Canada is a nation known for its abundance of natural resources. However, our resources are also building a reputation for creating both domestic and international contro-versy. Whether it’s tari�s regarding steel exports, environmental concerns targeting mining or protests and politics blocking oil production, the harvesting of resources may not be the most di�cult step in getting raw materials to market. �at’s why it is encouraging to see the World Trade Or-ganization (WTO) rule in favour of Canadian lumber exports. In late August, the WTO ruled the United States’ De-partment of Commerce was wrong to imposed tari�s on Canadian softwood lumber in 2017. According to the US, Can-ada’s regulated forestry industry translates to an unfair subsidy for lumber producers. Although the duties have translated to billions of dollars paid by Canadian producers, the WTO panel agreed with Canada that

every key �nding of subsid-ization was without merit.

“This report is a scathing indictment of the U.S. De-partment of Commerce’s subsidy findings and the biased process it followed in reaching them,” said Susan Yurkovich, president and CEO of the BC Lumber Trade Council.

“For three decades, we have been saying that the U.S. trade remedy process is �awed. Unfortunately, this is just the latest chapter in the ongoing attack on the Canadian lumber industry. Each of the prior two lumber disputes ended with neu-tral, international tribunals issuing rulings that forced Commerce to rescind their flawed and unsupported subsidy �ndings for similar reasons. Today’s decision is an important step towards, what we expect, will be the same result. If the errors identi�ed by the WTO Panel are properly addressed and corrected, the Department of Commerce would have no choice but to complete-ly reject the U.S. industry’s subsidy claims and put an end to these baseless claims against Canadian producers.”

While the WTO decision likely won’t put an end to decades of disputes, it will hopefully serve as a reminder of the need for cross border cooperation between Canada and the United States.Few economies are as cir-cular as Canada’s natural resources, particularly when it comes to heavy equip-ment. The excavator used to clear logging roads in BC may be built in America, but its battery may contain nick-el from Sudbury, or its steel tracks may have once been iron ore mined in the Lab-rador Trough region. And regardless of how dur-able the machine may be, the less hurdles the better. .

Canada’s �rst Bobcat dealership, located in Windsor, Ontario, has a new owner.

Starting Sept. 1, Oaken Holdings, the company that operates Bobcat of Toronto and Bobcat of Barrie, is taking ownership of Bobcat of Windsor from Carrier Centers Equipment.

�e Windsor location �rst opened in 1972 as a Jacobs Farm Equipment dealership, officially bringing Bobcat equipment to Canada. �e dealership was purchased by Carrier Centers about seven years ago.

“Oaken is extremely excited to purchase and enter into the Windsor market, which is home to the �rst Bobcat dealership in Can-ada,” said company President Kai Sørensen. “We’re looking forward to partnering with a solid team and loyal customers throughout Windsor-Essex as we continue growing the business and support customers in the region.”

Oaken became a Bobcat dealer in 2013, after purchasing two Bobcat operations from Hertz Matthews in the Toronto and Barrie, Ontario markets.

“At the time, we had 18 employees and the mission to rejuvenate the Bobcat brand throughout Central Ontario,” Sørensen said.

Oaken decided to sell Bobcat equipment based on the brand’s reputation and more than 70 years in compact equipment manu-facturing.

“Bobcat equipment o�ers the best power, performance and comfort in compact construction equipment,” Sørensen said, adding “Bobcat’s constant innovation and state-of-the-art technology o�ers customers protection and e�ciency, through features like Machine IQ and Bobcat MaxControl.”

Since its first acquisitions in 2013, the company has now expanded to nearly 70 employees across three locations and sup-ports its customers via sales, parts, service and rental departments. As well, Oaken Holdings now has eight service trucks on the

road and more than 20 certi�ed technicians between its dealerships.

“With a full focus on being trusted partners for our customers, Oaken is dedicated to providing outstanding customer service to ensure long, reliable equipment perform-ance,” Sørensen said. “Even as the company grows, we take great pride in maintaining family-owned and operated values and attitudes. In striving to achieve our commit-ment to provide world class service to our customers, we maintain the largest inventory of Bobcat equipment, attachments and parts throughout Canada.”

With the acquisition of the Windsor branch, Oaken now provides Bobcat equip-ment to the Greater Toronto Area, Simcoe County and Windsor Essex County.

Oaken is also now moving into new mar-kets, following Bobcat’s recent introduction of 15 new tractor models, ranging from 21 to 58 horsepower with four transmission types.

“Our customer base ranges from large scale construction and demolition com-panies to small business landscapers and grounds maintenance crews,” Sørensen said. “With the introduction of the new Bobcat compact tractor line last year, we’ve begun successfully moving into the farm and large acreage market.”

The Bobcat of Windsor branch will be working out of a temporary location as of Sept. 1, at 4880 Walker Road as Oaken scouts for a permanent location.

Komatsu has introduced the new PC130-11 excavator for contractors looking for an entry-level machine to tackle tasks such as utility work or small construction jobs.

�e mid-sized PC130-11 features an oper-ating weight of 13,000 kg, which allows the excavator to be more easily transported on a tag trailer without permits. �e machine’s easy transportability also makes it ideal for rental.

The new excavator fits in between Ko-matsu’s PC88 mini excavator and PC138

mid-sized excavator in the company’s lineup."�e versatility of our PC130-11 makes it a

great excavator for customers looking for an entry-level excavator with Komatsu durability and reliability," said Andrew Earing, product marketing manager for Komatsu. “It can be a real workhorse as your business expands and grows."

Powered by a 97.2 hp Tier 4 Final Komatsu engine, the conventional tail swing PC130-11 excavator provides customers with fast

loading cycles and high productivity. With steel castings in the boom foot,

boom nose and arm tip to help spread working loads away from high stress areas, the PC130-11 o�ers long-term durability.

As well, the PC130-11 has 12 per cent lower fuel consumption than the previous model, and its auto-idle shut down func-tion can be set to automatically stop the engine after a preset amount of idle time. �e fuel-saving viscous fan clutch also re-duces engine load when maximum cooling is not needed. The excavator’s engine is also equipped with a double element air cleaner with auto dust excavator, as well

as an overheat prevention system. Operators can choose from six working

modes to optimize productivity and fuel efficiency. As well, the PC130-11’s high performing hydraulic �ow and stick dig-ging force optimize machine productivity. Furthermore, its large one-piece hood and ground level daily checks simplify serviceability.

�e ROPS cab of the PC130-11 is equipped with automatic air conditioning, a large high-resolution LCD monitor, auxiliary input jack, rear view monitor system and a suspension seat. �e KomVision surround camera system is optional.

Consignors can now list equipment and machinery for sale without the need to wait for a scheduled Yoder & Frey auction.

Ca na d i a n e q u i p m e nt manufacturers are feeling the e�ects of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

AEM conducted the survey from June 22 to August 5. �e 24 respondents weighed in on the pandemic’s e�ects on the economy, the industry, their companies, the supply chain and manufacturing, financial expectations, as well as the challenges they continue to face.

The survey found that a b o u t 4 7 p e r c e n t o f Canadian equipment manu-facturers surveyed said it will

take a year or more for their organizations to recover to pre-COVID business levels.

“�e COVID-19 pandemic has clearly impacted equip-ment manufacturers and the communities we proudly serve across Canada,” said Alexander Russ, director of government a�airs for AEM. “From new orders drying up to supply chain disruptions, this unprecedented crisis has caused many companies to reduce their immediate �nancial outlook. AEM con-tinues to help our industry navigate these challenging times to come back stronger and fuel Canada’s economic recovery.”

In Canada, equipment manufacturers, suppliers and distributors have largely remained open and continue to supply the equipment ne-cessary to keep the country moving forward and help lead the recovery and renew-al of the economy.

�e survey also found that more than 75 per cent of equipment manufacturers in Canada surveyed identi�ed a decrease in new orders as the primary impact of COVID-19 on their business and manu-facturing operations. As well, four out of 10 respondents identi�ed supply chain issues as a major impact.

