“When a network of good roads is created, the economy of the country also picks up pace. Roads are veins and arteries of the nation, which help to transform the pace of development and ensure that prosperity reaches the farthest corners of our nation.”
NARENDRA MODI Prime Minister
“In the past four years, we have expanded the length of Indian National Highways to 1,26,350 km. The highway sector has seen a 20% growth between 2014 and 2018. Tourist destinations have come closer. Border, tribal and backward areas are being connected seamlessly. To ensure safety and comfort of travellers in the Char Dham, the following provisions are being made:
Char Dham National Highway Development ProgrammeAfter the natural calamity in Uttarakhand, the roads to the Char Dham were in a bad condition. Despite being the spiritual heart of India, these roads had not been developed until four years ago. The route would remain cut o¢ at many places during the rainy season due to heavy landslides.
Integrated development of the Char Dham has been planned as a solution to these challenges. Projects spanning 900 km of National Highways worth Rs. 12,000 Cr are being developed to bring safe, all weather connectivity to the region. The new highways will be 2 laned with paved shoulders and a minimum width of 10 m.
• On completion of the Char Dham project, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath will be safely connected to Rishikesh
• 37 projects of 633 km length, worth Rs. 8,500 Cr have been sanctioned till date
• The project will be completed in 2019

Kailash Mansarovar RoadRoad development is underway to connect Uttarakhand to Kailash Mansarovar, which falls in the Pithoragarh-Tanakpur section. Road development is di¬cult on these terrains, where temperatures drop to -25o C in winter. Road construction equipment have been brought in from abroad, to cut through hard mountains in the coldest of areas. This has accelerated the construction process
The 75.54 km Ghatiabagarh-Lipulekh road (G.S. Road with BRO) is a part of the Mansarovar Yatra route. On completion the road will directly connect Kailash to Devbhoomi.

Transforming India’s Transport Sector Key initiatives in 2014 -2018Over the past four years, various smart initiatives on Indian National Highways have resulted in transparent processes, last mile connectivity, safer roads, upskilling, new opportunities and employment for the people.
Partnering with NGOs to ensure road safety
Exemption from the requirement of commercial licence for LMV and LCV drivers
E-Rickshaws for last mile connectivity
Green buses and electric vehicles have been introduced. Emission standards have been upgraded for vehicles. BS VI norms along with bio fuel B-100, flex-fuel E-85 or E-100 & ethanol ED-95, methanol M-15 or M-100 and methanol MD-95 have been standardised
15% methanol blending can result in the replacement of around 31.9 million tons of crude oil. With crude oil prices at USD 54 per barrel, the use of clean energy biofuels will reduce fuel costs resulting in significant savings. Compared to neat gasoline, M-15 reduces CO and HC emission by 40%. Biofuels will help in reducing vehicle pollution levels in India
Driving training schools in every district for skill development
E Toll - FASTag to enhance e§ciency, and reduce long queues at Toll plazas
Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2017: To bring transparency, reduce corruption
Road Safety Annual Plan
Greater Compensation for accident victims of upto Rs. 5 lakhs
0.2%-15% decrease in road accidents and fatalities till 2017
