DEDICATION

The nineteen hundred seventynine yearbook staff would like to dedicate this book, on behalf of all the Windsor High School students, to the person who we feel "Lives Life to the Fullest."

This person, in our eyes, rises above others in her undertakings and conveys her spirit and enthusiasm to students, faculty and community members. She unselfishly gives of her time, not only in school, but also to her family, church, and town. Her involvement is not limited to activities, but extends to direct involvement with people - making this person one whom students and faculty alike see as a friend. Having fulfilled and surpassed her obligations to the school, she is motivated by a geniune concern for students.

Thus, we proudly present and dedicate the 1979 TUNXIS to a person who we feel makes life a worthwhile experience, Mrs. Elizabeth Waters.

If you follow your heart anywhere it may lead you,

and do what you feel that you must

If you love those around you, and love yourself too, if your spirit is eager and free ..

Then you know what it means to live life to its fullest and be the best "you" you can be.

* * SOCCER * * The Varsity Soccer team ended a tremendous season, the best in recent years. One significant note was that Chris Main, Scott Burghoff, Bill Grabowicz, Scott Hopkins, Mark Boscarino, and Charlie Butterfield all made the eve team. Rarely does any team have six players on an allConference squad. Charlie Butterfield was an All-State selection in addition, Windsor soccer's first. The team advanced through the state tournament downing # 1 ranked E. 0 . Smith along with #5 ranked North Haven and Danbury only to bow out to Staples in the semi-finals.

The 1979 W .H.S. Hockey team played much harder than the final record suggests. Seven sophomores played on Varsity this year, which resulted in inexperienced players on the ice. TOMAHAWK The production of a monthly news-magazine does not

sound like a difficult task, but to those who have worked many school periods and late night hours know the reality.

The TOMAHAWK acquired a new adviser a fe'!Y weeks into the first semester in addition to the new members for which the newsmagazine was a new experIence.

While the new learned and the old taught, not all of the deadlines were met - the September issue was sold in October, and the January issue was sold in February - and the "same old difficulties" with photography existed, - eventually all the issues came out.

JUNIOR PROM

May 13, 1978 marked the date of the class of 1979 J unior Prom. The evening was indeed an unforgettable one, showering us with memories of one special high school sweetheart that will last far beyond graduation. Dancing amid the silver stars and moons, the couples swayed to the theme song "We're All Alone", by Boz Scaggs. Special thanks go to our class advisors, officers and Junior Prom Steering Committee who put so much time and effort into the planning and decorating of the dance, but most of all to everyone in attendance who reflected the success of the prom.

SPAGHETTI SUPPER

The student council sponsered the first spaghetti supper of the year on October 27, 1978. The supper was a great success with many of the team members from the various fall sports in attendance showing their spirit. In place of last years eating contest, the prize of the case of soda was given to the sport team with the best attendance that evening at the supper. Although there was a small controversy over whether or not to count the two players who were injured during a game the same afternoon and could not attend, the volleyball team won, unmistakably with I 00% attendance.

HOMECOMING This years Homecoming was

even bigger and better than last year. The festivities began Friday seventh period with a pep rally where the senior class came out tops among the rowdy cheerers as usual. Following the rally were two home games-Field Hockey, and Soccer of which we were victorious. That evening at dusk members of the faculty shed their teaching degrees as they became masters of the fine art of working a grill at the barbecue. Then Saturday morning, the 7th of October, the day began with an Alumni Soccer game with the 78-79 WHS Soccer team winning and an Alumni Volleyball game with the alumnus coming out on top. The parade was extra big, including participants such as town fire companies and political campaigners. And last, but most important of all was the Football game. Although Windsor lost to Milford 14-26, our spirits weren't dampened. At least not TOO MUCH.

WINTER HOLIDAYS CONCERT

On December 21, 1978, the Windsor High School Performing Arts Department presented a Winter Holidays Concert under the direction of Wayne B. Johnson, Robert Bordon, and apprentice teacher, Victoria Dobrinski. The program included selections from the Concert Band, Windsor High Singers, Chamber Singers, and Concert Chorale. It proved to be a delightful evening of music that left the audience with an uplifted spirit of the holiday season.