About half of Canadian

equipment manufacturers say they have used or in-tend to use Canada’s federal COVID-19 assistance pro-grams to help their business, with the other 50 per cent saying they haven’t or will not.

Accessing the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) is simple, according to 55 per cent of manufactur-ers accessing the funding, while 22 per cent said it was “relatively easy.” Another 22 per cent of manufacturers surveyed said it was “mod-erately di�cult.”

�e top additional policies equipment manufacturers believe the Government of

Canada should undertake to help their businesses through the COVID-19 crisis include:

· Recognizing the critical importance of Canadian manufacturing capacity.

· Implement measures to increase the competi-tiveness of the sector, and reward innovative Canadian manufacturers.

· Inve st m o re f e d e ra l money in infrastructure projects, including in-creasing the federal portion of funding for provincial and municipal projects.

· Create a program to re-place older equipment with new, lower emission

equipment through tax credits or government grants and loans.

AEM continues to lead the industry’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and works closely with Can-adian officials to keep the equipment manufacturing industry in Canada strong and ensure the nation’s eco-nomic resilience.

AEM is also calling for bold action by the Canadian gov-ernment to incentivize the further development of the equipment manufacturing industry in Canada, and to provide additional economic assistance to businesses of all sizes.

Volvo CE has added a new high-speed drive-line option for its L45H and L50H compact wheel loader, which allows the machines to reach speeds of up to 50 km per hour.

�e high-speed drive-line option more than doubles the original top speeds of 20 km per hour. �is allows the machines to travel more quickly between jobsites and can also reduce cycle times.

“These loaders are often used in applica-tions that require travel between jobsites, where the standard-speed transmission may be

time consuming and the alternative of trans-porting them by truck can be expensive,” said John Comrie, product manager for wheel load-ers at Volvo CE. “The higher travel speed is not only e�cient; it also improves productivity in applications like load and carry and clearing snow.”

wheel loaders are now capable of operating in three driveline speeds: the standard 20 km per hour, an option of 30 km per hour or the

top-speed option of 50 km per hour. �is allows customers to choose a maximum speed that best suits their needs and applications.

To dial into the cor-rect transmission setting there is a drive mode se-lector. The operator is also able to adjust drive-line behaviour based on attachment and applica-tion. The operator has a choice of �ve modes: work, transport, com-fort and two types of eco modes.

Re gardless of the application — materi-al handling with forks, truck loading, road

sweeping or general load and carry tasks — there is a work mode suited to the activity, boosting productivity and oper-ation while reducing costs.

In addition, a tractive power selector provides operators with a choice of five settings to suit ground conditions. �is means less wheel spin and reduced tire wear and fuel consumption.

An optional electronic speed limiter for attach-ments such as sweepers and snow blowers con-trols maximum speed without losing tractive force.

�e truck was completed on Aug. 12 at the Kenworth assembly plant in Renton, Washington, which ends production of the severe-ser-vice truck model after 14 years.

�e K500 has been one of Kenworth’s premier models, gaining notoriety primarily within oil and gas explora-tion customers worldwide.

“ The Kenwor th K500 cabover has been a stellar truck model, and provided excellent performance and reliability for our custom-ers worldwide,” said Laura Bloch, Kenworth assistant general manager for sales and marketing.

The K500 cabover used a combination of the Ken-worth C500 drivetrain with a modern COE cab. The con�guration addressed the need for an on and o�-high-way vehicle with improved jobsite visibility. �e K500

also o�ered more cab space than conventional models. The result was a shorter, more manoeuvrable truck or tractor with the mobile

o�-highway characteristics that made the Kenworth K500 highly desirable around the world.

�e K500 featured a variety of con�gurations, including 6x4, 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10.

The last Kenworth K500 cabover was sold to Sintagma Holding for use by the Min-ing Society of Chitotolo (Sociedade Mineira do Chi-totolo) in Luanda, Angola. �e K500 will be used in a gold mining operation.

T h e l a s t K e n w o r t h K500 produced features a Cummins 525 hp engine with 1,650 foot-pounds of torque, Allison 4700RDS sev-en-speed transmission and AxleTech tandem rear axles rated at 45,359 kg with a 9.59 rear axle ratio.

The front axle is a new Meritor front drive axle rated at 14,514 kg with a 9.66 axle ratio. �e K500 also includes 30K front springs and Chalmers 130K dual rear suspension.

Throughout the last 14 years, Kenworth delivered K500 units to numerous customers and countries throughout the world.

�e �rst K500 order was in 2006 and went to Karamay in China as part of a total order of eight K500s.

Doosan Bobcat and Green Machine Equipment have formed a strategic part-nership to produce electric/hydraulic compact excavators.

Green Machine will custom retrofit Bobcat excavators with their proprietary battery technology to replace the standard diesel power source and will sell the ma-chines in select markets this year.

The electric/hydraulic machines will provide the power and performance equivalent to diesel-powered models, along with considerably lower daily oper-ating costs, zero emissions, reduced noise and minimal maintenance. The electric/hydraulic compact excavators will be beneficial to operators working in urban environments, such as working close to other buildings or in public spaces.

“This strategic partnership marks an-other key milestone in our drive to bring the latest technologies to our customers and accelerate electrification in our indus-try,” said Joel Honeyman, vice president

of global innovation at Doosan Bobcat. “Doosan Bobcat is excited to partner with Green Machine as part of our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

Launched in 2010, the Buffalo, New York-based Green Machine is a wholly owned subsidiary of alternative energy company Viridi Parente. Green Machine's Whisper-Drive technology is incorporated into mini excavators, portable light towers and an array of other similar machine platforms.

�e Trans Mountain Pipeline was established in 1953 to create a reli-able energy supply for Canada and the United States.

�e initial capacity was 150,000 barrels per day, with four pump stations along the line and a marine loading dock. Since 1953, the pipe-line’s capacity has been increased a number of times by twinning parts of the line as well as adding associated facilities. In 2019, Can-ada approved the Trans Mountain Expansion Project.

�e Trans Mountain Expansion is essentially a twinning of the ex-isting 1,150 km pipeline between Strathcona County, Alberta, and Burnaby, British Columbia.

It will create a pipeline system with nominal capacity going from about 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day.

The Expansion Project will construct about 980 km of new pipeline, 193 km of reactivated pipeline, 12 new pump stations, with 19 new tanks added to exist-ing storage terminals in Burnaby, Sumas and Edmonton. Along with new storage terminals, there will be three new berths built at Westridge Marine Terminal.

�e existing pipeline will carry re�ned products, synthetic crude oils and light crude oils with the capability for heavy crude oils. �e new pipeline will carry heavier oils with the capability for transporting light crude oils.

Construction is currently hap-pening across Alberta and British Columbia for the Expansion Pro-ject. Work at Burnaby Terminal and Westridge Marine Terminal began in August 2019.

Step-by-stepTemporary roadways are cur-

rently under construction at the Burnaby Terminal, where the site is being prepared for 14 new storage tanks. One existing tank and the sur-rounding utilities will be removed to accommodate the new layout.

To house the tanks with enough

capacity to contain 110 per cent of the tanks’ working volume, crews will �rst build a berm and containment area. Next, the foun-dations will be constructed by using poured-in-place concrete and com-pacted �ll to create a concrete ring. Both the containment area and foundations will be covered by a specially designed synthetic liner that is anchored to the berm.

Layers of cathodic protection will be installed under the base of the tank to prevent corrosion. Leak detection piping and instrumenta-tion will also be installed. �e tank �oor will be installed in sections and welded together. Tank walls will then be lowered into place by a crane and welded. After non-de-structive testing is performed on the welds, the whole tank will be hydrotested to con�rm its integrity.

Each tank will be topped by an internal floating roof to reduce odour and an external �xed roof. �e �oating roof will be built on the bottom of the tank and then lifted to enable installation of the legs, which are designed to travel up and down with the roof to keep it from contacting the �oor when the tank is empty.

