Course Information

The practice of Vipassana meditation is based on the teachings passed down by Lord Buddha over 2500 years ago.

This is a guided meditation course. The method is an intensive form of the Mahasi Sayadaw technique with sequences of mindful prostrations, walking and sitting meditations as taught by the Most Venerable Phra Prom MongkolVi (Ven. Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo).

Meditators will learn how to apply mindfulness on the body, feelings, mind and mind objects through simple and structured exercises.

All arising phenomena are labeled mentally.

(Ven. Phra Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo)

The Four Foundations of Mindfulness

Vipassana is based on the Four Satipattana – The Four Foundations of Mindfulness.

The word sati is derived from the Pali word sar, which means to remember, to recollect.

Sati means more than just memory or recollection. It means contemplation, reflection, recollection, heedfulness,

carefulness, collected attention, awareness or vigilance.

Sati is often translated as mindfulness.

Pattana means support, establishment, base, application, foundation.

The practice of mindfulness or sati, consists of moment to moment mindful contemplation with attentiveness and

recollection upon all activities of the body, feelings, mind and mind objects.

The Opening & Closing CeremonyAt the beginning of the retreat, meditators will participate in the traditional Opening Ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, mediators will take refuge with the Triple Gem, the Buddha, the Dhamma (his teachings) and the Sangha (his disciples).

Meditators will vow to honor the Eight Buddhist precepts during their stay and formally request the meditation instructions. The Eight Buddhist Precepts are the foundation for your retreat. Pure conduct is essential for your progress in meditation.

The Precepts ensure that we can provide a safe and peaceful dwelling for you to practice Insight Meditation.

Upon completion of the course, mediators will be invited to join the closing ceremony.
