Transcript of the mome sound - Ryan Formato
A journey that started from the Edge of Insanity has seen Tony MacAlpine return to his roots with his self-titled offering. The pianist, virtuoso, and producer talks shop about Steve Vai, practicing, lessons learned, and hopes for the future.

The Sound: Let us get straight to the new stuff! Tell us about your latest record simply entitled Tony MacAlpine and what, after ten years since Chromaticity, in-spired you once again to record an instrumental album?
Tony MacAlpine: Well the new record is a self-titled album. It is a really heavy instrumental re-cord that I had the pleasure of re-cording with Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati and Phillip Bynoe. I really had a lot of fun doing this record and was so involved doing many other things over the years that this just really felt like the time was right to come back and write this record over the course of last year and record it.
TS: Over the years you’ve played six, seven, and now eight string guitars. What drives you to con-tinue to explore extended range instruments and how do you feel these different types of guitars

persuade your stylistic tenden-cies?
TM: Guitars, amplifies, elec-tronics and the like have come so far and the waiting time is very short and the progress is very tense. The stuff they come up with between ev-ery other quarter amp show and yearly amp show is pretty amazing. These guitars that I’m using now are really just another example of the inno-vation and where the instru-ments are at. What they do is create the tonal capabilities of all the recordings especially
the live performances. With the eight string you’re able to play in much fuller registers and you can really experiment with different chord substitu-tions and enhance the sonic bass lows depending on how you string the eight string. Some people string them a little higher, some people use the lower string, some people go to a low E. I’m using a stan-dard guitar tuning so the low-est string on the instrument is an F#. Basically that is the idea of the seven and the eight. It is really just to add another full range to the instrument.
TS: You’re guitar tone has changed over your twenty-five year career and yet still retains a very clear signature sound. Most will agree that tone ul-timately resides in the hands, but what is your approach to setting up an amp to achieve your sound?
TM: My amplification is very, very simple. It’s always been and it’s always going to be. In the studio I use Hughes & Kettner Triamps which are re-ally just three stage hundred watt tube heads. There are no effects involved or anything. It‘s just straight into the amp and then we record the tracks and mix them. This record was mixed by Ulrich Wild. He’s a Grammy award winning engi-neer and is very skilled at get-ting and achieving really good tones. I use different things to achieve different sounds. Sometimes I work with plug-ins with different things in the studio and enhance the track that way which is noth-ing new. It’s pretty standard fare. In a live situation, I also use Hughes & Kettners but I don’t use Triamps. I use the Coreblades. The Coreblade is a hundred watt head. It’s a fully tube head also but it’s got all the effects and gating built inside the head. So there are no external effects I’m using. I’m really just using the head on stage and it’s a very pure sound. Again you have these independent effects chains

that are bi-products of the am-plifier itself so there is no tone degradation. On the floor I use and Ernie Ball volume and an Ernie Ball wah pedal and a Multiwave Source Audio ped-al. And that’s about all I got going on.
TS: How do you feel the eight string locking tremolo system compares to for seven and six string guitars?
TM: It’s the same thing. My guitar has a Gotoh in the bridge and it is the same thing as the six string or anything. There’s no difference. They’re all lock-ing systems in the guitars.
TS: Rock guitar and classical piano are not worlds apart but appear to share an influential relationship in your music. How have you found your clas-sical piano studies and endeav-ors to influence the seemingly infinite depth of your rock song writing?
TM: Instrumental music to me started with classical music. I began listening to symphonies and I began a five playing in-strumental piano music which is from the classical genre. Anything from Beethoven to List and Chopin and all kinds of stuff. I do that today and record it. That’s what I was doing and that was my first ex-posure to music so my compo-sition is driven by the fact that, from what I understand it to be, it’s based on classical writ-

