Itgivesmegreatpleasuretowelcomeallofyoutothe2ndHPBUpdateSymposiumheldthisyearattheTJDanarajAuditorium,FacultyofMedicine,UniversityofMalaya,KualaLumpur.

The event started with “live surgery” workshop on 15thDecember 2017 for commonhepatobiliary surgeries involvinglimitednumberofdelegates.Thisisthefirst^meaworkshopisarranged and due to overwhelming response, we hope toaccommodatemorepar^cipantsinthefuture.

Following that, on 16th December 2017, a symposium incollabora^onwith College of Surgeons, AcademyofMedicine(CSAMM) is organized to keepmedical officers, postgraduatedoctors, general surgeons and hepatobiliary trainees updatedonthelatestadvancesindiagnosis,managementandresearchofhepatobiliarydiseases.

This year’s landmark mee^ng draws many local as well asinterna^onalexpertstopresentthelatestdataontheirspecificareasofinterestandsharetheirexperienceindealingwithHPBissuesthatares^llwidelydebatedbyexpertsworldwide.

ItisourhopethatthroughthisyearlyHPBupdatesymposium,doctorswillkeepabreastofcurrentdiagnos^candtherapeu^cstrategies including best surgical op^ons pertaining to HPBdisorders. We also hope to cul^vate interest of buddingsurgeonsinthefieldofhepatobiliaryandpancrea^csurgery.

Theorganizingcommifeeasagroupofvolunteershasworkedvery hard in pugng together an interes^ng scien^ficprogramme to cater to various category of doctors. We areproudtoget thebestpeople in thefieldofHPBtospeakandmoderateonvariousinteres^ngtopicsinthissymposium.

Pierce Chow is Co-Director (Surgical) of the Comprehensive Liver Cancer Clinic at theNa^onalCancerCentreSingaporeandSeniorConsultantSurgeoninHPBandTransplantSurgery at the Singapore General Hospital. He is concurrently Professor and CourseDirectoratDuke-NUSMedicalSchoolSingapore,AdjunctFacultyattheGenomeIns^tuteof Singapore and Research Director at the Ins^tute of Molecular and Cell BiologySingapore.ProfessorChowwastheChapterofSurgeon’sGoldMedalistattheconjointRoyalCollegeof Surgeons of Edinburgh/M.Med (Surgery) examina^on in 1994 and subsequentlycompleted a clinical fellowship in Liver Transplanta^on at the Queensland LiverTransplant Service. In 1995, he was recipient of the Young Surgeon’s Award of theAcademyofMedicineSingaporeforhisresearchintothepatho-physiologyofliverbloodflowandregenera^on.In addi^on to managing a busy HPB surgical oncology service, Pierce has researchedextensively on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He leads collabora^ve research on thegenomicheterogeneityofHCCandapplica^onsinprecisionmedicine.Heco-foundedtheAsia-Pacific Hepatocellular Carcinoma Trials Group in 1997 and has been the protocolchairof5mul^-na^onaltrials.In2012theNa^onalMedicalResearchCouncilSingaporeconferred him the Na^onal Outstanding Clinician-Scien^st Award for improving clinicaloutcomesofpa^entswithhisresearchonLiverCancer.ProfChowwasawardedtheNMRCTransla^onal-ClinicalResearchGrantfortheFlagshipProgram in Liver Cancer in 2016 and has commenced themul^-na^onal PLANET study(PrecisionMedicineinLiverCancerAsia-PacificNetwork).

