FOREWORD

'Tis education forms the common mind;

As the twig is bent, the tree's inclined.

-Pope

This quotation, the motto of the Class of 1960, indicates the

idea behind the choice of "TREES" as the theme of Bangor High

School's 1960 Oracle. Just as the strength and productivity of a

tree is dependent on its environment as a sapling, the usefulness

and character of a person depend on surrounding conditions during

youth. Even so, the program of study, extracurricular activities and

sports, and social opportunities of Bangor High School have

contributed to the growth of its students as citizens.

IN APPRECIATION

LAWRENCE "LARRY" STRILEY

Bangor School Agent since 1946, "Larry" Striley has been responsible for purchasing the many kinds of equipment, the books, and all the supplies, from paper clips to heating oils, necessary to maintain and to operate the Educational plant of the Queen City. His beautifully written ledgers are models of the bookkeeper's art at its very best. As he -retires we will miss his stories - and they are true! - of famous golfers who have been his pupils. Our nest wishes go with him as he now has more time to spend with the unusual vegetable varieties and the spectacular flower displays for which he is so noted.

Mr. Lawrence "Larry" Striley, retiring school agent, checks his fil'es.

CLIFFORD "CLIFF" BARCHARD

"Cliff'' Barchard's long tenure as Plant Maintenance Engineer points up in dramatic fashion the many changes and the rapid developments in the schools of Bangor. During his thirty-eight years of service, lighting progressed from gas lamps through single small bulbs on: drop cords to fluorescent fixtures; the hand-wound spring phonograph gave way to transistorized Hi-Fi components and intricate public address systems; and heating changed from hand fired coal boilers to Bunker C burners laden with automatic controls. To this intensely complicated scientific maze, "Cliff" has brought a genuine touch of genius. Like the internal medical specialist his ability to diagnose heating, mechanical or electrical difficulties is· uncanny. He is truly a "master mind" repairs expert. We wish him well as he uses his trailer home for a new base for the hunting and fishing in which he so delights.

FREDERICK W. PINKHAM

DEDICATION :The Class of 1960 takes pleasure in dedicating this year's

Oracle to MR. FREDERICK W. PINKHAM, who, for roughly a quarter of a century, has helped Bangor High School achieve the highest of standards in many different fields,. As a commercial teacher, he has seen many of our students win honors; as a penman, he has no peer; as basketball coach, his teams won two Eastern Maine and one State championship; as Faculty Manager of Athletics, he helped make that department tops. in the state; as advis,er to many groups, his counsel has been unmatched; as a Distributive Education teacher, he conducts a course unequaled in any part of this state. Because of his devotion to duty, his ·high principles and example, and hi& extreme thoroughness in every field, Bangor High School, both faculty and students, joins in this tribute of sincere respect and affection.

SCHOOL

COMMITTEE

1959~1960

To the School Committee, appointed by the Bangor City Council, the City of Bangor delegates the education of its young people. Giving most generously of their time, the Committee sets the educational policy of the Bangor public schools, evaluates new trends in the philosophy of education as these trends affect Bangor, and oversees the building of new schools.

Galen Cole, Presi-dent of Cole's Express, talks with Brother Mel, teacher at John Bapst; Brother Malcolm, Principal of John Bapst High School; Mr. Lawrence A. Peakes, Superinten-dent of Bangor Public Schools; Miss Jessie L. Fraser, A-dviser to the Oracle; Miss Margaret Estes, B.H.S. Spanish teacher; an<i Mr. Efthim Economu, hea<i of the B.H.S. foreign language -department, on Bangor's first Business E-ducation Day, sponsore-d by the Bangor Chamber of Commerce.

Superintendent

lawrence A. Peakes

Mr. Lawrence A. Peakes, Superintendent of the Bangor Public Schools since 1956, is, without doubt, one of the busiest executives in the city. In addition to supervising the many different facets of operating a school qepartment whose budget is well over a million and a half dollars, Mr. Peakes is currently engrossed in a long-range building program. Interested in educational associations on the local, state, and national level, Mr. Peakes is President of the New England Association of School Superintendents. His only regret is that he has so little time for friendly association with teachers and students.

Wendell G. Eaton Curriculum Director

Mr. Wendell G. Eaton, named Curriculum Director of the Bangor Public Schools

in 1958, has fulfilled his position admirably. Meeting almost daily with

curriculum committees composed of both teachers and super

visors, Mr. Eaton is directing a curriculum that should develop each boy

and girl to his fullest capacity. Mr. Eaton! is also responsible for engaging the personnel

for the Bangor Elementary Schools.

