Mazimpaka (2007): Typification of twenty-six varieties of Orthotrichum (Orthotrichaceae, Bryopsida) published by G.Venturi. - Nova Hedwigia 84: 503-512. Abstract: The Italian bryologist Gustavo Venturi was a prestigious taxonomist of the 19th Century, whose principal study object was the genus Orthotrichum Hedw. The main results of such an interest were the description of 20 species, 3 subspecies and 42 varieties validly published within this genus. The original material on which his studies were based is currently kept at the Herbarium of the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (TR). After a revision of the Venturi’s collection, 24 Orthotrichum varieties described upon European materials, together with an American variety and an Asiatic one, are here typified. Keywords: Orthotrichum, nomenclature, herbarium, bryophytes. Introduction Gustavo Venturi (Roveretto 1830 - Trento 1898) was one of the most prominent European Orthotrichologists. Throughout his scientific life, he gathered a collection of near 4600 specimens from all bryophyte groups, collected by himself or obtained through exchanges with the most important contemporaneous bryologists (Brotherus, De Notaris, Britton, Cardot, Limpricht, Schimper, etc.). His herbarium was donated to the city of Trento, and is part of the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (TR) since its foundation in 1922.

Introduction

Gustavo Venturi (Roveretto 1830 - Trento 1898) was one of the most prominentEuropean Orthotrichologists Throughout his scientific life he gathered a collectionof near 4600 specimens from all bryophyte groups collected by himself or obtainedthrough exchanges with the most important contemporaneous bryologists (BrotherusDe Notaris Britton Cardot Limpricht Schimper etc) His herbarium was donatedto the city of Trento and is part of the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (TR)since its foundation in 1922

The specimens of the Venturirsquos collection have been perfectly preserved They arekept in wood cases in which the sheets are included in folders alphabetically orderedby species Each sheet (Figs 1-2) consists in a cardboard on which a packet containingthe specimens (= samples) is fixed The cardboards of each species are correlativelynumbered in pencil generally in the upper or inferior right corner Identificationand collecting data (geographical origin collector donor etc) of each taxon areannotated on the cardboard sometimes incompletly so The sheets frequently containmaterials from several localities and collectors In this case the samples are directlyfixed within the packet or kept in other smaller individual packets Anyway localitiesand specimens are clearly identified each by a number (Fig 1) It is also frequent tofind drawings sometimes in colour that show relevant details of the specimen(Fig 2) Although most of them were made by Venturi himself some others attributableto JCardot and of excellent quality are also found

Orthotrichum is currently represented in the TR-Venturi herbarium by 1037 specimenswhich are kept in 400 sheets under 102 different names Throughout his scientificlife Venturi validly described 20 species 3 subspecies and 42 varieties within thegenus Orthotrichum which were published in 20 papers and collaborations Vitt ampNimis (1987) typified 26 of these names (18 species 1 subspecies and 7 varieties)Unfortunately the original material on which these typifications were based was lostin course of their postal return to TR after having been studied by JLewinsky(Lewinsky in lit) In view of the necessary typification to be made again it will notbe possible to use any material of the Venturirsquos herbarium since no duplicate of the

Figure 1 Sheet number 22 of Orthotrichum pallens Brid in the TR-Venturirsquos herbarium Thecardboard is numbered in the inferior right angle (22) and includes specimens from 3 differentlocalities identified with a roman numeral for each sample Specimens are fixed in the inside of thepacket

material selected for that typification nor any material susceptible to be selected asneotype is kept there

Vitt amp Nimis (1987) did not include in their work the European varieties for thereason given by these authors themselves ldquoneither of us is familiar with intraspecificvariation of Orthotrichum on the European continentrdquo Afterwards only one varietydescribed by Venturi has been typified (Garilleti et al 2002) and no further study onthe herbarium of this orthotrichologist has been carried out The present work intendsto partially fill in this gap through a typification of the European varieties whoseoriginal material is kept at the Venturirsquos herbarium (TR-Venturi) For this purpose allthe Orthotrichum material gathered by Venturi and available in TR has been revisedTaxa validly published by Venturi and not treated in the present paper are summarizedon table 1 where those already typified and those for which no typifiable material hasbeen found in TR are indicated Only two species two subspecies and eight varietiescould not be typified because of the complete lack of suitable specimens at TR

For the typification it has been considered that a specimen constitutes a holotype of aname when a direct reference to that collection is made in the protologue according tothe Article 9 Note 1 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Greuter et al2000) When it has been necessary to designate a lectotype due to the existence of morethan one specimen or to the citation of different materials in the original description thespecimen that best represents the Venturirsquos concept of the taxon was selected

Figure 2 Lectotype of Orthotrichum pallens Bruch ex Brid var crispatulum Venturi in the TR-Venturirsquos herbarium It is an example of the numerous sheets containing illustrations made by Venturihimself The fixed specimens belong to three different species More details on the lectotypificationin text

Besides the European names an American taxon Orthotrichum pumilum Sw exanon var americanum Venturi in Husnot and an Asiatic one Orthotrichum alpestreHornsch ex Bruch amp Schimp var dilatatum Venturi in Broth which had not beenincluded in the Vitt amp Nimisrsquo work (1987) are here also typified

No typification of the many ldquotypicumrdquo varieties published by Venturi has been donesince they are invalid names in accordance with the articles 243 and 262 of theICBN In case of the varieties ldquocommunerdquo that Vitt amp Nimis (1987) consideredmore problematic than the ldquotypicumrdquo ones the same criterion has been followedthrough the application of the article 262 For this we based our criterion on Venturirsquoscomments that allow to understand what this author understood by ldquocommunerdquovarieties and show without any doubt that these varieties include the type of thespecies For instance in case of Orthotrichum pallens Bruch ex Brid var communeVenturi (1887) comments ldquoUn eacutechantillon original de lrsquoO pallens communiqueacutepar Bruch lui-mecircme agrave De Notaris appartient agrave cette varieacuteteacute [commune] dans tous sesdeacutetailsrdquo It is also the case of Orthotrichum rogeri Brid var commune since Venturi(1887) himself bases its description on the original materials of the type varietyldquodes eacutechantillons authentiques de lrsquoO rogeri de Bridel et de Schimperrdquo It is thesame case as Orthotrichum rupestre Schleich ex Schwaumlgr var vulgare Venturi sinceVenturi (1887) includes in this taxon the species type as well as O flaccum De Not
