Living Past Potentates

3

Nobles,

Thank you for putting your faith in me to be your Potentate for 2019. I am proud to hold this position and look forward to a great year. This year will mark the 130th Po-tentate of Moolah Shrine in conjunction with my 30th year as a Shriner. I have made many new friends since being on the Divan advancing line. Getting to know more of our Club members has been very enjoyable. Our Shrine Clubs are a big part of what makes Moolah one of the best Temples in North America. My motto for this year is “Together We Are One”. It refers to going back to your Blue Lodges to support and being involved with them as much as you can. By helping them grow, it will, in turn, help us grow. Our Blue Lodges are our roots and we need to let them know we are here to help.

Our Ceremonial Cast is one of the best. I believe we need to have all of our candidates see the great job they do. I have two ceremonials scheduled for 2019 and I do not plan to do any short forms on meeting nights. Potential candidates can still come to your unit events and see what we do. By waiting, it may help keep them active when they become Shriners.

We will kick off 2019 with our first bus trip to Hannibal, MO to install the new officers at Nemo Shrine on January 5th. It will be the first of many installations to take place throughout the first three months of the year. Our Potentate’s Ball is February 23rd. This will be a black-tie event. First Lady Diane and I hope you will join us for a night of fun. We will have hotel information and shuttles available soon.

Circus preparations have been well under way. Circus Chairman/Chief Rabban Russell Georgen and Circus Director Ron Reynolds have pledged to do $1 dollar better than last year to beat that great year we had for 2018. I think they can do it! Remember, the Circus is a Temple Callout. A Temple Callout is a call to all members to come out and help. There are things to do before, during and after the Circus. This is our biggest fund raiser and it takes a lot of people to pull it off. The Shrine Clubs can help too. We have committees that need help during the Circus. Come for one or two shows or whatever you have time for. If you can help, please see our Circus Director, Ron Reynolds.

We will also have the Sportsman Raffle again. This event has been a success and is getting better and better each year. It is also an event that every unit, club and committee can get involved in as well.

As most of you know, the Ballroom needs some renovating. This is going to be a big project this year. We will be proposing new carpet, wall coverings, lights, dance floor and other features to bring it up to date. Besides work on the dance floor and new AC units, not much has been done aesthetically to that room since we took over the building. We hope to have details ready at the January meeting.

Speaking of the January meeting. I am going to be starting the Stated Meetings at 7:00PM instead of 7:30PM. The Ladies are welcome, and Bunco will be played during the meeting for them.

As I close, as your Potentate for 2019, Lady Diane and I are there for you as you need us. We have been so blessed to have been supported in our journey by our families and our friends and will continue even stronger for yet another great year.

Fraternally,

Illustrious Sir Don Taylor

God is a good God, and he has good plans for your life. Other people have bad plans for your life, and you may make some bad plans yourself, but God only has good plans for your life.

Not everything in your life may be good—God didn’t promise that. He didn’t say everything that happens in your life would be good. We live on a broken planet. Nothing works perfectly. Your body is broken. It doesn’t always work the right way. Your mind is broken. It doesn’t think the right way. The weather is broken, the economy’s broken, and relationships are broken. Nothing is perfect.

God did not promise us perfection. That’s called heaven! In heaven, there is no sorrow, sadness, sickness, or suffering. We should not expect heaven to be on earth, because the earth is filled with brokenness. But even in the middle of all this brokenness, God has a good plan for your life. He is greater than your bad choic-es, and he can fit even foolish decisions into a good plan. What a God!

The Bible says in Romans 8:28, “We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his pur-pose for them”. This is not a promise for everybody in the world. Not everything is working together for good for everybody. But everything is working together for good for those who say, “God, I give you my life. I want to fulfill the purpose you made me for.” And even then, it doesn’t say all things are good. It says they all work together for your good—even the bad and even the bitter.

Have you noticed that when you make a cake, the individual ingredients don’t taste good? Flour by itself does not taste good. Raw eggs do not taste good. Vanil-la by itself does not taste good. But mix it all together, and you can create a tasty masterpiece.

When you let God work all the “ingredients” together, God can take the bitter, put it in the batter, and make you better. Why? Because he’s a good God.The more you pray, the better you’re going to know your purpose. And the better you know your purpose, the more God can use everything in your life—even the bitter and broken things.