Around the perimeter, �re sup-pression and detection systems will be connected by piping systems to an on-site water reservoir and a foam concentrate tank. �e expan-sion will also include an enhanced stormwater treatment system.

Other early work at the site in-cludes tree clearing, top soil and ground soil stripping, reconfig-uration of roadways for access, setting up systems for monitor-ing soil and water quality during construction and installation of temporary sound walls.

Changes to the terminal will also include relocation of existing de-livery pipelines at the terminal to accommodate the expansion and connection to the existing elec-trical grid.

Burnaby Mountain Tunnel�ose pipelines will pass through

Burnaby Mountain from the tank

farm to the Westridge Marine Ter-minal. To achieve that, preparations for construction of the Burnaby Mountain Tunnel are underway. �e 2.6 km tunnel will accommo-date three 76 cm delivery lines that connect the two terminals.

After 101 secant piles on the portal wall are complete, boring operations will begin at Westridge, using a 122 metre tunnel boring machine that will produce a 4.43 metre diameter bore.

Commissioned from Herren-knecht to bore through Burnaby Mountain, the machine is capable of remaining stable in 13.5 bar of water pressure the equivalent of being more than 137 metres underwater.

A launch frame will support the TBM outside of the tunnel at Westridge. �rust cylinders with 25,300 kN of thrust will enable the TBM to propel itself forward. As it pushes forward, the cutter head will simultaneously rotate and break up the earth.

Excavated material will exit through the screw conveyors and be transferred to the belt conveyor and onto muck cars for removal from the tunnel. A total of 38,700 neat cubic metres of material is expected to be excavated.

As the tunnel is excavated, con-crete segments will be installed behind the TBM, which will place six pre-cast concrete segments, each of which is 1.5 metres wide, to form one complete ring. It will then propel forward again, beginning another cycle. More than 10,000 concrete segments will be installed, requiring 1,740 cycles to complete the tunnel.

Westridge Marine TunnelAt the same time, work is under-

way at the Westridge Marine Terminal. Work includes marine, onshore and foreshore construction. Contractor Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP) is installing soil anchors to support widening of the main access road inside the terminal, while also completing soil improvement along the foreshore, which is being constructed of sheet pile cells that are �lled with aggre-

gate material and soil to establish a foundation.

�e marine terminal expansion includes a new dock with three tanker berths to accommodate simultaneous loading of three Afra-max-size tankers, a utility dock to moor tugboats, boom boats and emergency response vessels, addi-tional delivery pipelines and an extension of land along the shoreline for new equipment.

At more than 90 metres long and 30 metres wide, the D.B. General is the largest revolving derrick barge on the West Coast of North America, with a maximum capacity of 700

tons. It will be used to assist with installation of 4.2 metre water piles to support new berth structures and trestles.

�e longest pile is 80 metres in length, making it the longest single pile in Kiewit’s Canadian history. �e heaviest pile is 149 tonnes. �e General will also be used to install 24 dolphin jackets. �ese massive structures are installed on top of the dolphin piles.

Work continues on the federally owned Trans Mountain Expansion Project in Alberta and BC. Final completion is anticipated by the end of 2022.

John Deere’s new 200G excavator is designed to decrease fuel burn without sacri�cing power or produc-tivity.

As well, the 200G en-ables operators to quickly complete tough jobs, while lowering overall operation costs.

Combined w ith John Deere’s broad bucket port-folio, coupler options and attachments, the 200G ma-chine is ideal for numerous applications, including site development, roadbuilding, earthmoving and irrigation work.

The 200G machine fea-

tures a 145 hp Tier 4 Final John Deere PowerTech PSS 4.5-litre engine.

�e most notable features of the 200G model is its low fuel burn, requiring 11 per cent less fuel than the 210G.

“Many of our customers are balancing tight budgets with the need for maximum power and productivity on the job,” said Jonny Spend-love, excavator product marketing manager for John Deere Construction and For-estry.

“With the new 200G Ex-cavator, we are giving our customers the best of both worlds. �is machine is built with fuel saving at the fore-front of its design, while also incorporating several pro-ductivity-boosting features to help operators e�ciently complete jobs.”

Adjustable power modes, including eco and power settings, may be set by the operator based on the job, engaging the machine to automatically change engine rpm and hydraulic pump calibration.

Wi t h f u e l s av i n g s i n mind, the eco mode setting allows the excavator to auto-matically adjust to arrive at the best balance of fuel con-sumption and productivity.

�e 200G also delivers a faster swing speed due to efficiencies with the hy-draulic system. As a result, productivity is increased in applications that require swing movements, such as truck loading and trenching operations. Additionally, this machine is compatible with

a broad portfolio of bucket options, enabling it to meet the demands of several dif-ferent applications. With options ranging from 0.42 cubic metres to 1.02 cubic metres, the bucket design al-lows operators to maximize productivity, regardless of the type of job. Additional-ly, a hydraulic coupler on the 200G allows operators to quickly change between attachments.

�e design of the 200G ma-chine focuses on increased uptime. �e John Deere-ex-c l u s i v e d o u b l e -s e a l e d swing bearing system has enhanced internal grease retention, improving the ma-chine’s overall reliability. �is helps to reduce the risk of contamination by materi-als like dust and water.

�e excavator is also built with reinforced arm-to-bucket joints to maximize front-joint durability and re-duce maintenance intervals for axial clearance adjust-ment.

�e tungsten carbide-coat-ed ear f langes provide high-wear resistance and long service life, while steel bushings with grease groove channels increase resistance to abrasion and reduce pin wear.

Finally, similar to the rest of the G-Series excav-ator line, the 200G features ground-level service access. �is design ensures most �l-ters can be accessed from the ground, allowing periodic maintenance to be complet-ed with ease and reducing unwanted downtime.

One of JCB’s longest-stand-ing customers has received a unique gift from the manufacturer — a vin-tage JCB 1 backhoe loader

restored to its former glory.The restoration project

was tackled by JCB to help mark the OEM’s approach-ing 75th anniversary.

T h e U n i t e d K i n g -dom-based Eric Carnaby & Son has been a JCB custom-er since 1959. Since then, the contractor has purchased

more than 150 JCB ma-chines. Now JCB has said ‘thank you’ to the firm for its loyalty by restoring the Carnaby family’s cherished 1964 JCB 1 backhoe.

�e project was kept a se-cret until George Bamford, grandson of JCB founder Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE, announced the restoration during a visit to the com-pany’s base in Immingham to collect the machine.

“My family and I are over the moon with the restora-tion. Our JCB 1 is precious to us and we’ve been meaning to restore it for some time, but you know how it is — a

business to run, and all that,” said Roland Carnaby Junior, director of Eric Carnaby & Son.

Now six months later, the backhoe has been hand-ed back to the company after a team at JCB’s world headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire spent hun-dreds of hours lovingly restoring it.

“It has been amazing to see an old machine brought back to life by the JCB team. It looks just as it would have done on the day it came o� the production line in 1964,” George Bamford said.

The company’s first JCB

purchase was a JCB 4 back-hoe in 1959 and it was the JCB backhoe loader that formed the backbone of the Eric Carnaby & Son �eet for many years to come — with up to 12 in operation during the 1970s and 1980s. The company’s most recent pur-chase was the latest X Series excavator.

�e two family businesses have been strongly inter-twined throughout the 61-year period, with 95 per cent of the Eric Carnaby & Son fleet now made up of JCB equipment.

With construction recruit-ment in high gear across Canada, the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada (PCA) has launched the Opportunity Knocks campaign.

The new campaign is designed to encourage Can-adians who are exploring or switching careers to consid-er a “pandemic proof” career in the construction trades.

“Construction really is the sector of opportunity, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and well beyond,” said Paul de Jong, president of the Progressive Contract-ors Association of Canada. “Construction has proven to be an essential service that opens up all kinds of career paths. And right now, with the wave of Baby Boom retirements in construction, opportunity is knocking louder than ever before.”

