Message from the President

I would like to start out by touching on some of our highlights from our April 25th quarterly voters meeting. First, we welcome in a transfer in of Peter & Grace Ording and their children Jacob & Sarah from Bethany, Manitowoc. We also transferred out A.J. Kenneke to Immanuel, Manitowoc. We received two bids on Pastor’s house for the maintenance work. We are going to discuss this at our next church council meeting, and then call a special voters meeting to act on this. Our church is again working the Manitowoc County Fair at our WELS district booth, this August. We are looking for a couple of people to help man the booth for a few hours during the fair. Please talk to Pastor or Todd Bergmann if interested. Our church picnic is set for June 25th at the church this year, with an outdoor service, weather permitting. I recently talked to Jennifer Pope and she is very excited about her new Women’s Bible Class on Saturday mornings, which is being well received. We have a few committee openings to fill. One is Board of Evangelism and we have a couple of nomination letters going out to individuals for this position. The other position that we are looking to fill is President of the Cemetery Committee. If you are interested in this position, please talk to Pastor or Harry Bratz. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these committees. We also moved our Saturday evening service to Tuesday evening for the summer months, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend at 7 p.m. Don’t forget that Adopt-A-Highway clean-up and Spring Church clean-up on Saturday, May 13th. As I am writing this, we are receiving a lot of rain, so hopefully it’ll be dry by then to do these projects. Please come out to help, the more people we get, the quicker it goes. The rain date for both is the following Saturday, May 20th. And finally, congratulations to our three new confirmands; Marissa Bratz, Deisel Hammel and Brooke Hansen. Keith Petersen Church President

Know the Truth

“Your word is truth.” - John 17:17

Human beings have never stopped desiring to search for the truth. And who can blame us?

As we swim our way through life, so often we find ourselves in deep water over our heads, water that has a muddy bottom which is sometimes slimy and threatens to trap our feet. What could feel better than to finally touch a smooth, solid, rock bottom where we can plant our feet and rest, keep our heads above water, catch our breath?

God’s word is rock-solid truth. That’s how Jesus described it. He was speaking to his heavenly Father in prayer when he said, “Your word is truth.” Though such a simple statement, it is a profound reality. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, testifies that the word of God the heavenly Father is truth!

It’s hard sometimes to hear the truth. It can cause us to hang our head in shame and even cringe with fear. Truth that God tells us is every bit as difficult to hear. He tells us the truth that we are sinful. The sin that swirls around in our heads and floods our hearts is devastating. Sin brings death—every kind of isolating, slimy, feet-trapping death, including the eternal kind.

God tells us the truth about sin so that we are willing to listen to a more important truth. The truth that his Son, Jesus Christ, came and lived the perfect life required of those who want God to care about them in this life and save them for the life to come. The truth that he died the perfect death on the cross that completely paid for sin. The truth that he rose again to prove he had done everything that is necessary for our salvation. The truth that he did this for every sinful human being. He did it to give us a firm foundation for life—a blessed life with God now and forever.

And do you know how God gives us everything Jesus earned for us by his life, death, and resurrection? Through his rock-solid word.

And that’s the truth!

News from the WELS

Assignment days approach

2017/05/02/in Together

The next two weeks will bring two high points of the year at both Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minn., and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wis. At both of our schools, students will graduate and receive their degrees. Probably even more notable, at both schools candidates for the public ministry in WELS will receive their first calls on Assignment Day.

4

At Martin Luther College, students enrolled in the pastor track will graduate from college, well prepared to continue their training for the pastoral ministry at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Students graduating from the teacher and staff ministry programs will present themselves for assignment. By doing so, these graduates express their willingness to go wherever the Lord of the church sends them through calls issued through the synod’s Assignment Committee. At Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, graduates will be assigned to their first calls in the pastoral ministry, while those who have completed two years of the seminary will be assigned as vicars. At both schools, it appears that there are fewer candidates than needed to fill requests. It’s the double responsibility of the Assignment Committee to assign candidates to places of the greatest need and to places where the skills and abilities of the candidates can best be used. In the coming week, we will be praying fervently. We will thank God for providing well-trained and willing workers for his harvest field. We will be asking God to send his Holy Spirit to guide the decisions of the Assignment Committee. And we will be praying that God would give these new workers strength, wisdom, and courage as they answer his call. Both assignment services can be viewed live online. Find times and livestream links at wels.net/events. Serving in Christ, President Mark Schroeder

