Wishing all parishioners and visitors a happy and Holy Easter! Dear Parishioners, 1. Easter Joy The Psalm for Easter Sunday says, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Above all days, Easter is a day of joy. But what is joy? The answer St. Francis gave to this question is fa- mous. St. Francis said to his Brother Leo, “When we come to St. Mary of the Angels [our house], soaked by the rain and frozen by the cold, all soiled with mud and suffering from hunger, and we ring at the gate of the place and the brother porter comes and says angrily: ‘Who are you?’ And we say: ‘We are two of your brothers.’ And … he does not open for us, but makes us stand outside in the snow and rain, cold and hungry, until night falls—then if we endure all those insults and cruel rebuffs patiently, … oh, Brother Leo, … perfect joy is there!” Whatever we may think of St. Francis’s explanation of perfect joy, Easter reminds us that Francis’s kind of joy is not the end of the story. At Easter, we celebrate the other kind of joy, the kind each of us longs for, when every tear is wiped away, and there is no sorrow anymore - no more suffering from weather or hunger or hurtful human beings. As we sing in the much-loved hymn by Fr. John Foley, SJ, at Easter there is only “the cross and passion past; dark night is done, bright morning come at last!” When we ourselves rise to meet our risen Lord, in that bright morning we will hear the Lord say, “Come away, beloved. The winter is past; the rain is gone, and the flowers return to the earth” (Song of Songs 2:10-12). In the loving union of that encoun- ter, all the heartbrokenness of our lives will be redeemed. That will be perfect joy. If all we had was the joy St. Francis describes, our courage might fail us in this life. Easter celebrates now the perfect joy waiting for us when we and all creation are reborn with our resurrected Lord into the everlasting love of God. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. 21st April, 2019 - Year C EASTER SUNDAY of the RESURRECTION of the LORD ALL HALLOWS’ PARISH CHURCH 2 Halley Street FIVE DOCK 2046 Administrator: Fr Matthew Solomon Deacon: Rev. The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us – all of us.

And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will re-ceive. This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mer-cy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spir-itual director, wrote a diary recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. One of Our Lord's instructions to St. Faustina was to pray and offer the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy (https://www.thedivinemercy.org/eadm/praying.php ) for sin-ners and especially the dying, saying: "...when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand be-tween My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Savior" (Diary, 1541). Earlier, our Lord said to her, "At the hour of their death, I defend as My own glory every soul that will say this chaplet; or when others say it for a dying person, the indulgence is the same" (Diary, 811). It is amazing that we can, by our cooperation with Jesus' requests, assist in the final moments of those who are dying and in need of His mercy. SUNDAY 28 APRIL IS THE FEAST OF THE DIVINE MERCY

In accordance with Jesus’ request that the First Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mercy, the image of the Divine Mercy will be solemnly blessed and venerated after all Masses at All Hallows, and the Prayer given to St Faustina by Jesus will be recited. See below To ensure that the faithful would observe this day with intense devotion, Pope John Paul ll established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence. This indulgence is granted to those who go to Confession (on or close to the feast day), receive Holy Communion, pray for the intentions of the Pope on the Sunday after Easter, and is free from all attachment to sin. Prayer in honour of the Divine Mercy should also be recited on the day. Divine Mercy prayer leaflets will be left in the pews. Jesus also asked that veneration of the hour of his death, be given particular emphasis. This is the Hour of Great Mercy. Jesus told St Faustina: “At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world…In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion…” “You can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world – mercy triumphed over justice.”

APPROPRIATE PRAYER FOR THE HOUR

OF GREAT MERCY (THREE O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON) AND ON THE FEAST OF

DIVINE MERCY

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up

for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You.

So, You're a Catholic? See how you scored on last week's

quiz Q1. Why does the Catholic Church

believe Christ is really present in the Eucharist?

A: As Catholics, we believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucha-rist because Jesus tells us this is true in the Bible: “I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the

wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the liv-ing bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.....; Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you

have no life in you; ...." (John 6:48-56). The doctrine of the Real Presence that we believe today was believed by the earliest

Christians 2,000 years ago!

Q2. Where does the Pope get his authority to lead the Church on earth?

