‘Threats to US and partners will not go unanswered’Doha

The US said yesterday that two long-distance warplanes flew across

the Middle East as part of a simulated international bombing exercise amid tense haggling on restoring a nuclear deal with Iran.

Top US General Lt. Gen. Alexus Gryn-kewich said the “Bomber Task Force” simulation on Sunday showed that the US and its allies can “rapidly inject over-whelming combat power into the region on demand.”

“Threats to the US and our partners will not go unanswered,” added Grynke-wich, commander of the combined forces air component of US Central Command,

an area that covers Northeast Africa, the Middle East and as far as Central and South Asia.

The general did not name potential ad-versaries but the US is locked in intense negotiations over reviving a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program.

The US said last week that Iran’s re-sponse to the latest proposed deal was “not constructive.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said yesterday that it had not received any official US reaction to its demands.

European-brokered talks on restoring the 2015 accord — abandoned by the US in 2018 — have been ongoing in Vienna since April last year, but have repeatedly stalled.

Successful rare kidney operation for seven-month babyTDT | Manama

A King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) team re-

moved the right kidney from a seven-month baby.

Led by KHUH Chief of Staff and Consultant Paediatric Sur-geon Professor Martin Corbali, the team performed the rare re-section (nephrectomy) on the baby girl.

“The girl was suffering from severe swelling in the right side,” said Prof Corbally, noting that tests showed the presence of a 50 ml Wilms cancerous tumor in the right kidney, which is consid-ered large compared to the age of the infant.

The baby girl first underwent chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumour to avoid bleeding during surgery or rupture of the

tumour, provided that the exci-sion process would be carried out after six weeks.

The medical team decided to perform the surgery immediate-ly due to the baby’s health con-dition and the spreading cancer in the kidney. Doctors also con-cluded that chemotherapy might expose the baby girl to future complications due to her age. Surgeons performed the radical kidney resection, as the baby lost only 5 ml of blood, which is a very small percentage compared to other resections, due to the use of the latest techniques to prevent bleeding during surgery.

“The surgery was performed without any side effects and the patient recovered a few days af-ter undergoing the surgery,” said Professor Corbally. The delicate operation in progress

Reopening of schools fuels traffic jams across Kingdom

With thousands of students and school employees returning to educational institutions, the road network is going to face immense pressure

Staff ReporterTDT | Manama

Commuters are having dif-ficulty across the King-dom due to heavy traffic

near schools and highways, a day after school resumed.

Sunday being the first day of school turned out to be momen-tous for both students and their parents. However, the traffic congestion played a spoilsport throughout the day.

Speaking to The Daily Trib-une, Badusha P K, an expat and local driver, said: “The traffic peaked during the mornings and evenings when parents as well as hired drivers rushed to drop and pick children on the premises of schools.

“They create traffic jams near schools that would soon trickle down into highways and other road networks, making it tough for commuters. Yesterday I had to take detours and detours to escape the traffic jams.

“Traffic tailbacks were main-ly experienced on Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway, Al Estiqlal Highway, Shaikh Salman High-way and Budaiya Highway. Ow-ing to road construction activi-ties, traffic jams are now com-mon in Juffair too,” he added.

Echoing a similar view, a res-ident of JidAli said, “The area

is already crowded, and the reopening of schools and play schools in this sector is adding to chaos. People who have to leave for work must now plan ahead of time to avoid getting stuck in traffic.”

Although marking the start of the new school year, the depart-ments and directors of the Min-istry of Interior took all neces-sary security and organisational measures and arrangements to ensure the safety of students and uninterrupted flow of traffic, bottlenecks often appear across roads, especially during the school going and leaving hours.

The General Traffic Depart-ment has taken serious steps to ensure traffic flow by distribut-ing traffic orders and patrols, as well as monitoring movement

and following up on student safe crossings.

Previously, the Ministry of Ed-ucation hosted a workshop to prepare for the start of the new school year and to provide in-formation on various aspects of traffic regulations near schools.

“This course is part of our careful planning to ensure the safety of kids when they return to school. We were keen to ac-quaint the security guards with a variety of potential scenarios and how to handle them dur-ing the training in order to pre-pare them to act quickly when anything seemed out of the norm,” Professor Muhammad Al Abbasi, Head of the School Safety and Security Department at the Ministry of Education, pointed out.

HM King is hailed for directives to improve education servicesTDT | Manama

The Cabinet extended its gratitude to His Majesty

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his directives to further im-prove the Kingdom’s education services.

It also commended His Roy-al Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for

his order to arrange a parent in-duction day to be held by public schools, to introduce parents and guardians to the educational and administrative bodies.

This came as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, yester-day chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting at Gudaibiya Palace.

At the induction, parents and

guardians were also given a folder with information on the new academic year, which has facilitated the preparation for the reinstatement of in-person learning across all educational institutions.

The Cabinet noted the posi-tive response from parents and guardians on the initiative, and commended the efforts of the Ministry of Education and the

educational and academic bod-ies across public schools, for ensuring a successful induction day for parents.

It reviewed a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Education regarding the proce-dures for the induction day.

The Cabinet highlighted the importance of the official talks held in Paris between His Majesty King Hamad and

Three Asian men acquitted of selling alcoholTDT | Manama

The Lower Criminal Court has acquitted three Asian

men of selling alcoholic drinks due to a lack of evidence.

They were sent for trial after police officers searched their apartment and found many al-coholic beverages.

“My client, while he was asleep, police officers entered

his apartment and searched it. The apartment is composed of three rooms, and my client was sleeping in one of the rooms. It’s a shared apartment, there-fore the other two rooms were locked. My client informed the police officers that he didn’t have the keys to the two other rooms,” the first defendant’s lawyer told the judges at the Lower Criminal Court.

She added: “The police of-ficers found the beverages in one of the other two rooms. There is no evidence against my client, while also the bottles, although their number was big, it doesn’t mean that they were for sale.”

The Court acquitted the trio of wrongdoing but ordered the seizures of the bottles because they included ethyl.

Reopening of schools is a ‘stress for telecom sector’ Internet service providers will see a cut in their businesses as children return to schools after a gap of two years Staff Reporter

TDT | Manama

While the students, parents and children are overwhelming-

ly excited and happy after the schools reopened marking the beginning of the new school year, an industrial segment is slightly under stress, contem-plating a fall in future revenues.

Since the pandemic season began, the telecom sector has been immensely profiting with the role of Internet services in the education segment sig-nifying in an unprecedented manner.

Many schools and education-al institutions in the Kingdom would partner with telecom companies to help with the shift from off-line to online and dis-tance learning as the campuses were shut starting March 2020 to limit the spread of coronavi-rus. Telecom companies also rolled out new offers for the student community, which in-cluded monthly packages for uninterrupted and fast Internet services. The monthly services often charged parents between BD12 and BD20, opening up a

new revenue stream for these telecom companies.

“The reopening of schools will definitely cut one revenue stream for the telecom compa-nies in the Kingdom and they could experience a slight dip in their revenues,” an industry expert told The Daily Tribune.