FUTURE TEACHERS

OF AMERICA

Peparing students for a teaching career is the purpose of the Future Teachers' Club. Monthly meetings this year were devoted to talks by Bangor High School faculty members and practice teachers from the University of Maine. Several movies on the teaching profession were also shown.

Special activities of the club included an exchange visit with the Old Town FTA group, a record hop in February, and an ushering service at the annual Parents' Night. Several members also experimented in practice teaching at local elementary schools.

Club officers are Patricia Vose, President; Peter Mosher, Vice President; Suzanne Anderson, Secretary; and James Beaver, Treasurer.

The advisers were Miss Ruth Belknap and Mr. Perham Amsden.

FUTURE HOMEMAKER§ OF AMERICA

One of many chapters comprising the national organization, the Bangor High School Future Homemakers of America has a program based on the "Blueprint for Action.''

The goals of this program are to develop potential abilities, to develop a better understanding of family members and to contribute to their welfare, to interpret the value of home economics as a basic part of the total education, and to promote good will by getting to know people both here and abroad.

At a candlelight ceremony in October the following officers were installed: President, Patricia Vose; Vice President, Norma Patterson; Secretary, Helen Pomeroy; Treasurer, Shirley Alexander; Parliamentarian, Suzanne Anderson; Historian, Darlene Miles; Reporter, Charlotte Copan; and Recreation Chairman, Dorothy Melvin.

Patricia Vose served as discussion leader and Andrea Salter was elected secretary at a district convention in November. Other F.H.A. members who attended the convention were Dorothy Melvin, Claudette Lindsay, and Norma Patterson.

The girls also established a point system to provide an incentive to serve the club, school, and community.

The program, "Christmas Around the World," concerned with food, games, and traditions of foreign nations, was presented in December.

April 30, F.H.A. members attended the state convention. On May 20 they presented their annual fashion show for parents and students.

Three years ago interest in skiing at Bangor High School was at a level sufficient to warrant the development of a ski club. The members joined together for the purpose of organizing ski trips and promoting interest in skiing at Bangor High. This year the club name was changed to the Bangor High School Outing Club. The main function became the promotion of winter sports for the outdoor enthusiast. Every other week during the year, the club was able to obtain excellent ski movies from the Penobscot Valley Ski Club. A meeting place for the club, the National Guard Armory on Union Street, was secured by the club's adviser, Capt. John L. Spencer, Jr. In February many members of the club took a day trip to Sugarloaf Mountain.

DEBATE CLUB

Left to right: Steven Buck, M1:s. Geraldine Mandigo, Bonnie Silver, Sheila Striar, Helen Trowbridge, Lynda Gaillard, Richard Chady.

Activities of the Debate Club this year have been challenging and varied. In November the entire Debate Club attended a discussion and debate clinic at the University of Maine. At the clinic the club had an opportunity to hear a college demonstration of a debate, a four-member panel speaking on the labor issue topic, and several secondary schools in practice debates.

The Kiwanis Club invited the debaters to an informal debate, in January, at which Steven Buck brought credit to Bangor High School with his presentation against Brewer. Later that month practice debates were exchanged with Brewer High School.

In February, B.H.S. was one of 76 teams from New England to compete in the annual University of Maine Tournament. The three teams took two wins and two defeats. In March the Bates Interscholastic Debating League held its regional tournament.

Club officers were Steven Buck, president; Helen Trowbridge, vice-president; Sheila Striar, secretary; and Lynda Gaillard, treasurer. The club adviser was Mrs. Geraldine Mandigo.

Caesar (Michael Robson) comforts Cleopatra (Lois lngeneri).

1960 brought forth, as in 1959, another Bangor High School spectacular oneact play. This year George Bernard Shaw's "Caesar and Cleopatra," scored a total hit. In the regional, state, and New England competitions, Bangor High School walked away with top billing.

The excellent direction of Mrs. Barbara M. Browne transformed a twentyminute cutting into a vividly alive play. So impressed were the judges at the New England Drama Festival held in Westbrook, that they unanimously declared the B.H.S. play "excellent" and placed Lois Ingeneri among the roster of All New England Actresses.

The sound effects, lighting, makeup, sets, costumes, and acting were all polished to perfection.

