Directors’ Notes

From Mrs. Laura Biancalana:

On behalf of the cast, crew, directors, faculty, and staff of Rosary High School, welcome to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown! Whether you are watching in person or via livestream, we appreciate your support of the arts and our young artists!

Choosing a musical to present during this unprecedented time proved a challenge, as we searched for options for our willing students while adhering to safety guidelines. We very quickly realized, however, that the challenges offered us an amazing opportunity. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown tells the story of a group of young people expressing their joys, their frustrations, their triumphs and defeats, all while realizing that true friendship and love will see them through. For this group of Rosary girls, this musical encouraged them to lean in to the sisterhood and recognize that we can get through anything when surrounded by those we love.

As usual, we couldn’t do this without the incredible support of so many! Thank you to Ms. McMahon and Ms. Johnson for their help and encouragement. Thank you to Mr. Gurbal, our lead set builder, and his incredible build team who brought designs to life. We were once again gifted by the presence of Mrs. Scheel, our costume designer extraordinaire. She brings an amazing combination of creativity and craftiness, and her team quickly shopped, sewed, and hot-glued beautiful costumes that are iconic and perfectly suited to our girls. Mrs. Danklefsen skillfully assisted with all things publicity, from taking pictures to designing a poster to helping to set up ticket ordering. We welcomed Rosary graduate Angela Kvitek back to Rosary to fill the role of set painter, grateful for her hard work and creativity! And a special thank you to my family for their unwavering support and love.

It continues to be my honor to work with Megan Drahos. Is there anything she can’t or doesn’t do? You may already know of her

superior musicianship, but she is also our intrepid producer, managing calendars, supplies, and all of the moving pieces of the show. I am blessed to work with Megan and call her my friend.

Charlie Brown, self-described as someone who doesn’t give up easily, is my new-found hero. No, he doesn’t seem to do a lot well, and he is gullible and often defeated. But Charlie Brown also keeps trying, whether it is flying a kite or getting that little red-haired girl to notice him. And, as sung in the final song of the show, Charlie Brown ultimately discovers the happiness found in the everyday moments, both in the time we spend alone and in the time spent together. In the end, Charlie Brown shows all of us, through his kind heart and tenacity, that he really is a good man, and it doesn’t get much better than enjoying the simple pleasures of life, surrounded by the people you love and who love you.

Directors’ NotesFrom Ms. Megan Drahos:

I have had the privilege of working with such dedicated students and musicians in my eighth show at Rosary. In these uncertain pandemic times, we are all very grateful to the Rosary Administration to be able to perform and inspire through the art of music and theater. Everyone has worked tirelessly to bring this story filled with charm, humor, joy, trials, tribulations and a whole lot of happiness to the stage. Happiness is great musical theater! With charm, wit, and heart, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown explores life through the eyes of Charlie Brown and his friends in the Peanuts gang. The songs are memorable, the characters lovable, and the lessons poignant and funny. In this revue of songs and vignettes, based on the beloved Charles Schulz comic strip, Charlie Brown and his friends explore life’s great questions as they play baseball, struggle with homework, sing songs, and celebrate the joy of friendship.

Special thanks to the cast and musicians who have taken on these catchy tunes with great energy and skill. Each rehearsal was filled with a lot of laughter with this wonderful gang of Peanuts. I could not be more proud of their hard work, dedication, and passion throughout the six short weeks of rehearsal. A great happiness of mine is the opportunity to work with, and be impacted by, this amazing next generation!

It’s been an honor to work with Laura Biancalana! I’m always inspired by her remarkable vision as well as her creative blocking and choreography that bring these stories to life. I love collaborating with her, sharing many laughs, and being on the same wavelength during these musical journeys. She is a very gifted director who motivates students to truly embody their character. I’m thankful to have such a thoughtful friend, an outstanding colleague, and a loyal confidant during these adventures.

This show wouldn’t be possible without the help of the phenomenal Rosary community of parent volunteers! I’m blessed to have so many parents willing to give their time, talents, and treasure. Jeff Gurbal has been hard at work on the set since the show was first announced! He was constantly making plans, building, and coordinating with Dan Piscoran and the fantastic set build team. I’m also very grateful to Angela Kvitek (‘17), one of my talented former students with a heart of gold, who brought the set to life with her beautiful painting and design ideas!

Special thanks to all of the parents that have helped with costumes, tech week dinners, show special events, carpooling and so much more! Your fabulous work behind the scenes does not go unnoticed. Gretchen Scheel was an incredible blessing once again coordinating all of the costumes as well as the parent volunteers. We are so grateful to you and your talented costume team that added such a fun dimension to the show.

Many thanks also to the Rosary High School faculty, staff, and administration for their support. I want to especially thank Vicki Danklefsen and Mary Hendrian for their incredible efforts and kind hearts! Vicki once again worked wonders on the fabulous poster and the beautiful playbill with her unmatched creativity and keen

We thank you and hope you too will enjoy a day in the life of Charlie Brown!