“But this is no way going to affect the overall business po-tential or revenue targets of the Kingdom’s telecom companies as the scale of their operations are quite big,” the expert point-ed out.

Speaking to The Daily Trib-une, a parent said he cancelled an Internet service that was costing him BD12 a month as his

children are back in schools say-ing goodbye to online classes.

“I can’t really say that I am saving BD12 a month because my expenses have only increased in the form of transport and other things,” he added.

The Daily Tribune earlier reported on the health issues faced by students after being made to sit before the comput-ers for hours together as part of pursuing online classes.

Many children suffered from frequent headaches, eye pain or bloodshot eyes after being made to attend extensive on-line classes. There were also medical studies, which showed an increase in the incidences of

squint eyes among the children. A recent study conducted by

the Kingdom’s Telecommuni-cations Regulatory Authority (TRA) showed that fibre broad-band plans offered by the oper-ators in Bahrain have the lowest charges in the GCC.

The study by TRA also found that Bahrain’s telecom opera-tors compete on a regional and Arab level for mobile servic-es, especially in charge of the high-usage packages.

The Kingdom’s fixed broad-band charges for high speeds have been reduced by 67 per cent between 2019 and 2021, according to the study.

With an average mobile broadband usage at 28GB per month, at high usage levels of 10GB and more, Bahrain is more competitive than other GCC countries, the study asserts.

The number of homes with fibre broadband has increased substantially owing to the re-duction in broadband prices and continued fibre rollout.

As per the latest market data, 65pc of households in Bahrain have fibre broadband services, compared to 42pc in 2019, not-ing an increase of subscriptions by 34pc.

Students’ dependence on the Internet was at peak high due to online classes throughout the pandemic season

Financial Institutions (FIs): Model Risk is critical to avoid exposure from Financial and Regulatory Risks

TDT | Manama

The recent market volatility and macroeconomic trends

demands a significant change in the models used by banks (e.g., business, risk, compliance). The fact that this could alter and im-pact the model outcomes, FIs realize the need for a strategic change management process built around strong governance to facilitate effective imple-mentation and compliance with MRM standards.

Inadequate practices and standards regarding model de-velopment and usage has led to widespread attention and ex-posure while also facilitating sub-optimal lending decisions, and pricing that can impact fi-nancial performance. This then may lead to a domino effect on steering parameters of FIs, in-cluding profitability, operational efficiency, capital requirements, etc. This is evident across mod-els covering credit risk, mar-ket risk or operational risk, and even include models enhanced by machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Haie Lawrenz, a member of KPMG’s Global Mod-el Risk Management Working Group: “The global financial cri-sis showed us that model risk is real and that the consequences can be far-reaching. In the past some banks have suffered from significant financial and rep-utational damages due to the use of uncalibrated models or

the use of inappropriate mod-els to address considered risks. Additionally, the importance of models for business decisions have increased significantly as we see the inclusion of AI and ML models in the new digital busi-ness models and sales channels.”

Regulators meanwhile are in-tensifying their focus on Model Risk Management (MRM), with regulatory inspections and ex-ams connected to MRM increas-ing and regulators publishing new guidance. Most FIs imple-ment their general approaches to MRM based on the require-ments of the US Federal Reserve/OCC’s SR11-7 guidelines. Since then, other significant initiatives — including the European Cen-tral Bank’s (ECB) Target Review of Internal Models (TRIM) in 2017, the ECB guide to internal models in 2018, and guidance from the Bank of England (BOE) Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) - continue to emerge and

significantly evolve as supervi-sors aim to contain model risk through enhanced MRM govern-ance and concepts.

“We are experiencing an in-creasing demand in stakeholder expectations which is driving a positive impact on risk manage-ment. Regulators, sharehold-ers, and board members around the world are pushing for an increase in sophisticated risk management protocols across at an enterprise level covering capital, liquidity, and even credit and cost forecasting. Regulatory attention on this matter is ac-celerating the level of guidance provided to FIs to help them drive progress towards a more effective and efficient model val-idation value chain.” Mahesh Balasubramanian, Partner, and Financial Services Lead, KPMG in Bahrain.

Forward-focused FIs have already embraced the concept of MRM, and realize its critical

importance to their operations, growth and future prosperity. However, we are still witness-ing many FIs struggle to meet the complexities and challenges posed by the regulators, particu-larly in relation to the typical model approaches and the di-versity of the environments in which models are used.

MRM is still significantly un-derappreciated which has led to the risk of many FIs developing short term solutions with limit-ed strategic benefit and scope. Emerging technology and AI are taking MRM to the next level and is rapidly becoming a steady fea-ture in digital sales channels for various client and sales channel applications. However, many FIs lack even basic MRM governance exposing themselves to signif-icant operational and financial model risk. There are five leading challenges in today’s global markets that need to be considered by FIs to create an effective and sustainable MRM function:

1) MRM framework: Banks generally use models to support decision making, financial and regulatory reporting, and to provide predictive information across their business functions. As a result, they are exposed to potential risks arising from the use of models and need to establish an appropriate MRM framework with clear model definitions that better serve the industry and their asset class. 2) Model inventory and tiering: The heart of MRM is usually a model inventory, which includes all models that fulfill the regulatory guidance as well as the internal definitions of a model. Based on the implications of a model ‘going wrong,’ FIs generally categorize their models as high, medium, or low risk. Unfortunately, precisely defining what constitutes high, medium, or low risk requires conceptually is posing challenges. FIs should decide on the relevant factors to consider when tiering models, such as materiality, impact, uncertainty, regulatory implications, etc. Regulators expect transparency in the classification methodology, the use of limited subjectivity, and clear documentation of all assumptions and rationales for conclusions.3) Model lifecycle: While the inventory is a critical part of the MRM, it is also essential that the model lifecycle needs to address the different phases right from development to initial validation, approved usage, transparency, accountability and eventually its final decommission to mitigate model risk.4) Communication: Communication, both internal and external with stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle is critical to the success of the MRM, i.e., for management, validation, external communication with supervisors and regulators, etc. It is also very important to embed the model risk culture and mindset across the organization. 5) Technological environment: Recent technological advancements has aided the

MRM setup quite significantly and provides a holistic view of model risk across the organization. It may be developed internally or through the support of an external vendor or managed services in a strategic environment with consideration for flexibility and economic tactical solutions.

MRM not managed is a real threat for FIs and the impact from the risks can be far-reach-ing. With the increased scruti-ny from regulators FIs need to ensure that they maintain an effective and sustainable MRM. While governance is key, MRM standards must factor in the treatment and management of AI/ ML models into their gov-ernance.

While FIs focus on the valid-ity of their individual models, the efficacy of the controls im-plemented covering the design, development, revision, and use of models is also paramount.

Haie Lawrenz further adds that “Based on regulatory re-quirements highlighted in a cur-rent regulator’s guidance and consultations, many banks are struggling to meet their mandate and need to urgently prepare and enhance their MRM govern-ance to ensure that they are not impacted by their exposure to model risk as well as any regu-latory gaps within their models or MRM-framework.”

Additionally, MRM is an emerging risk, especially for au-dit committee members, as FIs increasingly rely on a significant number of models for business and risk management purposes.