Let us pray to work together for an outstanding year with God’s blessing.

January is the Month of empty pockets. January is also the month of renewal and inspiration.

The Christmas season is over and what a great time it was at Moolah. There were so many parties and activities it was impossible to attend them all. It is hoped you and your family had a joyful and happy Christmas.

In 2018 Illustrious Sir Kyle McEvoy lived up to his motto: “Having Fun for Generations to Come”. There were many activities that kept all of us busy having fun. Who can forget the two Ceremonials, the Cardinal baseball game, the Mizzou football trip, and the First Lady’s Rock-n-Roll Bingo fundraiser. The highlight of the year was the Potentates’ Christmas Ball. The food was excellent, the music was known to us and people had fun dancing. A “big thank you” to Illustrious Sir Kyle.

The Ambassador Christmas party was well attended. It was a time for all to relax, see old friends and make new ones. It was a pleasure to see widows enjoying their time with us. The entertainment was fun and helped get people into the Christmas spirit.

Several activities are planned for January. Put down the bus trips for January and February on your calendar. January 5th is to NEMO and January 19th-20th is to Three Rivers, and Feb-ruary 16th is to Jefferson City. Sign up by calling Monica at 314-878-6301.Space is limited. Do not forget the Stated Meeting on January 16th. See the Camels’ Tales for other Moolah activities.

At the November Ambassador lunch, Jack Melton gave a list of upcoming Moolah events. Bill Brad-ford gave a hospital report. There is a need to fill the toy chest for hospital patients. Jeff Kittsmiller encouraged all Ambassadors to ask a fellow Mason to become a Shriner. Ron Reynolds spoke about the circus. Ads for the circus book are needed. Car Shield is again a corporate sponsor. Also, the Circus Angel program needs donations from units and clubs to help send kids to our great circus. Plan to attend the Ambassa-

dor luncheons on the second Friday of the month. We will be meeting on January 11th. Call Wally at 314-498-6915 or send an e-mail to [email protected] for a reservation.

Happy Birthday to all Ambassadors who have a birthday this month. Come to the Ambassador luncheon and be the first in the food line. What an honor!!!!

It is with sadness that we remember the loss of John Michael “Mike” Cordell. He was an outstanding Shriner who never complained or said anything negative. He organized the Patient Party making it very successful. Prayers go out to his family.

It is also with sadness that another Ambassador has passed. Robert Lang passed away in No-vember. He was a 33rd degree Mason and the Director Emeritus of the Moolah Shrine Chanters. Prayers go out to his family.

Several Ambassadors are in sickness and distress. Remember them in your prayers. On a happier note: Russell Georgen is in good spirits and improving every day. He is now back at work.

As Shriners, it comes as no surprise, to have so many famous men who were Masons and Shri-ners. The list is endless. We need to acknowl-edge them and their contributions. Some of the names are very recognizable while other are not. One name that is familiar is Harry S. Truman. He became the 33rd President of the United States leading the country through the difficult post-war years. He was the first Worshipful Master of Grandview Lodge, a 33degree Mason, the 97th Grand Master of Missouri and a member of Ararat Temple.

Trivia about Truman: 1. Only President to receive a 33rd degree 2. Captain in the US army 3. Only Pres-ident to receive a 50 year Masonic pin 4. Assassi-nation attempt was made on his life while President. Extra Trivia: Do you know what the “S” stands for in Truman’s name? Answer in next month’s Camels’ Tales. No fair looking up the answer.

Gone West..... Noble John Michael Cordell......…. It is with much sadness that we report the passing of our friend and brother, Noble John Mike Cordell. Regardless of how you knew him name wise, he was an all around great individual. He was a CAN DO kind of guy and was a driving force in many or of events, activities and causes. Please keep his bride Carla and family in your thoughts and prayers.

What a great December! Lots of events which means lots of fun for all. The patient party was great with a few clowns getting on TV that night. Thanks to Duffer (Gary Fanger) and his lady Lucy for an awesome Clown Christmas Party. Lots of food and lots of kids, who could ask for a better time.

Congrats to all of our new officers and we all are looking to have another great year for our Unit. Within a week we'll be hosting our 4th annual Trivia Nite on January 12th. Hopefully you all have a lot of friends coming and deposited all your donations for door prizes and basket items for our ladies to organize. Here's a big THANKS for all the preparation work you all have already put towards our fundraiser. Also thanks to all the workers who helped out that night. Hope you all have a great time.