Heart to heart: Parent conversations : How do we keep our children safe online? 2017/05/01/in FIC Features, Forward in Christ How do we balance law and gospel with our children? I don’t know about you, but the idea of my children surfing the Internet scares me. I’m unsure of how to protect them from the bad while letting them benefit from the good. This month Heart to heart is blessed to have articles from two moms who understand these fears, have lived through them themselves, and have a variety of helpful solutions so that the Internet can be a positive resource rather than a scary one. Nicole Balza ******************************************************************************************************************* It seems like yesterday when the Lord blessed my husband and me with our three sons and we began the journey of parenthood in the digital age. When our oldest was born in 1995, the Internet was brand new to everyone. Being a bit geeky, my husband and I explored tools and techniques for creating websites, which led us to bridging the miles between us and our family and friends, sharing each of our boys’ first-year baby milestones and photos via a website that we updated monthly. Over time, as the boys grew, we continued to share monthly family news and photos using a “cutting-edge” blog platform to house our family website. Together with our sons, we’ve used the Internet to listen to family-friendly podcasts and free audio books, find geocaches and BreakoutEDU solutions, take care of our Webkinz pets, e-mail our favorite authors, learn to program, play games, create videos, design 3-D models, and so much more. Now our boys are reaching adulthood, and we are fast approaching the empty-nest stage. As I reflect on the years of their childhood, I remember joys and challenges we encountered along the way in relation to technology. In this sinful world, it is impossible to keep our children 100 percent safe from

5

the dangers the Internet invites into our homes. Here are some of the steps we took to guard their safety:

• Engage with them—Before allowing our boys to visit a website, we tried it out ourselves or sought the opinions of others regarding it. (A great site for reviews of all types of children’s media is commonsensemedia.org.) As our boys used websites, we used them too, guiding our boys along the way and explaining any areas of concern that came up.

• Help them create—We used the tools available on the Internet to excite our sons to use the Internet for good and noble purposes. As they learned how to code video games, we encouraged them to expand the program’s capabilities. When their interest was piqued by podcasts, we started a weekly family podcast. Over the years we used our family blog to share the boys’ creative writing, stop-motion Lego movies, and Haiku poetry.

• Block inappropriate content—Many software solutions for filtering inappropriate Internet content in the home are available. Something we’ve used for many years is OpenDNS, opendns.com/home-internet-security. The free Family Shield and Home plans include parental controls that protect every device in the home.

My husband and I did all of these things with an end goal in mind—giving our sons discerning hearts. All too quickly they have grown up and ventured out into the world alone. Now they must rely on their own judgement regarding the appropriateness of Internet content. Our prayer is that the lessons learned in their early years will stay with them.

Sallie Draper and her husband, Kevin, have three sons and live in New Ulm, Minnesota.

*******************************************************************************************************************

How many parents would take their two-year-olds to the pool for the first time and allow them to jump into the deep end? None, I hope! Being able to swim in the deep end is a process that requires lessons, practice, and experience, all guided by loving parents who want their children to enjoy swimming safely. Staying safe on the Internet is not much different. If we want our teens to know how to enjoy using it safely, we must start the process early. This can be done in the light of God’s Word and his commands.

Internet safety is a wide net, but most parents identify several areas in which they wish to keep their children safe online.

• They are concerned with the addictive potential of games.

• They share concern over their children stumbling upon offensive sites, such as pornography. This is often connected with the idea of sexting, which occurs as early as middle school.

• Finally, parents fear the online social sites that encourage kids to talk with others, whether on gaming sites or social media sites that encourage kids to follow and be followed by others. These sites raise the concern of meeting strangers online who may not be who they portray as well as the opportunity for online bullying.

Unfortunately, many of us ignore these things until a problem arises. Being proactive in approaching these subjects really helps. Start early. As parents, if we treat technology as a gift of God while training children to be aware of the dark side on the Internet, we can pray that they develop their Christian faith to assist them in making good and responsible choices. One way we can do that is by talking freely about the evil that is in the world that is now manifested online and can be found one click away. We can discuss this during devotions and in conversations with our children from the time they are in grade school and beyond.

6

The old model of keeping the desktop computer in an area of the home where Mom and Dad are walking through and can be aware of computer activity may seem outdated since we now deal with smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and laptops. I think it is still reasonable to expect grade school and middle school kids to use their technology in a common area of the home. It is legitimate for a parent to be made aware of musical playlists so that when headphones are used, parents know what is being consumed. As kids grow and schoolwork requires technology, a quiet place may be desirable, but it should still be understood that when homework is done on the computer, that is all that is happening, and parents may come by to see how it is going. Parents need to be vigilant.

At a time determined by parents, all mobile technology can be unplugged and kept in a specified spot. For example, maybe all family devices get plugged in at a common location for the night. Enforce the rules as you talk about why they are good for the family.

Parents can also make rules regarding time limits for game playing and can talk openly about gaming choices and their possible effects on those who play them. Conversations about learning to discern should be ongoing. Social gaming sites, perhaps, should not be allowed until an age that a parent feels the child can make competent choices in this regard. Parents will need to model good online behavior and set the tone for what is acceptable in the home. It should be a family effort.