The cast was as follows: Caesar, Michael Robson; Cleopatra, Lois Ingeneri; Flatateeta, Helen Trowbridge; Romans, Steven Buck, Mark Kimball, and Peter Mosher.

.t ~

Under the direction of Mrs. Myrle Coffey and accompanied by Andrea Eaton and Nancy Pearson, the Mixed Chorus, consisting of the Girls' and Boys' choruses, participated in many choral activities during the school year. Following a~ annual tradition, the group sang selections at the Christmas Concert and also at the Christmas Assembly. One of the highlights of the year was an exchange concert with the Brunswick chorus. On March 25, a concert, consisting of several numbers by each chorus and two combined selections, was held at Vine Street School. A repeat performance of this program was given in Brunswick in May. Also in May, the mixed chorus, along with the other musical organizations of B.H.S., traveled to Bucksport to audition for the Eastern Maine Music Festival.

Fourteen members of the chorus represented Bangor High in the chorus of the All-State Music Festival, held in Houlton, Maine, April 6-9. They were Angela Aloupis, Fletcher Carter, Judith Ernst, Thomas Green, Sally Higgins, Mark Kinney, Pamela Lancaster, Sandra Moores, JoAnn Peakes, Joseph Raymond, Michael Robson, Beth Smart, David Swett, and Elizabeth Trowbridge.

Also singing at the Christmas Concert and many other school and city functions was the Mixed Double Quartet, consisting of eight members of the Mixed Chorus and accompanied by Andrea Eaton.

The Girls' Trio, with Pamela Lancaster, Pamela Trojanoski, and Beth Ann Smart, sang at many Bangor clubs during the year; they also had parts in the Christmas assembly and concert.

STETSONETTE§

Dressed in their colorful uniforms, the Stetsonettes Drill Team performed at various activities during the 1959-1960 school year. The team first drilled at half-time during the Bangor-Brewer basketball game at the new Bangor Auditorium. The girls were received with much enthusiasm by the large crowd attending the game. In February the group traveled to \Vaterville to entertain the fans during the half-time of the Bangor-Waterville game. Before the end of the season, several more drilling engagements took place.

Thirty members composed the drill team this year. Under the direction of M/Sgt. Byron Hart, the girls practiced every Tuesday and Thursday at the Army Reserve Center on Union Street. The drill leader for the team was Gertrude Lawrence, who was also president of the group. Vicki Hurd was secretarytreasurer, and Mrs. Doris Piatak was the faculty adviser.

''B'' CLUB

Obtaining membership in the Bangor "B" Club is the goal of every sports-minded boy. To become a member, he must fulfill the requirements for any of the six sports offered at Bangor High School. These sports are football and cross-country in the fall, basketball and skiing in the winter, and baseball and track in the spring. Once having been accepted to the club, the new member receives one of the familiar maroon and wh~te "B'' jackets or "B" sweaters. The club is constantly trying to improve both the players' and spectators' participation in Bangor High School sports.

V AR§ITY FOOTBALL Under the capable guidance of head coach Gerry Hodge and line coach AI "Bobo" Martin,

the 1959 Bangor Rams football team finished with a fine 5-3 record. Conquered by Rumford, Deering, and Portland in their first three games, the Rams then settled down to win the remaining five.

An inspired Ram squad, led by Leroy Patterson's three touchdowns, shut out Waterville in the fourth game of the season by a 27-0 score.

Gardiner was the next Ram victim, bowing 34-7 as Dick Shaw and Leroy Patterson ripped off long gains and Chip Larlee fired a nine-yard touchdown pass to Tom Pappas.

Bangor's third straight victory came at the expense of Cony, 21-6. The game was played in rain and high winds at Augusta.

The Rams then bombed John Bapst 32-0 in the mud at Garland field. The Crusaders were thoroughly outclassed as Bangor picked up their 23rd win in 32 meetings between the teams.

The climax of the season occurred at the annual Veterans' Day encounter with Brewer. The Rams wrapped up the inter-city championship with a 33-6 win over the Witches. The victory was paced by seniors Chip Larlee, Tom Pappas, Dick Price, and Co-Captain Bill Bailey. Sophomore Wayne Philbrick repeatedly blasted through the Brewer line to throw the Witch ball carriers for a big loss. Lou Bohan, Dave Dunham, Dave Jarvis, and Terry Roberson did a fine job opening up holes for the Ram runners.