NIGHT OF JAZZ

The Jazz Rock Ensemble presented A Night of Jazz on January 11, 1979. Under the direction of Wayne B. Johnson, the ensemble, comprised of many senior class members, surpassed the talents of previous years. In addition to the musical performance, Ernest Cirillo (theater director) organized visual entertainment. from a peanut vendor passing out freshly roasted peanuts to members of the audience during a musical piece called (what else?) "Peanut Vendor". A small number of dancers entertained an enthusiatic audience, and pulled them, sometimes even willingly out of their chairs to dance on stage. One woman had a "grand ole time" dancing on the platform with her scarf.

And what were all those people crying about? The death of the performing arts courses, Theater II and Stagecraft II. The grievers were led down an isle with a small band section playing a mournful tune. The night was indeed one full of unexpected suprises that ended with an enthusiastic applause.

SADIE HAWKINS

This year the annual Sadie's was filled with numerous casualties as usual. In addition to the pails and puddles of spilled cider, the worst was the traditional senior skit recalling the classic farm tale of the day when the gals could ask the guys to marry them-But they had to catch them first! Donned in their blue jeans, straw hats, plaid shirts and painted on freckles, all the couples in attendance sat themselves in a semi-circle around the set awaiting the start of the skit. It wasn't before long that whispers carried throughout the anxious audience curious to know whether act I had begun yet. It had, but half of the oblivious observers were busier chatting among their friends than listening to the skit. Dispite futile attempts, the cast was unable to quiet the audience. They did, however, catch some attention by entrusting Doreen Kelly (Granny Yokum) with a rifle. And what did Patty Burton (Daisy Mae) and Jeff Bassell (L'il Abner) really do behind the closed doors of the outhouse?

MUSIC MARATHON

94

If you were out on the lookout for the music students of Windsor High on December 8th, 9th, or lOth, you probably found them in the Recreation Center gym with such varied conditions as sagging eyelids to sore vocal chords. These dedicated students were taking part in a 36 hour music marathon. Through the collection of pledges, the music department hoped to gain enough funds to help pay towards a trip to Florida where they could perform on stage inside of Disneyworld, or Washington D.C. where the club could participate in a music competition. The Music Parent Organization helped prepare meals for the participants in the marathon. Though extremely tired at the finish , most music members thought it was a worthwhile experience, and enjoyed the closeknit family feeling of working toward the same final goal.

ILITARY EEK

The week began on November 6th with a B period assembly at which representatives from the Navy, Marines, Air Force, Army, and Connecticut Army National Guard explained each of their respective programs. After the assembly several of the military units met with interested students individually to discuss the history, tradition, training, and special duties of military life. Special events highlighted included the Connecticut National Guard Helicopter, and Career Trailer where students were enlightened of the various machine trades offered, and also the Air Force flight assimilator. The Marines presented a special program of physical fitness training to the P.E. classes. There was also special consideration given to women explaining the kinds of careers available to them in the Army. In addition, the Navy conducted a lecture/conference on the controversial subject of Nuclear Power. The program was coordinated by the Guidance Office with the purpose of giving students the option of a military career versus a traditional college education. Those whose efforts combined in planning the weeks activities included Mr. Parkman, Mr. Carlson, and Mr. Shea along with the cooperation of numerous individuals of the faculty. The Windsor High Band also did an exceptional job in arousing patriotic spirit at the start of the assembly program. This years Military Week proved to be a successful educational experience for all those who took advantage of the program offerings, and plans are already in affect for a larger and more diverse presentation next year.

SEMIFORMAL Amid suspended snowflakes and dangling stars above the elegantly reformed lunch tables, seventy couples danced to the music of CHARMER on Februray 3, 1979 for the annual Winter Weekend Semi-Formal. The theme song was "Color My World" by Chicago and throughout the evening the couples danced to it often. The cafeteria was disguised by winter decorations, which, in addition to the snowflakes and stars, included streamers that were draped from the ceiling and a bridge with snow and winter shrubs surrounding it and primarily adding to the atmosphere of a winter wonderland. The dance topped off an evening that for most couples began with dining out and an exchange of flowers that would later be pressed into scrapbook as a single memoir of the special night.

Each individual editor this year worked their hardest to make this book an unforgettable one. Without an editor things got tough, but we made it.

A special thanks to Lisa Vanderbilt and Lori Weisberg who helped when we were in a pinch. Also, Bill Clark who did art work for the sports section, and Dave S. who did a great job on such short notice, on the cover.

