[email protected] OF DIRECTORS MEETING – SEPTEMBER 20
The SPE Gulf Coast Section is very much analogous to the above mentioned quote. Being the biggest, and in my
opinion, thebestSPEsectionintheworld, oursectionis comprised of strong leaders, the best technical talent andincrediblyself-drivenvolunteerswhohaveawell-definedmissiontowardstheupliftmentof ourindustryand society.
Awholeheartedwelcometoallof youwhoformtheconstantlygrowingSPE-GCSfamilyaswecommencethe2018-2019year.ThosewhoattendedthekickoffmeetinginAugustsawandheardwhatthesectionmanagedto achieve during the 2017-2018 year. With strong leadership, recovering oil prices and tremendous activity withinthesociety, wehavegonefromstrongtostrongerinthepastfouryearssincethedownturn.
US energy companies have continued to add rigs (1057 rigs as of August 10, 2018 – 108 more than this time last year) despite recent decline in prices due to trade tensionsbetweentheUSandChina.GoldmanSachsisstill predicting an increase to WTI prices for the year, at $70 per barrel, and several of the recently concluded earnings calls have indicated an increase in capital spendingfor2018.Thecomingfewmonthswillbeveryinteresting and exciting for our industry.
As I indicated in last month’s Connect, there are a numberof newinitiativesthatIbelievewillserveasimportant advancements and highly critical navigation tools for our membership in the coming year. In addition to being highly focused on maintaining the productivity of ourdynamic‘legacystudygroups’,wewillalsofocusonthedevelopmentof thenewones.WehaveaddedDataAnalytics,DigitalTransformation,ComputationalFluidDynamics and Geomechanics to our technical line-up. The chairs for all of these study groups and committees
arelistedinthedirectoryinthebackof eachnewsletterissue,andIencourageyoutoreachouttothemwithquestions and suggestions.
Goingintothe2018-2019SPEyear,wehavefournewoneday technical events planned:
• Completions and Production Symposium; Challenges and Perspectives – scheduled on September 19, 2018
• Unconventional Reservoir Completion Seminar-Operator Perspectives on March 6th, 2019
• Drilling Transformation Study Group one day event – scheduled on May 10, 2019
• ComputationalFluidDynamicsonedayevent–planned to be held in Q1 2019
Additionally, the continuing education committee is introducingtheirfirst2-daytutorialonunconventionalresources.Dependingonhowwellthesetutorialsarereceived,SPE-GCSwillthinkaboutevolvingtheseintoacertificationprograminunconventionalreservoirs.
Focusingbacktoourindustry, itwasaveryinterestingandinformativeopeningplenarysessionattheURTECheld in July in Houston. With increased focus of data analytics,newcompletiontechnologiesandpotentiallyusingCO2toincreasetherecoveryfactors,wemightbegetting closer to the industry’s dream of 20% recovery factors in unconventional reservoirs. The best venue to witnessandhearaboutnewtechnologyinourindustryis the upcoming SPE Annual Technology Conference and Exhibition taking place in September in Dallas. I hope to meetsomeof youattheshow.

THE REST OF THE YARNThis month we continue our look back at the rise and fall of wildcatter Glenn McCarthy, as the funding falls short for most of his projects.
No one at the time understood that McCarthy didn’t have a fraction of the capital needed to complete the Shamrock Hotel, or any of his projects. HewascountingonEquitableLifeAssurance’s eagerness to produce it. Equitable Life’s board felt secure pushing mounds of cash at McCarthy since a 1948 analysis of his reserves valued his holdings at $73.5 million. His loans from Equitable Life
eventually reached a total of $51.8 million.Theloansdidn’tcomewithoutstrings, however, astheboardpushedMcCarthytodownsizetheShamrockproject and eliminate all other buildingsexceptthehotel.ThiswasfinebyMcCarthy,asthehotelwasallhereallywanted.

Next month, McCarthy moves from black gold to silver screen.

Formanyyearstheupstreamindustryrelied on viscosity as the principal designparameterwithrespecttorheology and particle suspension in hydraulic fracturing. Unfortunately, viscosity does not tell the entire story. More and more, the technical community is looking at elasticity in
addition to viscosity. Over time, it has become evident that elasticity is the more relevant variable in particulate suspension.BinderSciencenowhasfiveyearsof laboratoryandfieldexperienceusingMMviscoelasticpolymerfluidsacross the spectrum ranging from slikwaterFR’stocrosslinkedguargels.