A structured model landscape enables FIs to better understand model risk. Models are generally clustered in categories. The number of models within an institution can be from a lower two-digit number up to even >1000 models

OPEC+ agrees small oil production cut• Supply will be cut by 0.1 mln bpd from Oct

• Iran nuclear deal could boost oil supply

• Russia's gas supplies to Europe cut further

• Brent crude falls to $96 from $120 in June

Reuters | London

OPEC and its allies led by Russia yesterday agreed a small oil production cut to

bolster prices that have slid on fears of an economic slowdown.

The oil producers will reduce output by 100,000 barrels per day (bpd), amounting to only 0.1% of global demand, for Oc-tober and also agreed they could meet any time to adjust produc-tion before the next scheduled meeting on Oct. 5.

The decision essentially maintains the status quo as OPEC has been observing wild fluctuations in oil prices.

"OPEC+ is wary of protract-ed price volatility generated by weak macro sentiment, thin liquidity and renewed China lockdowns, as well as uncer-

tainty over a potential U.S.–Iran deal and efforts to create a Rus-sian oil price cap," said Matthew Holland at Energy Aspects.

Top OPEC producer Saudi Arabia last month flagged the possibility of output cuts to ad-dress what it sees as exaggerat-ed oil price declines.

Benchmark Brent crude oil has dropped to about $95 a bar-rel from $120 in June on fears of an economic slowdown and recession in the West.

It was also dragged down by a potential supply boost from Iranian crude returning to the market if Tehran is able to re-vive its 2015 nuclear deal with

global powers."The political angle, it seems,

is a Saudi message to the U.S. about the revival of the Iranian nuclear agreement ... It is hard to interpret the decision as any-thing but price supportive," said Tamas Varga of oil broker PVM.

"The cut suggests that there is a desire to defend oil prices to stay above the level of $90 per barrel," said Giovanni Staunovo at UBS.

Raad AlKadiri at Eurasia Group said: "It is a signal of in-tent ... The decision to cut rein-forces that "do not take us for granted."

Signals from the physical market, however, suggest supply remains tight and many OPEC states are producing below tar-gets while fresh Western sanc-tions are threatening Russian exports.

Russia has said it will stop supplying oil to countries that support the idea of capping the price of Russian energy sup-plies over its military conflict in Ukraine.

Russia's gas deliveries in Eu-rope, meanwhile, have been cut further, which is likely to spark more price spikes.

"An output cut won't make them any friends at a time when the world is facing a cost-of-liv-ing crisis," said Oanda analyst Craig Erlam.

The logo of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is pictured at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria

Iran is expected to add 1 million bpd to

supply, or 1% of global demand, if sanctions are eased, though the

prospects for a nuclear deal looked less clear

on Friday.

Gulf mostly subdued as Emaar hits Dubai on weak outlook

Reuters

Most Gulf stock mar-kets fell yesterday as

blue-chip Emaar Properties dragged down Dubai despite PMI pointing a solid non-oil private sector growth in UAE and Saudi Arabia in August.

Saudi Arabia's non-oil pri-vate sector expanded in Au-gust at its fastest rate since October last year, as business activity was boosted by im-proving demand conditions, a survey showed on Monday. read more

A similar survey in UAE showed non-oil private sector grew in August at its fastest pace since June 2019, boosted by better demand and lower selling prices, though senti-ment about the future slipped to a 17-month low.

Saudi Arabia's benchmark index (.TASI) fell 0.3%, with Al Rajhi Bank (1120.SE) easing 0.6% and Saudi National Bank (1180.SE) decreasing 1%.

In Dubai, the main share in-dex (.DFMGI) tumbled 1.3%, extending the losses for four straight session. Developer Emaar Properties (EMAR.DU) dropped 3.3%, its biggest fall

in two month, while Emirates NBD Bank (ENBD.DU) slid 0.8%.

A Reuters poll of property market analysts showed prop-erty prices in Dubai will rise this year and next at a slower pace than previously thought as higher mortgage rates and the cost of living crisis will reduce foreign demand.

Most of the analysts said the recovery was fragile and une-ven, and an oversupply of res-idential properties along with rising interest rates would pressure prices over the com-ing months.

Abu Dhabi's index .However, Alpha Dhabi

Holding (ALPHADHABI.AD) gained 1.1% after its unit Pure Health signed an agreement to acquire a minority equity investment in Ardent Health Services, a leading U.S. health-care provider, for a total in-vestment of AED 1.8 billion.

In Qatar, the benchmark (.QSI) also slipped 0.5%, ex-tending the losses for sixth consecutive sessions, as fi-nancial and industrial stocks moved sideways. Gulf's largest lender Qatar National Bank (QNBK.QA) shed 1.3% but In-dustries Qatar (IQCD.QA) was up 1.2%.

News in brief u Israeli investigations into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May concluded that she was likely to have been unintentionally shot by an Israeli soldier but was not deliberately targeted, the military said yesterday. Abu Akleh, a U.S.-Palestinian citizen, was shot dead on May 11 while covering an Israeli military operation in the volatile town of Jenin in the occupied West Bank in circumstances that remain heavily disputed. The Israeli military says that troops conducting operations in Jenin had come under heavy fire from all sides and had fired back, including towards the area where Abu Akleh was standing about 200 metres from their position, but that they had not been able to identify her as a journalist. It said “there is a high possibility that Ms. Abu Akleh was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire that was fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen”. It said it was also possible that she was hit by Palestinian gunmen.

u Iran is seeking the closure of the UN nuclear agency’s investigation of its nuclear activities among other guarantees, in order to revive the country’s

2015 nuclear deal with world powers, a senior Iranian official said yesterday. “An end to the agency’s probes is part of the guarantees that we are seeking to have a sustainable and durable nuclear agreement,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told a televised

news conference. Last week, Iran sent its latest response to an EU-drafted text aimed at overcoming an impasse to revive the nuclear pact, under which it had restrained its nuclear program in exchange for relief from US, EU and UN economic sanctions.

u A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck southern Iran on Monday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), EMSC said. Iranian state TV said rescue teams had been sent to the area but there were no immediate reports of fatalities or damage. Major geological fault lines crisscross Iran, which has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.

u A prominent German businessman was aboard the private jet that crashed into the Baltic Sea off Latvia after flying half way across Europe from Spain without responding to controllers’ calls, his company, Quick Air, said yesterday. The jet, an Austria-registered Cessna 551, left Jerez in southern Spain on Sunday afternoon, turning at Paris and Cologne before flying straight out to the Baltic Sea, where it spiralled into the water off the Latvian coast, flight tracking data showed. “I can confirm that it was the private jet of our owner, Karl-Peter Griesemann,” said a spokesperson for Quick Air, an air charter company based in Cologne. Griesemann and three others were on board the plane, the

spokesperson added. Cologne newspaper Express reported that Griesemann was the pilot and that he was accompanied by his wife, daughter and his daughter’s boyfriend. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Spain’s air traffic control service ENAIRE said it lost contact with the aircraft in airspace

above Toledo at 1455 local time (1255 GMT), an hour after it took off.

