THE VISITING DIGNITARYHis Excellency Shri Amolak Rattan Kohli, The Governor of Mizoram,
visit to the school on 7th August, 2003
“I divide education into two parameters: one is training and the other is the development of individuals. Training further has three components, one is acquisition of knowledge, the second is upgradation of skills, and the third is developing a positive mental attitude. These are the aspects of training which teachers or others can help you, and you can also learn on your own. Then comes the development aspect of every individual. Development also has four components, the first is increase of IQ - Intelligence Quotient, the second is increase of PQ - Physical Quotient, the third is increase of EQ - Emotional Quotient and the last is increase of MQ - Moral Quotient. When I talk about IQ - Intelligence Quotient, it relates to your wisdom. The school can give you any amount of knowledge, it can give any amount of skills, it can develop your positive mental attitude, but nobody can give you wisdom. Wisdom is your own acquisition over a period of time and what is wisdom? Successful implementation of all these things to achieve results for you, for your society, for your nation and when you come out successful, the world will call you a wise person.”

“No one lights a lamp and covers it with a bowl or puts it under a bed. Instead he puts it on the lampstand, so that people will see the light, as they come in. The experience
of sharing nourishes and enriches life in a community.”

The sisters told us, “Old-age is the second childhood for any individual.” The elders had such a great time that day and we believe that they were reminded of their younger days, of their childhood happiness. Even at this older age, we showed them that they could still have fun, even though they are children no longer. It is a second childhood – with all the old experiences mixed with the new. We also realized that the oneness of humanity cannot be destroyed, though there are the countless number of invisible divides that fragment the World Community into groups, sects and clans.

“Let your heart pave the way, and your dreams build the view.Promise yourselfTo be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind:To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet;To make all your friends feel that there is something in them;To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true;To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best;To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own;To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future;To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile;To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others;To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear; and too happy to permit the presence of trouble;To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds;To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

“As you have put yourself to take on local and global challenges it would be well to remember the Olympic motto which you have endeavoured to follow this morning on the sports field: Citius, Altius, Fortius, meaning, swifter, higher and stronger. You have on the sports field displayed these attributes of excellence. You have been swifter in trying to reach the finishing line, you have raised the bar higher in trying to add another inch or two to your previous best jump and you have displayed strength in the many sports events that calls for strength. As you go about equipping yourself for life and then taking charge of your life and the lives of others in due course, when you step out into the real world it will be well to remember the Olympic motto and apply it to life. Swifter to thought and action, actions speak louder than words; higher, your aims and ideals must be higher than your peers’ if you really want the world to say, “Here is a man”/”Here is a woman”; this leads to greatness;

stronger, in adversity, your resolve and conviction in what you believe, that is the truth that the school teaches you and stands for. You must be stronger; it is only a strong belief in yourself that makes others believe in you. It should be remembered that winners never quit and quitters never win. Adversity causes men to break and others to break records.”

It was wonderful seeing the campus and even using the medical facilities! Thank you for the warmth of your welcome, the superb (and thoughtful) organization, and the kindness Elsamma and you have shown throughout. “A week-end of infinite enchantment. What a beautiful place Ooty is, visiting as I am after more than half century. And the Fernhill Palace at which I stayed was a page of history set in an environmentalist’s delight. In Good Shepherd International I discovered a school that matches the best anywhere in the world. I was particularly touched at the large number of foreign students attending the school, making international citizens of the entire student body. Dr. P. C. Thomas is an ideal Principal, an educationist of conviction who has shown what a dedicated visionary can accomplish. Congratulations!”

“It was indeed a rare privilege and honour to be the Chief Guest at the 39th Founder’s Day celebrations of GSIS, at the behest of Dr. P C Thomas, the most revered Teacher of my schooling days. I witnessed a most spectacular calendar of events put up by the best spirited students and staff.
The vision, passion and commitment for excellence in Education was most significantly evident. That GSIS has received highest accolades is a true testimony to the schools’ potential and acumen. GSIS easily holds great promise to the future of Education in India. Parents who have chosen GSIS as the destination for their children’s education have indeed made the right investment. Many of the Alumni are already great achievers and more would emulate these achievements.
Under the most outstanding leadership of Dr. P.C. Thomas, the school I am certain will further contribute to the students’ aspirations and quality education and thereby precipitating our Nation’s well-being as we look ahead. The faculty and staff are indeed very diligent, professional and committed to the Principal’s objective. May the GSIS proceed “Ever Onward” to greater heights.
My wife Sudha and I thank Dr. P C Thomas and the school for providing us a wonderful opportunity to be at this finest of Institutions and pray that the school grows from strength to strength. God Bless, and Au Revoir.”
