11 The Winston School San Antonio

This was an unprecedented year for the Winston community due to COVID 19. The changes it brought in conducting the operations of the school and delivering instruction to our students were extremely challenging at times. However, even with these challenges, Winston continued to be a resilient community and there were moments to be thankful to you - our donors.

The annual fund drive generates donations from parents, students, friends, trustees, grandparents, foundations, relatives, and employees. These donations made a direct impact on the education of our students and the needs of the school.

Our new Fine Arts and Assembly Hall opened in August 2020 and all funds were raised to cover the expenses for this construction. The addition of this building has provided our students with new opportunities for learning especially in the area of industrial arts and the expansion of digital media, music, drama, and visual arts spaces. Students enjoy the spacious dining hall that also serves as a venue for drama productions with a black box theater and green room. The capital campaign funds raised provided the school the means to purchase new equipment to enhance the value of each new program.

This past year, funds were used to provide (1) the Faculty professional development courses to fine tune the quality of delivering virtual instruction, (2) PPE’s including hand sanitizing stations, and (3) the ever increasing need for technology with an emphasis on staying current.

Prior to COVID impacting the operation of the school; there were numerous in-kind contributions made and countless hours of volunteer service including chaperoning field trips and outdoor education were performed by our parent body. The Winston Parents’ Association has always been supportive of the needs of the school.

I appreciate and thank you for your decision to invest in the education of our current and future students by enriching their learning experience at Winston.

Sincerely,

Charles J. Karulak, Ed.D.Headmaster

We are so grateful for your financial support and deeply thank you for

your investment in the education of our students. Your gifts to Winston

are truly making a difference.

A Me s s a g e From ou r B o ard C h ai r

My mother sent me an email with a video of a small girl perhaps three years old in tears crying about "everything being shut down." In normal circumstances it would have been a "cute" video, but as I watched it I realized how disturbing it was that the child is scarred, perhaps for life, by the trauma of being locked down. We are fortunate to live in a community that is allowing in-person learning and personal movement as safely as possible. I so look forward to the world overcoming this virus and things moving smoothly forward again. It will happen, and I believe it has begun with the science and technology of vaccinations coming into play and better knowledge in treatment of the disease. I recently had a close friend, young and healthy, come very close to dying from Covid, This had a personal effect on me and I know many of you have your own experiences with the disease as well. Thanks to the hospital and the care administered, my friend was able to pull through after a few weeks being seriously ill; many others have not been so fortunate.

Needless to say, it has been a more than trying year since March of 2020, when Covid began affecting our school and life worldwide. Winston has done a superb job in dealing with Covid, thanks to Dr. Karulak and his knowledge and experience in working through trying situations. Dr. Karulak has also kept very close contact with medical doctors and the CDC and heeding the advice they offer. While Winston has had some cases of Covid, all in all, we have faired better than most schools. It does help having a smaller community and dedicated teachers to allow the hybrid learning process to be so successful. At the same time, our intimate community has allowed students to maintain the social connections they so need as they mature.

Winston enrollment has understandably decreased dramatically this year and we hope that next school year, normal life will resume and our enrollment numbers will rebound. Please, if you know anyone who could benefit from our wonderful personal learning environment and vision, tell them about Winston, and we would be happy to educate them in more detail about what we have to offer. We would love to have more students be able to be successful from experience gained here.

William Carrington2019-2020 Chairman of the Board

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your

generous support of The Winston School San Antonio.

Lenora was a devoted grandmother, beloved by her family. She supported the Winston School through the Annual

Fund as well as the Capital Campaign not just to support her own grandchildren but also to lift up other children

with learning differences. Lenora was always interested in the activities, programs, and success of the Winston School.

She enjoyed attending school events like Grandparents Day and the holiday recital when she could. Lenora Peace Brown was a kind, generous, humble, loving lady. She is

greatly missed. We know that she continues to take pride in the obstacles overcome and the accomplishments of all the

students of the Winston School.

Fostering Resilient Learners

Attendees had the opportunity to learn how to empower our youth to be the best amid a world of stress and trauma. Kristin Sours gave an unforgettable keynote lecture, explaining how to help children develop into resilient young adults.

The afternoon sessison offered the attendees an option between a 3-hour ethics panel or three breakout sessions. These sessions included discussions on ADHD, Anxiety, Sensory Integration, and Social-Emotional Learning just to name a few.

As an independent consultant and bestselling author of two books and several publications, Ms. Souers provides critical professional development, consultation, education, and training services to schools, school districts, and organizations throughout the country.

"We are lifelong learners, and the Symposium provides our community with the latest in

learning information and innovated ways to understand and enhance the needs of

our children."

Lauren Weinberg graduated from The Winston School San An-tonio in May of 2018. Three months later, she joined the Elon Uni-versity Class of 2022 where she will graduate with a double major (Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography and a Bachelors of Science in Dance Science), a minor in Exercise Science and will have completed the necessary prerequisites needed to attend physical therapy school in the future.

After graduation, Lauren is considering several different options which include going to physical therapy school, becoming pilates mat and equipment certified, becoming a dance teacher/choreographer, and dancing professionally.

Lauren has been very successful at Elon. She has been on the Dean’s list for 4 semesters, works closely with the disability services office to

mentor students who also experience learning differences. For two consecutive years, she has been the vice president of a Jewish

organization called Chabad on Campus, has joined Delta Chi Xi (a dance honorary fraternity), and has danced in almost every

performance that the Elon dance department has done since her freshman year.

According to OnStage rankings, Elon University is among the top 30 dance programs in the nation. This summer, Lauren was accepted to

an internship to study physical therapy in Israel, so she will be spending the summer in Tel Aviv, if Covid-19 permits.

Lauren Weinberg, Class of 2018

When Corey started college, he started working for 5150 Productions as a DJ and team build leader. Within two years, he was promoted to office manager and handled all the initial contacts and bookings for their clients. As a fun side job, he also became a licensed pyrotechnic operator. During the summers, he worked for Magic in the Sky who put on the nightly fireworks show at Six Flag Fiesta Texas. If you enjoyed the City of San Antonio’s New Years Eve fireworks at the start of 2019, he was part of that pyrotechnic team too.

After graduating from Winston, Corey Weinberg went to UTSA and studied Mechanical Engineering. While there, he was involved in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and was part of the team that attended the National SAE Formula One Competition in Lincoln, Nebraska. They were also the winners of UTSA’s 2018 Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash Trebuchet competition with a distance of 412 feet. His religion is very important to him and becameinvolved in Chabad on Campus, Hillel, and Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity which are all Jewish organizations. He was president of Chabad on Campus during his second year of college and became a founding member of Alpha Epsilon Pi during his freshman year. To this day, the fraternity is doing well and he keeps in touch with his fraternity brothers.

Corey's senior design team was fortunate to work with Caterpillar in Seguin, Texas on a project to help reduce the time and money required for painting their engines. They were able to reduce the cost and the time by over 50%. The summer before graduation, Corey was selected to be an intern with Caterpillar. He graduated from UTSA with his senior design team winning the award for the best overall senior design project. They were also the inaugural winners for a new award that was created that year - Excellence in Industry Partnership.

Before graduation, Corey accepted a position with PepsiCo. In January of 2020, he started with the

company and after 4 short months, he applied for a supervisor position. As of April of 2020, Corey is the Quality Control Supervisor overseeing 17

employees and making sure the quality of their products are up to the highest standards.
