Interaction with industry

IIM AHMEDABAD

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) was established in 1961. Led by space scientistDr. Vikram Sarabhai, eminent industrialist Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai and proactively supported by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Dr. Jivraj Mehta, a group of enlightened individuals took this path breaking initiative. This group ably wove together a coalition of five actors - the governments at the centre and the state, local industrialists, the Ford Foundation and the Harvard Business School, to establish the foundations of the Institute. Since then the institute has come a long way in being consistently ranked as the premier management school in the country by several national agencies. IIMA programmes are also ranked highly in several international rankings. In 2008, IIMA became the first management school in the country to be awarded EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation by the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development). The academic prowess of the institute is complemented by its architecture, conceived and designed by the renowned architect Louis Kahn. This 102 acre landscaped architectural marvel is an inspiration to many architects from around the world.

The greatest asset of the institute is its faculty. These paragons of intellect are reputed not only for their academic prowess but also for their industry exposure both, in India and abroad. Through their constant interaction with the world of practice, faculty members shape policy and also evolve the curricula and pedagogy. Education is imparted using both time tested pedagogy and contemporary tools to expose students to current management best practices. Alumni of this institute have shaped Indian and global industry over the years and are at the forefront of policy and decision making across the world. The institute also partners with leading institutions across the world through its exchange programmes to add to its diversity. Industry leaders, literary doyens and mavens from multiple fields enrich the institute through their regular interactions.

IIMA thus lives up to its motto: ‘Vidya Viniyogadvikasa’ — ‘development through the distribution or application of knowledge’.P

Professor Errol D’Souza

It is with immense pride that I introduce the 14 batch of the Armed Forces Programme (AFP) which is a six monthly residential course in Business Management for ocers of the armed forces at IIM Ahmedabad. The programme is designed to facilitate the smooth transition of these experienced and talented leaders from the uniformed services to mid level and senior positions in the corporate world. The current batch is a mix of 60 serving and retired ocers with the service bracket ranging from 09 to 37 years in fields as diverse as general administration to technical roles and operational responsibilities under conditions removed from the normal. What makes this group unique is that unlike similar programmes at other institutes, they are selected through an entrance exam-ination (conducted by IIM Ahmedabad). The popularity of the programme can be gauged from the fact that an increasing number apply for every succeeding course.

The 24 weeks programme is designed to interface the experience and skills inherent to these ocers and the requirements of the corporate world and also give them an exposure to the entrepreneurial world. This is done through our relevant and up to date content which has always been the pièce de rèsistance of IIM Ahmedabad. The participants have been exposed to all the core areas of management and current best practices in the industry. Each module has been curat-ed over the years by our team of experienced faculty based on industry and course feedback.

Our faculty uses pedagogy as diverse as case study method, industry visits, practical exercises, classroom instructions and video case studies to expose the batch to theoretical and practical aspects of various subjects. Renowned for its insightful training, the institute attracts not just its progeny but also leaders from diverse backgrounds, interacting with whom is facilitated during this residential programme. All through, the focus has been to ensure understanding and fostering the zeal for continued learning. This will channelize their experience and understanding towards the world that they are stepping out into, endowed with desired skill sets.

Industry feedback from the previous batches has been excellent and a sizeable number have made significant contributions at their new work places. We oer you a reservoir of trained and proven leaders endowed with managerial skills to choose from.

MESSAGE FROMTHE DEAN (PROGRAMMES)

Professor Shailesh Gandhi

It has been a pleasure interacting with the current batch of participants in the Armed Forces Programme (AFP). They represent a heterogenous mix of experience, understanding and skill sets. Each of these is required in certain measure in their new work places. The faculty at IIM Ahmedabad, through its vast experience both in industry and in academia, is suitably equipped to bridge the gap between corporate competence and the understanding of the ocers undergoing the programme. Towards this, the course participants have been exposed to the tools and techniques required in the corporate world. This exposure has taken on various forms; be it through our well established pedagogy of case studies and theoretical classes or interaction with leaders of industry who visit the institute. Ocers from the forces are known for their spirited approach in dealing with issues at hand. This has been amply displayed when they surmounted barriers of age and understanding and have displayed mental agility in grasping the subjects being taught in the institute. The course participants complemented the eorts made by the faculty through their receptiveness in understanding and assimilating the subjects. I am confident that the confluence of eorts of the faculty at this institute and experience of the ocers undergoing the course will immensely benefit the organizations that they will be joining.

FACULTY SPEAK

PROF SUNDARAVALLI NARAYANASWAMI

Interacting with ocers from the defence services during the Armed Forces programme is an enjoyable experience. They bring to the classroom their varied understanding of the important business function of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM). Their diverse experience in managing critical and time sensitive stores and supply chains is unique. Their ability to grasp the subject is tempered by the realization of its criticality. Incisive questions posed by the participants and their views on aspects related to LSCM indicate their understanding and ability to grasp the subject. Enriched with exposure provided to them, these ocers are ready to take on challenges in this field with their trademark mission v zeal. I wish them the very best in their future endeavours.