ing except it’s with drums, guitar and bass. I wasn’t re-ally influenced only through rock music or Johnny Win-ter’s music or George Benson who I credit as being some of the highest influences for me. That was the start of it for me; the classical. And to me that is just a continuation of it now.
TS: You’ve said once in an interview that most every-thing you’ve written has been recorded and released at one point in time. This point speaks volumes about the quality of music that you write. Do you find the writing process ever to be frustrating or do you find that the music frequently writes itself?
TM: No, I don’t find it to be frustrating at all. What I was really trying to say was the exploration of different har-monies and many things have been recorded and tried. Cer-tainly if we do research and listen to great classical works and obscure fusion works and different things from differ-ent artists, you can find a lot of things that are similar to a lot of people. The writing process for me is a very work ethic type of thing. I’m ok if I’m not creative for a day or if I happen to have something that evening, I can record it the next day. There is no one real process for me so I can write on keyboards or gui-
tar or some bass lines or I can write just in my head. I’m hap-py if I don’t have anything be-cause that means that I might have something the next day. For me it’s really just a matter of sitting down and trying to get your thoughts into the stu-dio and make it musical.
TS: Having deeply explored many different styles of guitar playing, do you find that you can compartmentalize each or do you find that they blend to-gether during improvisation?
TM: For instance if I was play-ing with CAB, which I haven’t done in a long time, it’s a com-pletely different style of gui-tar playing. I’m always doing something with Planet X and it would be something com-pletely different. So I have definitive styles that I can call upon to play. I also do some situations where I might just play a setting where; for in-stance I just did That Metal Show and sat in and played in the perch there and played primarily with more of a rock and blues approach. So there are all kinds of styles that I’m really fascinated with and have my hands on and enjoy that. It all depends on what I want to do, how I want to play, and how I want to be heard, what I really want to say in the par-ticular environment that I’m playing in.
TS: What is your current prac-tice routine like?
© A
lex Solca
TM: I don’t have a current practice routine. I was talking with Steve (Vai) about this and it is kind of funny. We started playing music so young and it is almost like English. When you’re speaking the language, you don’t go back and start studying grammar again. You definitely don’t do that. You just continue on learning and broadening your vocabulary. That’s really what we do. We continue broadening. I defi-nitely don’t sit home and prac-tice scales or anything like that. If I’m learning anything, I’m learning somebody’s set that I’m going to play or some of the music that I wrote. For instance, it took a lot of study to get some of these lines done on the new record be-cause I wrote them down us-ing a program. It’s just to be more of a fresh approach if I’m reading some stuff rather than memorizing it. I get to memo-rize it later and go about it that way. To me music is a contin-ual growth and it’s not neces-sary to go back to the building blocks or the fundamentals.
TS: You are an artist who con-tinues to “one-up” yourself with each record you put out. We’re not talking about play-ing faster or heavier here, but more along the lines of con-tinuing a life-long progressive
pursuit of music. What drives your inspiration?
TM: It’s the love of music, it’s the love of playing and it’s the love of working with other musicians that’s always driven me and also the joy of seeing a creation come to life in a final mix and hearing what it takes to make that sound like some-thing wilder than your furthest imaginations. That’s the drive for me: a love for music.
TS: Which of your contem-poraries currently inspire your guitar playing?
TM: I really don’t think that any of my contemporaries in-spire my guitar playing. I mean I started music way too young to really go through a thing where I was inspired or influenced. I was driven to play music by lis-tening to professionals play. I don’t really listen to somebody to get information on what I’m really going to do for my next approach. I mean there are so many wonderful young play-ers out there that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. The guitar player that we have in this band now, Nili Brosh is a young twenty-two year old woman from Israel; an amaz-ing player, just a stunning play-er. We just did a show with her in Hollywood and I’m get-ting ready to go to Japan and
take her on the tour further in the year and later, Europe. And so just being around these incredible players like her and Tosin Abasi and Guthrie Govan and seeing where guitar is go-ing is something that is very in-spirational. It’s very good for the movement of what is going on with guitar.
TS: What drove you to pursue a career as a guitarist rather than a pianist?
TM: I can’t say it was really one or the other. I started around twelve playing guitar and then when I was in col-lege I got some offers to write some stuff for some different people and I did and then end-ed up getting a record deal. You know, coming out of col-lege you just really want to go in a direction you feel like it’s feasible at that moment. It seemed like the thing for me to do and that really was the decision factor. My mind was always made up that whatever panned out first I would take that route; I did.
TS: Back to your latest solo release! The song Fire Moun-tain opens with an ear-catch-ing polyrhythmic section. You and Virgil create a tight rhyth-mic harmony all while it seems you are deliberately and very musically playing just behind
the beat. How does your music see itself through to fruition? How much of it is in-teraction between the musicians, and how much of it is written and directed by you?
TM: The entire re-cord is written and directed by me. For instance, all the drum parts, when I wrote the songs in the stu-dio, were done in Su-perior Drummer and I recorded and played the stuff. So the tracks that the drummers ac-tually play on are the finished tracks; they’re playing to what’s al-ready created. We tried to do stuff in another way but it wasn’t really good. I prefer the drummers to have the freedom of knowing where the final picture is, where we’re intending to go rather than doing it the other way around like when I did Edge of Insanity. I tracked to the actual drums. Often times I can get such a great feel out of these guys and I can go back and change some parts which we did after they had ac-tually played, but the whole idea of the song
is already put together. They’re actually play-ing to what is created and what is written.
TS: Seven The Hard Way features an all start line-up and some great modern rock/metal songs. Does the band have any plans to record a new record?
TM: Not at this point, no. We’re just really involved with engag-ing different tour of-fers that we’ve had and to go out and sup-port the record either by ourselves or in sup-port of other bands. That’s really our focus right now.
TS: What was it like playing in Steve Vai’s band?
TM: Well I just did a show with Steve Vai on the 14th (7/14/11). I played six songs for him in his set and it was a Cliff Cultreri ben-efit. It was a wonder-ful event. Cliff Cultreri was a very important person in the music industry who was re-sponsible for signing both Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, which did wonders for obviously this whole movement. Playing with Steve is

