Multiple Choice Questions

Short Answer Questions

Short-answer questions are open-ended questions that require students to create an answer. They

are commonly used in examinations to assess the basic knowledge and understanding (low cognitive

levels) of a topic before more in-depth assessment questions are asked on the topic.

Short Essay Questions

Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence answer. They ask students

to demonstrate a deeper understanding of Wonder by describing what they have read, rather than

just recalling it. The short essay questions evaluate not only whether students have read the

material, but also how well they understand and can apply it. They require more thought than a

multiple choice question, but are shorter than the essay questions.

Short Essay Questions Key

1. What two things does Julian share about himself the first day of school in homeroom?

Julian shares that the number one thing he wants to say is that he just got Battleground Mystic for his Wii. The second thing he says is that his family got a ping pong table that summer.

2. What is August thinking about when Ms. Petosa calls his name and asks him to share two things about himself?

August is thinking about "like a lamb to the slaughter." He looked up the phrase and discovered that it was said about someone who goes somewhere calmly, not knowing that something unpleasant is going to happen to him. That is how he feels as Mrs. Petosa calls his name.

3. What is the first assignment Mr. Browne's gives the students?

Mr. Browne writes a precept on the board, and tells everyone to write it in a section of their notebooks. Then every month, he tells them he will write a new precept for them to copy. They will discuss the precept, and then at the end of the month, they will write an essay discussing what the precept means to them.

4. What do August and Summer talk about during lunch on the first day of school?

August and Summer talk about summer names. She comments that their names are similar because they're both summer names. Then she suggests they make the table just for kids with summer names. They discuss names that would and would not fit.

5. What reactions does August get when he cuts off the braid on the back of his head?

August's dad notices that he cut the braid first. He tells August that he never really liked that. His mother wonders if someone made fun of him for it. Via asks if he told Christopher, and then says she can't believe he would just cut it off like that.

6. How does August describe his face at bedtime after his first day at school?

August says that his eyes come down too far. His cheeks look punched in, and his mouth looks like the mouth of a tortoise.

7. Why is the rest of September difficult for August?

The rest of September is hard. August isn't used to getting up early in the morning. He isn't used to homework or quizzes. He doesn't like the fact that he doesn't have free time anymore because there's always something to do for school. Plus, being at school is awful, as the kids try not to stare at him and take the long way around him as if to avoid bumping into him.