Liz Truss will become Brit-ain's next prime minister after winning a leadership

race for the governing Conserv-ative party yesterday, vowing to press ahead with promises of tax cuts and to deal with a growing energy crisis.

After weeks of an often bad-tempered and divisive lead-ership contest, Truss, currently the foreign minister, defeated for-mer finance minister Rishi Sunak in a vote of Conservative Party members, winning by 81,326 votes to 60,399.

"I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy,"

Truss said after the result was announced. "I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with peo-ple's energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply."

Truss takes over as the coun-try faces a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest, a recession and war in Europe, where Britain has been a leading backer of Ukraine. She appeared to rule out another national election for the next two years, saying she would win a great victory for her party in 2024.

She succeeds Boris Johnson, who was forced to announce his resignation in July after months of scandal saw support for his

administration drain away.He will travel to Scotland to

meet Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday to officially tender his resigna-tion. Truss will follow him and be asked to form a government by the monarch.

Long the front-runner to re-place him, Truss will become the Conservatives' fourth prime minister since a 2015 election. Over that period the country has been buffeted from crisis to crisis, and now faces what is forecast to be a long recession triggered by sky-rocketing inflation which hit 10.1% in July.

Foreign minister under John-son, Truss, 47, has promised to act quickly to tackle the cost of living crisis, saying that within a week she will come up with a plan to tackle rising energy bills and securing future fuel supplies.

She signalled during her lead-ership campaign she would chal-

lenge convention by scrapping tax increases and cutting other levies in a move some economists say would fuel inflation.

That, plus a pledge to review the remit of the Bank of England while protecting its independ-ence, has prompted some inves-tors to dump the pound and gov-ernment bonds.

Kwasi Kwarteng, widely tipped to be her finance minister, sought to calm markets on Monday, by saying in an article in the Financial Times news-paper that under Truss there would need to be "some fiscal loosening" but that her administra-tion would act in "a fiscally responsible way".

Asked if he would be finance minister following Truss's vic-tory, Kwarteng told Reuters he didn't know.

russ faces a long, costly and difficult to-do list, which op-position lawmakers say is the result of 12 years of poor Con-servative government. Several have called for an early election - something Truss has said she will not allow.

Veteran Conservative lawmaker David Davis de-scribed the challenges she would take on as prime min-ister as "probably the sec-ond most difficult brief of

post-war prime ministers" after Conservative Margaret Thatcher in 1979.

"I actually don't think any of the candidates, not one of them going through it, really knows quite how big this is going to be," he said, adding that costs could run into tens of billions of pounds.

Truss has said she will appoint a strong cabinet, dispensing with what one source close to her called a "presidential-style" of governing, and she will have to

work hard to win over some lawmakers in her party who had backed Sunak in the race.

Her victory among party members was also the

narrowest of any Con-servative leadership election held this century.

The Institute for Government think-tank said Truss would have a weak-er starting point than any of her predecessors, be-cause she was not the most popular choice among her

party's lawmakers.First, she will turn

to the urgent issue of surging energy prices. Average annual house-hold utility bills are set to jump by 80% in Oc-tober to 3,549 pounds, before an expected rise to 6,000 pounds in 2023, decimating personal finances.

Earthquake in China’s Sichuan kills 46, shakes provincial capitalReuters | Beijing

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck China’s Sichuan

province yesterday, the strong-est to hit the region since 2017, killing at least 46 people and shaking the provincial capital of Chengdu and more distant provinces.

Some roads and homes near the epicentre were damaged by landslides, while communica-tions were down in at least one area, state television reported.

No damage to dams and hy-dropower stations within 50 km (31 miles) of the epicentre

was reported, although dam-age to the provincial grid had affected power to about 40,000 end-users.

The epicentre was at the town of Luding, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said, in the mountains about 226 km southwest of

Chengdu. In Luding, the quake was so

strong it was hard for some peo-ple to remain standing, while cracks appeared on some hous-es, the China News Service re-ported. Video clips on social media showed lights swing-ing while people rushed out of

buildings into the streets.Four of the seven people

killed were in Luding.A total of 39,000 people live

within 20 km of the epicentre and 1.55 million within 100 km, according to state

television.The quake was Sichuan’s big-

gest since August 2017, when one of magnitude 7.0 hit the Aba prefecture.

The most powerful Sichuan earthquake on record was in May 2008, when a magnitude 8.0 quake centred in Wenchuan killed almost 70,000 people and caused extensive damage.

Police hunt two men after knife rampage kills 10 in CanadaReuters | Weldon, Saskatche-wan

Two men suspected of kill-ing 10 people in a stabbing

rampage that devastated an in-digenous community in Canada were still at large on Monday as police tried to determine a motive for attacks that shocked a nation where mass violence is rare.

Police launched a manhunt for Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30, after they allegedly stabbed people in 13 different areas across an indigenous com-munity and its surrounding province on Sunday. At least 15 others were wounded.

The attacks in Saskatche-wan province were among the deadliest in Canada's modern history. A statement by indig-enous leaders indicated they may have been drug-related. Police said some of the victims appeared to have been targeted, while others were apparently random.

Police have provided photos of the two men, who they say are armed and dangerous. They were traveling in a black Nissan Rogue and spotted in the city of Regina, about 320 km (200 miles) south of the attacks in the James Smith Cree Nation and the village of Weldon, po-lice said.

The suspects were likely in Regina, the city's police chief, Evan Bray, said in a Twitter video late on Sunday. But au-thorities have warned it was not clear where they might be headed or if they had changed vehicles.

Indigenous people account for less than 5% of Canada's population of about 38 million and suffer from higher levels of poverty and unemployment than other Canadians and also have a shorter life expectancy.

P r i m e M i n i s t e r Ju s t i n Trudeau said his government had been in direct communica-tion with the James Smith Cree

Nation leadership, adding, "we are ready to assist in any way we can."

James Smith Cree Nation is an indigenous communi-ty with a population of about 3,400 people largely engaged in farming, hunting and fishing. Weldon is a village of some 200 people.

The nation's elected elders declared a state of emergency. Police bulletins urged people to report any suspicious per-sons and to take precautions including sheltering in place, while warning against picking up hitchhikers or approaching suspicious people.

"Do not leave a secure loca-tion. Use caution allowing oth-ers into your residence," one advisory said.

Sri Lanka bill to trim president’s powers likely to become law within weeks-ministerReuters | Colombo

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said yesterday a

constitutional amendment bill trimming presidential powers is expected to become law in a couple of weeks.

“The new amendment will reduce presidential powers and bring back participatory gov-

ernance,” Sabry told reporters at the foreign ministry.

The bill, which will require a

two-thirds majority in the house to become law, was proposed to help shore up stability and defuse unrest provoked by the country’s worst financial crisis in decades.

The crisis came to a head in July when then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was accused of economic misman-agement, fled the country and

resigned, replaced by Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The proposed amendment would establish a constitution-al council and nine independ-ent commissions to improve governance. The commissions would work to promote human rights, increase audit oversight of government agencies and bol-ster anti-graft investigations.

