meaning of one element in the discourse is

TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 53 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
dependent on that of another. Cohesion can be grammatical, lexical and structural. [5.140]
According to Halliday and Hasan it is possible to distinguish five main cohesive methods:
reference, substitution, ellipsis, connectors and lexical cohesion. [3.101] I will deal with these
methods in the next sections.
4.4.3.1 Reference
Referring expressions are those language items whose semantic interpretation is reached by
reference to something else in the discourse or in the situational context. The cohesive effect
of referring expressions results from the fact that the same thing (person, idea) is being
referred to repeatedly within the same discourse. The set of referring expressions in English
includes personal pronouns, determiners, adjectives and adverbs. [5.32]

nasednout do montega.
Nakonec se dal přesvědčit,
aby mě nechal jet, slibem, že
se bude smět dívat na video s
testovací jízdou Jeremyho
Clarksona na voze
Lamborghini.
4.4.3.2 Substitution
Substitution is the replacement of one language item by another; it is a grammatical relation
resulting in a change of wording rather than in the meaning. [5.36]
4.4.3.3 Ellipsis
Ellipsis is the omission of elements normally required by grammatical structure and which are
precisely recoverable from the situational or verbal context and therefore redundant. Ellipsis
may be regarded as a form of substitution in which a language item is replaced by nothing.

TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS THESIS - 54 - Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
4.4.3.4 Connector
A connector is a cohesive link formed by words and phrases which explicitly indicate type of
relationship existing between clauses, sentences and utterances in a discourse [5.29]. Various
types of languages prefer different types of connectors.
4.4.3.5 Lexical Cohesion
Within the frame of lexical cohesion it is possible to repeat a lexical unit in an unchanged
form or as a synonym, hyperonym or paraphrase.
4.5. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MY AND HARTLOVÁ’S
TRANSLATION
In this section I would like to demonstrate where I do not agree with Ms Hartlová’s
translation. It is probably caused by a different point of view on the persona of Adrian Mole.
We have differing points of view about him as a person. In my opinion, Adrian Mole thinks
that he is the cleverest person in the world but bad luck keep him from becoming a famous
writer and having a serious relationship with his beloved Pandora. But in fact he is not as
smart as he thinks. When I was reading the book as translated by Helena Hartlová I had a very
different impression of Adrian Mole, he seemed to me to be a really clever man, who speaks
seriously and who uses complicated sentence structures, e.g. passive voice that is not very
common in Czech.
MI5
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
MI5 would follow her around
Asda.
Sledovala by ji bezpečnostní
agentura až do supermarketu.
MI5 za ní bude chodit až do
supermarketu.
When I was reading the book translated by Ms Hartlová, I did not have any idea who or what
was following the character. Then I started translating and I found out that MI5 stands for
Military Intelligence, Section 5, which is the security service. Most Czech readers would not
know what MI5 means. That is why I translated it as “bezpečnostní agentura” and not as
“MI5”.

Although both words have the same meaning I choose the word “Homosexuálové” because in
my opinion nobody uses the word “Sodomité” nowadays.
Gravy

The vegetables had been
prepared, so I made up five
litres of gravy.
Zelenina už byla připravená,
tak jsem udělal pět litrů
omáčky.
Zelenina byla připravená, tak
jsem udělal pět litrů UHO.
This is nearly the same as in the case of MI5. When I read the translated book I did not know
what UHO stood for. I had to engage the help of the Internet once again. There I learned that
UHO is in fact gravy. It means Universal Brown Gravy (Univerzální Hnědá Omáčka). Again I
think that not every reader would know what UHO means.
Explicative
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
so I bought a Guardian takže jsem si koupil noviny
Guardian
tak jsem si koupil Guardian
Although the Guardian is not sold in the Czech Republic, Hartlová does not use the
explicative word which could make the meaning clearer.
Italic

Ty nazýváš uspořádání pár
posraných větviček ve

Ty říkáš naaranžování trochy

Dagmar Knittlová states in her book that using italic is the method of stressing which is not
translated in italic into the Czech language but in Czech we add a lexical unit instead.

Although it is made from corn-flour I have translated the phrase as “pudinkovej prášek”.
Good-luck fairy
Townsend’s original My translation Hartlová’s transltion
The good-luck fairy Sudička štěstí Dobrá víla
At first I wanted to translate the good-luck fairy as “víla štěstí”. When I presented a part of
my translation to my supervisor, Mgr. Martin Němec, he asked: ‘Do we use the word “víla“
or “sudička“ in Czech? Thanks to this question I remembered fairy-tales I had seen and heard
in the past and I realized that the word “sudičky“ was actually more common in Czech.
Different words
I would like to mention a few others words which Helena Hartlová used in her translation. I
do not agree with because they seem to be more suitable for more serious works and, in my
opinion, Adrian would not use in his diary. It is probably caused by our different points of
view of Adrian Mole.

5. CONCLUSION
Although the book Adrian Mole: the Cappuccino Years has been quite recently
translated, I wanted to show a different way of translating this book because in some cases I
did not agree with Helena Hartlová’s translation. In my opinion, Adrian is not such a clever
man as he thinks he is. On this account the book is not meant to be intellectual but rather it is
full of humor. The set of books starts when Adrian is thirteen years old thus the book has been
mostly read by teenaged people. That is why I avoided using compound sentences and
divided them into short simple sentences.
In the second part of my bachelor’s thesis, in the theoretical part, I deal with problems
which appeared during the translation. In the theoretical part, I also compared my translation
with the one written by Helena Hartlová for showing where we had a different translation and
where I did not agree with her. I can say I am very glad I could choose this topic as my
bachelor thesis. Although solving some of the problems was quite time-consuming I have to
say I enjoyed the translation very much.