like playing music with a friend, because we’ve been friends for so long. He’s been a wonder-ful source of guidance for me as well as somebody that I can bounce ideas off, and playing his music is something that I’ve always loved because I love his compositions and I love his playing. It was a lot of fun just to do this; these six songs that we did. I always look forward to doing some stuff together, very cool.
TS: Tell us what your experi-ence with Favored Nations has been like!
TM: The record is out on Fa-vored Nations and is also out on another label, Sundog. What we’re doing is working very intensely with them, with Favored, to get the best place-ment and the best position we can for this record by as much as we can and working with Steve has been great in that respect. Over the years I’ve done
some other stuff with him, had the CAB record come out with Favored Nations and that did very well. So it’s a very hands-on company and we’re look-ing forward to some success-ful things happening with this one.
TS: Who are some of the art-ists that you would love to work with but have not had the chance to yet?
TM: I don’t really know. I don’t have a laundry list of people that I’d like to work with. Like I said, I really enjoy listening to music and I don’t necessarily have to play with certain musicians to be able to understand and enjoy what they’re doing because listen-ing is fun and being involved with them is something com-pletely different. I think the most current musicians that I play with now are really ful-filling a quest for me. Actually working with Marco has been something that I’ve wanted to
do for quite a while. Actually getting that together and mak-ing that happen has just been wonderful for us.
TS: You appeared in the bi-opic “Crazy: The Hank Garland Story” as jazz giant Wes Mont-gomery. What was that like for you?
TM: It was fun, I enjoyed that. It was a lot of fun to actually be involved with a movie like that and seeing the similarities in that craft and what I actu-ally do was really amazing to me because there are so many similarities in what they do to achieve that perfect take. It was really fun. I love the music and always loved Wes Mont-gomery so being able actu-ally play those vintage guitars and dress up in vintage style clothes; it was really pretty in-tense.
TS: What is the most mem-orable moment that you can recall that you’ve shared with your guitar?
TM: I don’t know. That is a good question. There are a lot of memorable moments I think that I’ve shared with the guitar (laughs). Every time we take the stage, it’s a lot of fun. Maybe playing in Paris at the celebration with Michael Pol-nareff . Virgil Donati and I and a host of other musicians did this show and played the tour with him for almost a couple years in Europe and Asia. Mi-

chael Polnareff is a French art-ist that was very popular in France and countries of the like in the seventies and then he retired and came back and did this big tour which was re-ally quite successful. Every gig was sold out, there were twen-ty-five thousand seat venues a night. He sold out Bercy Sta-dium fourteen shows in a row. That was a lot of fun coming from being able to experience going up and being able to just play as a soloist. Basically that is what I did. He had other gui-tar players in the band but my job was just to come up and rip up these solos over his mu-sic so I’d have to say that was pretty much a lot of fun. Play-ing at the Eiffel Tower show doesn’t happen every so often in your life. That was two mil-lion people there, Nelly Furta-do and everything. So that was a very memorable thing. So there are many things like that that are musically related that I enjoyed. And I enjoy things on a much smaller scale just as much. When CAB went to Japan and sold out all the Blue Notes, that was just to-tally amazing. Just being able to play in such legendary clubs, you know? It did so well, and that was with Dennis Cham-bers and myself and Bunny Brunnel. It was really just a lot of fun.
TS: You’ve got the last word!
TM: I just would like to thank
everyone over the years that really became involved in mu-sic with all artists and people that love music. That’s the most important thing. You know what we have to keep the interest going is to love mu-sic and support it and if you’re a player, love it and really en-joy the experience of giving and receiving music because
after all it is the most unique art form that we have and it is something that really needs to be cherished. I’d like to thank the readers and the listeners over the years that have given so much of their time to follow the stuff that I’m doing. All the best to everybody and I hope to see them out there on the road!

OutdriveA few years ago I realized that I'd spent almost all of my adult life working. I'm not complaining because I love what I do. Still, it's important to get away from it to gain a fresh perspective. It energizes me. I needed a hobby that had nothing to do with guitar. Growing up, my cousins always had speedboats, and they lived near the water. I remembered how much fun I had with them. I bought a boat.
No-one told me how much work owning a boat is!
An outdrive is the mechanism on a speedboat that connects the engine to the propellor. When I wrote this song, I was thinking about how much fun it is to drive a speedboat really fast. There's nothing complex, or thoughtful. Only the joy of going fast! I wanted to convey that in the song.
Most of the song is based on a "Classic Rock" style. So many classic rock tunes are in A, so the key choice seemed obvious. We also wanted enough "twists and turns" in the song so it would hold the listener's interest. We tried everything to make it sound "fun."
Most of the licks are either Classic Rock blues licks, or arpeggios. Of course there are some scale runs too! Even a little bit of tapping!
Pay close attention to keeping the bends in tune. In the tablature, the parenthesis,"( )" show the bend-note's target pitch. This is important because there are some unusal chords use in the song.
Good luck and have fun!