After losing their first three games, the 1959 Bangor Rams football team came to life to rack up five straight victories. In their first outings, the Rams lost by decisive margins to Rumford, Deering, and Portland. After these losses, the Rams hit the win trail by shutting out Waterville, 27-0. From this point on, the Rams could do no wrong. They climaxed the season taking the inter-city championship, by tromping both John Bapst and Brewer.

Much of the Ram success in the last five games was due to the fine defense unit, the Rangoons. Led by the defensive captain, Terry Roberson, the Rangoons held their last five opponents to a total of 19 Points. Bangor yielded 83 points in the first three games alone. Key men on this squad were Co-Captain Terrence Roberson, Wayne Philbrook, Richard Trott, Paul Newman, Charles Eaton, Clifford Larlee, Larry Homsted, Richard Price, and Thomas Pappas.

The Frosh began the season with a 13-6 loss to the Bangor J.V.'s. The young Rams next fell to the Brewer Frosh, 19-0, as the Witches scored all their points in the first half.

The Rams' lone victory came at the expense of the Bucksport Frosh, 6-0. Following the blanking of Bucksport, the Frosh lost to the Bangor J.V.'s by the identical score of the first game, 13-6.

Brewer and Bucksport were the final Frosh opponents on the schedule. Both clubs pulled out narrow decisions over the Rams.

Very ably coached by Capt. John L. Spencer and M/Sgt. James Redmond, the Bangor High School Ski Team collected its first victory by taking all three places in every event to out-ski Stearns of Millinocket, and Lee Academy of Lincoln in a tri-meet.

The following weekend the team entered the Eastern Maine Ski Championships and after a brilliant fight settled for third place out of nine competitors. The Skiers lost a third meet to M.C.I. of Pittsfield by a fraction of a point. On March 13th they entered the Golden Skis at Bald Mt., skiing against top eastern Maine college and high school competition. After falls by three of its racers, the team once again bowed to a stronger M.C.I. team.

The Rams skiers were strong in both Nordic and Alpine events as against an unbalanced team two years ago. The team also had enough people tryout to warrant sponsoring a junior varsity team. This group gave much-needed racing experience to beginners.

Next year's team will be relying on the talents of returning skiers Bruce McLaughlin, Pete Haney, and some of the J.V. skiers. They will lose Tykie Melvin and Jack Dunn, the two top four-event men.

J~V~BASKETBALL

Coached by AI Martin, the Jayvees compiled a seasonal record of six wins and ten defeats. The squad, primarily made up of sophomores, played many action packed games prior to the varsity games. J ~~ >(

The purpose of Jayvee basketball is to provide future varsity hoopsters and to enable the younger players to gain experience under actual game conditions.

An oddity occurred this year in that every game which the Jayvees won was followed by a varsity victory. The junior Rams won games from Houlton, Stearns, Bangor Frosh, Waterville, and twice from Ellsworth.

The Jayvees were led by the hard-driving play of Louis Bohan and Wayne Philbrick. Phil Mcintire was a steady player who always picked up a few rebounds. Frank Bettencourt and Whit Russell were the playmakers who could score when the chips were down.

In November Coach Frederick "Red" Barry was faced with a squad stripped of experienced players because of graduation. Only . one letterman, Dick Shaw, remained from the New England finalists of the previous year. The problem · which confronted Coach Barry and his assistant Gordon Smith was to find a winning combination. The 7-10 record turned in by the Ram cagers indicates that this combination didn't jell for any long period of time.

The Rams started out slowly, winning only two of their first eight games. One of these victories was a decisive win over highly-rated Concord, N. H., by a 58-45 score.

About midway through the season, Bangor picked up three big wins in a row by conquering Waterville, Ellsworth, and Stearns. These wins were not enough, however, to enable the team to gain a berth in the tournament.

Sophomore Leroy Patterson led the Rams in nearly every department. He was high scorer in almost every game and also hauled down innumerable rebounds. Rugged Dick Shaw was another who grabbed many bounces off the boards.

Aivars Knuble, a hard-working senior, possessed a good scoring touch for the Rams. A fine ball handler, Charlie Eaton, was also a real worker on defense. AI McClure played a major role in the Ram victories.

Ronnie Stratton and Bill Pidgeon, a couple of hustling sophomores, stepped capably into starting assignments many times during the season.