PROF CHETAN SOMAN

Ocers from the Armed Forces are adept at managing operations under varying conditions. They are, therefore, agile in their approach to operations and this strength of theirs was evident whilst interacting with them in my module on Operations Management. During this module, ocers’ class preparation, and meaningful engagement in & o-class discussions was really of the highest order. This year (AFP 18), we have a very good, rich-experienced, diverse group of 60 Ocers, chosen through an entrance examination. The participant-centered, case-based, immersive learning pedagogy followed at IIMA ensures that participants get wholesome exposure and are equipped to apply the rigors of management principles in their future assignments. I wish the course participants well in their future endeavours, be it at work or at continued education.

PROF GOUTAM DUTTA

Ocers from the armed forces are adept at managing projects. They bring to the institute their unique experiences in this domain. Yet they are keen to imbibe knowledge that is dierent from their experiences. This is evident from their insightful engagements in the class and perceptive approach to exercises. It is encouraging to note that they are keen to be intellectually challenged and look for opportunities to apply both, their experiences and the tools that they have been exposed to during the course in addressing issues related to project management. Many of them engaged in quality assurance and project management certifications even during the rigours of the course – an indicator that no mission is daunting and no challenge unsurmountable for the determined. It is personally gratifying to be a part of their aspirational journey of transformation to the corporate world. In them I see potential corporate leaders of the business world. I wish them well in their onward journey and invite potential recruiters to interact with them for their mutual benefit.

FACULTY SPEAK

PROF ANKUR SINHA

Decision making is perhaps the most important facet of leadership and management alike. It is both intuitive and based on rigorous assessment of information. Decision modeling aids in management by providing the leader the proverbial “crystal ball”. It was heartening to note that the current batch of ocers of the Armed Forces Programme undergoing the six-month residential course in business management at IIMA approached the subject with sincerity and unity of purpose. Exposed to the concept they are ready to apply it well to their future assignments. The course participants also took keen interest in the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship by requesting for a visit to the facility and being briefed on its activities. This shows that the participants have approached the institute as knowledge seekers and are keen to avail of any opportunity to learn. I wish them well in their endeavours and urge the industry to embrace this reservoir of focused professionals.

PROF SOBHESH KUMAR AGARWALLA

The present batch of ocers from the armed forces come from diverse understandings, experiences and educational backgrounds. Interacting with them at IIMA in the classroom however was an exhilarating experience as they come across as a cohesive team, unified in their desire to adapt and to learn and yet adding their flavor to the classroom. They have shown enthusiasm in grasping the subject and applying it to enhance their understanding. Their management skills and ability to adapt to the business environment coupled with the reorientation at IIMA, has prepared these ocers for a variety of roles in the middle and senior management levels in the corporate world. I wish them well in their endeavours. Industry and entrepreneurial partners alike are well advised to tap into this pool of talent and knowledge that would approach issues with mission like zeal.

PROF SANJAY VERMA

Interacting with ocers from the armed forces as part of the Armed Forces Programme is a stimulating experience. These ocers come with varying understandings, experiences and knowledge levels. Today they are at the crossroads of starting new careers and are acutely aware of the need to adapt and adopt. They have demonstrated keenness in learning and cohesiveness in their aim to learn. I have always sought to foster a spirit of learning in the minds of my students and enhance their skills in using computers and technology in the business context. These tools add rigour to the intuitional approach to business problems and solutions. The insights demonstrated by the participants in this course displayed their understanding of technology management. I am sure that the knowledge gained by the participants in the programme will stand them in good stead and they will enrich their new work places.

It is my privilege to teach in the Armed Forces Program of IIM Ahmedabad. We follow a case based pedagogy which demands participants to have a high degree of discipline for pre-class preparation, high enthusiasm for class discussion, and analytical mindset for decision making. I have always found AFP participants highly committed towards learning. They have proven abilities to push tasks beyond defined boundaries. We endeavor to reinforce their determination in a new direction and train them in management tools and techniques as they take the first steps of transformation and transition from army to the world of corporate. AFP participants are already leaders and strategists when they enter the program. Over six months, they are exposed to situations in several functional areas and industries. They supplement leadership skills with deep analytical thinking by learning tools, techniques, and management concepts. It is my strong belief that recruiters can benefit a lot by hiring AFP participants.