It saddens us to lose a friend. The loss of our dear friend, Nobel Robert M. Lang is to his family, friends, the Shrine, the Chanters and most of all to his dear wife, Lady June, a loss that will not soon pass for where there was music, there would be the Langs. Music began their lives together when Bob fell in love with the singer in his band, a beautiful songstress named June. Music continued to be their passion throughout their lives for wherever music could be heard, there you could be certain to find the Langs. Bob

The American Muscle Unit has rennovated their new room at the Shrine. The room has a brand new large screen TV, new lights, and new ceiling fans. Stop by and check it out!

The American Muscle Unit is an active parade Unit, and we most recently paraded our Muscle Cars on November 17th in Granite City, Illinois. We are looking for additional new genies to pilot our Flying Carpets. Please consider joining us if you wish to show off your Muscle Car or if you would like to delight those attending our parades by piloting a Magic Carpet.

The American Musclemen will meet on Wednes-day, January 2 at 5 pm to paint the Unit Room. The regular monthly business meeting will follow.

The American Musclemen will work with the Smokin' Nobles to conduct our Annual Memorial Day BBQ event at Jefferson Barracks on Saturday, May 18, 2019. This popular event feeds all our veterans and the hospital staff at Jefferson Barracks pork steaks, chicken breasts, cole slaw, potato salad, drinks, and individually wrapped desserts.

If you have a muscle car you would like to show or parade, join us. If you do not have a mus-cle car but would like to drive one of the Unit's Mystical Flying Carpets, join us! The American Muscle Unit meets at 6:30 pm the first Wednes-day of every month. Our Unit room is on the same level as the office, in the SouthWest corner of the Shrine

Patrol. More information to follow. Rob Boland is our Chairman and reservation clerk.

The Patrol was well represented at the 2018 Potentate’s Christmas Ball. We are definitely one of the largest and most active units at Moolah. Great turn out by the Ladies and their Patrol men. Ho Ho back at ya!

The Patrol Room was used to support the Grand Lodge MO Chip Program during the Santa Break-fast on December 8 th and 9 th. Noble Lodge and Kirkwood Lodge were the host organizations for this event. We were happy to be a part of the Masonic Children’s Identity Program. Our room provided a great atmosphere for the kids and their families.

A big Atta-Boy goes out to the Marching 48 ground crew for the Fall Ceremonial. We had the longest hole in the tournament. I mean the height of the grass. Tim and his acquisition of HS “as-tro” turf provided a challenging par 48 hole. The putters were kept shiny and the golf balls were the cleanest on the course. Hitting it straight was not an option.

was a teacher of music and our conductor for many years. He and Lady June traveled to many places to hear music of many kinds.

We are very fortunate to now have as our conductor Nobel Jim Gesell. As Bob did before him, Jim carries on the duties as conductor in a manner that continues that success leading us to a level of musical pleasure.

With the joy of Christmas behind us and the hopes of a prosperous New Year ahead, we Chanters continue to please those fortunate enough to be within the sounds of our melodious award winning voices. In the coming year we hope to please with our sounds and deliver to your ears tones to be always pleasing.

“Shrine land” is busy with Nobles going about their philanthropic work with expectations that they hope the future success of our efforts holds for our kids in this New Year.

The Chanters’ future is hinged on the group of worthy new officers leading us in the direction of bettering ourselves to a point beyond any previous year. They are listed above and we have hope that these Nobles have more success than any officers who have ever led the Chanters in years passed.

This is the time his Illustrious Sir Kyle McEvoyy and First Lady Kerry retire from office. The Chanters very much appreciate their service and wish them every future happiness.

We will like to thank all fellow Nobles for making our time as pleasurable as it could ever be with such a wonderful organization as our Moolah.

Director- Dave Glenn 314-560-4431by Jim Hubeli At the Fall Ceremonial on Nov. 17, the day ended with a shrimp and sausage boil with potatoes put together by Potentate Kyle and First Lady Kerry and their crew. We all enjoyed this different feast and there was plenty of food for everyone. Right before this was the Masters Golf Tournament with courses in many of the unit rooms. Our President Dave Glenn with help from Christian Wester-mayer put together a tough par 3 hole with green carpet for putting. We had plenty of players come through and scores were recorded. Prizes were awarded at the shrimp boil later.