�e construction industry will need to recruit more than 300,000 construction workers this decade to o�-

set the retirement of about one quarter of Canada’s con-struction workforce over the same period.

With COVID-19 resulting in major job losses across huge sectors of Canada’s economy, the “Oppor-tunity Knocks” campaign encourages job seekers to consider a new career in an industry that o�ers resilient, rewarding careers that can start right away.

“�e construction trades o�er something that many jobs nowadays do not: sta-bility and the potential to grow, advance and succeed,” said Keri Salvisburg, vice president of Member Ser-vices for the PCA. “�is is a fantastic career choice that comes with the certainty that construction tradespeople will always be in high de-mand.”

Taylor Irvine, future owner of Aerial Plus, first started at the company as a young boy painting machines in the shop. His father had bought the rental business serving the GTA back in the 90s. From there, Taylor got into the mechanical side of the business and when he finished school, his father retired, and he proudly took over. For the last seven years, Taylor has furthered the growth of the business in numerous ways. It first started off selling and renting only aerial lifts, but now has forklifts, telehandlers and most recently, earthmoving equipment. If for any reason I need more machines, or any additional attachments, I could also sub-rent them from Bobcat of Hamilton as well. For

example, I had a customer call at 2:30-3ish one day and wanted forks for the Bobcat T595 compact track loader right away. The rental department at Bobcat of Hamilton had them for me within the hour. I also have had customers extend their rental already on these machines because they like them so much, especially the A/C and they are constantly out on rent.”

Edge enables supervisors

to access information from a computer or tablet from anywhere with an internet connection, whether in the pit or in a distant o�ce. Receiving information in near-real-time allows supervisors to make changes during the shift to achieve performance goals.

MineStar Edge results“In early deployments of

Edge Equipment Tracking and Production Recording, we saw the mines achieve signi�cant gains,” said Ryan Howell, commercial manager for Cat MineStar Solutions.

For example, a phosphate mine was able to increase the average tons per load by 15 per cent and was able to reduce the number of underloads by 29 per cent. �e mine also reduced shift change time by 17 per cent. Furthermore, a limestone quarry increased production by 20 per cent by using the information to re-duce underloads, and tracking data helped them improve blend compliance.

“We estimate that sites cur-rently using paper reporting systems will be able to in-crease production by 20 per cent to 30 per cent,” Howell said. “For mines using pro-duction recording technology, Edge will increase accuracy, and, through the use of cloud technology, Edge will reduce system support tasks for the customer.”

Acrow Limited has erected a 112.6-metre-long temporary bridge across the Bayfield River to allow residents and visitors of Bayfield, Ontario to continue to navigate the town.

The Bayfield River Bridge, a 70-metre, two-span deck truss bridge on Highway 21 was constructed in 1949. By 2017, it had reached the end of its lifespan and preliminary planning for a full replace-ment began.

Highway 21 delivers access for local residents, as well as the region’s significant tourism industry. In order to avoid severing traffic, the approved project required the installation of a temporary bridge to provide an on-site detour for vehicles and pedestrians, while the replacement bridge was being rebuilt.

“In addition to the obvious safety benefits, detour bridges allow traffic to be maintained at full capacity and speed during construction, decreasing the im-pact on the travelling public and local businesses,” said Gordon Scott, director of operations and sales at Acrow Limited. “They also offer significant cost-savings by helping ensure a project stays on schedule – a key benefit for both contractors and government agencies alike.”

Acrow designed and provided a modular steel detour for the project consists of two 18.3 metre spans, and a third 76 metre span, for a total length of 112.6 metres, with a roadway width of 9.1 metres.

The temporary bridge has a TL-4 guard-rail system, a 1.5 metre cantilevered

sidewalk, and features an anti-skid epoxy aggregate deck surface.

The long length and heavy weight of the main span created numerous challenges for the launch and erection of the bridge. Due to the minimal footprint available to assemble components on-site, the components were delivered in stages to accommodate installation.

The bridge was erected on rollers, with additional rollers on top of the piers re-quired for ease of erection and a safe launch. The bridge was then moved to its final position, lowered and set on both abutment and pier bearings to complete construction.

Delivered to contractor Looby Construc-tion in mid-February, the rental bridge was constructed in about four weeks and opened to traffic on April 13.

It will remain in service for a minimum of 10 months while the replacement bridge is being built.

“The rental market has gained a strong foothold in the highway construction industry for its many benefits, and I will add to Mr. Scott’s words by writing that this Acrow Bridge will also provide significant regional trade benefits through the flow of commerce not being restricted,” said Acrow CEO Bill Killeen.

When Zeal Motors was created in 2018, its founders set out to solve the problem of moving people and materials to hard-to-reach jobsites.

The Quebec-based company’s solution is the Fat Truck, an in-dustrial off-road amphibious vehicle that’s capable of tackling the toughest terrain. Last year, Zeal introduced the �rst model of the vehicle, the Fat Truck 2.8 C.

�e vehicle is designed for indus-tries with remote or hard to reach locations, like pipelines, utilities, wind farms and mining, as well as search and rescue.

“Up until today, there was no easy solution for transporting people on jobsites,” said Amine Khimjee, one of Zeal Motors’ three founders. “People use pickup trucks, side-by-sides and even school buses, but when it gets messy, there’s no way to transport people. It’s impossible.

“Where the pickup stops, the Fat Truck will continue.”

Operated using a single joystick, the Fat Truck can climb or descend 70 per cent inclines, or sides hills with 40 per cent inclines. �e truck measures about 2.5 metres tall, 3.7 metres long and 2.5 metres wide.

�e vehicle is able to transport up to 8 people and travel at a max-imum speed of 40 km per hour. To travel over more di�cult terrain, the truck is equipped with low pres-sure wheels with 1 psi to 5 psi of air in the tires, which measure 1.5 metres tall by 60 cm wide.

“Since those tires are low pres-

sure, instead of going on an obstacle and getting punctured, they go over the obstacle and mold to the object. �is is why the vehicle is so good o�-road,” Khimjee said.

As well, the Fat Truck’s is equipped with a tire in�ation sys-tem that allows its driver to adjust the psi from inside of the cab.

“You can go from 0 psi to 5 psi in 17 seconds. While you’re driving, you can de�ate in and in�ate the tires depending on the terrain,” Khimjee said.

Weighing in at about 2,720 kg in a standard con�guration, the bottom of the Fat Truck is constructed of Hardox steel for durability, while the top is built using aluminum. �e engine is located in the centre of the bottom of the machine.

“It makes the vehicle very stable because all of the weight is down,” Khimjee said.

Caterpillar 2.2-litre, Tier 4 Final, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. A hydrostatic transmission allows independent control of the left and rights wheels. For braking, the Fat Truck utilizes the hydrostatic drive for positive deceleration.

“We’re the first ones on the market to introduce a Tier 4 Final engine into such a vehicle,” Kh-imjee said.

As well, the truck, equipped with a 69 litre fuel tank, uses on average 4.1 litres to 5.6 litres per hour of operations.

“�at will give you a fuel econ-omy for a full shift of work or even two days of work,” Khimjee said.

�e Fat Truck is also able to travel on water, at a maximum speed of 3.2 km per hour, even while carry-ing its full payload of about 1,000 kg.

“No matter if its 2 feet of water or 200 feet of water, it’s �oating,” Khimjee said.

Maintenance is also relatively simple. Oil changes are required once every 500 hours, and the Fat Truck doesn’t have any greasing points.

“Everything has been designed so that it’s water tight,” Khimjee said.

at Zeal Motor’s factory in Bromont, Quebec.

“�e beauty of the Fat Truck is it’s a full North American product with 60 per cent of the parts coming from the U.S., the rest from within 300 miles of the factory,” Khimjee said. “Only the wheels come from outside of North America.”

�e truck is also available with numerous options, including vari-ous lighting packages, amphibious trailers, a winch and vehicle remote control.

