A highlight of 2017 was the establishment of the James E. Mantyla Benevolent Care Fund made possible by the very generous Planned Giving of the late James E. Mantyla of Glenwood Beer.

Profit margins for long term care facilities are greatly affected by underfunding by governmental programs. It is generous individuals like Jim, and those before him, who have supported Saint Mary’s and made a difference in our Resident’s lives. Won’t you join them in 2018!

Saint Mary’s Home of Erie earns exclusive Quality Accreditation

Saint Mary’s East and Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge have each received Providigm’s Advanced Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Accreditation for 2017 as a skilled nursing facility actively performing Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities. Less than 2% of the skilled nursing facilities in the country have achieved this advanced level of QAPI accreditation.

Presented by independent accreditor, Providigm, LLC, the Advanced QAPI Accreditation confirms that Saint Mary’s is continually assessing items that affect the residents’ quality of life, such as pain, dignity, and choices that they have in the facilities, and quality of care issues, like weight loss, infections, rehabilitation following acute injury or illness, whether there are enough employees to meet resident needs, and prevention of readmissions to hospitals.

“To achieve Advanced QAPI Accreditation takes a concentrated commitment to the quality in the skilled nursing facility,” says Andrew Kramer, M.D., Chief Executive Officer at Providigm. “Through Saint Mary’s use of the abaqis® Quality Management System, we are able to verify that Saint Mary’s is assessing their quality against the full set of federal regulations and quality standards at an ongoing rate and correcting identified issues.”

The 2017 Saint Mary’s Follies, themed “Inspired by Love,” raised a record breaking $91,960 for the event. Led by Chaircouple Russell and Susan Forquer, the 5th Annual Follies was a huge success thanks to the 62 companies and individuals who sponsored the event, along with all who purchased tickets or made a donation. All proceeds from the Follies are designated for the James E. Mantyla Benevolent Care Fund of Saint Mary’s Home of Erie.

William Bloomstine, Mary Ann and James Toohey, and Donna Geiger were honored with the 2017 Ageless Remarkable Erieite Award. The ARE Award is given to seniors age 75 and older who have remained committed to bettering the Erie community through service and volunteerism.

New Directors of Human Resources, Adult Day Services and Controller

appointed at Saint Mary’s Home of Erie

Kim Figurski has been appointed Director of Human Resources for Saint Mary’s Home of Erie. Kim attended Mercyhurst University, Erie, PA, where she studied Accounting and Human Resource Management. Kim is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and of the Human Resource Management Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania (HRMA). She previously served as the Human Resources Director at Medicor Associates, Inc.

Stacy J. Kemmler, CPA, has been appointed Controller for Saint Mary’s Home of Erie. Stacy attended Clarion University, Clarion, PA, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Stacy is a Certified Public Accountant and previously served as a Controller for over 17 years.

DeAndra Ward, BSW, has been appointed Director of Adult Day Services for Saint Mary’s Home of Erie. DeAndra received a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Mercyhurst University, Erie, PA. DeAndra also holds a Medical Records Certificate, is a Certified Nursing Assistant and has Crisis Response Training. She previously served in Medical Records for the past 11 years at Saint Mary’s East.

2017 Donor and Giving Report

Making a Difference…. We all make a difference in the lives of others. The ways in which we work with others, socialize, collaborate, pray and participate in recreational outlets all have positive or negative effects on those around us. In turn, good or bad, people often share those feelings with others, a ripple effect. You can turn on any media source and see many negative ways that people make a difference. The good news is there are many more instances where people are making a positive difference. This short reflection is one that will highlight the many positive ways that YOU, our donors, sponsors, volunteers and family members, are making a positive difference that ripples through the lives of everyone at Saint Mary’s. As you read through our Annual Report you will read hundreds of names of people who believe in Saint Mary’s Mission and contribute to its success. You will see the contributions Saint Mary’s employees are making in the lives of seniors. You will also see what an organization, which boasts 132 years of caring, does for the local community and economy. It affects every age, young and old, as we come together to help create lifestyles that reflects a quality of life. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when we grow up.” - Pablo Picaso The above quote from Pablo Picaso fits eloquently into what we set out to achieve. The services and care that we offer are often the focal point in a discussion. While we pride ourselves in that care, it is equally important that we offer our Residents many different outlets to express themselves. Art classes, concerts, music therapy, technology, social gatherings, and the list goes on, are all ways Residents continue to be that “artist” despite some of the challenges of aging that someone can experience. singing from dawn to dusk and life blossoms all around us as

this beautiful season touches everything in its path. As you look

through the following pages, please take the time to recognize

and reflect on all of the people who have touched the lives of

seniors that chose Saint Mary’s for their care. It is each individual

that has given a part of their self to help someone else.

In this Annual Report, you will see how love lives on in many different ways

throughout our beautiful campuses. Each donor and volunteer has helped make

the past year special for someone else and that timeless love is what we look to

capture in this report to the community. Thank you for everything you do to stay

connected with our Mission of “Loving to Care.”