At the Drum Corps meeting on Nov. 10, the following officers were elected for 2019. Director - Rick Gwydir, Drum Major - Dave Glenn, Presi-dent - Richard Watts, Vice President - Christian Westermayer, Secretary - Rick Gwydir, Treasurer - Dave Glenn, Sgt. at Arms - Joe Shapiro, Exec-utive Committee - Don Baur and Tom Wigginton, TCAA Directors - Bob Atwell, Jay Traxel and Jim Hubeli. The Hospital Reception Committee Christmas Party was held on Friday, December 7. Attend-ees were treated to a wonderful meal, great company, and Christmas Carols.

The Racquet Ruckus racquetball tournament was held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Vetta near 270 and Tesson Ferry. The on-line silent auction (which began on November, 22nd ) ended on December 9th. As always, the orga-nizer Bob Berry did an outstanding job running both the racquetball tournament and the Silent Auction. The money collected will be used at our St. Louis Hospital to fund things not paid for by Tampa, including Hand Camp, Dobbs Bars and prosthetic supplies for POPs, food for Research patients and their families, PT/OT equipment, Pain-management materials, and BBQs for Hospital patients, families, and staff. Over the past 7 years that Bob has run this event, he has donated over $320,000 to our St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children. We all owe Bob a gigantic “Well Done” and “Thank You” for all his efforts for the Hospital patients.

Committee responsibilities include collecting the password at Stated Meetings, running the Shrine Gift Shop, collecting tickets and donations at Shrine meals, and other duties requested by the Potentate. Our certified members conduct BBQs at the Hospital for patients, their families, and staff and also provide tours of the Hospital. Some Committee members are volunteers who staff the reception desk at the Hospital to greet and welcome our patients and their families and to provide a small gift to each child when they leave. Additional volunteers are always needed to help at the Hospital during clinic hours in the morning, afternoon, or both. If you are available, please contact President Bill Bradford at (314) 974-3084.

Our Shriners Hospital for Children sees on average 800 patients per month in the outpatient clinc. This does not include patients for surger-ies, the POPS Department, Research, or therapy visits, all who also receive a toy upon departing the Hospital. This brings the total to more than 1,000 children and toys a month, and this does not include the siblings of patients who also

receive a toy upon departing our Hospital. To help fund the purchase of these toys, the Committee vot-ed to donate $1,000 to the TCAA Toy Chest Fund.

If you like to interact with and support your fellow Nobles and our Shriner Kids and their families, then we would love to have you join us. Because of the responsibilities of the Committee members at Stat-ed Meetings, we now meet the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm.

Its about time to start practicing for the skits. We will meet every Monday until the skit director feels that we are Oscar ready. This probably means every Monday because he is a tough taskmaster. Not only do we have to get timing down but we have to be able to move the props effienctly to and from the ring. Also if you do not have a part in the skits your presense on the ring is important to the act itself. So hopefully you all can dance while sitting.

Future events coming up will include the R-V show and Home show which help to promote our circus. Get you circus tickets from Gonzo (Erie Gonzalez-Rubio) our man in charge of sales. By the way thats another thankless job so thanks Gonzo for volunteering again.

We need everyone ready for the upcoming America's Got Talent Show. Merlin (Tom Dolan) informed me that he made it to the second round where he will compete on TV against the other contestants in Las Vegas in February. He told me that his talent has something to do with his toes but would not go any further. He just said we have to watch and vote for him. So get ready to dial brothers.

Happy New Year to all Nobles and their Ladies from YOMO.

We are YOMO, the guys in the little yellow cars you see in parades. Right now we are in our clean up, repair, get ready for the year mode. We will start with the Mardi Gras in February, then finish up in December. We will do about 100 events a year, including everything from parades to events where we have the cars for display. We all owe a huge thank you to Cpt Greg Heins, and his two Lieutenant’s Stan Zurosky, Kevin Heins for all their hard work during the year for the Mini Patrol. Also a thank you to Rob Hynes and his lady Nikki for great work on making our static displays go so smoothly.