“Some people �t it with no seats, they want to put their generator or welder in the back,” Khimjee said. “It’s really like a pickup truck. Im-agine everything you can do with a pickup truck, the Fat Truck will do the same, and it will go to places a pick up can’t go.”

Tigercat has updated its 220E loader with several improvements, including an upgraded operator’s sta-tion and the addition of the Tigercat FPT power plant.

Conforming to Tier 2 and Tier 4 emission re-quirements, the quick and light-weight 220E is now powered by the Tigercat FPT N45 Tier 4 Final or the Tiger-cat FPT N67 Tier 2 engine, delivering 168 hp.

The totally redesigned operator’s station has an improved climate control system along with a num-ber of additional features to improve the operator ex-perience.

For example, the new heavy-duty suspension seat is wider and comes equipped with heating and cooling as a standard feature.

The seat has improved adjustability and many of the frequently used rock-er sw itches have b e en repositioned into the arm-rest-mounted joystick pod for enhanced ergonomics.

�e climate control system is further enhanced by the addition of window blinds for the front windshield and skylight.

Acoustical engineering along with the quiet Tiger-cat FPT engine contributes

to extremely low in-cab noise levels, while the new sound system, equipped with Bluetooth audio, allows for hands-free calling.

The cab also features an electronic control system with colour LCD display for machine monitoring and function adjustment, as well as the LogOn telematics sys-tem.

�e 220E loader includes a new main pump and larger hoses to the boom cylinders to provide faster boom and swing functions. Hydraulic component layout remains unchanged with hydraul-ic valves easily accessible underneath the deck plate cover, allowing for clean,

easy service access. �e updated electrical sys-

tem incorporates hydraulic pressure sensors that can be monitored on the dis-play in the cab, as well as improving fuel economy with an automatic engine idle down feature. An op-tional LED lighting package is also available.

The 220E loader is de-sig ne d for contractors requiring a truck-mounted loader for short wood and smaller tree-length pulp-wood or biomass loading applications. �e loader de-livers a maximum reach of 8.4 metres, and a lift capacity of 10,890 kg at 3.2 metres or 4,265 kg at 7.6 metres.

Epiroc says its new DH350 oil and gas drilling rig challenges conventional design, while o�ering advantages of Tier-1 class drilling rigs in a package that surpasses the mobility of any conventional rig on the market.

�e DH350 is the �rst of a new line of oil and gas drill-ing rigs from Epiroc. �e new single-piece substructure is a slingshot-style unit with integrated hydraulics to pro-vide the fewest number of connections ever required for full rig up.

The API certified sub-structure o�ers a 70-cm split master bushing with a max-imum table opening of 1.1 metres, which accommodates large diameter tools and com-

plex bottom hole assemblies.“�e DH350 combines the

mobility of carrier drive rigs with the power density of con-ventional skidded systems to produce one of the most agile and capable drilling rigs in the marketplace today,” said Cole Carpenter, product manager for Deephole Oil and Gas Rig at Epiroc Drilling Solutions. “We will continue to drive the paradigm shift in conventional rig design — the DH350, a step change in drilling e�ciency.”

�e Epiroc-designed 1,200 hp diesel-hydraulic power unit provides unparallelled distribution of hydraulic power for all drilling functions, while enabling a reduction in fuel consumption.

�e stand-alone HPU mini-mizes cycle time between wells by eliminating the ne-cessity of high voltage power from ancillary prime mov-ers and remains an integral component atop the DH350 substructure when walking the rig between wellheads.

The crownless telescop-ic mast, featuring 1.4 metre Nylatron sheaves, provides 158,757 kg of pullback and 22,679 kg of pulldown force through the tip-out hydraulic top drive.

�e twin spur gear power-head o�ers variable electric speed over hydraulic control with a maximum 30,000 foot-pounds of rotary torque, and the ability to handle single joints of Range III drill collars

up to 20 cm in diameter. �e top drive delivers substantial improvements to operator safety and delivers high quality pipe handling, when coupled with the integrated iron roughneck and remote operated catwalk.

The optimized load con-figuration and integrated hydraulics allow crane-free rig up in less than 12 hours with as few as six rig loads between drilling locations. �is allows operators to mini-mize cycle time and improve long-term well economics. The minimized load con-figuration is accomplished through a combination of streamlined skid-mounted components and single-piece assemblies transported via

purpose built trailer or in-tegrated subassembly axle groups. DH350 offers mul-

tiple premium con�gurations including hands-free BOP handling.

The Top Aggregate Pro-ducing Municipalities of Ontario (TAPMO) has asked the Ontario government to change property tax require-ments for quarries within the province.

Wellington County, along with other members TAPMO recently met with Stan Cho, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance, to discuss changing how ag-gregate properties are taxed across Ontario under an equitable valuation system.

The meeting was held

during the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference, where municipal and provincial policymakers discuss issues facing both levels of govern-ment.

TAPMO members deliv-ered several policy-driven ideas to Cho that would ad-just the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation’s (MPAC) property tax valua-tions for aggregate.

“We had a very productive conversation with Parlia-mentary Assistant Stan Cho about how the current MPAC system is forcing home-owners and businesses to pay more, and we are eager to continue this dialogue,” said Puslinch Mayor James Seeley.

“Under a policy-driven, equitable approach, MPAC can enable gravel pits to pay their fair share so that they can continue supporting the municipalities at a time when we need their help most.”

One proposed change is for the Ministry of Finance to create a separate property class for aggregate producing properties, as it did in 2015 for land�lls, which enabled municipalities to maintain stability in local taxation levels.

Other recommendations include the Ministry of Fi-nance issuing a directive to MPAC for how to assess these types of properties based on their industrial or market value, using the same land values as comparable properties in the area, or removing the exemption of aggregate in the Assessment Act that limits the ability of

MPAC to assess the full value of the property.

“COVID-19 has high-lighted the urgency for a policy-driven, equitable approach. Municipalities across Ontario are �ghting to continue providing a high standard of services to our families and businesses who need them now more than ever. The lost tax revenue undermines our ability to enhance those services at the time when our residents are suffering,” said Wellington County Warden Kelly Linton.

“We know aggregate pro-ducers want to be part of the solution in terms of helping families and businesses get back on their feet – the very people who are carrying the burden of the current MPAC system.”

TAPMO claims MPAC’s current property tax valu-ation structure is unfair, as active gravel pits incurs less property tax than sin-gle family homes and small businesses.

TAPMO also claims it leads to properties that are located in the same areas and are similar to gravel pits receiving di�erent property valuations, which contradicts the fairness and transparen-cy of the taxation system that similar properties should be treated and taxed equally.

While TAPMO notes that aggregate sites are important job creators and an increas-ingly critical element of public works that help to fuel steady economic growth, the sites generate signi�cantly less revenue for municipal-ities and the province than other possible land uses.

Manitowoc updates its diagnostics app and debuts new mobile tool kitManitowoc has updated its free diagnostic app to include Crane Control System (CCS)-equipped Potain tower cranes,

�e updated will help oper-ators to interpret diagnostic codes generated by on-board control systems and reduce machine downtime. The app already supports many

Grove, Manitowoc and Na-tional Crane cranes.

“This new functionality is another step in actively improving our digital tools and expanding our o�ering to provide customers with easy-to-use and valuable tools for a better user experi-ence with our products,” said John Alexander, director of

service, training and telem-atics at Manitowoc.

The diagnostic app in-creases crane uptime by enabling customers to diagnose technical issues without third-party assist-ance, leading to faster repairs and maintenance.

Manitowoc was the first manufacturer in the crane

industry to release an app of this kind in 2018.

Manitowoc has also re-l e a s e d a n e w w i re l e s s pressure transducer test kit to measure and record hydraulic pressures on all crane systems without the use of cumbersome hoses. �e kit communicates wire-lessly via Bluetooth with a

smartphone app and comes with two transducers �tted with Stau� pressure test con-nectors and two transducers �tted with Parker quick dis-connect connectors.