Ukraine made its bold-est claim yet of suc-

cess on the battlefield in its week-old counter-offensive against Russian forces in the south, while European markets reopened on Mon-day in free-fall after Russia kept its main gas pipeline to Germany shut.

After days of declining to give details about their new offensive, Ukrainian offi-cials posted an image online of three soldiers raising a flag over a town in Kherson province, a southern region occupied by Russia since the war's early days.

The image of the flag be-ing fixed to a pole on a roof-top, purportedly in Vysoko-pyllya in the north of Kher-son, was released as Presi-dent Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that Ukrainian forces had captured two towns in the south and one in the east. In an overnight address, he did not identify the locations.

After months of endur-ing punishing Russian ar-tillery assaults in the east, Ukraine has at last begun its long-awaited coun-ter-attack, its biggest since it drove Russian forces away from the outskirts of Kyiv in March.

Ukraine had kept most details of its new campaign under wraps so far, banning journalists from the front-line and offering little com-mentary in public.

Attacker Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was shot dead by police on the spot after causing dev-astation and chaos on a stretch of about two km (1.2 miles) on Nice's seaside boulevard, where families were celebrating Bas-tille Day.

Prosecutors say the defend-ants, who face between five years in jail to a life sentence, helped Tunisian-born Lahouaiej Bouhlel get weapons, rent the truck or survey the route he took for the attack.

"It's a difficult moment, it's very complicated," Anne Mur-

ris, who lost her daughter in the attack, said as she arrived at the court. "This sends me back six years ago, when I was look-ing for my daughter (after the attack)... a lot of sadness, also feelings of fear."

None of the defendants is ac-cused of taking part in the at-tack or even of being complicit, which survivors said they strug-gled with.

The lack of high-profile de-fendants, together with the fact that there are question marks over the attacker's motives, mean the Nice trial is quite dif-ferent from the past months' trial into the Islamist attacks that killed 130 in Paris in 2015.

Islamic State claimed respon-sibility a few days after the Nice massacre, but offered no proof that the attacker, who had a re-cord of domestic violence and petty crimes, had direct contact with the group.

ROAD RAGE

Described by neighbours as a “frightening” man with

a tense personality, Lahouaiej Bouhlel had months before his rampage been handed a six-month suspended sentence for hurling a wooden pallet at another driver in a road rage incident.

French media including Le Monde and Liberation this week reported accounts by his wife of severe domestic vi-olence by a husband who beat her, raped her and threatened to kill her and their children if she left him.

Lahouaiej Bouhlel drank

alcohol, ate pork and showed no interest in religion, they quoted his wife as telling in-vestigators after the attack. He started looking up Islamist content online weeks before the attack, Le Monde wrote.

Three of the accused, close friends of the attacker, are ac-cused of participation in a ter-rorist criminal association for helping him obtain weapons and the truck. Two of those face 20 years in jail, while one faces a life sentence.

The five other defendants are accused of helping indi-rectly through arms trafficking and face shorter sentences. One of that group will be tried

in absentia.“Some people are hoping

the trial will help them move forward,” said Jean-Claude Hubler, who chairs the Life for Nice victims’ association.

“Some are so angry that for them the trial will not lead to anything significant - we know that the terrorist is dead.”

Hubler said he and a num-ber of other victims were more interested in seeing whether officials will, separately from this trial, face sanctions for what he said was a lack of se-curity to protect the Bastille Day celebrations.

The trial verdict is expected in December.

French gendarmes stand in front of the temporary courtroom before the start of the trial of eight individuals for their role in the July 14, 2016 attacks on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice in which 86 people died when a truck was driven into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day, at the Paris courthouse on the Ile de la Cite, in Paris, France

There are serious doubts over whether this was an opportunistic

claim of responsibility, and the prosecutors’ office said that

was one of the points the trial would aim to clarify. They could not say whether the defendants would plead guilty or deny any

wrongdoing.

Bangladesh will not face a situation like Sri Lanka, PM Hasina saysReuters | New Delhi

Bangladesh Prime Min-ister Sheikh Hasina has

said her country will not face a situation like the eco-nomic crisis in Sri Lanka although her government has sought loans from glob-al agencies amid a fall in its reserves and surging import costs. read more

In an interview with Reuters partner ANI, aired ahead of her visit to India on Monday, Hasina said that Bangladesh’s economy re-mained strong despite the impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Bangladesh’s $416 billion economy has been one of the fastest-growing in the world for years but dwindling for-eign exchange reserves due to inflated import bills have prompted the government to seek loans from global agencies, including the In-ternational Monetary Fund (IMF). read more

“Bangladesh has always timely (in paying) our debt; our debt rate is very low in the context of Sri Lanka,” Hasina said. “Some people have raised this issue that Bangladesh will be Sri Lan-ka, but I can ensure that that will not happen.”

Iran sentences two women to death for 'corruption on earth' - IRNAReuters | Dubai

Two women have been sen-tenced to death in Iran

on charges of "corruption on earth" and human trafficking over the last few days, Iran's official IRNA news agency re-ported yesterday.

"Contrary to news published

online, the sentenced have de-ceived and trafficked young women and girls out of the country by promising them ed-ucational and work opportuni-ties, thus leading to the suicide of several of their victims," IRNA said.

" C o r r u p t i o n o n e a r t h " is a term Iranian authori-

ties use to refer to a broad range of offences, includ-ing those related to Islamic morals.

In March, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khame-nei described homosexuality as part of a "moral deprivation" widespread in Western civili-sation.

India's Bengaluru hit by flooding, traffic snarls after heavy rainReuters | Bengaluru

Large parts of India's tech capital Bengaluru were un-

der water yesterday after tor-rential rains uprooted trees, caused crippling traffic and forced offices to issue work-from-home orders to employ-ees, raising fears of further dis-ruptions through the week.

The Bangalore Urban district on Sunday received 28.1 mm

rainfall, 368% more than the average, according to data com-

piled by the state-run India Me-teorological Department (IMD).

Two Russian embassy staff dead, four others killed in suicide blast in Kabul• Police said the attacker was shot dead by armed guards

• Russia is one of the few countries to have maintained an embassy in Kabul after the Taliban took over the country

Reuters | Kabul

Two Russian embassy staff in Kabul were among six people killed when a su-

icide bomber detonated explo-sives near the entrance of the embassy, in a blast that injured at least 10 others, the Russian Foreign Ministry and Afghan officials said yesterday.

Police said the attacker was shot dead by armed guards as he approached the gate, in one of the first such attacks since the Taliban took power last year.

“The suicide attacker before reaching the target, was recog-nised and shot by Russian em-

bassy (Taliban) guards ... there is no information about casualties yet,” Mawlawi Sabir, the head of the police district where the attack took place, told Reuters.

The Russian Foreign Minis-

try said in a statement that an unknown militant set off an ex-plosive device near the entrance to the consular section of the embassy around at 10:50 a.m. Kabul time.

“As a result of the attack, two employees of the diplomatic mission were killed, and there are also victims among Afghan citizens,” the ministry said.

The four others killed were

Afghan civilians, Khalid Zadran, a Kabul police spokesman said.

