First Apparition

On December 9, 1531, while taking a walkby the hill of Tepeyac, Juan Diego heard asweet voice that called to him from thesummit: “Juan Diego, littlest of my children,I desire so much, I would like that a churchbe built for me in this place ...”

El 9 Diciembre de 1531, al pasar por elcerro del Tepeyac, Juan Diego escuchó unadulce voz desde la cumbre lo llamaba“Juanito, el más pequeño de mis hijos,mucho deseo, mucho quisiera que en estelugar se me construya un templo ...”

Second Apparition

On December 10, 1531, JuanDiego again sees the Holy Virgin,who reveals her identity: “I am theImmaculate Ever Virgin HolyMary, Mother of the most trueGod for everyone that lives.” Shealso makes an appointment tomeet him the following day.

Third Apparition

At 6 o’clock in the morning, December 12,1531, Juan Diego finds the Lady of theHeavens and she said: “Let nothing troubleyou, nothing disturb you. Your uncle hasalready been healed. Am I not here? Am Inot your mother?” Later she sent him to thehilltop to cut roses. The Virgin touchedthem and she sent Diego with the flowers toBishop Zumárraga as the requested proof.

Fourth Apparition

8On December 12, 1531, in front of BishopJuan de Zumárraga, Juan Diego unfolds his“ayate tilma.” While the rosesfall to the ground, theprodigious image of the everVirgin, Holy Mary ofGuadalupe appears on the“tilma.”

Tercera Aparición

A las 6 de la mañana del 12 Diciembre de1531, Juan Diego encuentra al la Señora delCielo que le dice “Que nada te inquiete,que nada te perturbe, tu tío ya sanó. ¿Noestoy Yo aquí que soy tu madre ...? You have always helped me to resolve mymisfortunes; you have been myunconditional advocate before your Son,Jesus Christ, with whom you painfullysuffered when he was crucified for our sins. I beg you my Mother; continue intercedingto your Divine Son for me, for my family,and for all those who carry you in theirhearts.

Give me your encouragement, dear Virginof Guadalupe, to face life with integrity andgrant me the grace of enjoying yourpresence daily, since I feel secure when Iam close to you, protected and confident inyour care.

Conserve in our souls the precious gift ofdivine grace. Make us be faithful to the willof God, in such a way that His reign willalways spread more and more in all hearts,families, and in our nation.

What more powerfulreason to encourage my trust and plead youto open the bosom of your mercies, whileremembering the broad power that thedivine omnipotence of the Lord gave you tofavor mortals? Deign to imprint in my soulthe image of the Most High, which will erasemy faults. Don't let my offenses and badhabits affect your compassion. At daybreak one Saturday morning in 1531,on the very first days of the month ofDecember, an Indian named Juan Diegowas going from the village where he lived toTlatelolco in order to take part in divineworship and listen to God’s command-ments. When he came near the hill calledTepeyac, dawn had already come, and JuanDiego heard someone calling him from thevery top of the hill: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito.”

He went up the hill and caught sight of alady of unearthly grandeur whose clothingwas as radiant as the sun. She said to him inwords both gentle and courteous: “Juanito,the humblest of my children, know andunderstand that I am the ever virgin Mary,Mother of the true God through whom allthings live. It is my ardent desire that achurch be erected here so that in it I canshow and bestow my love, compassion,help, and protection to all who inhabit thisland and to those others who love me, thatthey might call upon and confide in me. Goto the Bishop of Mexico to make known tohim what I greatly desire. Go and put allyour efforts into this.”

Un sábado de mil quinientos treinta y uno,a pocos días del mes de diciembre, un indiode nombre Juan Diego iba muy demadrugada del pueblo en que residía aTlatelolco, a tomar parte en el culto divinoy a escuchar los mandatos de Dios. Al llegarjunto al cerrillo llamado Tepeyac, amanecía,y escuchó que le llamaban de arriba delcerrillo: «Juanito, Juan Dieguito.»

Él subió a la cumbre y vio a una señora desobrehumana grandeza, cuyo vestido eraradiante como el sol, la cual, con palabramuy blanda y cortés, le dijo: «Juanito, el máspequeño de mis hijos, sabe y ten entendidoque yo soy la siempre Virgen María, Madredel verdadero Dios por quien se vive.Deseo vivamente que se me erija aquí untemplo, para en él mostrar y prodigar todomi amor, compasión, auxilio y defensa atodos los moradores de esta tierra y a losdemás amadores míos que me invoquen yen mí confíen. Ve al Obispo de México amanifestarle lo que mucho deseo. Anda ypon en ello todo tu esfuerzo.»