Also included in the kit are a #4 and #6 SAE J1453 ORFS adapter and two spare batteries.

A data logging option

allows users to quickly download and email the data collected.

With winter approaching, it is important to think about preparing your wheel loader for winter operation, specifically snow removal.

Before the first snowfall arrives, it is important to ensure your wheel loader is properly maintained and prepared to push, lift and dump snow.

Bill Zak, Doosan’s wheel loader product specialist, provides �ve tips to help oper-ators get the most out of their wheel loader this winter.

1. Review your manualsIt may seem like common sense, but it

can’t be overstated. Review your machine’s operation and maintenance manual for recommended intervals and a checklist of seasonal maintenance items, as well as oil and �uid recommendations.

Ideally, you and your wheel loader oper-ators should request maintenance training and assistance from your local equipment dealer on proper techniques, and familiarize yourself with decals and key maintenance points on the machine.

Your wheel loader operation and main-tenance manual should instruct you on what machine components should be inspected regularly.

�ey include the following:

· Fluids and �lters

· Battery

· Tire pressure

· Heating and defrosting systems

2. Check �uids and �lters Cold temperatures may affect a wheel

loader’s ability to run e�ciently, especially if it does not have the proper engine oil. �is is why it is important to match wheel loader �uids to the proper ambient temper-atures. Most wheel loader manufacturers recommend CJ4 engine oils to protect the machine’s vital engine components.

“If you use incorrect diesel engine oil, it can cause costly damage to the machine’s internal components,” Zak said. “These components can become plugged, corroded and ultimately, not work e�ciently. Make sure to refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on �lling your machine at the recommended intervals with the appropriate �uid in the correct increments.”

As well, verify the quality of fuel you are using from your provider, checking to make sure water and other contaminants are not present in your fuel.

“Switching to a special winter-blend fuel — typically No. 1 and No. 2 diesel — can help you prepare for cold temperatures,” Zak said. “Investing in quality fuel that is blended appropriately for the climate and season may give you better peace of mind,

lower your consumption, provide fewer �lter changes and deliver long component life.

“It’s a good idea to top o� the diesel tank at the end of the day or shift,” he said. “Overall, it’s a good practice to follow year-round. It reduces the air in the tank. �e wheel loader heats up during the day. When the operator turns it o�, it cools down, and no matter what, you start getting condensation in the tank.”

Another item to consider is the type of aftertreatment system, especially machines equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet Tier 4 emission standards. SCR components require diesel exhaust �uid (DEF). �is aqueous solution is susceptible to variations in hot and cold temperatures.

“In very cold temperatures, DEF can freeze, so wheel loader owners should make sure they keep DEF in storage during the winter months,” Zak said. “Purity and concentration are critical with DEF, so make sure to work with a local dealer to better understand how to store and handle DEF.”

As well, Zak recommends inspecting the air �ltration system and to always use the correct replacement �lter to reduce the risk of premature engine failure.

3. Inspect tires, batteriesand components Winter maintenance also means checking

the tires, batteries and other wheel loader components before using or storing the machine. Undetected leaks or improper inflation can lead to premature wear and potentially tire failure over time.

“Low tire pressure can decrease push capabilities, which is not ideal for snow removal applications,” Zak said. “Using L3 radial tires may be best during winter be-cause they provide good traction in snowy conditions. In�ating tires with nitrogen gas is a good alternative to assist in maintaining proper tire pressure.”

He also recommends all contractors and their operators become familiar with the manufacturer’s operation and maintenance manual for proper psi and in�ate the tires accordingly.

Before winter arrives, it is also important to inspect the wheel loader’s battery and charge.

“�ere is always a draw on the battery, so

unless the battery has been maintained or disconnected while stored, it will slowly run down and will need to be charged before use,” Zak said.

For batteries that need to be charged, a trickle charger can be connected to help build the voltage at a slower rate, improving the battery life. Battery connections should be inspected and cleaned at this time. Cor-roded terminals can cause hard starting and charging issues.

Furthermore, check the cab door and window seals to ensure there are no leaks or cracks, install a new windshield wiper blade and add low-temperature washer �uid. Be sure to replace any burnt-out bulbs to ensure your operators have the appropriate lighting when working in low light or at night.

4. Store the wheel loader insideCold weather requires batteries to gener-

ate nearly twice as many cranking amps in order to turn over.

If possible, in extreme cold, when the temperature falls below -18 Celsius, keep your wheel loader in a heated facility, as it is easier on the machine.

“If owners are not able to keep wheel loaders inside, it is important to park the machine out of the wind,” Zak said. “It is also advantageous to keep the equipment out of direct sunlight, if possible.”

If you are unable to keep your wheel loader inside a building, plug in the block heater, which is available as an option. A block

heater will help keep the machine’s engine warm, making it easier to start while reducing wear on engine components. If you do not have a block heater, consider purchasing and installing one in the fall.

Zak added a cool down procedure after a shift is a good practice to follow.

“If you’re working hard, even in very cold weather, everything heats up. If you let it cool down, it bene�ts the engine life. A lot of people immediately stop the machine when they are done working. Wait a few minutes before you shut o� your engine.”

5. Prepare attachmentsWheel loaders are valuable �eet assets dur-

ing winter for a number of reasons, but one of the most prominent is their ability to be �tted with application-speci�c attachments, which can be made easier with the use of optional quick couplers.

Attachments such as quick couplers, buck-ets, pallet forks and snow pushers deserve the same attention as the machine to which it is connected.

Perform visual checks of attachment com-ponents such as hoses, cylinders, guards and cutting edges for damage. As well, make sure snow pusher attachments interfacing with a bucket are properly secured with chains.

By following these �ve tips, you can be better prepared to tackle snow piles and help keep your machine running strong all winter.

Pictured here in the early 1930s is a Cham-pion crawler grader on demonstration clear-ing snow in Goderich, Ontario, where it was manufactured by Dominion Road Machinery.

Needing to get a plant set up in Canada in the early 1900s, the American Road Machin-ery Company created a subsidiary located in Goderich. In 1910, the average wage at the factory was 15 cents per hour.

By the 1920s, the plant was building crush-ers, screening plants, several sizes of horse and tractor pulled graders, rollers, sweepers, asphalt plants along with road maintainers. As early as 1915, Champion built front-mounted plows for trucks and tractors were part of their product line with powered graders on the horizon. Machines were shipped out by road, rail and lake freighters from Goderich's harbour location on Lake Huron.

�e grader picture here was powered by a McCormick-Deering Model 20 with gas engine and equipped with a Trackson crawler setup. �is concept did not catch on as it was cum-

bersome, di�cult to manoeuvrer and more expensive for the end user.

Wheeled versions were the focus in the 1930s with diesel power, tandem drive rear axles and hydraulic controls.

�e operator on this snow removal demon-stration with the �rst-built Champion crawler tractor grader was Mr. R.G Johnston, vice presi-dent of Dominion Roads Machinery.

By the 1950s the company decided to focus on building road graders and attachments. By 1977, the company became Champion Road Machinery Ltd. In the 1990s, Volvo Con-struction Equipment purchased the company and by 2000 had relocated production to Pennsylvania.

Western Products has developed three new tools for snow removal, including the Enforcer v-plow, new additions to its pile-driver pusher plow series and a new tractor mount kit.

The new Enforcer v-plow is available in stainless steel or pow-der-coated steel. As well, the v-plow features a blade width of 2.3 metres in straight blade mode and 2 metres in V-mode, and a blade height of 68 cm at the centre up to 83 cm at the outer edge, making it ideal for cleaning up smaller jobs and spaces.

�e new compact v-plow is con-structed of high-strength, low alloy steel, and is the ideal weight for half-ton trucks such as the GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

"We're always working on ex-panding our product o�erings, and that includes making sure we have equipment for all of our customers," said Doug Clark, product manager

for Western Products. "By adding the Enforcer v-plow to our lineup, we're able to give homeowners and contractors a plow they've been asking for."