Russia is one of the few coun-tries to have maintained an em-bassy in Kabul after the Taliban took over the country more than a year ago. Although Moscow does not officially recognise the Taliban’s government, they have been in talks with officials over an agreement to supply gasoline and other commodities.

The United Nations’ mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) con-demned the blast.

“In light of recent events, UN-AMA stresses the need for the de facto authorities to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the people as well as diplomatic missions,” the UN wrote on Twit-

ter, in reference to the Taliban government.

During the decades-long Tali-ban insurgency against the west-ern-backed Afghan government, bombings targeting foreign mis-sions were a regular occurrence in Kabul, especially in recent years, with embassies and hotels fortifying themselves with razor wire and blast walls.

Such incidents have decreased dramatically since the insurgent group swept to power in August 2021.

Since then, attacks - some of them claimed by Islamic State - mainly targeted the Taliban and civilian targets such as mosques.

No group has claimed respon-sibility for Monday’s blast.

Ukraine nuclear plant disconnected by shelling after UN watchdog exits-EnergoatomReuters | Kyiv

The final working reactor at the vast Zaporizhzhia nucle-

ar power plant was disconnected from Ukraine’s grid on Monday after Russian shelling disrupted power lines, state nuclear com-pany Energoatom said. The imperilled six-reactor facil-ity in southern Ukraine, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, was captured by Mos-cow in March, but is still run by Ukrainian staff.“Today, as a result of a fire caused by shelling, the (last working)

transmission line was discon-nected,” Energoatom said in a statement on Telegram.“As a result, (reactor) unit No. 6, which currently supplies the (plant’s) own needs, was unload-ed and disconnected from the grid,” it said.Ukraine was unable to repair the power lines now because of fighting raging around the sta-tion, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko wrote on Facebook.“Any repairs of the power lines are currently impossible- fight-ing is ongoing around the sta-

tion,” he said.Galushchenko complained that the fresh shelling had hit soon after most of the inspectors from a mission by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the Interna-tional Atomic Energy Agency, left the plant earlier on Monday.“As soon as the IAEA mission left the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant- the station has once again been disconnected,” he added.Kyiv and Moscow have blamed each other of risking a nuclear disaster as the plant’s territory has been regularly shelled over the past month.

Kanye West lashes out at ‘crazy’ peopleCelebretainment | Los Angeles

Kanye West has lashed out at “crazy” people who don’t understand

him.The 45-year-old shared the

message on Instagram, insist-ing he “won’t back down” from his strong opinions on his chil-dren’s schooling or his busi-nesses, just days after he posted and deleted a string of messages about his former wife Kim Kar-dashian and her family.

Kanye wrote: “Here is the through line. Gap having meet-ings about me without me Adi-das releasing old shoes and col-oring my shoes like I’m dead me not having a say on where my children go to school.

“Call me whatever names you want. If you don’t understand why I won’t back down on my businesses my brands and my children then you’re the ones who are crazy.”

The message came after Kanye posted a series of mes-sages online which appeared to be part of a disagreement with Kim over where to send their four children - North, nine, Chi-cago, four, Saint, six, and Psalm, three - to school with Kanye suggesting he wanted the kids to attend the institution he founded, the Donda Academy.

In one of the notes posted online, Kanye wrote: “It’s not up to Calabasas or Hulu where my kids go to school I’m not the crazy one here It’s up. I won’t

stop until I have a say so on my kids no matter what it legally takes.”

Another post referred to Tristan Thompson, Scott Dis ick , and Travis Scott - who have al l children w i t h K a r -d a s h i -a n ’ s s i s t e r s - a n d compared t h e m t o sperm “do -nors”.

The star added: “We’re in this to-gether.”

Tristan has two kids with Khloe Kardashian, while Scott has three children with K o u r t n e y , and Travis is dad to a son and daugh-ter with Ky-lie Jenner.

K a n y e also shared a s c r e e n shot which a p p e a r e d to show an exchange be-tween him and his ex Kim, with the reality TV star

writing: “Can u please stop (sic)” and Kanye replied: “No ... We need to talk in person. You don’t have say so of where the

Kanye responded: “Y’all don’t have so so

over my black chi ldren and where they go to school.”

In anoth-er message, Kanye seem-ingly refer-enced Kim’s i n f a m o u s sex tape and a shoot she did for Play-boy as well as another shoot for the maga-zine by her sister Kylie.

Lisa Kudrow branded ‘one of worst humans’ on Earth by Spencer Pratt

Celebretainment | Los Angeles

Lisa Kudrow has been branded “one of the

worst humans” on Earth by ‘The Hills’ star Spencer Pratt.

The 39-year-old slated the ‘Friends’ actress, 59, on TikTok, with TV personal-ity Bethenny Frankel, 51, also commenting she had a “crazy experience” with Lisa when she appeared on her talk show.

Spencer initially slammed Lisa last week, and then took to the social platform again on Saturday to explain his remark.

The dad-of-one alleged Lisa approached him and his wife Heidi Montag, 35, at a party in 2009, where he said the actress claimed he had the “eyes of a serial killer” and would murder his partner.

He said: “It was almost like we were filming for ‘Punk’d’ and a camera was going to pop up, but Heidi and I didn’t care as there was delicious food and a open bar.

“As we were sitting there consuming a little caviar, Phoe-be (Lisa) approach-es, which was a little shocking as no-one had spoken to us at all at the par-ty.

“ R i g h t i n front of me she tells Heidi that she needs to get away from me as fast as possi-ble because I’m going to murder Hei-di and that I have the eyes of a serial killer.

A source told PageSix: “It was a real family getaway and they are considering getting back together. She would like her daughter to have a sibling. They both [Bradley and Irina] haven’t gotten serious with anyone else and they are both into the idea of having a kid.”

However, the news comes just days after it was claimed that the ‘Licorice Pizza’ star

A source said: “They are co-parenting and get along well for the sake of their daughter. They do things as a family and it’s going well. They have a good system in place for Lea and they take turns with her. They also come together as a family and do things when they can.”

Last year, Irina was roman-tically linked to rap star Kanye West after his divorce from Kim Kardashian.

Irina and Kanye, 45, were seen together on a romantic trip to France, but their spark ultimately fizzled out.

A source said at the time: “It was never a serious thing that took off.”

Another source revealed that Kanye was wowed by the model. However, the

Hamilton apologises to team for angry radio outburstReuters | Zandvoort

Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton apologised

for an expletive-laden radio outburst at his Mercedes team as his hopes of a first win of the Formula One season dis-appeared in Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.

The Briton led until a late safety car period left him de-fending on slower tyres than his rivals, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen roaring past at the re-start to take a home victory.

Hamilton ended up fourth, with team mate George Russell second.

“I was just on the edge of breaking point with emotions and my apologies to the team because I don’t even remem-ber what I said, I just lost it for a second,” he told Sky Sports television.

“But I think they know that there is just so much passion and I want to look at it as a glass half full,” added the winner of 103 races.

Hamilton has won a race in every season he has competed since his debut in 2007, but that record is in danger of ending with Verstappen taking his 10th win in 15 races and romping towards his second title.