Behind these first seven men were Harry Bridgham, Jon Dauphinee, Phil McTigue, Paul Newman, und Gordon Titcomb.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Sparked by all-round teamwork, the Bangor Frosh gained a tie in the newly formed Penobscot Valley Freshman Conference. Coach Roger Miles, in his first year at Bangor High, guided the team to a fine 7-3 record. In addition to the regular schedule, before the Bangor-Houlton game the Frosh played the Bangor J.V.'s and lost 43-27.

Needing only a victory in their last game against ~ winless Ellsworth to bring about a three-way tie, the Frosh handily whipped the Eagles, 64-28. By winning this final game, the Rams overtook Old Town, who led the conference all season, and Orono. Brewer's victory over Old Town in their last game enabled the young Rams to gain a tie.

High scorers Bob Cohen, Danny Gooding, and Tom Young sparked the Rams all season. The fine play of Ken Lynch fired the team to many victories. Jim Frederick and Steve Kalloch were big rebounding factors. Playmakers Greg Barrows and Bill McManus settled the team down when the going got rough, and both could score when things looked bad.

The initial year of the P.V.F.C. was one of many surprises and of good balance.

The Bangor Ram baseball squad, at the time of this writing, has not completed its schedule. Under the guidance of Coach Frederick "Red" Barry, the Rams have won three games and dropped only two close contests.

Ram veterans who returned from last year's team form the nucleus of the squad. These players include "Ace" Shindler, a capable man with both bat and glove; Phil McTigue and Joe Sazin, the solid hitting left side of the Ram infield; Lou Bohan, the hustling catcher and sparkplug of the Rams; and AI McClure, the southpaw hurler with a wide assortment of pitches. Top sophomores who moved into starting berths are Bruce Doughty, Paul Newman, Leroy Patterson, and Ronnie Stratton.

BASEBALL

The Bangor Rams Baseball Team, under Coach Frederick "Red'' Barry, began the season in fine fashion by rolling over John Bapst, 9-3. While southpaw AI McClure held the Crusaders to two harmless singles, the Rams banged out fourteen hits to pile up a substantial number of runs.

Bangor took the lead for good in the big run fourth inning which was climaxed by Joe Sazin's bases loaded single. The Rams put the game on ice with a four run rally in the eighth inning. Ace Shindler led Bangor at the plate with four hits in five trips while Joe Sazin, AI McClure, and Ron Stratton all had a pair of hits.

In the next outing, the Rams were held to four hits by Brewer's Danny Coombs as they fell in a tight three-two game. AI McClure again pitched for Bangor and lost the fine pitching duel in the seventh when the Witches pushed across the only earned run of the game. Brewer picked up six hits against the left-handed slants of McClure.

Old Town was the next Ram victim as Al McClure fired a no-hitter at the Indians. McClure struck out 13 men on the way to his 7-inning masterpiece. The final score was 4-0. Paul Newman, Lou Bohan, and Francis Richards got the only three hits of the game for either team.

Lefty Bill Pidgeon pitched the next game for the Rams as they fell to Ellsworth by a 7-3 score. Bangor got two hits in this game, both by Pidgeon.

Track Coach Norman "Cy" Perkins was faced with a rather thin squad in the spring of 1960. He had only two lettermen, juniors Reggie Archer and Dick Shaw, with whom to form the nucleus of the team. Reggie Archer was an important point getter in the sprints, in the high jump, and especially in the broad jump. Dick Shaw was a key weightman, who also was the top high jumper on the Ram squad.

Ram sprinters included Bruce Flagg, Dick Green, Norm Kominsky, and Ken Maker. These sprinters, along with Dick Trott, also participated in the broad jump. Trott also was the key man in the hurdles for Bangor.

Middle and long distance runners were Bob Barker, Don Dyer, John Gilbert, Allan Parker, John Perkins, Joe Raymond, Mike Robson, and Alan Sollien.

The Ram weightmen were.Jed by Dave Dunham, Wayne Philbrick, Terry Roberson, and Dick Shaw. The Ram thinclads picked up many important points in the shotput, discus, and javelin.

The Bangor Ram Track Squad began the season with the annual Interclass Meet on April 27-28. The juniors, with 119% points soundly tromped the seniors, 49 points, and the sophomores, who had 22% points. Individual stars for the juniors were Dick Trott, who scored 27 points, including four first places, and Reggie Archer, who grabbed two firsts and three seconds for 22 points. Mike Robson was the outstanding performer for the senior team. Robson scored 20% points, as he won both the mile and the half-mile.