The creation of the Internet brings many good things to us, but the reality is that it has created another level of parenting. Parents must include applications regarding the misuse of the Internet as they teach their children to discern right from wrong in all facets of life. For example, what is learned in the home as far as how to treat one another in God-pleasing ways can help children be aware of the inappropriateness of bullying online, as an extension of bullying face to face. The idea of sexting as a practice can be addressed as veering outside of what God has commanded us regarding how to keep our bodies chaste. This is an extension of pre-Internet conversations with children that now need to be brought into the scope of what sins are possible through technology. We ask God to keep us from temptation in all we do, including in our use of technology.

Parents have always taught their children about “stranger danger.” This same conversation now must be expanded to teach children about the very real dangers of social media sites with followers. Talking on those sites or on online chat areas should be discouraged. The news often shares stories of online predators and the attempt to catch them, and you can discuss these news items at family gathering times to drive this point home. We are blessed to have God’s Word as our handbook for parenting, and it is up to us as parents to continue to nurture our children in that Word as we make applications from the technology that is so ubiquitous in our culture today. May he bless our prayerful efforts!

Discussing pornography with children

7

Any child who is using the Internet can encounter pornography. Conquerors through Christ, a Special Ministries team that provides resources to help people avoid or stop using pornography, has compiled resources for parents to deal with this situation. The First Word is an e-book that provides advice for talking to a child about pornography. Other e-books include Warning kids about pornography and Correcting kids who use pornography. For more information, visit conquerorsthroughchrist.net, choose “resources,” and then choose “e-books.” Bible – Writers of the Gospel This is a new series as we look at some of the writers of the Gospel messages.

JUDE WHO IS THE AUTHOR? The writer of this, the last of the General Epistles, calls himself “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.” The name “Jude” is another form of the name “Judas.” … WHO IS THE AUTHOR? The writer of this, the last of the General Epistles, calls himself “Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James.” The name “Jude” is another form of the name “Judas.” Which Jude (or Judas) is this? Two apostles were named Judas: Judas Iscariot and Judas the son of James. But the writer does not call himself an apostle and even distinguishes himself from the apostles (v.17). In the New Testament we hear of only one Judas who is a brother of a James. This is Judas, one of Jesus’ brothers (Mat. 13:55). This Judas, then, is the brother of the James who wrote the Epistle of James. Jude, Jesus’ brother and James the epistle writer’s brother, is therefore the probable author of this epistle. Like his brother James, Jude was not a believer in Jesus as the Christ during Jesus’ ministry (John 7:5). He was converted later, perhaps after Jesus’ resurrection. Paul may be referring to Jude in [1 Cor. 9:5]. From that passage we may guess that Jude, the Lord’s brother, was a traveling missionary who was accompanied by his wife on his travels. JUDE’S EPISTLE To whom was Jude writing? When? From where? These are questions that we do not have solid answers for. We have little to go on even to try to make guesses. Jude says only, in a general way, that he is writing “to those who have been called;” and in addressing his readers as “dear friends,” he shows that he knows them well. The similarity between Jude and 2 Peter may show that the two letters were written about the same time. We can, however, know something about the problem facing Jude’s readers. Certain false teachers had “slipped in among” the Christians addressed. These men are described as godless, denying Jesus Christ, living immoral, polluted lives, rejecting authority and slandering heavenly beings. It seems that these people used the teaching of forgiveness to mean that they could sin as much as they wanted now, since they were forgiven anyway. They thought of the gospel as a “license” to sin. Jude says that he had intended to write a different kind of letter to the Christians “about the salvation we share.” But when he heard of the work of these godless men he wrote instead to urge the Christians “to contend for the faith” (v. 3). Like John’s Second and Third Epistles, Jude’s Epistle has only one short chapter. It is short in length but very powerful in its message. Jude speaks powerfully against the false teachers and about their Judgment. “Woe to them!” he says, reminding us of some of the strong words of the Old Testament prophets. But Jude also speaks words of loving encouragement to his “dear friends.” He urges them: “Build yourselves up in your most holy faith … Keep yourselves in God’s love … Be merciful to those who doubt” (20-22). Efficiency or Effectiveness? Which would you rather be gifted with? It’s a tough balance in the workplace and in the home. Some people are super-efficient but lack in effectiveness. Others are very effective but fail at efficiency. What are you the strongest in? When it comes to parenting, we need a balance of both. Timelines, deadlines, agendas and scheduling call for parents to be efficient managers. A good, productive home will run smoothly and make deadlines when needed. The home should also be affective to the needs of all members. Efficiency can be sacrificed when special counsel, a loving hug, or urgent health matters arise. Where does the spiritual focus fit in? As we budget our time, we keep God’s Word first and foremost. It’s interesting that when we have this Gospel oriented perspective in our lives, it is the most effective thing we can do. You can have both! In Jesus and His Word!!

Being an Effective Parent-not a perfect one Take time to have fun with your children. Remember

God has given the children to you. He will help you with the challenge. Don’t try to be perfect. Pray

about your decisions and do the best you can. Set clear and consistent rules, but be flexible.