The disappointment was so much greater because Mercedes sensed that Zand-voort offered a real opportunity, even if Verstappen had started

on pole in front of his home crowd.

“I really was hopeful that we were going to get a one-two together as a team,” said Ham-ilton, who has not won since Saudi Arabia last December.

MNM trio will need to accept sitting on the bench, says PSG coachReuters | Paris

Paris St Germain will need all their resources if they are to

shine on all fronts this season, and it means that their formi-dable ‘MNM’ attacking trio will need to take a break at times, whether they like it or not.

While Mauricio Pochettino would rarely replace Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe or Ney-mar, his successor Christophe Galtier has not hesitated to put the Brazilian on the bench on Saturday, three days before their Champions League open-er against Juventus.

Neymar came on around the hour mark but it was Mbappe who made way for his fellow forward in their 3-0 win at Nantes and the France player did not show any sign of frus-tration.

Messi is the one who played the most among the three, al-though he was also recalled to the bench in the closing stages against Monaco and Toulouse.

Galtier, who took over this season, had warned that the team would come first, and he has been true to his word as PSG scored a record 24 goals in their opening six league matches.

“I talked about it twice - once with each of them and once with the whole squad, to tell them that this is how it was going to be and that we had to have the right attitude and accept it,” said Galtier.

With a packed schedule with

the World Cup looming in the European autumn, Galtier said there was little choice.

“You say it’s new, but it’s an

obligation for everyone because of the very busy schedule,” he explained.

“We play a lot, every three days, then every four days, then there is the World Cup. Everyone has to understand that they won’t be able to play all the games.”

Title holders outclass Bahrain Club while Samaheej surge late in win against Tubli on opening night of 2022/2023 Khalid bin Hamad Bahrain Handball League

• Al Najma finish strong in resounding win against Bahrain Club

• Samaheej use decisive 11-0 run to seal victory against Tubli

TDT | Manama

Al Najma and Samaheej were both victorious last night in the open-

ing evening of action in the 2022/2023 Khalid bin Hamad Bahrain Handball League, being played at the Bahrain Handball Association (BHA) Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Defending champions Najma battled past a hard-challenging Bahrain Club 33-25, while Sama-heej posted an emphatic come-from-behind 29-23 win against Tubli in their contest.

In Najma’s win, they held a slim 16-12 advantage heading into the locker rooms and then Bahrain Club kept things close early in the second half.

But Najma gradually began to pull away and a Mohammed Habib goal gave them a 23-20 lead. They continued to extend

the gap to 26-22 moving into the final 10 minutes. Back-to-back goals from Habib and Bilal Basham made it 31-23, and they then rode their momentum to the final whistle.

Najma’s triumph last night continued from where they left off last week, when they claimed the Bahrain Super Cup —the tradit ional sea-son-opening fixture in the na-tional handball scene—with a 31-24 triumph over arch-rivals Al Ahli.

Najma are looking to build on

their monumental success from last season, when they won the league title, the BHA Cup and the Gulf clubs handball champi-onship, while also claiming the

silver medals in the Asian clubs championship.

Meanwhile, Samaheej used a blistering 11-0 run midway through the second half to turn a narrow deficit into a command-ing lead, and they never looked back.

The game was deadlocked at 13-all at the end of the first half, and then Tubli went ahead 19-16 eight minutes after the break.

But then Samaheej stepped things up and scored the match’s next 11 goals to power to a 27-

19 advantage. That completely changed the face of the contest, as Samaheej held Tubli scoreless for nearly 20 minutes.

Samaheej cruised from there as they sealed a well-deserved season-opening win.

The first week of league action continues tonight and tomor-row. This evening, Al Shabab take on Al Tadhamon at 5.30pm, to be followed at 7.15pm by an exciting clash between Al Ahli and Barbar.

Tomorrow, Al Ettihad take on Al Ettifaq at 7pm.

Binotto and Sainz lament Ferrari’s Dutch ‘mess’

AFP | Zandvoort

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto and one of his

drivers Carlos Sainz agreed their disastrous Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday was “a mess”.

In a chaotic and busy race, punctuated by stoppages, Red Bull emerged trium-phant as Max Verstappen drove to his fourth con-secutive victory ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Le-clerc.

Ferrari’s race was filled with series of errors and misfortunes including bun-gled pit-stops, unsafe re-leases in the pit lane and erratic strategy calls.

A poor first pit stop left Sainz standing for 12 sec-onds as his crew searched for a left rear tyre.

“Oh my God!” exclaimed Sainz.

Not only had his crew mislaid a tyre, but they also left a wheel gun on the ground in front of Sergio Perez of Red Bull.

“A mess,” said Binotto. “What happened: a mess. A very, very late call. The mechanics weren’t ready. We will revisit that at the end of this race.

“It was finally there, within our grasp but of course then the safety car really didn’t help.

Kyrgios stuns Medvedev at US Open, Gauff advancesNick Kyrgios dethrones Daniil Medvedev; sets up quarter-final clash with Karen Khachanov

• Coco Gauff races into quarters with win over Zhang Shuai

AFP | New York

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios sent defending cham-pion Daniil Medvedev

tumbling out of the US Open on Sunday as US teenager Coco Gauff reached the quarter-finals for the first time.

The notoriously temper-amental 23rd-seeded Kyrgios produced some scintillating shot-making on his way to a su-perb 7-6 (13/11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over the world number one from Russia.

Kyrgios, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the Wimble-don final in July, showed grit and composure to save three set points in the opening set be-fore holding his nerve to win an epic tie-break 13/11 before a raucous Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.

Although Kyrgios dropped the second set, he roared back to dominate Medvedev in the third and fourth sets to clinch victory in 2hr 53min.

“It was an amazing match, ob-viously Daniil as the defending champion had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but I’ve been playing amazing the last couple of months,” Kyrgios said after the win.

“What a place to do it -- packed house in New York. I’m extremely blessed.”

Medvedev meanwhile said the mercurial Kyrgios had elevat-

ed his play to the same level as great such as Rafael Nadal and Djokovic.

“Nick today played kind of at the level of Novak and Rafa,” said the 26-year-old after seeing 21 aces and 53 winners whizz past him.

“If he plays like this until the end of the tournament, he has all the chances to win it.”

Kyrgios will face Karen Khachanov in the quarter-fi-nals on Tuesday. Khachanov equalled his best performance in a Grand Slam event by de-feating Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a 3hr 21min five-set thriller.

The 27th-seeded Khachanov dug deep to down Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on the Lou-is Armstrong Stadium.

Elsewhere in the fourth round

on Sunday, fifth seed Casper Ruud became the first Norwe-gian man to reach the US Open quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2 victory over French lucky loser Corentin Moutet.

The 23-year-old Ruud, seed-ed fifth, will face Italy’s Mat-teo Berrettini for a place in the semi-finals.

Berrettini extended his im-pressive run of recent Grand Slam singles performances with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 de-feat of Spain’s Alejandro Dav-idovich Fokina.

The 26-year-old from Rome missed Wimbledon earlier this year after testing positive for Covid-19, and was injured for the French Open.