In the first competition against other schools, the Rams traveled to Waterville for a quadrangular meet against the Colby Frosh, Portland, and Waterville. Bangor, with 24 points, came in second to the powerful Colby Frosh, who scored 76 points. However, in defeating Portland and Waterville, the Rams kept the string intact of not having been beaten by a high school team in duo, triangular, or quadrangular competition for thirteen years.

Reggie Archer set a new Bangor High School record in the broad jump at Waterville. Archer jumped 21 feet, 1 inch, to win the event. Bangor's only other winner was Dick Spaw in the high jump.

In the next meet the Rams met defeat at the hands of the University of Maine Frosh, by 117 to 10 score. Bangor failed to win one event in this meet.

Bangor High School teams, but also for Bates College in the Downeast Classic. Besides leading cheers

at the games, the squad instructed other girls so that Bangor High will have experienced

cheerleaders.

Certificates, pins, and school letters were presented to the girls and their ad

viser, Mrs. Louise Hammons, at the cheerleaders' banquet and at All

Bangor Nite. Also at All Bangor Nite, 1960-61 va ·

sity cheerleaders weiv announced.

JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERERS

Left to right: Sandr,a Larlee, Jane Hassen, Bernice Ross, Susan Briggs, Nancy Arnold, Beverley C o n n e r s, Pamela Gervais.

A familiar sight in their maroon and white jumpered uniforms, the Junior Varsity Cheering Squad is the spark behind the J.V. basketball team. Just as the J.V. team trains to become future varsity players, the J.V. cheering group gains experience to become future varsity cheerleaders.

During the year the girls practiced faithfully under the direction of Captain Bernice Ross. In addition to cheering at J.V. games, the group helped arouse enthusiasm at the beginning of varsity games and spurred on Colgate University · in the Downeast Classic. Mrs. Louise Hammons, who retired this year as the group's adviser, was honored at the annual Cheerleaders' Banquet, which was sponsored by the J.V. Cheerleaders.

G. A. H. C. A familiar sight at Bangor High Schoo],.is the arm bands of the Girls' Athletic Honor Council. At

Little City Park in the fall, senior members of G.A.H.C., with Roberta Rankin as hockey manager and Sharon Dauphinee as assistant, coached field hockey. Seniors also coached basketball, and all members assisted in scoring and judging at volleyball games. As an extra activity, the group held frequent cup-cake sales. They also sold food at the football games and sponsored a food booth at Teachers' Convention to serve the teachers and book salesmen.

The preparation of awards and armbands for participation in sports and election to the Council was another project of the Girls' Athletic Honor Council. The highlights of the 1959-1960 year occurred when new members were initiated into the Council at the field hockey party held in the school auditorium in the fall, at the assembly on February 12, and also at the basketball banquet held at a local restaurant in the spring. At the school assembly, a skit entitled "Outer-Space Sports'' was presented with Janice Jordan as narrator. JoAnn Peakes then gave a short history of G.A.H.C., and the girls gave the formal rituals for initiation for new members. This assembly and the later banquet climaxed a successful year in sports for the Girls' Athletic Honor Council.

This year's officers were as follows: Nancy Cpnnors, President; Roberta Rankin, VicePresident; Mary Girvan, Secretary; and Ann Rowell, Treasurer. The faculty adviser for the Council was Miss Mildred E. McGuire.

ALL~ BANGOR FIELD HOCKEY TEAM

Early in October the girl's field hockey season opened. After many practices at Little City Park, the sophomores, juniors, and seniors played four games each for the hockey championship, won by the juniors. The annual field hockey party, sponsored by the Girls' Athletic Honor Council under the supervision of Mi>s Mildred E. McGuire, was held in the school auditorium at the close of the season. At /the party, awards \vere given, and the members of the All-Bangor Hockey Team were announced.

Keeping up with the latest rules for basketball officiating provided a full-time job for the members of the Officials Club. Miss Mildred McGuire, adviser, instructed the girls in new procedures at the regular meetings.

Before being able to officiate at the regular games, each girl had to pass a written examination concerning basketball regulations.

Mrs. Betty Solorzano assisted the club with the officiating, timing and scoring of the games.

Competing for the intramural basketball championship were two teams from each class, sophomore, junior, and senior. The Junior Red team, captained by Sharon Dauphinee, won the championship trophy with a perfect record of no losses. Second place tie went to the Senior White, captained by Paula Rolsky, and the Sophomore White, with Martha Getchell as captain.
