“CARES” Group Has Space CARES meets Monday through Friday, 9:30-12:30 at the Center and is geared for people 60+ with limitations or disabilities, but do not need medical or self-care assistance while in the group. For more info call Lindsey at 860-648-6358.

Caregiver Support Group As a caregiver, do you find yourself in a constant state of physical and mental exhaustion, neglecting your own care, friends, and family? The long-term care system can be confusing and almost impossible to understand and navigate. Who do you turn to when a loved one's health declines (again)? Please join us for our Caregiver Support Group on Friday, December 10 at 10:00 AM at the community center. Denise F. Talbot, a Master's Degree Gerontologist and a Certified Dementia Professional, assists and guides families caring for loved ones with individuals with dementia, chronic diseases, physical disabilities and mental health challenges. We will discuss what long-term care is and how a care manager can help you through the patchwork quilt of options and decisions that, sooner or later, every caregiver/family will need to make. To RSVP or to be included in the email distribution list, please contact Sue at [email protected] or 860-648-6359.

Caregiver Respite Services? Caregiver respite is a short term option that provides a physical and emotional break from the stress of caregiving. Respite can look different to many people. It could be someone to come into the home so you can run errands. It could be utilizing adult day care services. It could also be a short term stay in an assisted living or skilled nursing facility. The North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) provides two different caregiver respite care programs. They both require that the person requiring care has an identified caregiver in order to receive services. This doesn’t have to be a full-time caregiver. Benefits are subject to available funding and if there is financial hardship, a waiver request can be submitted. Both respite programs have both a traditional option where a Care Manager will order and monitor services, and also a self-directed option where the caregiver will select, hire and supervise the individual chosen (this cannot be the spouse or conservator). The National Family Caregiver Support Program requires that the care recipient meets both functional and financial requirements. It also includes supplemental funds that can be used for health related items or services when there is no other way to obtain them. This program does require some cost-sharing for services. These costs are based on the care recipient’s income. The Connecticut Statewide Respite Care Program is specifically for those who have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another irreversible dementia. This program has a mandatory 20% copayment towards the cost of services.

For assistance, please call Human Services or contact The NCAAA at 860-724-6443 or visit their website at www.ncaaact.org.

Behavioral Health Services South Windsor Human Services received funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to provide behavioral health services to residents who can benefit from counseling. Social isolation, the inability to see family during the pandemic and general concerns about the state of the world has brought on anxiety, depression and loneliness for many people. We are partnering with Intercommunity Health Care to provide both individual and group therapy at the Senior Center to support those in need and provide strategies to cope. If you find yourself struggling with getting back into the swing of things or if you want someone to talk to, please contact Human Services at 860-648-6361 and speak to a caseworker. We will work with getting you connected to Intercommunity. Services are confidential. It’s okay to not be okay. Call Andrea with questions. 860-648-6357. Below are two programs being offered to start the conversation with Alexander Pepe, who will be providing these services at the center.

Grief Grief is something that impacts us all and rarely do we have all the answers to cope. Let’s have a discussion together on it and find out what grief really is and what it looks and feels like. Who might be experiencing grief? What are some myths and facts about grief? What is the grieving process, and most importantly, how can we cope with it? Join Alexander Pepe from Intercommunity Health Care at the Senior Center on Friday, December 3 at 11:00 AM. Free, call to register.

Holidays The holiday season can be a joyous time spent with friends, family and loved ones. It can also be a difficult one. Stress of holiday shopping, decorating, and travel; missing loved ones. Join us for an open discussion on navigating the holidays in which we will explore the emotions associated with this time of year, as well as ways to cope. Alexander Pepe from Intercommunity Health Care will be at the Senior Center on Monday, December 13 at 1:00 PM. Free, call to register.

Better Breathers Support Group Riverside Health & Rehab Center is sponsoring a Better Breathers Group at the Senior Center on Thursday, December 9 at 2:00 PM for “Questions & Answers with Becky Simons”, Director of Respiratory Therapy at Riverside. Those with asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, or any chronic lung condition can attend. Caregivers are welcome. Call 860-648-6361 ext. 3335 to register.

South Windsor History This Christmas season join Uncle Joe (Krawski) and John (Mason) for a socially distanced, masked, in-person holiday celebration featuring Joe's tips on fondue-making, Joan Walsh's famous Christmas cookie recipe, a raffle and a half-hour video show. South Windsor native John “Duke” Mason is the producer of the “Riding Shotgun with Joe Krawski” video shows, featuring former South Windsor math teacher and longtime farmer Joe Krawski, 84. For the past three years the two men have driven throughout South Windsor recording residents talking about historical events and places. The two men will return to the Senior Center on Friday, December 17 at 11:00 AM for a morning of baked cookies, singing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and a presentation of videos featuring the late Jimmy Milkie, who built South Windsor's first convalescent home in 1965, Maj. CARDIO DRUMMING With Tiffany

NEW! Come try out this fun, new program that gets your heart rate up in a unique way. This is a type of workout that mixes a variety of standard cardio exercises with a fun and exciting drumming routine. By combining the two you end up with one, full-body, awesome cardio workout! Fun for all fitness levels and ages!! Mondays at 2:30 PM, starting Monday, January 3 running through February 28. Cost will be $14 for the session. Space is limited, register and pay in the office anytime. SW residents only.

Can’t Attend a Program You Registered for?

If you CANNOT attend a program you registered for, please call us in advance. Unfortunately, only about 50% of those who sign up are showing up, especially for programs that we are offering for FREE. We plan the programs based on the number that are signed up which includes ordering food, preparing supplies and paying speakers. It becomes wasteful as we have to pay for and throw away unneeded food and supplies. Additionally, the average price for a speaker is $150. We do not want to charge for educational programs, we simply want you to come. As much as we would not like to cancel programs/entertainment if there is not the amount of interest we would like we will cancel it and save money for another program in the future. It is very important to let us know if you cannot make it to something you have sign up for. Thank you for your help!

American Rescue Plan Act Funds

The Human Services staff is proud to be able to offer assistance to residents who are directly impacted financially by Covid-19. Funds can be used for a variety of needs based on the following criteria:

· Are you a South Windsor resident? · Have you experienced a hardship due to

COVID-19? · Is your income less than $54,950 (single) or

$62,800 (couple) (and more for larger families)?

Residents will be asked to provide proof of their income and assets as well as be able to demonstrate that their specific hardship is a result of loss of income or death due to COVID-19.

These funds are part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) provided to towns from the Federal Government. Call Adult and Senior Caseworkers at 860-648-6361 ext. 3335.

Czepiga Daly Pope & Perri will present on fiduciary roles Wednesday, December 22 at 2:00 PM. When you make an estate plan, you name a POA agent, an executor, a health care agent, and maybe a trustee. Whether you've been named one of these roles for someone else or you're thinking about who you should name in these roles for yourself, there's a lot to know! Is a POA agent and an executor the same thing? What are the differences between each role? Who should you choose? Can multiple people be named in each role? Learn the answers to these questions and more from an experienced estate planning attorney. Free, call to register anytime.