�e Enforcer attaches easily with the Western UltraMount 2 mount-ing system and is engineered with the same features and bene�ts of Western’s full-size v-plows.Accessories for the plow include:

· 125 mm steel cutting edge

Other features include a trip-edge design that protects operators and their equipment when striking hidden obstacles, and UltraLock double-acting cylinders that hold the wings in place for e�cient back dragging, while also allowing oper-

ators to use the v-plow in straight blade mode by locking the wings together.

Customers can choose between LED or dual-halogen Nighthawk headlamps. The LED headlamps provide a full 180 degrees of light from plow edge to plow edge and produces up to twice the light output of traditional halogen bulbs. The dual-halogen headlamp option also o�ers improved brightness and reach with better low- and high-beam performance than traditional halogen headlamps.

Pile Driver plowsWestern Products has also an-

nounced the addition of three new sizes to the Pile Driver steel-edge pusher plows.

�e Pile Driver will now be avail-able in 3.65, 4.26 and 4.87 metre sizes, adding to their 2.44 and 3 metre o�erings.

The new sizes were designed with large pieces of construction

equipment in mind. With inter-changeable attachments, the Pile Driver pusher plows o�er the �ex-ibility to quickly attach to various pieces of equipment within a �eet, including backhoes, wheel loaders and tractors.

“We’re always committed to ex-panding our product offerings to help our customers handle all types of jobs, faster,” Clark said. “�is new line of steel-edge pusher plows does just that, and we’re excited to roll these out.”

According to Western, the two-piece, steel trip-edge design of the Pile Driver delivers a cleaner scrape for hard-packed snow and ice while protecting operators and their equipment against hidden bumps and obstacles. Floating attachment plates allow side-to-side movement, which keeps the pusher in contact with the surface at all times while �oating shoes keep the cutting edge level on uneven surfaces to maintain a clean scrape.

Designed to accommodate the demand for non-truck mounted snowplow applications, Western Products released the UltraMount 2 attachment kit for tractors. The all-new kits will accommodate the demand for non-truck mounted snowplow applications.

“All of the equipment we’ve re-leased was created to reach even more customers and applications, and this tractor mount helps us reach that goal,” Clark said.

Designed for easy installation onto a range of OEM tractor models, the kits allow the operator to attach Western heavy-duty straight blades, v-plows and winged plows to trac-tors, providing increased e�ciency and versatility.

A removable push beam allows for easy installation and removal of the plow. Also, with the attach-ment kit, there is no need for the operator to completely uninstall the mount when reattaching the loader system.

Fisher Engineering has released its all-new v-plow, the Fisher EZ-V, which is designed for contractors as well as homeowners.

In 1985, with just six employees, NPK Con-struction Equipment opened its doors just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.

�is year, the company celebrates 35 years since it established its roots in North America.

The company was created to serve as a distributor of the Japanese NPK’s con-struction and demolition attachments throughout the western hemisphere.

The NPKCE team worked diligently to promote the NPK brand in the western market where it was not yet widely known.

A comprehensive network of dealers was assembled across North and South America by partnering with dealerships of various construction and demolition machine manufacturers that could be equipped with NPK attachments.

Over the next four years demand for NPK attachments began to grow at a rate that out-paced production. So, to ensure supply met demand, NPKCE purchased a manufacturing facility, and began producing some compon-ents and products in the United States, which upped the company’s employee count to 45.

�e company evolved from an importer and distributor into a full-�edged manufacturer.

NPK originsNippon Pneumatic Manufacturing Co. was

established in Japan nearly a century ago. The company began manufacturing air

tools, and expanded into the productions of chemical processing equipment by 1945. In 1957 the construction equipment division was created, and NPK Japan developed the world’s �rst boom mounted pneumatic hammer. In 1972, NPK designed and built the �rst boom mounted hydraulic hammer: the foundation for today’s popular line of NPK hydraulic hammers. NPK also introduced the first boom mounted concrete crushers equipped with hydraulic booster in 1984.

�e NPK brand continued to gain popu-larity and demand continued to grow across the world. Over the course of many years, dealers were signed on in every corner of the world, and sales and manufacturing locations opened across Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East.

NPKCE growthBack in North America, NPKCE continued

to grow by expanding product lines as well as acquiring or expanding facilities throughout Ohio and into other states as the need arose.

By 2009, NPKCE had grown to employ more than 85 people, spread out among three interrelated buildings all within walk-ing distance of one another to streamline the production process.

In 2013, NPKCE acquired their long-time machining partner, Holmes Manufacturing, increasing the number of employees to more than 100. Soon after, NPKCE would expand its manufacturing facility, eventually mov-ing fabrication, machining and assembly divisions all under one roof.

NPKCE expanded its footprint outside of Ohio, as well. When the company found itself without a dealer to serve customers in Georgia, NPK Demotrax was created. NPK Demotrax served not only as a sales distributor, but also as a service and rental facility for customers throughout the state.

NPKCE also formed a partnership with German mining equipment manufacturer, Hermann Paus Maschinenfabrik to serve as a distributor for Paus’s mining vehicle line in North America. Paus was well-known throughout Europe, Russia and South Amer-ica for their high quality, purpose built mining vehicles and NPKCE had been a supplier of tunnelling hammers to Paus for several years. In 2017 a fourth building was added to the Walton Hills campus to serve the mining division.

Genesis acquisition In 2019, the opportunity arose for yet

another acquisition. Genesis Attachments, Genesis GmbH and Genesis Holdings were on the market and NPKCE took the oppor-tunity to obtain an additional attachment company that shared similar business and manufacturing standards as the NPK group.

Genesis Attachments is located in Superi-or, Wisconsin and has been in operation since 1997. Genesis GmbH is a distribution

facility located in Memmingen, Germany and was founded in 2002 to serve the Euro-pean market. With more than 125 additional employees from Genesis businesses, the employee count for NPKCE companies is now more than 250.

Link-Belt introduces two new grapples

Canada’s Priestly Demoli-tion and Budget Demolition have both been shortlisted in several categories of the 2020 World Demolition Awards.

As par t of the World Demolition Summit, the winners of the awards will be announced on Nov. 12. The event is organized by Demolition & Recycling International in co-oper-ation with the European Demolition Association and the National Demolition Association of the United States.

In the Safety and Training category, Budget Demoli-tion, based in Hamilton, Ontario, was nominated for achieving its Certificate of Recognition in health and safety accreditation after a �ve-year overhaul of its en-tire safety program. Priestly is also nominated for achieving a Certi�cate of Recognition in Ontario, and has started bringing safety and train-ing programs in-house for increased �exibility.

In the Urban Demoli-tion under US$10 million category, Budget is nomin-ated for its work at the Old Windsor City Hall, which presented challenges in-cluding limited site access, limited workspace, dust mi-gration and nearby historic monuments.

For the Collaboration in Demolition award, Priestly

is shortlisted for its work on the demolition portion of the Province House historic site conservation project on Prince Edward Island.

Priestly is also shortlisted for Contract of the Year US$1 million or over for the first phase of the Victor Mine Demolition, near Attawap-iskat in a remote part of Northern Ontario.

Caterpillar’s 352 UHD Ultra High Demolition excavator is designed to tackle di�cult demolition of tall structures using a range of Cat demoli-tion attachments.

As well, the UHD front can be switched for a straight or bent (retro�t) boom position for lower-level demolition and earthmoving applica-tions. The switch typically requires about 15 minutes and two people with no special tool required. Further-more, the 352 UHD features a hydraulically activated, vari-able-gauge undercarriage, as well as the Cat Active Stability Monitoring system, which continuously informs the operator of work tool position within a safe working range and warns when approaching stability limits.

In the UHD configura-tion, the 352 UHD delivers 28 metres of vertical height to the work tool attachment pin, and 15.8 metres of horizontal reach, when working with a 3.7 tonne tool. �is allows the 352 UHD to quickly demolish structures that are eight or nine stories high, with pre-cision and control thanks to the electro-hydraulic control system.