To survive in a highly competitive marketplace, data driven decision making has become the culture of any successful organization. Nowadays, organizations have access to huge amount of data in digital format which are either generated in house or are available from external sources. For finding solution to business problems, relevant data are to be identified, and analyzed using dierent statistical tools that facilitate discovering important patterns in the data, and finally the patterns are to be interpreted in the business context. Keeping this point in view, the business research methods are included in the curriculum of the Armed Forces Programme (AFP) at IIMA. Starting from the concept of probability it covers statistical inference, correlation and regression analysis. As always it is a pleasant experience to interact with the participants of AFP 2018. The insightful discussion in the class and beyond and their steadfastness to learn are indicative of their resolve to become valued professionals in the corporate world.

ANIL YADAVOperations Head (Plant) - KEC

“AFP course at IIMA is just what the doctor ordered for a veteran who is a ‘wannabe corporateur/entrepreneur’. The institution has a well-designed curriculum required for the veterans, keeping in mind their existing skill-sets & experience. IIMA prepares veterans in such a way that at the end of the course each AFPian is well equipped to handle diverse corporate roles or be an entrepreneur.”

JS GAVANKARAVP - Adani Defence and Aerospace

“The AFP Course is very well structured and much needed course to complement the leadership and managerial experiences of any Armed Forces Ocer. The ecosystem of armed forces, which trains every ocer for delivering results to precision within available resources even beyond the call of his duty. The AFP builds upon this experience and prepares the ocer to understand the industry processes and business requirements.”

HUSEIN J SAKERWALADGM (Risk Mitigation & Audit) - Adani Group"The transformation of skills acquired in the forces to those required in the corporate was facilitated by the engrossing curriculum conducted by the illustrious faculty at IIMA. This programme gave me the platform to upskill myself and enabled a smooth transition into a second career. I express my gratitude to the professors of IIMA and my peers for their guidance and support through the years."

SRAVAN MARUR

Every armed forces ocer comes with a unique set of diverse skills and a wealth of unmatched experience, which can add immense value to the wealth creation arena. However, his or her transition into a second career is hampered by the lack of a corporate management perspective. The Armed Forces Programme at IIM, Ahmedabad bridges this gap with scientific precision and artistic finesse. The curriculum is structured to provide an overview into the entire gamut of management precepts and practices. It is rigorous. It is demanding. It is enlightening!. The ocers participating in the programme, having been competitively selected, rise up magnificently to this challenge. At the end of it all, they emerge as champions. Warriors who continue to treasure their core values of integrity and loyalty. What more can one ask for!.

K PURUSHOTHAMA BHAT

As military ocers, we learn certain inimitable traits during our service, which remain our forte even in the corporate world. Leadership qualities, making decisions under stressful conditions, adaptability to the constantly changing situations come naturally to us. However, as we transit from military life, there is a need to upskill ourselves to match the corporate environment, where success is primarily measured by profitability of the business. Let me confess, it’s not easy to cope-up with the rigours of case studies; but, we are all back in campus after quiet a long time – so there is a lot of energy and drive to re-live the academic life once again, make the best use of our learning days here and graduate as corporate leaders.

AMIT BHADKAMKAR

The 24 weeks fully residential Armed Forces programme at IIM Ahmedabad has helped us develop deeper understanding of the current corporate world through the case study approach. It is a career changing experience imparted to us by the finest faculty and excellent course curriculum. The programme has all the ingredients of transforming military leadership to corporate leadership. We have immensely gained from this programme which has broadened our horizon and given us confidence to launch ourselves firmly in the corporate world.

“The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time, the honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.”

Having lived by the credo above for the better part of our lives, we are a team of 60 chosen ocers (selected by IIMA) with diverse experiences and educational backgrounds. Diversity is our strength and adds flavour to our unity of purpose – that of transforming. Leaders in our own right, we became leaders not with the passage of time but through leading by example under conditions that few have had the privilege to experience.

WHAT WE SEEK TO BECOME:Leaders and followers, mentors yet seekers of knowledge, team members and out shiners alike, we seek to become all that we can be. If there is one thing we know it is that for the determined there are no limits.

HOW WE TRANSFORM:Adaptability and agility is our hallmark. Change of work content and place of work is not new to us. In fact we seek newer challenges to reinvent ourselves. As we step out of the war rooms in to the corporate corridors,we seek to transfer skill sets and values, shed that what is not needed and imbibe the new.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US:Divergent thinking, yet respect for age old values, quick learners yet single minded in our pursuit of excellence, we are determined to excel. Camaraderie and esprit de corps are second nature to us.

WHY IIMAThe number one B School of the nation with its reputed faculty, hallowed environs and abundance of academic opportunities, IIMA is the harbinger of our transformation. Though IIMA is the natural choice for all veterans seeking a change, it opens its doors to a chosen few. This is the crucible where rigour is the norm and holisticdevelopment is the mantra. From academics to the sports arena, this is the veritable Akshaypatra of arenas to excel.

This is the story of our transformation from leading at the front to leading from the front.