A thank you for a job well done goes to our retiring president Rick Smith and his Lady Susan for all their hard work in 2018. We also owe a debt of gratitude to retiring Direc-tor Gary Holland, for his many years of advice and help. Fortunately Illustrious Sir Lenny Martin has agreed to be our new director.

A thank you to Paul Smith for his excellent job, gathering donations for the YOWAY 250.

Lastly a thank you to Dave Schmucker for updat-ing our by-laws.

President Stan and his Lady Gretchen have a fun year planned for us. We also love to include our ladies as much as possible. We have several family events during the year.

We look forward to helping Illustrious Sir Don Taylor making this one of the best years ever.

Greetings Brethren. Hope you all had a wonder-ful holiday season and are ready to swing into motion for this year’s circus.

This is a fairly quiet time of year for our unit since most of the festivals we participate in take place in the summer and fall. We can use this time for planning both for the circus and for our unit events. This is a perfect time for brothers consid-ering joining us to get to know us in our informal meetings before the heavy season kicks off. Just call one of us for details about our next meeting.

Our best for a happy, blessed New Year for all, including our Shriners’ kids and their families.

Well a new year is starting and hopefully we all enjoyed a Tiger win at the Liberty Bowl. Things continue to stay busy at Tiger Shrine. Make it a news year’s resolution to get more involved. Congratulations to our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Don Taylor and his Divan. Tiger is looking forward to 2019!!

Due to the weather in November our Frog Leg dinner was postponed. At this writing it is planned for our January meeting which will be held on January 28. Come out and enjoy some good ole frog legs.

Be sure and mark your calendar for our installation of officers. It will be held on 2/16/19 in Mexico at the Elks lodge. This is the same location as before and it is always a good time. Look for details in the mail as we get closer to the event. I am sure we will have a bus for the trip.

The January meeting will be 1/28/19. Folks start showing up around 5:30pm. Come out and enjoy the club and have a good meal and some cool drinks.

The Tiger Shrine club is located at 2315 N Stadium Blvd, Columbia, MO 65202.

President: Dave Larkin 636-734-7718 We had one of the best Holiday Parties in the his-tory of Daniel Boone! Besides the huge turnout, the appetizers were fantastic (a big thank you to everyone that brought one to share), the food was outstanding. Also, back by popular demand we had Anita Rosamond as our entertainment and she brought a Sax player with her that really added a special level of entertainment. My favor-ite part was seeing the special musical talents of our own members. But, above all the highlight of the evening was the fellowship within our Shrine Club. We are truly blessed to have such a friend-ly group of nobles and Ladies.

We are a friendly and sociable group that include our Ladies in all our activities. We meet on the last Thursday of the month at JJ’s Restaurant in O’Fallon. Arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 for dinner. We order off the menu and have separate checks. After dinner (around 7:30) the guys have a meeting and the Ladies play bunko.

Whether you are a member of Daniel Boone, or not -- we would love to have you and your Lady join us. We’ll make sure that you and your Lady are greeted when you arrive and that you’ll al-ways feel welcome. If you want to join us for one of our dinners – just show up!!!

March is just around the corner and the Circus right on it’s heels. It is the most fun time of the year for us because we get to work with the Nobles from our Shrine. So keep March in mind and get ready to work for the Children.

March is also a change of officers for Sydyk. We will make sure the date and time of our installation is printed here.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!It is with great joy that we begin a new year that is hoped to be filled with all good things for all of us.

At our December meeting, we installed our new officers:Christine Dieckhaus, PresidentPatricia Aaron, Vice PresidentKathy Meyers, SecretaryKathy Kelly, Treasurer.

Congratulations to Darlene Newman on a great year as president. We had a fun year!!

We had a great time at the luncheon and sold lots of goodies at our bake sale. Hus-bands were invited and many were in attendance. The social hour began at 10:30 with wine and Hors D’oeuvre’s. Lunch was served at noon.

Do you wish you could join Temple Club and have a lot of fun while helping support the Temple but you don’t know if you’re eligible? Women 18 or older recommended by a Temple Club member or related to a Shriner in good standing in any Shrine Tem-ple, preferable by – but not limited to – birth, marriage or adoption shall be entitled to membership in Temple Club. Dues are $12 per year. We’d love to have you as part of our fun friends. Call any of us or ask us at Bunko.

Here’s wishing you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