Cuando llegó Juan Diego a presencia delObispo don fray Juan de Zumárraga,

Juan Diego returned to the hilltop where theHeavenly Lady was waiting, and he said toher: “My Lady, my maiden, I presentedyour message to the Bishop, but it seemedthat he did not think it was the truth. Forthis reason I beg you to entrust yourmessage to someone more illustrious whomight convey it in order that they maybelieve it, for I am only an insignificantman.”

She answered him: “Humblest of my sons,I ask that tomorrow you again go to see theBishop and tell him that I, the ever virginholy Mary, Mother of God, am the one whopersonally sent you.”

But on the following day, Sunday, theBishop again did not believe Juan Diegoand told him that some sign was necessaryso that he could believe that it was theHeavenly Lady herself who sent him. Andthen he dismissed Juan Diego.

On Monday Juan Diego did not return. Hisuncle, Juan Bernardino, became very ill,and at night asked Juan to go to Tlatelolcoat daybreak to call a priest to hear hisconfession.

Juan Diego set out on Tuesday, but he wentaround the hill and passed on the otherside, toward the east, so as to arrive quickly

Ella le respondió: «Mucho te ruego, hijomío el más pequeño, que otra vez vayasmañana a ver al Obispo y le digas que yo enpersona, la siempre Virgen santa María,Madre de Dios, soy quien te envío.»

Pero al día siguiente, domingo, el Obispotampoco le dio crédito y le dijo que era muynecesaria alguna señal para que se lepudiera creer que le enviaba la mismaSeñora del Cielo. Y le despidió.

El lunes, Juan Diego ya no volvió. Su tíoJuan Bernardino se puso muy grave y, porla noche, le rogó que fuera a Tlatelolco muyde madrugada a llamar un sacerdote quefuera a confesarle.

Salió Juan Diego el martes, pero dio vueltaal cerrillo y pasó al otro lado, hacia eloriente, para llegar pronto a México y que

Are you not,fortunately, in my care? Do not let youruncle’s illness distress you. It is certain thathe has already been cured. Go up to thehilltop, my son, where you will find flowersof various kinds. Cut them, and bring theminto my presence.”

When Juan Diego reached the peak, he wasastonished that so many Castilian roses hadburst forth at a time when the frost wassevere. He carried the roses in the folds ofhis tilma (mantle) to the Heavenly Lady.She said to him: “My son, this is the proofand the sign which you will bring to theBishop so that he will see my will in it. Youare my ambassador, very worthy of trust.”

Juan Diego set out on his way, now contentand sure of succeeding. On arriving in theBishop’s presence, he told him: “My lord, Idid what you asked. The Heavenly Ladycomplied with your request and fulfilled it.She sent me to the hilltop to cut someCastilian roses and told me to bring them toyou in person. And this I am doing, so thatyou can see in them the sign you seek inorder to carry out her will. Here they are;receive them.”

Cuando Juan Diego llegó a la cumbre, seasombró muchísimo de que hubiesenbrotado tantas exquisitas rosas de Castilla,porque a la sazón encrudecía el hielo, y lasllevó en los pliegues de su tilma a la Señoradel Cielo. Ella le dijo: «Hijo mío, ésta es laprueba y señal que llevarás al Obispo paraque vea en ella mi voluntad. Tú eres miembajador muy digno de confianza.»

Juan Diego se puso en camino, ya contentoy seguro de salir bien. Al llegar a lapresencia del Obispo, le dijo: «Señor, hicelo que me ordenaste. La Señora del Cielocondescendió a tu recado y lo cumplió. Medespachó a la cumbre del cerrillo a quefuese a cortar varias rosas de Castilla, y medijo que te las trajera y que a ti en persona telas diera. Y así lo hago, para que en ellasveas la señal que pides y cumplas suvoluntad. Helas aquí, recíbelas.»

The whole city was stirred and came to seeand admire her venerable image and tooffer prayers to her; and following thecommand which the same Heavenly Ladygave to Juan Bernardino when she restoredhim to health, they called her by the namethat she herself had used: “the ever virginholy Mary of Guadalupe.”