But Berrettini has now made the quarter-finals or better in the last five Grand Slams he has

played in after Sunday’s win.“It’s not a secret for me the

Slams are the goal of the season,” he said.

“I think it proves that my level is high in Slams ... I play my best tennis in the most important stages of the tour.”

Gauff marches on In the women’s draw mean-

while, rising American star Gauff kept home hopes alive with a battling 7-5, 7-5 win over China’s Zhang Shuai on the Ar-thur Ashe Stadium.

The 18-year-old 12th seed will now play France’s in-form Car-oline Garcia for a place in the semi-finals.

Garcia, the world number 17, has emerged as a dark horse in New York despite a modest re-cord in Grand Slams.

The 28-year-old reached her only other Grand Slam last-eight on home ground at Roland Gar-ros five years ago.

But she arrived in New York

brimming with confidence after claiming the Cincinnati Masters lead-in event, and so far at the Open has yet to drop a set.

Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic followed up her victory over Serena Williams with anoth-er battling display to reach the quarter-finals.

Tomljanovic -- who knocked out tennis icon Williams in the third round on Friday -- ad-vanced to the last eight with a 7-6 (10/8), 6-1 victory over Rus-sia’s Liudmila Samsonova.

“The fact that I won, I’m still a little speechless,” Tomljanovic said after her win.

The 29-year-old world num-ber 46 will play Tunisia’s fifth-seed Ons Jabeur in the quarters.

Jabeur, who became the first African woman to reach the final at Wimbledon in July, secured the first US Open quarter-final appearance of her career with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 win over Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova.

Djokovic to skip Serbia’s Davis Cup group stage ties for personal reasons

Reuters | London

Novak Djokovic will miss Serbia’s Davis Cup Fi-

nals group stage matches starting in Valencia next week due to personal rea-sons, the country’s tennis federation announced yes-terday.

The former world num-ber one won Wimbledon to take his Grand Slam singles titles tally to 21 but missed the ongoing US Open as he opted not to be vaccinat-ed against COVID-19, which meant he could not fly to New York for the year’s final major.

Djokovic, 35, was expect-ed to return to action in the men’s premier team event but Serbian captain Viktor Troicki said in a statement posted on the Teniski Savez Srbije website that the play-er had cancelled his partic-ipation.

Reuters has reached out to Djokovic’s team seeking comment.

Djokovic’s official website lists the Sept. 23-25 Laver Cup at London’s O2 Arena as his next tournament, fol-lowed by an ATP 250 event in Tel Aviv and the Paris Masters in late October.

Serbia have been drawn in Group B alongside Spain, South Korea and Canada.

Two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarter-finals of this year’s event with the knock-out stages to be held in No-vember in Malaga.

Mansoor ready for tense climax to world title race

• Team Abu Dhabi star says he can handle pressure in decisive Portuguese double header

TDT | Manama

Team Abu Dhabi’s Mansoor Al Mansoori says he is ready

to handle the pressure as he bids to secure the 2022 UIM F2 World Championship in a tense finale to the season over the next two weekends in Portugal.

His first F2 Grand Prix vic-tory in Lithuania last month has given the Emirati driver a three-point championship lead over Germany’ Stefan Hagin to take into Sunday’s penultimate round in Ribadouro.

With the final Grand Prix of the campaign to follow a week later and 270km away in Vila Velha de Ródão, Al Mansoori is determined to follow team-mate and three-times world champion Rashed Al Qemzi to the F2 crown.

“I’m not surprised to be lead-ing because, from the start of the season, I was aiming to put my-

self in a good position,” he said. “Competing alongside Rashed

has given me a lot of extra con-fidence, and this helped me to take the lead in the champion-ship with my first win in Lith-uania.”

Al Mansoori paid tribute to Italian powerboat racing leg-end, Guido Cappellini, who has delivered 14 world titles to the UAE capital since taking over as Team Abu Dhabi manager in February 2015.

“We all owe so much to Guido for the success the team has en-joyed since he took charge,” he

said. “He has built a great team spirit, and used his experience to take us to the top.

“The most important thing I’ve learnt from him is to focus, and keep calm always. Before the last round, his advice about how to deal with the pressure from the boats behind was so important.”

“It wasn’t easy to hold my lead for 45 laps. But that was great experience, and now I want an-other strong finish on Sunday to take me into the last round.”

Back to back victories at the same two Portuguese venues

12 months ago secured a third F2 world championship for Al Qemzi, who could yet land an overall F2 podium place.

“I want to have a strong finish to the season,” he said. “There are still 40 points to be won, and I can still finish in a good position in the championship.

“I like the conditions and the atmosphere and always enjoy racing in Portugal, so I have a good feeling going back to there and I want to win again. But I also want to help my team mate as much as I can.”

TDT | Manama

Bahraini clubs Riffa and East Riffa are set for an exciting clash this evening

in the Zonal Semi-finals of the AFC Cup 2022.

The match is scheduled for an 8pm kick-off and it will be played at the Shaikh Ali bin Mo-hammed Al Khalifa Stadium at Muharraq Club in Arad.

The Riffa derby marks the first time that two sides from the Kingdom will be facing off in

the competition’s history. The winners of the sin-

gle-game affair will move on to the West Asian Zonal final, where they will face the win-ners of the other semis contest between Al Arabi of Kuwait and Al Seeb of Oman. That contest was played late last night in Ku-wait City.

Both teams have a wealth of

talent, spearheaded by their Bahrain international stars. For Riffa, they will rely heavily on the likes of Mohammed Jassim Marhoon, Komail Al Aswad, Sayed Mahdi Baqer, Mohammed Al Rumaihi and Sayed Hashem Isa, to name a few; while for East Riffa, set to lead the charge are Sami Al Hussaini, Mohammed Duaij, Jasim Khelaif, Abdulla Shallal and Faisal Budahoom,

amongst others.Leading up to the crucial

match, officials from both clubs participated in the offi-cial technical meeting hosted by the Asian Football Confed-eration (AFC). The colours of both teams’ uniforms for this evening’s encounter were pre-sented during the proceedings.

The Riffa players and coach-ing staff welcomed to their train-ing session the club’s chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa and other high-ranking officials.

Riffa head coach Ali Ashoor briefed Shaikh Abdulla on his squad’s preparations for to-night’s highly anticipated game.

Meanwhile, East Riffa had also stepped up their preparations over the last few days under head coach Florin Motroc from Romania. Motroc only recently returned to his post at the helm of the team, after former man-ager Ghassan Maatouk suddenly left the club.

The winners of the West Asian Zonal final will then march through to the AFC Cup 2022 final, where they will face the winners of the Inter-Zone Play-off final. There are currently four teams still vying for that spot, including Sogdiana Jiz-zakh of Uzbekistan, Eastern of Hong Kong, ATK Mohun Bagan of India and Kuala Lumpur City of Malaysia.

Riffa qualified for the Zonal Semi-finals after finishing as the best runners-up from the group stage, while East Riffa made it through after topping Group C.

This year is the first time that two teams from Bahrain have advanced past the group stage since 2014, when Riffa and Al Hidd competed in the Round of 16.
