Throughananalysisofmodemistliteratureandpoetry(D.H.Lawrence)and
philosophy(WilliamJames,DeleuzeandGuattari,HegelandHeidegger),this
paperexplorestheideasofripping,tearingandslittingtherent.Whilethisfbrthe
mostpartmayappeararatherstrangechoiceoftopic,itisintimatelyboundtothe
intellecmalhistoryoftheearlypartofthe20'hcenturyandtothenaturaldisasters
whichblighttheplanet.Atthecentreoftheanalysisisaconsiderationofchaosand
crisis.ThecruxofthematterpertainstothenotionoftheveilandZe〃j“e"he〃
ortearinginseveraloftheafbrementionedwriters.'hthefirstpartofthepaper,