�e undercarriage gauge is 4 metres to optimize stability, and 3 metres for transport with 60 cm track shoes.

For retro�t straight boom con�guration, the 352 UHD uses a 9.1-metre retro�t boom with a choice of 2.9-metre

or 3.35-metre retrofit stick. Equipped with the longer stick and a 3.08 cubic metre bucket, the 352 UHD has a digging depth of 6.7 metres and a maximum reach at ground level of nearly 12 metres.

Cat’s demolition cabThe Cat demolition cab

features a falling objects guard structure (FOGS) and includes front and roof lamin-ated glass with a P5A impact rating. �e cab tilts 30 degrees for an optimum line of sight to the work tool and for a more productive, more comfort-able working position for the operator.

The windshield and roof glass feature one-piece, parallel wipers with three intermittent settings with washer spray. A heated and cooled seat is standard.

�e left console tilts up for easy cab entry and exit, while advanced viscous mounts reduce cab vibration up to 50 per cent, compared with pre-vious excavator models, and controls are easily accessed.

�e 352 UHD is equipped with rearview and right-hand sideview cameras as stan-dard. �e machine is also able to accept a work-tool cam-era, which can be installed by the Cat dealer with a kit. �e standard radio has USB ports and Bluetooth technology to connect personal devices and to make hands-free calls.

In the cab, each joystick

button can be programmed, including power mode, re-sponse and pattern, and these settings can be recalled using appropriate operator identi�cation. An automatic hydraulic oil warmup feature quickly brings the system to operating temperature and helps prolong component life. A high resolution 25 cm touchscreen monitor allows fast navigation, including operating and maintenance tutorials.

Cat C13 engine�e 352 UHD is powered

by the Cat C13 engine, rated at 408 hp, and meets Tier 4 Final emissions standards. As well, the C13 is capable of operating on biodiesel up to B20.

Operators can also match machine performance to the task with three power modes, while a new high e�ciency, hydraulic, reversing fan cools the engine on demand to help reduce fuel consumption.

When using the retrofit boom, the machine can use the Cat Grade with 2D grade control system, swing e-fen-cing and the Cat Payload on-board weighing system. The payload system can be used with the VisionLink online telematics interface to remotely manage produc-tion targets via the machine’s Product Link.

checks and fuel system water drains speed routine service. Filter life and maintenance intervals can be tracked via the in-cab monitor. All fuel filters can be changed at a synchronized 1,000 hours, and oil and fuel filters are grouped on the right-hand side of the machine for easy access. The engine air in-take filter with precleaner has double the dust holding capacity of the previous �lter, and the hydraulic oil filter provides improved �ltration performance, and anti-drain valves to keep oil clean when the �lter is replaced at a 3,000-hour interval. Oil sampling ports simplify maintenance and allow for easy extraction of �uid samples for analysis.

Brad Boehler has joined the Alamo Group as vice president of the forestry and tree care business unit and president of Mor-bark Holdings.

Boehler is the successor to Dave Herr, who joined Morbark initially as a board dir-ector and then as its CEO in October 2016.

“It has been an honour and privilege to lead Morbark and be able to work with so many talented and dedicated individuals during my time here,” Herr said. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished during this time and extremely optimistic about the future. Brad is an exceptional and proven leader, and I look forward to working with him to ensure a smooth transition and the Business Unit’s continued success under his guidance.”

Herr led the company through a period of intense growth, operational improvement, acquisition and integration of comple-mentary businesses, including Rayco Manufacturing and Denis Cimaf, and the transfer of ownership to Alamo Group in 2019.

“Dave will surely be missed, but we wish him continued success in the future and thank him for his many contributions to Morbark’s success and to Alamo Group,” said Je� Leonard, executive vice president of Alamo Group’s industrial division.

Before joining Alamo Group, Boehler was president of the Skyjack Group. Dur-ing his sixteen years at Skyjack, he led the company through a period of high growth

and performance improvement. Before joining Skyjack, he worked for

seven years at Tigercat in various engin-eering and technical positions.

Boehler is also a veteran of the Canadian Forces, having served as an engineering officer in the Construction Engineering Section.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Sci-ence in Civil Engineering granted by the University of Western Ontario and has completed the Executive Development Pro-gram at the Ivey Business School. Boehler, who is from Alberta, and his wife Melinda, will be relocating to Central Michigan in the coming months.

Perkins Engines Company has announced that Bill Giunta has accepted the position of Americas sales director, leading industrial engine sales execution for Perkins products within the Americas region.

Giunta, who recently served as the company’s pro duct and te chnical support manager, will also work closely with Perkins distributors across the re-gion to further the delivery of distribution excellence to all

Perkins-powered customers. “Bill has an extensive back-

ground in commercial, sales and marketing disciplines from his time at Perkins,” said Jaz Gill, Perkins vice president of global sales, marketing, service and parts for Perkins. “With his experience in lead-ing diverse global teams, he is ideally suited to this position.”

Following Trevor Toulson’s retirement, Richard Hem-mings has been promoted to the position of Europe Af-rica and Middle East (EAME)

sales director. Hemmings is responsible for sales to direct Electric Power (EP) original equipment manufacturers and Perkins distributors in EAME.

Most recently, Richard was EP sales manager in EAME, where his notable achievements included a strengthening of relationships with Perkins’ large EP original equipment manufacturers. �ose stronger relationships resulted in closer collabor-ation and business growth.

“Richard is passionate about ensuring our customers thrive, and his customer-fo-cused approach is key to our joint success,” Jaz said.

“He also has a proven abil-ity to establish and articulate a clear direction with his teams and a focus on deliv-ering results.”

Giunta continues to be based at the Seguin, Texas, facility in the United States, while Hemmings is located at the Peterborough, United Kingdom, facility.

Perkins announces two new regional sales directors

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has announced that Nick Block will join their team as director of worldwide marketing, sales and customer support, following the retirement of David Ho�man.

After more than 41 years of service at John Deere, Ho�man has announced his retirement.

He has held positions of increasing responsibility for John Deere in product engineering, factory marketing, cus-tomer and product support, and branch operations both in the United States and Europe. For the last two years, Ho�man has led the John Deere Power Systems sales, marketing and product support function.

“Dave has enabled the transformation of the global JDPS sales and marketing or-ganization,” said Pierre Guyot, senior vice

president of John Deere Power Systems. “We are thankful for his contributions to John Deere and con�dent he has laid a strong foundation for his successor, Nick Block.”

Block has more than 20 years of ex-perience within marketing, sales and customer support in the John Deere Ag & Turf division and Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG).

He recently served as a regional director for ISG in Latin America. Under Block’s leadership, precision technology adoption and engagement grew rapidly in the region, bringing value to customers, dealers and the John Deere business.

Fecon has hired Robert Soeh-ner as vice president of oper-ations, and Mike Kucharski as vice president of dealer development.

Both roles are new pos-itions within the company.

Soehner has served in a variety of continuous improvement and leader-ship roles including positions of increasing responsibility at GE, Henny Penny, Har-mon and most recently as vice president of operations at Skillcraft.

He holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Univer-sity of Cincinnati, and an MBA from Xavier University. As vice president of operations, he will lead the purchasing, quality and manufacturing teams. He strives to imple-ment tools for continuous improvement and “continue to develop a respectful, col-laborative culture.”

Kucharski, who has ex-tensive experience in dealer development, has spent the past 16 years with Caterpillar

or its dealers, most recently working on the post purchase experience for Caterpillar.

He holds a BS in Business Administration from South-ern Illinois University. In addition to his responsibilities for establishing, training and growing the dealer network, Kucharski is also responsible for all marketing activities including internal and exter-nal communications, trade shows, advertising, e-com-merce, website and digital solutions.

Established in 1992 near Cincinnati, Fecon manufac-tures the Bull Hog forestry mulcher. �e company also

manufactures tracked carri-ers, tractors and a full range of attachments and equipment for vegetation management.