Tan-ToCheungistheChiefoftheDivisionofHepatobiliaryandPancrea^cSurgerywithintheDepartmentofSurgery,QueenMaryHospital, theUniversityofHongKongandtheCouncilmemberoftheHongKongSocietyofHepatobiliaryandPancrea^cSurgery.HeisalsoAssociateProfessorofSurgeryattheUniversityofHongKong.Dr.CheungreceivedhismedicaldegreeintheUniversityofHongKong.Aoergradua^ng,Dr.CheungstartedhiscareerasaSurgeoninQueenMaryHospitalandwithhisinterestin complicated liver surgeryand liver transplanta^onhebecamea staffmember in theDivision of Hepatobiliary and Pancrea^c Surgery since 2006. Dr. Cheung is one of theleadingexpertsinlaparoscopicliverresec^oninHongKong.Inaddi^on,hehasledagoodnumberofmul^disciplinaryclinicaltrialsonthetreatmentofHCC.Heiskeenonnewproceduresdevelopmentandisanac^veresearcherinthefieldoflivertransplant, complicated liver surgery, ALPPS procedures,minimally invasive surgery forliver cancer and the role of dual tracer PET CT on diagnosis of HCC. Dr. Cheung hasobtainedhispostgraduatedoctoraldegree(MasterofSurgeryHKU)ontheresearchoftreatment of HCC in liver cirrhosis. He is the world leading expert in the area of highintensityfocusedultrasound(HIFU)therapyforHCC.HeperformedthefirstHIFUtherapyforpa^entswai^ngforlivertransplantintheworld.Dr.CheungistherecipientoftheGBOngtravellingFellowshipAward.Hehaswonmanyothersinvariousinterna^onalmee^ngs.Hehasauthoredmorethan170peer-reviewedar^cles and other publica^ons, is frequently invited to lecture interna^onally includingpresenta^onsinplenarysessions,andhasmentoredalargenumberoftrainees.

Adrian Chiow is a Consultant Hepatobiliary and Pancrea^c (HPB) Surgeon at theDepartmentofSurgery,ChangiGeneralHospital (CGH)andaVisi^ngConsultantwith theDepartment of HPB and Transplanta^on, Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Dr. Chiow’ssubspecialityinterestisinminimallyinvasive(laparoscopicandrobo^c)prac^ceofHPB.He graduated withMBBS from the University of Melbourne (Australia) with Honours in2003andcompletedtraininginGeneralSurgeryatSinghealthandEasternHealthAlliancewithSpecialistAccredita^onBoardcer^fica^on in2012.Hesubsequentlycommencedhisspecialist HPB training in CGH before undergoing further subspeciality clinical trainingunder the Human Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) award in 2013 foradvancedandminimallyinvasive(laparoscopic/robo^c)HPBSurgeryunderthetutelageofProfessor Nicholas O’Rourke at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. Sincereturningfromfellowship,hestartedtheAdvancedLaparoscopicHPBservicein2014andtheRobo^cHPBprogramin2016inCGH.He is ac^vely involved in undergraduate teaching as senior clinical lecturer and MBBSExaminerwiththeYongLooLinSchoolofMedicine,Na^onalUniversityofSingaporeaswellas Adjunct Assistant Professor for Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He serves aconcurrent role as Associate Programme Director for the Singhealth General SurgeryResidencyProgram.Dr.Chiow’sresearch interestsare in improvingclinicaloutcomesandqualityoflifeforpa^entsundergoingminimallyinvasiveHPBsurgery.

Dr.CatherineTehiscurrentlytheChairoftheDepartmentofSurgeryinNKTI,co-Directorof theLiverCenterofNKTI.Shealsoservesas theChiefof theSec^onofHepatobiliaryPancrea^c Surgery of the Maka^ Medical Center. She is ac^vely involved in variousprojects inHPBsocie^eslocallyandinterna^onally.SheiscurrentlythesecretaryofthePhilippine Associa^on of HPB surgeons, founding member of the Interna^onalLaparoscopicLiverSociety,memberoftheCSEcommifeeintheAPHPBAandIHPBA.Shewas recently awarded in Toronto as one of the MOST INFLUENCIAL FILIPINA IN THEWORLDasanINNOVATORandTHOUGHTLEADERINHEALTHCARE.DrTehisapioneerinmajorandcomplexHPBsurgeries.Sheisapioneerinlaparoscopicmajorliverresec^onsinthecountry.Herothercontribu^onsincludeinves^gatorini^atedoutcomeresearchesonHPBsurgeryandmanagementofHPBdisease.SheisthePrincipalinves^gator of the Asian Registry for Liver Mets. A strong advocate of MDT(mul^disciplinaryteam)approachinthetreatmentofcancer,sheintroducedandsetupMDT in her ins^tu^on as the standard approach to managing cancer. As part of theEGOSLIM(ExpertGrouponOncosurgeryofLiverMetastases),theinterna^onalconsensusguidelines on the management of liver metastases from colorectal cancer has beenformedandpublished.Her other hospital affilia^ons include St Luke’s Medical Center, The Medical City andChineseGeneralHospital.
