Adam Blyweiss STAFF WRITER While Drexel’s graduate and undergraduate student govern- ments announced that their con- stituents didn’t support new plans for commencement, senior accounting major Tina Bradley did her class a favor and made some phone calls. She was looking for a site that could accommodate an estimat- ed 2,000 degree recipients and their 8,000 guests. she wanted it in June. She wanted it on a Sunday. She didn’t want it in Drexel’s Physical Education Athletic Center. As far as she knew, nobody did. She couldn’t have it at the Philadelphia Civic Center’s Convention Hail. As far as she knew, nobody could. Drexel’s traditional commencement site was unavailable, ready to be sold, not an option. Or so she thought. The Civic Center, and Facility Director Robert Goslin, is where the calls stopped. “[Goslin] said that not only was the date [Sunday, June 16, 1996] open, but it was tentatively booked for Drexel,” said Bradley. Neither Bradley nor Goslin knew exactly who made Drexel’s See Graduation on page 2 Big events new focus for CAB Karen Ostrowski STAFF WRITER The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will soon be restructuring to accommodate a new system of planning campus events, one that will emphasize bigger, less frequent events. CAB President Lynne Capraro said, “We feel as thought stu- dents would rather attend fewer events which feature big name performers rather than many smaller events.” Despite the change in focus, many of CAB’s events will remain the same. Programs such as Winter Weekend, Spring Jam, Friday Night Flicks Plus and Late Skate will continue as usual. In addition, there will be a lec- turer in February, college hoops party in March and an Intern- ational Festival during spring term. John Gruber EDITOR-IN-CHIEF There’s bad news on the hori- zon for compact disc junkies who frequent Discovery Discs. According to co-owner Tony Hall, the discount and used CD retailer has been notified that it’ll be forced to leave the University of Pennsylvania’s Houston Hall “sometime in the next year.” “Most likely they’re going to move out all the non-food stores and renovate the basement,” Hall said. Penn’s loss, however, might be Drexel’s gain. With the Dragon Shops in MacAlister Hall scheduled to open in a few weeks. Creese Student Union would seem a logical choice for a new home. “W e’re considering it,” said Hall, “but unfortunately they have no space big enough for us.” According to Hall, there’s only about 600 square feet of space still available at the Dragon Shops. Discovery Discs’ current space in Houston Hall totals “around 800 [square feet]. We’d really rather have about 1,000 [square feet].” Hall said there are no other University City sites under con- sideration. Anh Dang STAFF WRITER It took 11 years to put an end to Drexel’s most sensational murder mystery. A former Drexel University security guard with a fetish for women’s feet and sneakers was convicted of murder Saturday Dec. 2 in the 1984 slaying of a Drexel student. After three days of delibera- tions, a jury found David Dickson Jr., 35, guilty of murder in the second degree in the death of 20-year-oId Deborah Lynn Wilson. In May, the first jury to hear the case could not reach a verdict and a mistrial was declared. Dickson faces a possi- ble life sentence when he is sen- tenced next year. The dead woman’s family wept as the verdict was read. “It’ll help an awful lot,” the vic- tim’s father, Joseph Wilson, said afterwards. “W e’ve been living with this for so long.” On Friday afternoon, jurors had informed Judge Juanita Kidd Stout that they were deadlocked. But she told them to keep trying after polling the jurors and find- ing that 11 of the 12 wanted to keep deliberating. The eight women and four men returned Saturday morning and reached a verdict about 2:30 p.m. Dickson’s lawyer, Harry R. Seay, said Saturday he planned to appeal on grounds of miscon- duct by the prosecution. Ass- istant District Attorney Roger King dismissed the accusation. “If anybody crossed the line in this case it’s the defense," King said. See Murder on page 4

The saga continuesThe commencement controversy rumbled on for anoth
er week as a member o f the senior class announced that Drexel had made tentative reservations for the Civic Center for a Sunday in June.
While not necessarily a shocking discovery, the idea is interesting and disturbing. Although never stated direcdy, the message behind Dr. Papadakis’ and Dr. Joblin’s message has been singular: Forget the Civic Center, we don’t want it.
At the very least, this tentative booking is deceptive. It is entirely possible that the Civic Center is such poor condition that the PEAC is a reasonable alternative, but neither Papadakis nor Joblin is saying that. So, students are left to speculate and investigate on tJieir own — and subsequently draw their own conclusions.
The collective message from USGA and GSA is clear. Students, both undergraduate and graduate, do not like the current commencement proposal. For an administration so vehemently in favor o f promoting the welfare of students, it’s very difficult to begin to understand its motivation.
