It was a moment of pride for every VSSUTian when car no. 85 crossed the checkered flag at NATRAX, Pithampur. Highlighting the college in the national engineering scene once again, this time it was a group of spirited students who got together to build an ATV(All-Terrain Vehicle) to participate in the 2012 edition of BAJA SAEINDIA. After working up a software model of the ATV, the team had to clear the Virtual Round to get the nod from the organizers to start building the car. VEERss battled it out with over 280 teams from around the country to break into the top 100 who got the green flag. The journey from there was no cake walk either. Faced with severe limitations in terms of resources, short- age of equipment and non-availability of components near- by, VEERss had a herculean task at hand to complete the fabrication and testing of the “IoKE” in time for the event. But thanks to our Alumni, the crew could at least throw their worries about funds out of the window with a support of 3 lakhs towards the participation. The teachers and staff were equally supportive and encouraged the students in every way possible. The main event started on 17th February, 2012 held on the National Automobile Testing Track (NATRAX), Pithampur. The facility sports a dirt and gravel track 3.8 kilometers long, tailor made to BAJA specifications. Clever mud traps, treacherous hill climbs and fast corners make this track a grueling test of man and machine in the 4 hour endurance race that concludes the mega event. Before be- ing cleared for the race, every team had to pass through a set of dynamic and static events. The former consisted of events such as brake test, acceleration test, hill climb, maneuverability etc. while the static event list was mostly made up of presentations and static evaluations. VEERss proved themselves race worthy and got a slot in the start- ing grid with 81 other cars. The car had a brilliant start with a few passes in the first lap itself but disaster struck in the third lap when the car had to make its first pit stop due to broken brake line. Within the next hour, snapped brake-lines and a non-responsive accelerator cable forced the car to make additional pit-stops and reduced the pace of the car. True character and courage was shown by the team in regards to decisions taken during crucial times which led to a re- silient car, and an even more resilient driver completing the last 4 laps of the race without brakes and an accelera- tor without a working spring. With 15 laps to their credit, VEERss were placed 14th in the race and 51st overall. The other two partici- pating teams from the state, NIT-R and KIIT, were placed 74th and 93rd respectively. Putting the competition in perspective and the fact that this was the team’s first at- tempt at BAJA, the effort and performance of the students is commendable. We wish the team all the best for their future and hope that they take the college to even greater heights. Go VEERss!!! It has been a long wait, but we assure you, this edition is worth the wait. Though there were initial setbacks regarding availability of components and build quality, the team scaled a steep learning curve to complete in time the construction of a thoroughbred warrior.

Born on 20th April 1991, Late Paresh Panda, a 3rd yr, Electrical Engi-neering student died an untimely death on 20th April, 2011. A smart, intelligent and jolly person, he was known for his helping nature. He was the go to guy of their branch, always working behind the scenes yet making his presence felt strongly every time he took interest in something.A jocular, happy go lucky person he brought smiles to many faces. He is survived by his mother, father and five sisters. On behalf of one and all ever associated with him in his walks of life, we pray to Almighty to give his family enough strength and courage to withstand the grief and loss and to keep alive his fond full memories.May his soul rest in peace.

Like last year, this academic year opened a lot of opportunities for students in their placement year, and with still four months to go, the total no. of offers stands at 371 from 28 companies as on March, 2012. The year also saw a significant rise in the intake of recruits from the college by premium core companies like TATA Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Ashok Leyland. We sincerely hope that the good spell continues and the year ends with a great note for the Training and Placement Cell.