Hey Mr. Semplice how do you like this picture for the cover - is it too late? I'm sure you and Mr.Toomey will NEVER forget this book and the staff! Remember Mr. Semplice, an appointment with Mr. Toomey for 2 p.m. means 3:30 - if you're lucky.

Remember the GREAT coverage the non-staff photographers gave us? - Tim how about girls' soccer photos -do ya think you' have enough? Debbie how about Winter Weekend and especially the Semi? Donna, how do you like square photos? Maria & Blair how are things going? RoseAnne I'll bet you JUST CAN'T WAIT for next year!

From Tim - thanks to Jeff & Scott - Always there in the clutch when I couldn't be there, and to Scott & Maria for th"eir typing.

From Maria - thanks to Mom and Dad and especially Reynold.

Class History Looking back to our first day at Windsor High, it's surprising to see how far the

class of 1979 has come along. We came in as a group of sophomores - some excited, but all lost in the expanses of our new school. We were not however, the only ones who were lost. Upon our entrance in September of '76, the school building had been expanded and completely renovated. The juniors, seniors, and teachers were lost too. We soon learned our way around and found the new labs, gym, library, music wing, and among other things a beautiful indoor pool (which we could not use.)

With the help of our class advisors, Mr. Albert Marini and Mrs. Debbie Smith, we elected our first class officers: Kim Rubenbauer, President; Kathy Lattal, Vice President; Lauren Provost, Secretary; and Diane Farley, Treasurer. During this year, "The Rock" came into existence, which we as sophomores along with other groups vied for the prestige of decorating with layers of paint.

September of '77 rolled around, and we were now Juniors and upperclassmen. We again elected class officers. This time they were Lauren Provost, President; Kathy Lattal, Vice President; Cindy Giller, Secretary; and Diane Farley, Treasurer. By this time, the pool was finally made available to us. We all had the chance to try it out with the swimming tests which we moaned and groaned about.

Preparations began for our Junior Prom. After we had chosen "We're All Alone" as the theme, the class officers and the prom committee got to work. They really did a great job making our Junior Prom something very special.

The summer of '78 passed very quickly and before we knew it we were back in school again - this time as Seniors. The year we had been waiting for finally arrived. With our class officers, Lauren Provost, President; Kathy Lattal, Vice President; Doreen Kelly, Secretary; Beth McNamara, Treasurer, and Diane Farley and Nancy McVey, Co-treasurers, we were set for our best year at WHS.

Like the two previous years, we all had new schedules. This time, however, there was an added kink. We no longer had Wednesday 6th for privileges. Instead, there were seven classes per day. Each class met five times a week and lab courses met six times. This not only meant that we could possibly get homework five nights a week in any given subject, but it also created some problems. Some students had difficulty in adapting, as they went home after their sixth class. Others had schedule conflicts and flocked to the guidance office.

Mr. Shea welcomed us back in our Senior orientation assembly, warning us to

beware of the malady known as "senioritis" (which we all know is inevitable.) Soon WHS had its second annual homecoming. We entered our Senior float in the parade which was part of a weekend of festivities including a barbecue, a disco, football, soccer, and field hockey games. The soccer and field hockey teams worked very hard, and it all paid out in the end. The soccer team finished as State Semi-finalists and the Field Hockey team as Class L State Champs!

The Senior class sponsored the Sadie Hawkins and the Sock Hop. Then came our Senior Prom at Chez Josef. The last stretch of the road had come into sight.

Now, with diploma in hand, we move ahead in a mixture of joy and tears to a bright new future. As we each go our own way, remember that you only get out of life what you put into it. So, set your goals high and live life to the fullest!

NANCY MARY ANDREW

MAY 23, 1961 - DECEMBER 7, 1978

We at Windsor High have had the privilege of knowing and loving a borrowed angel, Nancy Mary Andrew. In her seventeen short years with us, Nancy taught her family and friends how to live. For Nancy, Cystic Fibrosis was a way of life. Rather than let her affliction get the best of her, Nancy made the best of it. She faced life with a cheerful positive attitude, knowing that things could be worse. Having surpassed her doctors expectations, Nancy thanked God for each day that she lived, and in doing so, taught us how to live.
