Tool 1: TRANSECT WALKNumber of participants: 15 male: 15 female: Nil

Description:The transect walk is a tool to discuss information related to land use of the village. Transectsare done with structured walks through typical village landscape. Such walks can cover partof the village or the entire village, taking an hour or up to somehours. Transects consist of two elements: the walk and adiagram that records the information of the walks. Objectives:Identify typical land use types and their characteristics.

With whom:Mixed group of farmers (female and male)

Description:This tool helps the villagers to remind all important events which happened in thevillage in the past. It also helps villagers of the community to be aware of their effortpassing each period of their recent history.

Draw a line on A0 paper. One end of the line will be ‘now’.Explain to the households that this is the History Line

Ask the households to recall key events (positive andnegative) throughout history (from the earliest to now) andthe year they occurred.

Objectives: Find out general information and important events

Problems Causes

Time constraints?Limited financial resources?

What are the causes of the problem?

Dry season prevails long time, encroachmentof wild animal (along the fringes of ReserveForests). Water scarcity.

Scanty rainfall. Non availability of edible itemsin the forests for wild animals.

Illegal liquor vendors in the village Illiteracy and ignorance.

Solutions

1. Forest areas should be fenced by the forest department/Vegetative fencing is required.

2. Edible plants/ fruits should be planted in the wild.

3. Efforts to curtail deforestration.

Step 2: Find out three most important problems and their causes

Step 3: Find out possible solutions for the three problems

Problems Causes

Which resource do you have the mostproblem with?

What are the causes of the problem?

Water Resources Scanty rainfall.

Wild animal transgressions.Deforestation and lack of edible items in thewild.

Loss of land fertility. Use of fertilizers in the past.

Chapter 2: Land use planning and land allocation

Tool 5: RESOURCE MAP

Number of participants: 28 male: 20 female: 08

Description:The Village Resource Map is a tool that helpsus to learn about a community and its resourcebase. The primary concern is not to develop anaccurate map but to get useful informationabout local perceptions of resources. TheVDAP members should further develop anddetail the content of the map according to whatis important to them.

Objectives:To learn the villagers' perception of whatnatural resources are found in the communityand how they are used.

With whom:Female and male focus groups

Step 1: Assess current situation What resources are abundant? (potential) What resources are scarce? (constraints) Does everyone have equal access to land? Do women have access to land? What is the quantum of fallow land (land left uncultivated) Do the poor have access to land? Where do people go to collect water? Who collects water? Where do people go to collect firewood? Who collects firewood? Where do people go to graze livestock? What kind of development activities do you carry out as a whole community?

Best practices / Success stories:

The Reserve Forests are well protected and hence they are dense. The forests are rich in faunaas well.

Problems Causes

1. Wild animal encroachment into humanhabitation.

Government regulations on wildlife protectionand not enough food for animals in the forests.

2. The survival of saplings is average to poor. Untimely plantation and scarce rainfall.

3. Lack of maintenance after plantation. No follow up activities after plantation, for e.g.timely weeding, vigil etc.

Solutions

Timely plantation and adequate maintenance required. Proper vigil is to be maintained tocurb the cases of encroachment and occurrence of forest fires. The JFMC should be activatedand made aware of their duties and responsibilities. The Department of Forests and Wildlifeshould convene time to time meetings with the locals and assess the prevalent situation.

Water which is available at source willthe reach in same volume to thedistribution tank

Since most of the water supply lines were laid downyears back and timely repair has not been done, leadingto the leakage of water. The diameter of the GI pipebecomes small due to rust formation inside the pipe.

Water which is available at private landis not been allowed to be used byothers who are in need.

The owner of the land thinks that he is the owner of thewater source .