A: In Matthew 16:18, Jesus makes his intention clear to pass on authority to lead the Church to Peter and the Apostles. Christ

tells Peter that he is the rock on which He will build His church. The term apostolic succession refers to the line of bish-ops that stretches all the way back to the apostles—to Peter—

the first Pope. Apostolic tradition (the authentic teaching of the apostles) was handed from Christ to the apostles, and from them to their successors. This unbroken line of popes (the bishops of

Rome) and all other bishops have guided the Church for the past 2,000 years, just as Christ intended.

Q3. The Bible says that Jesus had brothers and sisters, but the

Church teaches that Mary was a perpetual virgin. How can this be reconciled?

A: Mark 6:3 refers to Jesus as "..... the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses, and Judas and Simon, and are not His sis-

ters here with us?” This was because there was no word for cousin, or for nephew or niece, or for aunt or uncle in ancient Hebrew or Aramaic – the words that the Jews used in all those instances were “brother” or “sister.” An example of this can be seen in Gen 14:14, where Lot, who was Abraham’s nephew, is

called his brother.

Q4. Why can't women be priests? A: The Church's teaching that only men can be ordained to the priesthood has its origins in the teaching and practices estab-

lished by Christ. While He was on earth, Jesus chose men to be His apostles and He passed on authority to these men to carry

out His work of preaching the good news (Luke 9:1-2) and for-giving sins (John 20:23). The Catechism of the Catholic Church

explains, “The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason, the ordination

of women is not possible” (CCC 1577).

Q5. Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest rather than going directly to God?

A. The quick answer is because that’s the way God wants us to do it. In James 5:16, God commands us to “confess our sins to one another.” Scripture does not say confess your sins straight

to God and only to God…it says confess your sins to one anoth-er. In Matthew 9:6, Jesus tells us that He was given authority on earth to forgive sins and He then explains, that this authority is given to “men”…plural. In John 20:21-23, the first thing Jesus

says to the gathered disciples on the night of His resurrection? is ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so, I send you.'” How did the Father send Jesus? The Father sent Jesus

with the authority on earth to forgive sins“ and that is what Je-sus is sending the disciples to do - He said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if

you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

POPE’S COLUMN

In the Passion, Three Prayers to the Father Holy Father Encourages Praying of ‘Our Father’ During Easter Pope Francis focused on prayer during his April 17, 2019, General Audience in St. Peter’s Square. But it wasn’t prayer in general, but the prayers Jesus offered during his Passion. The Holy Father departed from his series of commentaries on the “Our Father” and, instead, reflected on the words of prayer Jesus said to the Father during his time of suffering. The First Prayer: After the Last Supper: The Lord “lifted up His eyes to Heaven and said: Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son — and then — glorify Thou Me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was made’ (John 17:1.5).” “Jesus asks for glory, a request that seems paradoxical while the Passion is imminent,” the Pope said “What kind of glory is it? In the Bible, glory indicates God’s revealing Himself; it’s the distinct sign of His saving presence among men. Now Jesus is He who manifests definitively the presence and salvation of God. And He does so at Easter: raised on the cross, He is glori-fied (Cf. John 12:23-33).” The Second Prayer: Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. He calls the Father “Abba” – a word the Pope recalls is more like “daddy”, close and tender. “He experiences all the anguish of what awaits Him: betrayal, contempt, suffering, and failure,” Francis explained. “In trial, Jesus teaches us to embrace the Father, because in prayer to Him there is the strength to go forward in sorrow. In toil, prayer is relief, entrustment, and comfort. In the abandonment of all, in His interior desolation, Jesus isn’t alone; He is with the Father.” The Third Prayer: From the cross, Jesus prays, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”. “Jesus prays for those that were wicked to Him, for His killers,” the Holy Father reminded the audience. “The Gospel specifies that this prayer happened at the moment of the crucifixion. It was probably the moment of the most acute pain when the nails were hammered into His wrists and His feet. Here, at the summit of pain, He reaches the apex of love: forgiveness comes, namely, the gift of the umpteenth power, which breaks the circle of evil.” Pope Francis concluded his commentary by encouraging the praying of the “Our Father” during Easter: “Praying the Our Father" in these days, we can ask for one of these graces: to live our days for the glory of God, namely, to live with love; to be able to entrust ourselves to the Father in trials and say ‘Daddy’ to the Father and find in the encounter with the Father the forgiveness and courage to forgive. Both things go together. The Father forgives us, but He gives us the courage to be able to forgive.”
