The cosmetics industry is growing day by day. Big cosmetics giants make tall promises qf flawless

skin beauty upliftment, but on a contrar'y, there is an ugly side of this so-called beauty products.

Many health hazardols monsters are hiding in these products. Studies and researches arb showing

that cosmetics usage is toxic, they contain chemicals which can cause cancer. Some brand$:of talcum

powders which are used evety day contain asbestos. :

Unfortunately, consumers, particularly womeo, are caried away by the telling and attractive

advertisements. Very rarely do they read the contents of the cosmetics they use. For instance, the skin

lighining creams which are available in India has hundreds of brands available each pr0mising to

make skin tone lighter, spot free and fairer. Research has proved that these pro-dN6s contain

potentiatly hazardous chemicals like ammonia and hydrogen peroxide, phenylene diamine and

toluene diamines. It causes skin irritation, pimples etc.

According to a report in the UTUSAN CONSUI/E& temporary dyes contain metallic substances,

like lead, which are toxic.and can be absorbed through the scalp into the body. These tempgrary dyes

are derived from Benzedrine, known to produce bladder cancsr.

I,ikewise, have you eyer tried to look beyond the glow of nail polishes to its effects? Nail polish

removgr contains an ingredient called acetone which can cause your nail to becorne brittle and split.

Howevero acetone is less toxic when compared toluene, another ingrediant found in the aail polish.

The basic ingredient used in nail polish is formaldehyde resin which can discolour the niiils. It is a

colourless gas with a strong irritating smeli, used also as an antiseptic for killing geflns.

Formaldehyde is also known by other names like methanol and methanaldehyde.

It may bE interesting to know that, of all fhe cosmelics, lipstick is the most toxio and dangsrous for

three reasons. Firstly, women who apply lipstick swallow the cheraicals directly. Secondly, it gets

absorbed through the tender lip skin. And, finally, lipstick not only harms the user but also her mate.

1.2 Write a summary of the passage based on your notes'

2. Read.the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

1. Climate change and gtobal pollution cannot be adequately tackled without addressing the neglected

issue of the world,s booming population according to two leading scientists Professor chris

Rapley, Director of the British Antarctic Survey and Professor John Guillebaud'

2. They believe that deating with the burgeoning human popuration of the planet was vital if real

progress was to be made on the other enoflnous probrems facing the world. By the middle of the

century, the united Nations estimates that the world population is likely to increase to more than

nine billion, which is equivalent to an extra 200,000 people each day. professor Rapley said the

extra resources needed to sustain this growth in population would put immense strain on the

planet,s life support system even if portution emissions per head courd be dramatically reduced'

3. *Although reducing human emissions to the atmosphere is undoubtedly of critical importance' as

axe any and alt *L**ru to reduce the human environmental 'footprint', the truth is that the

contibution of each individual cannot be reduced to zero. onty the lack of the individual can bring

it down to nothing," Professor Raptey says in an article for the BBC website'

4. professor Rapley says the explosive growth in the human population and the concomitant effects

on the environment have been largery ignored by many of those concerned with climate change' o'It

is a bomb shell of a topic, with profound and "*otin"

issues of ethics, morality, equity and

practicabihty,,, he says. professor Guillebaud, who co- chairs the optimum population Trust, said

it became political$ incorrect about 25 years ago to bring up family planning in discussing the

enviroumental probtems of the deveroping world. The worrd population needed to be reduced by

neady trro-thirds if climate change was to be prevented and evtrryone on the planet was to enjoy a

lifestyle similar to that of Europeans, Professor Guillebaud said'

5. An envkonmental assessment by the conservation charity wwF and the world - watch institute in

washington found that humans are now exploiting about 20 percent more renewable resources

than can be replaced each year. professor Guillebaud said this meant it would require the natural

resources equivalent to four more planet Earths to sustain the projected 2050 population of nine

billion PeoPle.

6. ..The figures demonstrate the folly of concentrating exclusively on lifestyles and technology and

ignoring human numbers in our attempts to combat global warming," he said. o''we need to think

about climate changers - human beings and their numbers as well as climate change'" some

environmentalists have argued that it is not human numbers that are important, but the relative use

of natural resources and production of waste such as carbon dioxide emissions' They have

suggested that the planet can sustain a population of nine billion people or even rnore provided that

everyone adopts a less energyJifestyre based on renewable sources of energy rather than fossil

fuels.
